What to know from Brian Gutekunst’s post-trade deadline press conference

Packers GM Brian Gutekunst answered questions following the NFL trade deadline on Tuesday.

Green Bay Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst answered questions for roughly 16 minutes following the NFL’s trade deadline on Tuesday.

The Packers made only one move: trading defensive end Preston Smith to the Pittsburgh Steelers for a seventh-round pick in the 2025 draft.

Here are the big things to know coming out of Gutekunst’s post-deadline press conference:

— Gutekunst thanked Preston Smith. “He’s done a lot of good things for us…wish him nothing but the best for him moving forward.”

— Said he’s “excited” to see more snaps from Arron Mosby and Brenton Cox Jr. He’s expecting the young players at edge rusher to improve over the second half of the season. “I’m excited to see what they do in the second half.”

— Said rookie running back MarShawn Lloyd (ankle) is coming off injured reserve soon and could take Smith’s roster spot. Packers have until next Saturday to fill the roster spot.

— Not surprised by the adjustment period for defensive front in new scheme and believes a “breakout” is coming.

— Packers assumed the trade deadline would be “quiet,” and it was. Didn’t think there would be many opportunities for acquiring “significant” players. “Wasn’t a ton available this year.”

— Said Packers didn’t set out to trade Preston Smith, but they wanted to give more opportunities to younger players. Similar to Rasul Douglas at cornerback last year.

— Said rookie Javon Bullard has done an “excellent job” playing safety and slot this year. “Really happy” with Keisean Nixon’s performance as an outside corner so far.

— On Edgerrin Cooper: Missed time in training camp, but he’s made “dynamic plays” as a rookie. Called him a “natural playmaker.”

— Said he’s not overly concerned on Jordan Love’s interceptions but admits he needs to get better protecting the ball in the second half of the season.

— On Brandon McManus: “Veteran guy, a pro. I don’t think he gets flustered at all…it was why we made the move.”

— On defensive front: “From that entire group, we need more from those guys, and I think we’ll get that…I like that group, I like the way they work.”

— On Packers so far: “We’re 6-3, I think we’re in a good spot and I’m excited to see how these guys come together and grow.” Said Packers need more consistency and better situational football. “We’re working towards that.”

NFL trade deadline: Recapping Jaguars’ in-season moves

NFL trade deadline: Recapping Jaguars’ in-season moves

The NFL trade deadline has come and gone, with a flurry of activity across the league before the clock struck 4 p.m. ET on Tuesday.

The Jaguars did not take part in Tuesday’s action, though. They got their moves out of the way in recent weeks.

Find a recap of Jacksonville’s 2024 in-season trades below.

OT Cam Robinson to the Minnesota Vikings

Jacksonville sent former starting left tackle Cam Robinson to Minnesota about a week before the trade deadline on Oct. 30. The Jaguars also sent the Vikings a conditional 2026 seventh-round NFL draft pick, which can be voided if Robinson does not meet undisclosed playing time requirements.

The Jaguars received a conditional 2026 fifth-round draft pick from the Vikings for Robinson. It can become a fourth-round pick based on Robinson’s playing time.

Robinson started 91 games for the Jaguars from his 2017 second-round selection by the club until one week before he was dealt to the Vikings. He was benched in favor of fourth-year Jacksonville offensive tackle Walker Little.

Robinson started at left tackle for Minnesota five days after his trade was made official, against the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday. He received a game ball from Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell for his performance.

DL Roy Robertson-Harris to the Seattle Seahawks

The Jaguars shipped defensive tackle Roy Robertson-Harris to the Seattle Seahawks on Oct. 14, amid their two-week trip to London for Weeks 6-7. Jacksonville got a 2026 sixth-round draft pick in return for Robertson-Harris.

It marked the NFL’s first trade during the 2024 regular season.

Robertson-Harris signed with Jacksonville as a free agent in 2021 and recorded 123 total tackles with 17 for loss, 11.5 sacks and seven pass breakups in 54 games, including 49 starts, with the Jaguars.

In three games with the Seahawks, Robertson-Harris has logged 10 total tackles with one for loss and one defended pass.

Bengals silent at NFL trade deadline despite rumored interest in help

The Bengals started hot, then fell quiet at the NFL trade deadline.

It turns out the Cincinnati Bengals trading for running back Khalil Herbert was not a sign of things to come for the team at the NFL trade deadline.

The Bengals sat still at the deadline despite obvious needs along the defensive line and at other positions.

It was a bit strange, considering The Athletic’s Dianna Russini reported roughly one hour before the deadline that the team was on the hunt for help on the interior of that defensive line.

Despite expiring contract names like Calais Campbell and Chase Young out there on middling teams, the Bengals didn’t get something done.

Barring an arrival via free agency or waiver wire, the Bengals will stick with the roster they have and hope to make a playoff push. That starts on Thursday night against the Baltimore Ravens.

Dolphins stand pat at 2024 NFL trade deadline

The Dolphins didn’t make any deadline trades and are sticking with the group they already have.

The Miami Dolphins neither traded any players away nor acquired any additional talent ahead of the 2024 NFL trade deadline.

Miami had until 4 p.m. ET on Tuesday to make any deals, as no more trades will be allowed to be finalized until the 2025 NFL league year begins in March.

At 2-6, the Dolphins were in an awkward middle ground between buyers and sellers. Despite the offense coming back to life with Tua Tagovailoa’s return, Miami is buried in the AFC standings.

Trading away future draft picks for an immediate boost could feel irresponsible given their slim shot at the postseason (NFL.com calculates a 4 percent chance). But the Dolphins aren’t ready to throw in the towel on their long shot odds either.

While the Dolphins reportedly made calls to acquire talent, no deal got done. If Miami is to turn its season around, it’ll have to do so with the group of players already on the roster.

