K Chris Boswell on track to break the single-season field goal record

Chris Boswell is on pace to break the NFL single-season field goal record, fueling the Steelers’ strong start to their 2024 campaign.

The ‘Wizard of Boz’ is truly onto something special in this spectacular start to the 8-2 Pittsburgh Steelers’ 2024 season. K Chris Boswell has all but locked up a potential third-straight AFC Special Teams Player of the Month award for November, and he is currently on pace to shatter one particular NFL record.

The single-season field goal record is held by David Akers, who made 44 field goals during the 2011 season. Akers had previously broken the 2005 record of 40 set by Neil Rackers, but Boswell is on pace to leave Akers’ record in the dust.

Through ten games played, Boswell has attempted 30 field goals and made 29 of them. He is averaging three attempts per game and is currently on pace to hit 49 field goals in the 2024 17-game season after his six field goals made in Week 11.

If Boswell achieves this historic feat, should the kicker at least be considered in the 2024 MVP race? After all, Boswell is perhaps the most responsible for the Steelers’ fantastic start to this season.

Christian McCaffrey ties an NFL record with big day vs. Cardinals

Christian McCaffrey’s scoring binge on Sunday tied an NFL record, and put him on the verge of breaking a Jerry Rice franchise record.

49ers running back Christian McCaffrey had a huge Week 15 in Arizona. McCaffrey led the club with 115 rushing yards, while also notching a team-high five receptions for a team-high 72 receiving yards. He also tallied three total TDs, including two in the air and one on the ground.

His multifaceted scoring attack helped him climb to the top of the NFL history books. Sunday marked McCaffrey’s 15th career game with at least one rushing and one receiving touchdown. That ties him with former Colts and Rams running back Marshall Faulk for the most such games all time.

Of those 15 games, four have come this year and another two came last season after he joined the 49ers. That means six of his 15 have come in the 25 games he’s played in San Francisco. There’s a very real chance McCaffrey breaks that record this season.

McCaffrey on Sunday also notched his 18th, 19th and 20th touchdowns of the season. He’s only the second player in 49ers franchise history to eclipse the 20 TD mark. Hall of Fame wide receiver Jerry Rice set the franchise record with 23 total TDs in the 1987 season (in only 12 games!!!).

There’s a very real chance McCaffrey breaks both Faulk’s NFL record and Rice’s 49ers franchise record this season.

Josh Dobbs’ touchdown run vs. Broncos makes NFL history

On Sunday night, Vikings QB Josh Dobbs did something no other QB in the history of the NFL had pulled off

The Josh Dobbs story continues to be incredible. Dobbs has come in for the Minnesota Vikings under extraordinary circumstances, and has made the most of the opportunity — and then some. That magic has extended into tonight’s game against the Denver Broncos.

With his rushing score, Dobbs became the first quarterback in NFL history to have a rushing and passing touchdown in each of his first three games with a team.

Early in the second quarter, Dobbs put the Vikings on the board with an incredible touchdown. Dobbs escaped the pocket toward the sideline, then ducked under what looked like a sure sack to find tight end Josh Oliver in the end zone.

In the third quarter, Dobbs put the Vikings on the board again, this time with his legs. Dobbs surveyed the field, calmly decided nothing was open, and took off toward the end zone for a 10-yard score. With that score, Dobbs did something no quarterback has ever done and headed into the NFL record books.

It’s been a storybook start to Dobbs’ career with the Vikings, but there’s still work to be done tonight if he’s going to lead Minnesota to their sixth straight win.

Chargers QB Justin Herbert sets another milestone

Justin Herbert broke Hall of Fame quarterback Peyton Manning’s record.

Stop me if you’ve heard this before: Justin Herbert broke another NFL record.

In the Chargers’ game against the Lions, Herbert set the record for most passing yards by a player through his first four seasons, passing Hall of Fame quarterback Peyton Manning. He now sits at 16,438 yards.

Despite the loss, Herbert was phenomenal and it was arguably the best performance this season and was one of his better showings of his professional career.

Herbert completed 27 of 40 passes for 323 yards and four touchdowns. It was the fourth time he had a game with four touchdown passes.

The offensive line played a big role in ensuring that Herbert was kept clean, but even when he was pressured, he did a great job of diagnosing it, maneuvering the pocket and getting out on the run when needed.

Herbert threw a handful of eyebrow-raising throws, something that fans are used to but hadn’t seen much of in recent weeks.

Joe Burrow set to become NFL’s all-time completion percentage leader on Monday night

Burrow will pass Drew Brees if he attempts 12 passes against the Bills on Monday night — whether they’re complete or not.

[autotag]Joe Burrow[/autotag] may be in just his third season in the league, but the former LSU quarterback is already making his mark.

After ending the Cincinnati Bengals‘ league-high playoff victory drought last fall, leading the team to a Super Bowl appearance, Burrow is set to add an individual accomplishment to his repertoire, as well.

With just 12 completions in Monday night’s Week 17 contest against the Buffalo Bills, Burrow would become the NFL’s all-time leader in completion percentage. Burrow is currently at 69.0% on his career, ahead of Drew Brees at 67.7%, but he needs 1,500 attempts to qualify for the list.

Even if Burrow threw 12 incompletions on Monday night, he would still become the record holder — at least, for the time being. Burrow led the NFL in completion percentage in 2021 (70.4%), and he already has the highest completion percentage of any player after their first two seasons with a minimum of 500 attempts.

The former Heisman-winner and No. 1 overall pick has been playing out of his mind down the stretch, and he’ll look to take Cincinnati on another deep playoff run. If he’s going to play this efficiently in the postseason, it certainly isn’t out of the question.

