NFL Sunday Ticket officially going to YouTube TV in 2023

Vikings fans outside of Minnesota will need to have YouTube TV to catch the team every week

For the better part of the last two decades, DirecTV has been the exclusive provider of NFL Sunday Ticket. Last season, it was announced that they would no longer have the exclusive contract.

After a long negotiation with multiple companies, Google’s YouTube TV will be getting the exclusive contract for NFL Sunday Ticket starting in 2023.

The service will be available to both subscribers of YouTube TV and their subpackage YouTube Primetime Channels.

What is currently unclear is how this service will be made available to those who don’t have access to high-speed internet yet. Will they partner with any cable or satellite providers to cater to those individuals?

Either way, this is a huge step for the digital age and the distribution of the NFL.

NFL and Google partner to bring NFL Sunday Ticket to YouTube

The NFL today announced a multi-year deal with Google granting YouTube TV and YouTube Primetime Channels the right to exclusively distribute NFL Sunday Ticket starting with the 2023 NFL season.

According to Tom Pelissero YouTube has completed a deal for the NFL Sunday Ticket, the out-of-market package that DirecTV has exclusively broadcast since 1994 when it debuted.

Pro Football Talk is reporting that YouTube will pay $2.5 billion per year for the package.

“We’re excited to bring NFL Sunday Ticket to YouTube TV and YouTube Primetime Channels and usher in a new era of how fans across the United States watch and follow the NFL,” NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said. “For a number of years we have been focused on increased digital distribution of our games and this partnership is yet another example of us looking towards the future and building the next generation of NFL fans.”

“YouTube has long been a home for football fans, whether they’re streaming live games, keeping up with their home team, or watching the best plays in highlights,” said Susan Wojcicki, CEO of YouTube. “Through this expanded partnership with the NFL, viewers will now also be able to experience the game they love in compelling and innovative ways through YouTube TV or YouTube Prime.”

Talks with Google (the YouTube parent company) came full circle after Amazon and Apple dropped out.

With consumers cutting the cable cord, the NFL Sunday Ticket package will be available on YouTube TV and YouTube Premium channels.

The NFL Sunday Ticket could be moving to YouTube

The NFL Sunday Ticket could be moving to YouTube from DirecTV according to reports from The Athletic and the Wall Street Journal

The NFL’s longtime, exclusive partnership with its Sunday Ticket product and DirecTV could be moving to a new outlet. Daniel Kaplan of The Athletic confirmed another report from Joe Flint and Miles Kruppa of the Wall Street Journal that Google’s YouTube service is the new front-runner to land the NFL’s method for broadcasting out-of-market games.

The deal is not done, but both sources noted that another suitor for the Sunday Ticket package, Apple, dropped out of the running. No specific costs for the package for Google/YouTube or how much it would cost subscribers is known yet, but the price tag for the rights to Sunday Ticket is expected to cost over $2 billion per NFL season.

Fans have long complained about the monopoly DirecTV held. For Lions fans living outside the regular broadcast areas, they had to subscribe to all of DirecTV just to access Detroit games. YouTubeTV currently carries the NFL Network and is available to anyone with an internet connection.

As both reports note, there are still a lot of loose strings to get tied together before a deal is done. But for fans who have been forced to subscribe to DirecTV just to pay for NFL Sunday Ticket — and there are fans of all teams all over the country who fit that bill — the potential of a new plan should be a very welcome idea.

YouTube closing in on deal with NFL for ‘Sunday Ticket’

NFL Sunday Ticket seems headed to Google’s YouTube service

NFL Sunday Ticket is on the verge of having a new home, according to multiple reports.

The Wall Street Journal struck first in reporting Google’s YouTube TV and the NFL are close to a deal that could be announced as soon as Wednesday.

The Sunday Ticket package had been part of DirecTV since its inception in 1994. DirecTV has paid the NFL $1.5 billion per year.

Viewers pay around $300 a season for “Sunday Ticket,” which averages 2 million subscribers. As of August, DirecTV had a total of 13.9 million subscribers.

Terms being discussed for the agreement couldn’t immediately be learned. … Sunday Ticket allows subscribers to view all out-of-market Sunday afternoon games, meaning games that don’t involve their local teams.

… Under the scenario being discussed, NFL games would be available to be streamed on two subscription services, YouTube TV and YouTube Primetime Channels, next season.

… YouTube TV, a $64.99-a-month online bundle of cable channels, crossed more than 5 million subscriptions and trial accounts in June, according to the company. Primetime Channels, which launched in November, allows viewers to individually subscribe to more than 30 streaming services.

The NFL and YouTube already have a relationship. The league’s channel on YouTube has more than 10 million subscribers and all NFL teams also have their own channels on the platform.

DirecTV’s NFL Sunday Ticket was down again in Week 2 and football fans were justifiably livid

An absolute embarrassment.

What used to be a yearly issue for DirecTV is now becoming a weekly problem with the NFL Sunday Ticket app down. AGAIN.

Ahead of Week 1’s NFL games, fans logged into their Sunday Ticket app to find that games either weren’t loading or were incorrectly given “blacked out” error messages. DirecTV, of course, had all offseason to get the app running and functional, so failing to do so for Week 1 was an inexcusable letdown. But hey, there was another week to get it fixed.

Well, the service evidently had not been repaired for Week 2.

Fans took to social media during Week 2’s early slate to complain that the DirecTV Sunday Ticket app was failing to load any game. Eventually, the spinning wheel would settle on a “resource unavailable” message. It looked something like this:

You had ONE job, DirecTV.

As many know, this is expected to be DirecTV’s final season as the exclusive home for NFL Sunday Ticket with Apple and Amazon seen as favorites to land the rights. This final, lame-duck season as a rights holder hasn’t given DirecTV much incentive to put out a reliable app, and NFL fans are paying the price.

They were understandably furious about DirecTV’s embarrassing failure for a second straight week.

Fans were furious that DirecTV’s NFL Sunday Ticket was down at the start of Week 1

You had one job!

For nearly 30 years, NFL fans have needed to turn to DirecTV to watch out-of-market games given the satellite provider’s exclusive deal with the league. And with all that experience hosting NFL Sunday Ticket, you’d think DirecTV would be able to handle the task of … well … showing games at the start of the season.

Think again. It’s an issue seemingly every year.

In what is expected to be DirecTV’s final year as the exclusive home of Sunday Ticket, fans were having trouble accessing the early Week 1 games with the app either showing log-in errors or blacking out every viewing option.

DirecTV, of course, had an entire offseason to make its tech functional, but the company knows that the package is leaving at the end of the season. And NFL fans are already feeling the impact of that neglect.

Amazon and Apple are seen as the early frontrunners to land Sunday Ticket next season, but as long as fans are stuck with DirecTV, they don’t seem happy with the unreliable service.
