WATCH: Lil’Jordan Humphrey hauls in a touchdown for the Patriots

Lil’Jordan Humphrey is finding his groove with his new team.

New England Patriots wide receiver Lil’Jordan Humphrey is finding his groove with his new team.

Humphrey was one of the best players on the field in the Patriots’ preseason opener against the New York Giants on Thursday.

He snagged six passes for 62 yards and a touchdown to give the Pats a late fourth-quarter lead. A great showing for Humphrey, who is looking to secure a spot on the New England roster.

Fellow former Longhorn wide receiver Collin Johnson also stood out in the game. Johnson finished with seven catches for 82 yards as the Giants took down the Patriots 23-21 on a last-second field goal.

Humphrey and Johnson were a dynamic duo for the Longhorns in 2018. The two combined for over 2,000 yards and 18 touchdowns helping lead Texas to its best season since 2010.

C Justin Britt explains why the Texans struggled with the Cowboys’ blitz

Houston Texans center Justin Britt provided clarity as to why the Dallas Cowboys’ blitz had great success against them in the second preseason game.

The Houston Texans had trouble against the Dallas Cowboys’ blitz in their second preseason game.

Texans quarterbacks were only sacked once, but they faced pressure all night.

According to center Justin Britt, the reason why they weren’t able to handle the Cowboys’ blitz isn’t an issue that will persist into the regular season.

“It’s hard in the preseason,” Britt said. “We’re trying to get better as a team, and we’re practicing against ourselves and trying to learn our own schemes. Then we go to a game that we didn’t really get the game plan for to the extent we want. So, they threw out a blitz we haven’t seen all camp and we didn’t really talk about, and it was a new look for me and [quarterback] Tyrod (Taylor), and we’re grateful it happened because we’ve learned from it. It’s only going to continue to help us grow and move forward. They didn’t do anything crazy, but what they did, they did well.”

Britt played 13 snaps in the game at center before his evening was done to give Justin McCray, Ryan McCollum, and Drake Jackson a shot at the position.

“It’s my first year in this offense with this blocking scheme and how they do things, so it’s just one of those reps in games that you just get to kind of learn from,” said Britt. “It’s not that they did anything too exotic, but they did enough to make us have to take a step back and re-evaluate the best way to do it, which is going to help us in the future.”

The Texans will get another chance to work together as a cohesive blocking unit against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Saturday night at NRG Stadium for the preseason finale.

Texans DE Charles Omenihu was a ‘secret superstar’ in the second week of preseason

Houston Texans defensive end Charles Omenihu has earned recognition for his two sacks and a fumble recovery against the Dallas Cowboys in preseason.

Houston Texans defensive end Charles Omenihu has been flying under the radar at a national level since he came into the league as a fifth-round pick from Texas in 2019. However, the spotlight may be starting to turn his way in 2021.

According to Doug Farrar of the Touchdown Wire, Omenihu earned a spot on their “secret superstars” list for the second week of preseason.

A fifth-round pick in 2019 out of Texas, Omenihu has enjoyed two nice NFL seasons as a rotational inside/outside pass disruptor. He’s flown under the radar in the Texans’ franchise disarray, but at the very least, he should get more recognition on a Houston roster that’s full of twos and threes, with very few ones.

Omenihu was certainly on point last week against the Cowboys, with two sacks and three stops. The same guy who had 32 total pressures on 340 pass-rushing snaps in 2020 could be even better in 2021.

Defensive tackle Maliek Collins knows how well Omenihu can play, and outlined it for reporters on Monday after practice at NRG Stadium.

“He’s strong, he can bend,” Collins said. “Yeah, man, he’s a great player. You’ve seen it on Saturday whenever we played, a glimpse of what he can be. He’s going to continue to work and develop to be that.”

The Texans take on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Saturday at 7:00 p.m. Central Time in NRG Stadium. Omenihu could be a secret superstar by the end of that week with another big performance.

Stock up, stock down following the Jags’ preseason loss to the Saints

The Jags’ second preseason game against the Saints wasn’t pretty at all, but nonetheless we were able to put together a stock report after the 23-21 loss.

The Jacksonville Jaguars have wrapped up stop No. 2 of their preseason tour after sustaining another loss, but this time it was to the New Orleans Saints in the form of a 23-21 final score.

It was a game where the starters on offense and defense didn’t exactly come out how fans wanted, leaving several concerns as the preseason heads into its final week. As always, though, there also were a few good things to take away from the process, too.

Here’s a stock report of both members on the team who are ascending and some who are descending as the Jags have passed the mid-way point of their 2021 preseason:

Why did the Texans run game seem to do worse against the Cowboys?

Houston Texans coach David Culley explained why the run game appeared to do worse against the Dallas Cowboys in the second preseason game.

The Houston Texans’ run game appeared to be the driving force for the offense in the 26-7 win over the Green Bay Packers on Aug. 14 in the first preseason game.

The Texans generated 170 yards and two touchdowns on 37 carries. Against the Dallas Cowboys amid a 20-14 win on Aug. 21, Houston could only muster 89 yards and a touchdown on 29 carries. The Texans were even worse on third down, going 0-10 in the process.

Coach David Culley told reporters before Monday’s practice at Houston Methodist Training Center that part of the reason why the rushing attack appeared to regress was due to what they wanted to see.

“I think that was more so of how we went into the approach of the game, to do some things differently on offense that we had not done before,” Culley said. “I don’t think it had anything to do with the fact that it was who we were playing. It just had something to do with the things that we were calling and what we were trying to see.

“We were trying to get the ball in certain people’s hands. We wanted to see certain guys in certain situation. [Offensive coordinator] Tim (Kelly) called the game to kind of evaluate some of our personnel.”

