Titans trainer tests positive for COVID-19 ahead of playoff game vs. Ravens

The Titans had a trainer test positive for COVID-19, potentially starting an outbreak ahead of the wild-card playoff game against the Ravens

A Tennessee Titans trainer has tested positive for COVID-19, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. The team is currently doing contact tracing, which has the potential to see players and coaches miss Sunday’s playoff game against the Baltimore Ravens if labeled as a “close contact” or if they too test positive in the coming days.

The Ravens have already been on both sides of this coin this season. Every team in the league has had to deal with the coronavirus in one way or another and Baltimore got hit hard with an outbreak of their own following playing Tennessee in Week 11. The Ravens’ coronavirus outbreak eventually saw 23 players head to the Reserve/COVID-19 list, out of the 30 players they’ve placed on the list this season in total.

The Titans aren’t the only team dealing with COVID-19 right now. The Cleveland Browns, who are in the playoffs for the first time since 2002, have been dealing with an outbreak of their own that saw a bunch of players miss Week 17’s tilt against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Unfortunately, Cleveland is still dealing with the outbreak as head coach Kevin Stefanski, two other staff members, and two players tested positive for COVID-19 on Tuesday.

This will be one to follow closely this week as contact tracing is done and as others potentially test positive. The NFL hasn’t been eager to reschedule games, forcing teams to play with limited rosters and coaching staffs.

Two former Badgers signed to reserve/future contracts by their NFL teams

Former Wisconsin Badgers Chris Orr and Beau Benzschawel were signed to reserve/future contracts by the Houston Texans and Carolina Panthers

Now that the NFL regular season has come to an end and 18 teams have played their final game, we are beginning to see former Wisconsin Badgers put pen to paper and sign contracts for next season.

Two of those names, with more to come as more teams are eliminated from the playoffs, are offensive lineman Beau Benzschawel and inside linebacker Chris Orr—players who signed reserve/future contracts this week with the Houston Texans and Carolina Panthers respectively.

Related: Full-season statistics for every former Wisconsin Badger in the NFL

The contracts ensure the two players will be part of their team’s offseason rosters and enter training camp with a shot at making the active roster.

Orr and Benzschawel combined to play in four games this season, each spending most of the year on the practice squad.

Their NFL journeys aren’t complete yet, and we’ll monitor their chances to make an active roster next season as the 2021 NFL season begins to approach.

NFL playoff winners: home vs. visitor from 2010 to 2019

For the last 10 years, there are patterns for whether a playoff game was won by the home (H) or the visiting (V) teams:

For the last 10 years, there are patterns for whether a playoff game was won by the home (H) or the visiting (V) teams:

Wildcard Rounds

There is no real pattern here. Over the last ten years, there were only two years with all the home teams. This is the round that witnesses the most road wins by far. Over 40 games in the last ten years, 20 went to home teams and 20 were away teams. Wildcard round is 50% for visitors to win. With the extra wildcard, it might favor home teams more (division winners) but the NFC East isn’t going to hurt the trend about road teams.

2020 is different with one additional wild card team per conference. That would suggest that it would slant slightly more towards home teams since a new “No. 7” team is in the mix, but we’ll see if it makes any difference.

Divisional Rounds

The divisional round almost rarely contains more than one road winner. Seven of the last eight years saw at least three home teams win and twice it was all home teams. The most common is one road winner. Over the last ten years, the 40 games have seen 31 home winners and 9 road winners. So road winners are only 23%.

Championship Rounds

This is why home field is so important.  The trend is strongly both home teams win and this is why that homefield advantage and No. 1 seed is so important. Six of the last seven years saw both home teams win, broken up only by the shocker of 2018 when both road teams won in overtime, including the contested win by the Rams over the Saints. When it comes to betting, home team is not a lock, but it is as close as any other round in the playoffs.

On this date: Lions pummel Cowboys for the team’s only playoff win in the Super Bowl era

Where were you on that glorious date?

Where were you on January 5, 1992? If you were old enough to be a Lions fan, chances are it was one of the happiest dates of your football life.

On that date, 29 years ago today, the Lions scored the only playoff win in the Super Bowl era in franchise history. Detroit pummeled the visiting Dallas Cowboys, 38-6, in the old Pontiac Silverdome to win the NFC divisional-round matchup.

Wayne Fontes’ Lions never looked better than that day, waxing the floor with Troy Aikman, Emmitt Smith and all the luminaries of Jimmy Johnson’s vaunted Cowboys. Willie Green caught two TD passes from Erik Kramer, while Mel Jenkins scored a too-easy pick-six off Aikman, who would get yanked in the game for Steve Beuerlein.

