Vikings projected to have 9th hardest schedule in 2023

Heading into Thursday’s schedule release, the Minnesota Vikings are projected to have the 9th easiest schedule in the NFL in 2023.

Heading into the 2023 season, the Minnesota Vikings will have the 9th hardest schedule in the NFL according to Sharp Football Analysis. Their opponents have a combined record of 143-145-0, with a winning percentage of 0.497.

When we compare the schedules of the Vikings with those of the other NFC North teams, we find that the Vikings face the toughest schedule. That comes with winning the division the year prior. The Chicago Bears have the easiest schedule and are ranked 5th in the NFL. The Detroit Lions come next, with the 8th easiest schedule. The Green Bay Packers have the 12th easiest schedule in the NFL.

Here’s a list of the teams that the Vikings will face in 2023, along with their records from 2022:

  • Atlanta Falcons (7-10)
  • Carolina Panthers (7-10)
  • Chicago Bears (3-14)
  • Cincinnati Bengals (12-4)
  • Denver Broncos (5-12)
  • Detroit Lions (9-8)
  • Green Bay Packers (8-9)
  • Kansas City Chiefs (14-3)
  • Las Vegas Raiders (6-11)
  • Los Angeles Chargers (10-7)
  • New Orleans Saints (7-10)
  • Philadelphia Eagles (14-3)
  • San Francisco 49ers (13-4)
  • Tampa Bay Buccaneers (8-9)

Although the strength of the schedule is an interesting topic, it does not clearly indicate the difficulty of the other team. Teams have undergone changes since the previous season, and although the core might remain the same, the rosters are different. Regardless, the Vikings will have their work cut out for them as they try to build off a remarkable 2022 season.

Bears will travel the third-fewest miles of any NFL team in 2023

The Bears play nine road games this season, but won’t have to travel far compared to the rest of the league.

The Chicago Bears will soon learn when they will play their opponents during the 2023 season, but we already know the amount of travel required throughout the year. Now that the international games have been unveiled with the Bears not being included in the slate, we know just how far they will be traveling this year to play all their games. Turns out, it’s pretty favorable compared to the rest of the league.

According to Bill Speros of Bookies.com, the Bears will travel 12,253 air miles to play all 17 games. That’s third-fewest in the league, trailing only the Green Bay Packers (11,956) and the Cincinnati Bengals (11,942). The Seattle Seahawks lead the league, needing to travel 31,600 miles. Speros calculated the data using air miles between each stadium.

The low total isn’t a shock for the Bears. Seeing as they’re in the middle of the country and in a division where the other three teams are only a few hundred miles from them, it makes sense they wouldn’t need to travel far for many of their games. The Bears will have a couple longer trips when they head west to face the Los Angeles Chargers and south to take on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and New Orleans Saints. Otherwise, their road schedule is favorable from a distance standpoint.

Will the minimal travel help when it comes to wins and losses? It can’t hurt but it wasn’t exactly a factor last season. The Bears had a similar mileage total in 2022 according to Speros, traveling 10,086 air miles. That was once again near the bottom of the league but they finished the season with a 3-14 record, worst in the NFL.

Still, you want the team to be rested and refreshed when traveling for road games. Having shorter flights helps with that. It’s a small win for the Bears ahead of their full schedule release, which takes place Thursday evening at 7 p.m. CT.

There are new changes to the NFL Schedule in 2023

ESPN’s Adam Schefter said he NFL schedule will undergo some changes this season including teams maybe playing two Thursday Night games

On Monday afternoon, the NFL announced that it will release the schedule for the 2023 season on Thursday May 11th at 8pm EST. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the NFL schedule will undergo some changes this season.

Schefter revealed via Twitter on Monday evening the following changes:

  • The NFL will have a game on Black Friday
  • Games will no longer belong exclusively to networks
  • Teams can play on Thursday Night Football more than once
  • Not every team will play in a primetime game.

The changes to the NFL schedule are significant. With the addition of a Black Friday game, the NFL will have two days over a holiday weekend for increased viewership, similar to Christmas Eve and Christmas.

The next change is that games will no longer be exclusively owned by networks, which will allow fans to watch the best possible games. Previously, networks could protect games, restricting them from being moved and leading to boring games. This change will help prevent such situations.

In addition, not all teams will play in a primetime game, indicating that the NFL is focused on maximizing viewership by avoiding bad or small-market teams playing in primetime.

The final change is that teams can play more than one Thursday Night Football game. This may not be received well by NFL players, given the already tight turnaround from Sunday to Thursday. The NFL could mitigate this by ensuring teams only play Thursday Night games following a bye week or back-to-back Thursday Night games. While the other changes make sense, this one has the potential to backfire.

It will be intriguing to see how these changes unfold, but it appears that the NFL’s objective is to maximize viewership with these modifications.

Official: NFL to release 2023 schedule on Thursday, May 11

NFL officially announced on Monday afternoon that they would release the schedule for the upcoming season on Thursday, May 11th

On Monday afternoon, the NFL announced that they would release the schedule for the upcoming season on Thursday, May 11th at 8 pm EST. This announcement followed a report from Peter King of NBC Sports on Monday morning, suggesting that the schedule release might be delayed.

We already know which teams the Minnesota Vikings will play, but we will now learn when they will face them. The Vikings are scheduled to compete against the AFC West and NFC South, including home games against the Kansas City Chiefs, Los Angeles Chargers, New Orleans Saints, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

As the Vikings finished first in the NFC North last season, they will also face the team that finished in the same place in the NFC East (Philadelphia Eagles), NFC West (San Francisco 49ers), and AFC North (Cincinnati Bengals).

Kevin O’Connell and the Vikings will seek to build on their incredible 2022 season, and discovering when they will play their opponents is the first step.

Report: NFL schedule release may be delayed

According to NBC Sports’ Peter King, the NFL’s schedule release may not be ready by Thursday, May 11th, and could be delayed.

After the conclusion of the NFL draft, the next event on the league’s calendar is the schedule release. Scheduled for Thursday evening May 11th at 8 pm Eastern on NFL Network, that may have to be pushed back

According to NBC Sports’ Peter King, there is a chance that the schedule may not be ready for release on Thursday.

It’s still likely to be done in time for release Thursday at 8 p.m., but I was told over the weekend it may not be finished in time. The 2023 mega-games—opening Thursday, Sunday and Monday nights, Thanksgiving Day, the new Black Friday tilt, the Sunday night game on Christmas Eve and the Monday tripleheader on Christmas—are not set in stone yet. The mega-games are usually solid by early May. The schedule crew is slated to meet with commissioner Roger Goodell this afternoon in New York, at which time more clarity on the tentpole games is expected. I’m told as of the weekend the NFL was still in search of options on the 272-game regular season slate, with a series of computers continuing to spit out alternatives.

The key here is that the premiere games aren’t set in stone yet. Both Fox and CBS have the ability to protect games and figuring out the schedule around that can be a challenge.

Hopefully, King is right that the schedule release will still go as planned.