Top-10 RB Alvin Kamara closing in on Saints’ all-time touchdowns record

Alvin Kamara voted #5 running back by players, coaches, and execs, but will soon be #1 on Saints’ all-time touchdown list, via @RossJacksonNOLA:

Marques Colston played his last NFL game in 2015, ending an iconic 10-year run with the New Orleans Saints. Since then, he has reigned as the Saints’ touchdown leader (and the best NFL player to never make a Pro Bowl) with 72 career touchdown receptions. Now, after only five seasons, former Offensive Rookie of the Year Alvin Kamara is only 5 all-purpose touchdowns away from taking the crown as the all-time touchdown leader in New Orleans.

With 68 touchdowns scored as a runner, receiver, and even as a kick returner, Kamara is averaging nearly a touchdown every game of his career with only 73 regular season games played. That is exactly half as many games as Colston played throughout his career (146). Kamara is very good at football.

His talent is not limited to local recognition and franchise records, though. Players, coaches, and executives across the NFL were polled by ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler to create top-10 lists for different position groups, and Kamara clocked in at No. 5 among the running backs. The praise for Kamara unsurprisingly centers around his versatility, uncanny balance ability and the general difficulty that comes with game-planning against him. Here’s what Fowler heard about Kamara from around the league:

“You can put a really good safety on him, and he’ll still come back to the sideline and say, ‘Uh, we’ve got a problem,'” a veteran AFC coach said.

“Two-phase, three-down back. Contact balance is rare. What he does in the passing game separates him,” an NFC exec said. But after four straight seasons of 80 or more catches, Kamara slipped to 47 catches last year.

“He’s a nightmare for us,” a high-ranking NFL personnel evaluator said. “Not having Brees getting him the ball in the short area like he used to, behind a great offensive line all those years, has affected him a bit. And he’ll probably lose a step eventually. But there are a lot of top backs we’d rather face than him.”

Questions about Kamara’s availability will be plentiful this offseason. He awaits a court hearing in August connected an offseason arrest following an alleged altercation while at the Pro Bowl. He is, without a doubt, one of the most valuable players on the roster in New Orleans. They stand to potentially compete without him for at least six games. But if that is the case he’ll have his impact in both the run and passing game. Fielding a top-5 NFL running back for 11 games will still benefit the Saints as they look to get back to the playoffs in 2022.

Top 10 seasons by a rookie TE: Pitts closing in on Ditka’s record

Pitts got within striking distance of the record, but he still needs over 100 yards with two games left to overtake Iron Mike.

On Sunday, Kyle Pitts passed Jeremy Shockey for the most receiving yards by a rookie tight end in the NFL’s modern era. While this is quite the accomplishment, there’s still one man that Pitts must pass to be the undisputed rookie TE champ.

Before he was the Super Bowl-champion head coach of the Chicago Bears, Mike Ditka set what’s been an unbreakable rookie record of 1,076 receiving yards for the Bears in 1961.

Pitts got within striking distance of the record, but he still needs over 100 yards with two games left to overtake Iron Mike. Here are the top 10 seasons by a rookie tight end.

Cooper Kupp made history again by topping 900 yards and 10 TDs in first 8 games

Cooper Kupp continues to set records with his red-hot start to the season, already totaling 900 yards and 10 touchdowns in 8 games.

Cooper Kupp was always a good receiver for the Rams, putting up solid numbers when healthy during his first four seasons. But this year, he’s taken his game to another level with Matthew Stafford as his quarterback.

Kupp entered Week 8 leading the NFL in targets, receptions, receiving yards and touchdowns, putting himself into the conversation as the best wide receiver in football. All he did on Sunday against the Texans was improve on those numbers, catching another seven passes for 115 yards and a touchdown.

He now has 63 catches for 924 yards and 10 touchdowns, continuing to make NFL history. According to NFL Research on Twitter, Kupp is the first player in the Super Bowl era (since 1970) with at least 900 yards and 10 touchdown catches in his first eight games.

The only other players in NFL history with at least 900 yards and 10 touchdown catches through the first eight games were Elroy Hirsch (1951), Bobby Mitchell (1962) and Billy Howton (1956), according to Stathead.

Kupp is now on pace for 1,964 yards this season, which would tie Calvin Johnson’s single-season record. It’ll be a tough pace to keep up, but Kupp is more than capable of doing it.

Watch: Matt Ryan becomes 7th QB to complete 5,000 passes

Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan surpassed 5,000 career completions in Sunday’s win over the Jets, the seventh QB in NFL history to do so.

Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan hit yet another milestone on Sunday, completing pass No. 5,000 for his career to move into seventh place in NFL history. This wasn’t been some meaningless stat, either. Ryan played a phenomenal game, throwing for 342 yards, two touchdowns and a passer rating of 109.7 in a 27-20 win over the New York Jets.

Watch Ryan’s latest historical completion from Atlanta’s Week 5 victory in London below, courtesy of the team’s Twitter account.

Ravens reach several milestones in landslide Week 17 win

There were 14 team and individual landmarks within reach for the Baltimore Ravens coming into Week 17. How many were they able to achieve?

The Baltimore Ravens booked their ticket to the postseason on Sunday with a thumping victory over the Cincinnati Bengals. The win gives the Ravens an 11-5 record and was enough for a third consecutive year in the postseason.

While all the attention was rightfully focused on Baltimore getting the win and securing the continuation of their season, there were other storylines at play as well. As we wrote prior to the game, there were 14 team, player, and coach records/milestones within shooting distance.

Here is a look at which of those records the Ravens managed to achieve this season.