Barry Sanders ran for 69 yards and a touchdown. Herman Moore also caught a touchdown pass as the Lions offense racked up 421 total yards of offense.

It was a magical day. I watched the game at a sports bar in Sandusky, Ohio with a raucous group of Lions fans, some of whom never sat down. There was cheering, there was hugging, there was something special about being a Lions fan that day.

Here’s to the memory of the greatest moment in Lions franchise history in the last 60 years!

Ravens open wild-card playoffs as early favorites over Titans

Despite losing to the Tennessee Titans earlier in the season, the Baltimore Ravens are odds favorites in the wild-card playoffs.

The Baltimore Ravens are set to take on the Tennessee Titans in the wild-card round of the NFL playoffs. There will undoubtedly be tons of talk about how quarterback Lamar Jackson hasn’t won a playoff game yet and how Tennessee ousted Baltimore in the divisional round last year. But at least one oddsmaker believes it’s the Ravens’ time.

According to BetMGM, the Ravens are currently four-point favorites over the Titans for the playoffs. That’s fairly monumental considering the game is being held in Tennessee and home teams are given a three-point bump on the spread to account for it. Still, it’s the smallest spread of any wild-card game this weekend, pointing to it being a tight contest that will likely come down to the final minutes.

The Ravens and Titans met once already this season, with Tennessee needing overtime to defeat an injury-depleted Baltimore squad, 30-24, in Week 11. But with the Ravens healthier while the Titans have some injury concerns, and Baltimore set to have both Calais Campbell and Brandon Williams on the defensive line in this tilt, it makes sense the Ravens are being given the odds edge this week.

Baltimore has seemingly found a rhythm on offense over the last five weeks, averaging 267 rushing yards per game while quarterback Lamar Jackson has dialed in the deep passing attack and become more efficient throwing the ball underneath. Over that five-game stretch, the Ravens scored a total of 186 points (37.2 points per game average). The defense has been a little concerning, giving up big plays on the ground and through the air to what should have been inferior competition. But as they get healthier, there’s hope the defense will return to early-season form.

John Harbaugh: ‘Good chance’ Yannick Ngakoue and Jimmy Smith return for playoffs

With the Baltimore Ravens battling injuries in recent weeks, there’s hope they’ll return defensive stars Yannick Ngakoue, Jimmy Smith

https://embed.sendtonews.com/oembed/?SC=Au3bVSK3CU-1093888-7498&format=json&offsetx=0&offsety=0&floatwidth=400&floatposition=bottom-right&float=on

The Baltimore Ravens have looked fine-tuned for a playoff run over the last five weeks. The offense has been steadily improving to the point they rushed for over 400 yards on the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 17, while the defense played significantly better football with cornerback Marcus Peters back in the lineup. As they turn their attention forward to the wild-card matchup against the Tennessee Titans, the Ravens might just be getting even healthier.

Health has been a major concern for Baltimore all season long as the team has seemingly added more names to the injury report over the last five weeks than it’s taken off. Granted, it wasn’t asking for a lot, but against Cincinnati, the Ravens appear to have come out unscathed.

“I think we got through this pretty well, I haven’t been informed of anything serious,” coach John Harbaugh told reporters after Sunday’s game.

Harbaugh also seemed optimistic about the potential return of impact players like defensive end Yannick Ngakoue and cornerback Jimmy Smith, who missed Week 17.

“I do think there’s a good chance we’ll get those guys [Ngakoue and Smith] back,” Harbaugh continued. “I can’t say for certain but I do think there’s a good chance for those guys to play.”

The Ravens have been missing starters on both sides of the ball in recent weeks and it’s definitely been felt on defense. Peters, Ngakoue, Smith, Calais Campbell, Anthony Averett, and Derek Wolfe have all missed at least one game over the last five weeks. With only Smith and Ngakoue missing this last regular-season game, there’s reasonable hope Baltimore can get all of their major defensive players back in time for this playoff matchup.

The return of Peters was a breath of fresh air on Sunday, seeing Baltimore’s defense play significantly better than it had the previous four weeks en route to shutting down the Bengals’ passing attack to just 48 net yards. If the jump in play noticed when guys like Peters and Campbell have returned to the lineup is any indication, the Ravens’ defense should be in rare form next week.

They’ll need to be in order to pick up their first playoff win of the Lamar Jackson era and get another step closer to the ultimate goal of winning Super Bowl LV.