Lions stand pat at NFL trade deadline after the Za’Darius Smith deal

Lions GM Brad Holmes was unable to pull off any other trades at the deadline after acquiring Za’Darius Smith

The NFL trade deadline hit at 4 p.m. ET on Tuesday with no fresh news involving the Detroit Lions. GM Brad Holmes and the Lions made their move hours earlier on Tuesday morning in acquiring EDGE Za’Darius Smith from the Cleveland Browns in exchange for two Day 3 draft picks.

Other teams made some moves around the league, but none of the big-name pass rushers like Myles Garrett or Maxx Crosby were traded. Nor was NFL sack leader Trey Hendrickson of the Bengals, a team that was a buyer at the trade deadline for just the second time since 1970.

None of the more realistic Lions targets wound up being dealt, either. Azeez Ojulari remains with the Giants, with New York apparently wanting too much in return for any other team to nibble. Chase Young and Carl Granderson are still New Orleans Saints, as unlikely as a Lions trade for either player might have been. Arden Key and Harold Landry stuck with the Titans, too.

Detroit lacked significant draft capital to make some minor moves, having already traded away next year’s third-round and fourth-round picks in trades made during the 2024 NFL Draft.

Nor did the Lions trade away any players, as expected. The injuries across the defensive line made any concept of dealing someone like James Houston or Isaiah Thomas prohibitive.

Browns part ways with a second defensive lineman at the NFL trade deadline

The Browns have parted ways with a second defensive lineman

It never clicked for the Cleveland Browns and their free agency addition, defensive tackle Quinton Jefferson.

NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reports the Browns are releasing Jefferson. On the day of the trade deadline, it’s clear that Cleveland could not find any takers and will release their veteran free-agent addition from the offseason. This is after trading Za’Darius Smith, another defensive lineman to the Detroit Lions.

Jefferson signed a one-year, $4 million contract with the Browns in free agency to help solidify interior defensive line depth alongside Dalvin Tomlinson and Shelby Harris. He appeared in five games for Cleveland this year but was a healthy scratch for his final four games with the team.

At 2-7, the Browns are using the final day before the trade deadline to move on from players who aren’t in their plans for 2025 and beyond. Moving on from Jefferson and edge rusher Za’Darius Smith opens up snaps to evaluate second-round defensive tackle Michael Hall Jr. and defensive end Isaiah McGuire.

Panthers’ updated 2025 draft picks after trade of Jonathan Mingo

The Panthers improved their 2025 draft capital by trading WR Jonathan Mingo to the Cowboys on Tuesday.

The Carolina Panthers conducted a bit of business before Tuesday’s trade deadline.

As first reported by NFL Network insiders Tom Pelissero and Ian Rapoport, and later confirmed by the team this afternoon, the Panthers shipped off second-year wideout Jonathan Mingo to the Dallas Cowboys. The deal will see Mingo, a 2023 second-round selection by Carolina, and a 2025 seventh-round pick head over to the NFC East for a 2025 fourth-round pick.

Mingo is now the second Panthers receiver to be traded over the last week, joining Diontae Johnson. Johnson, of course, was traded to the Baltimore Ravens last Tuesday in an exchange involving a late-round 2025 pick swap.

So, with all of this capital changing hands, let’s give you an updated look at what the Panthers are slated to have in their chest for the upcoming draft:

  • First round
  • Second round (via Los Angeles Rams)
  • Third round
  • Fourth round
  • Fourth round (via Dallas Cowboys)
  • Fifth round
  • Fifth round (via New York Giants)
  • Fifth round (via Baltimore Ravens)
  • Seventh round (Own or via Arizona Cardinals)

Recapping the moves Broncos made ahead of NFL trade deadline

The Broncos made one trade ahead of the NFL trade deadline.

Denver Broncos coach Sean Payton downplayed the NFL trade deadline in recent weeks and at least one report suggested the team would stand pat ahead of the deadline.

Perhaps that was a smokescreen.

The Broncos shipped outside linebacker Baron Browning to the Arizona Cardinals on Monday in exchange for a sixth-round draft pick. That ended up being the team’s only trade, but it wasn’t their only transaction.

Denver also gave a four-year, $60 million contract extension to fellow pass rusher Jonathon Cooper, locking him up through the 2028 season.

The Broncos could also get some reinforcements on the injury front this week. Denver wide receiver Josh Reynolds (finger) and center Luke Wattenberg (ankle) are both eligible to return from injured reserve and linebacker Drew Sanders is “close to returning” from an Achilles injury.

Broncos move before NFL trade deadline

  1. OLB Baron Browning traded to Cardinals
  2. OLB Jonathon Cooper signed to extension

With the deadline now passed, Denver’s full attention turns toward Sunday’s showdown with the Kansas City Chiefs on the road.

Ravens and Rams are already trading 2027 NFL Draft picks

The Ravens and Rams agreed to a deal at the 2024 NFL trade deadline that involves picks from the 2027 NFL Draft

We are barely six months past the 2024 NFL Draft, with the 2025 version in Green Bay not firing up until the end of next April. It’s pretty commonplace to find teams dealing picks for the 2025 draft around ahead of the NFL trade deadline on Tuesday.

There were some 2026 picks dealt as well, parts of packages made by GMs hoping to still be employed two offseasons from now to use them. But the Baltimore Ravens and Los Angeles Rams upped the ante even further.

The Ravens and Rams agreed to a deal involving Los Angeles cornerback Tre’Davious White in the hour before Tuesday’s deadline. White is heading to Baltimore, along with a seventh-round pick, for a seventh-round pick in return. Those seventh-rounders aren’t in 2025 or even 2026, however. They are from the 2027 NFL Draft.

These are the first 2027 draft selections to be traded, a full two-and-a-half years ahead of time!