Mark Ingram was a notable running back who did have a good outing with seven carries for 24 yards and a touchdown. On the Texans’ opening drive, which began with a sack-fumble that was recovered at the Dallas 23-yard line, Ingram converted a fourth-and-1 and later scored a 2-yard touchdown.

Texans to cut former 2019 third-round TE Kahale Warring

The Houston Texans have decided to move on from former 2019 third-round tight end Kahale Warring.

The Houston Texans are moving on from another one of the draft picks from the Bill O’Brien era.

According to Aaron Wilson of Sports Talk 790, the Texans will be cutting former 2019 third-round tight end Kahale Warring.

Warring played four snaps against the Dallas Cowboys in the Texans’ 20-14 win — a game where the Texans sought to get all of their rostered tight ends involved from Jordan Akins, Pharaoh Brown, Ryan Izzo, Antony Auclair, Paul Quessenberry, and fifth-round rookie Brevin Jordan.

Coach David Culley said after the game on Saturday night they would have to “look at the video” to properly comment on how the tight ends played.

“Individually, it’s hard for me to say,” Culley said. “I’ll have to look at the video but I thought they did a nice job. There weren’t any errors or anything that really kept us from being able to do what we needed to do. We just have to look at the video.”

The Texans evidently did, and they determined it would be best to move on from Warring, who has caught three passes for 35 yards on seven targets through seven career games.

Texans coach David Culley says rookie WR Nico Collins could have played against the Cowboys

Houston Texans coach David Culley says that rookie wideout Nico Collins could have played against the Dallas Cowboys if it was necessary.

HOUSTON — When the Houston Texans took on the Dallas Cowboys during their second preseason game on Saturday, they did so without rookie wideout Nico Collins. Collins made the trip to AT&T Stadium and joined his teammates on the sideline, but did not dress — according to Texans beat reporter Aaron Wilson of Sports Talk 790.

Following the Texans’ 20-14 victory over the Cowboys, first-year head coach David Culley announced that Collins had been dealing with a minor muscle pull and that the 22-year-old receiver from Michigan “will be fine.”

“[It’s] something that we just felt like that we really didn’t need to play him tonight for that reason,” Culley said during his postgame press conference. “We knew that if we gave him some rest that he’ll be ready to go. He actually could have played tonight if we wanted him to play tonight. Our staff felt like it was best to not play him where we can get that thing taken care of and move forward.”

Collins has yet to miss a day of practice since the Texans opened training camp in late July. He made his unofficial NFL debut during Houston’s preseason win against the Green Bay Packers, where he recorded one reception for 24 yards in the win.

Collins’ absence, along with Anthony Miller who sustained a slight shoulder separation in Green Bay, presented an opportunity for Jordan Veasy to showcase his potential as a quality wide receiver for the Texans. He recorded 30 yards on two catches. Veasy’s longest was an 18-yard reception from rookie quarterback Davis Mills.

Texans coach David Culley makes good on vow to go for it on fourth down in preseason

Houston Texans coach David Culley vowed after the first preseason game to go for it. He made good on the promise against the Dallas Cowboys.

The Houston Texans had two instances where they were on the plus-side of the 50-yard line against the Green Bay Packers and elected to kick on fourth down.

Coach David Culley said after that Aug. 14 game the Texans would go for them throughout the rest of the preseason.

Against the Dallas Cowboys on Saturday, Culley made good on at least one of them. Facing a fourth-and-1 from the Dallas 14 with 12:49 to go in the first quarter, running back Mark Ingram took the ball for a two-yard gain up the middle. The drive concluded with Ingram rushing for a two-yard touchdown to give Houston an early 7-0 lead.

“You have to be able to win the line of scrimmage and have the mentality that you’re not going to be denied the yard,” Ingram said. “There’s a lot of will to break a tackle and get some yards. There’s a lot of will for the line to be able to knock the D-line off the ball. Everyone has to be able to execute, and everyone has to have the mentality to be physical and not to be denied a yard so you can continue the drive.”

Ingram, who was with Culley for the past two seasons with the Baltimore Ravens, appreciated the mentality the coach displayed with the fourth-down decision.

“I love the aggressive mentality,” said Ingram, who finished with seven carries for 24 yards and a touchdown. “I love the identity. We have a physical identity. An identity we have faith in. We believe in each other that we’re going to get a yard. When Coach makes the call, us as players, we have to be able to go out there execute and make sure we don’t let him down, that we convert the fourth-and-one and sustain the drive.

“I love the aggressiveness. I love the mentality. I think everyone on the offense loves the challenge as well. We have to keep improving and get better.”

Late in the fourth quarter, Culley decided to send Ka’imi Fairbairn out for field goals of 38 and 24 yards.

3 takeaways from Texans’ 20-14 preseason victory over the Cowboys

The Houston Texans came away with the 20-14 preseason win over the Dallas Cowboys. Here are three takeaways from the win.

The Houston Texans won their second straight preseason game Saturday night in a 20-14 victory against the Dallas Cowboys. The Texans flaunted their enhanced defense at AT&T Stadium, as they recorded four takeaways and five sacks in Dallas.

Charles Omenihu recorded two of the Texans’ five sacks, which awarded the University of Texas prodigy his first game ball a day after his 24th birthday.

“You get four turnovers and you don’t turn it over, there’s a pretty good chance you’re going to win the football game,” first-year coach David Culley said. “That’s what they’ve been preaching all training camp. They’re doing a good job with it back there in the secondary. And again, a lot of that has to do with what’s happening upfront. The pressure that the upfront people put on and it all works together.”

As the Texans improve to 2-0 in the preseason, here are three observations from Houston’s I-45 showdown against the Cowboys.
