Prescott, Lamb, McCarthy among Cowboys primed for strong 2020, say oddsmakers

An online sportsbook has released odds for end-of-season awards, naming several Cowboys as having favorable odds in their categories.

Football fans looking to put their money where their mouths are should probably start with the biggest gamble of them all right now: namely, whether there will even be a 2020 NFL season. Assuming the league moves forward and finds a way to play some semblance of a season, though, there will be plenty to wager on for those so inclined.

Even for those who don’t have monetary skin in the game, though, looking at the official odds has always been a way to gauge who’s favored to do what come gameday. And Cowboys fans itching for a sneak peek at how some of their guys will do in 2020 may find a good deal of encouragement in the latest set of numbers.

The sportsbook BetOnline has released odds on the league’s end-of-year awards, and the Cowboys are well-represented, an indicator that those in the know are projecting potentially strong campaigns from several Dallas notables.

In the regular season MVP race, quarterback Dak Prescott currently has the third-best odds to bring home the hardware. Only Patrick Mahomes and Lamar Jackson are more likely to be named the league’s Most Valuable Player, according to the site. Prescott is tied with Kyler Murray, Russell Wilson, and Tom Brady. Argue over the exact figures there, but that’s fine company for the Dallas passer to find himself in, and could point to the likelihood of a stellar season.

Carolina’s Christian McCaffrey is the first non-quarterback on the list, at 14th. Cowboys star Ezekiel Elliott is the fourth non-passer ranked, with the 26th-best odds overall. Among running backs, Elliott is behind McCaffrey, Derrick Henry (21), and Saquon Barkley (25).

DeMarcus Lawrence finds himself 13th on the list of candidates to win Defensive Player of the Year, with the same odds as Minnesota’s Danielle Hunter. Other Cowboys defenders listed with odds to win the award are Jaylon Smith (32), Aldon Smith (35), Leighton Vander Esch (37), and Gerald McCoy (67).

For those curious, recently-departed Byron Jones sits 27th. Current wish-list players Jadeveon Clowney and Jamal Adams are 14th and 19th, respectively.

Defensive Rookie of the Year? There are fifteen names ahead of Trevon Diggs. But, speaking to the promise of the Cowboys’ defensive rookie class of 2020 as a whole, Bradlee Anae and Neville Gallimore are also given DRoY odds; they rank 37th and 45th.

CeeDee Lamb holds the No. 7 spot among Offensive Rookie of the Year candidates and is the highest-ranking wide receiver on the list. He beats out Henry Ruggs III and Jerry Jeudy, both of whom were drafted ahead of Lamb in April.

Comeback Player of the Year is always a fascinating one. In 2019, Titans quarterback Ryan Tannehill was named the award’s recipient, despite the astonishing return of Cowboys center Travis Frederick, who had spent the previous year battling a rare neurological disorder that left him barely able to walk. For the 2020 season, new Cowboys defensive end Aldon Smith is listed 10th by the oddsmakers, behind names like Ben Roethlisberger, Rob Gronkowski, Cam Newton, Nick Foles, and JJ Watt. Interestingly, the new backup passer in Dallas, Andy Dalton, is ranked 13th.

Mike McCarthy is given the second-best odds of winning 2020’s Coach of the Year award, behind Bill Belichick and Bruce Arians, currently tied with the best chances. If he does go on to win the honor, McCarthy would be the second Cowboys coach to earn the title in the past five years; Jason Garrett won Coach of the Year in 2016.

Kyler Murray named 2019 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year

Former Oklahoma quarterback Kyler Murray was named the 2019 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year on Saturday.

Former Oklahoma quarterback Kyler Murray was named the 2019 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year on Saturday.

The former No. 1 overall pick out of the 2019 draft is the first Heisman trophy winner to earn the honor since Cam Newton in 2011. He joined Newton as the only rookie quarterbacks with more than 3,500 passing yards and 500 rushing yards in their first season.

Murray threw for 3,722 yards on 64% completion while leading the Cardinals to a 5-10-1 record under first-year head coach Kliff Kingsbury. He threw for 20 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. He led all rookie quarterbacks in passing yards and completions. He finished with the third most completions ever by a rookie with 349. Only Carson Wentz (379) and Sam Bradford (354) had more.

Known for his dual-threat style, Murray also finished the year with 544 rushing yards and four rushing touchdowns.

Murray’s offensive line struggled mightily this season, as the former Sooner was was sacked 48 times this season, tied for the most in the NFL with Falcon’s QB Matt Ryan.

Cardinals QB Kyler Murray named 2019 NFL Offensive Rookie of Year over Myles Sanders

Kyler Murray named 2019 NFL Offensive Rookie of Year over Myles Sanders

The 2019 NFL rookie class was full of breakout stars, but none more dynamic or transforming than Kyler Murray.

Kyler Murray turned the Arizona Cardinals into an offensive juggernaut and on Saturday night, he was named the 2019 AP NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year during Saturday’s NFL Honors in Miami.

The No. 1 overall became the first former Heisman trophy winner selected first overall to win Offensive Rookie of the Year honors since Cam Newton in 2011. Murray also joined Newton as the only QBs with 3,500-plus pass yards and 500-plus rush yards in their rookie seasons in NFL history.

Sanders carved out a significant role in the Eagles backfield and should provide Carson Wentz with security in the backfield for years to come.

The second-round pick out of Penn State emerged late in the season finished first among rookies in scrimmage yards (1,327) and all-purpose yards (1,641).

Eagles’ RB Miles Sanders continues to make his case for the NFL’s Offensive Rookie of the Year award

Miles Sanders deserves to be named NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year

The jokes write themselves.

Those were some of the comments used when it was suggested back in November, that Eagles rookie running back Miles Sanders was slowly making his case to be named the NFL’s Offensive Rookie of the Year.

Names like Gardner Minshew, Kyler Murray, and Josh Jacobs were thrown around, but when Sanders was mentioned, there was laughter and obnoxious responses. After helping carry the Eagles offense over the last month and a half, who’s laughing now?

At the end of November, Sanders led ALL NFL rookies with 709 all-purpose yards and became the first NFL running back since Adrian Peterson, to amass 500+ scrimmage yards and 250+ return yards in his first 8 career games.

When November ended, Sanders was the only NFL rookie this season, to amass 200+ rush yards and 200+ rec. yards as well.

If you check vegas odds currently for the award, names like Murray, Jacobs, AJ Brown of Tennesse, Terry McLaurin of Washington and Seattle’s DK Metcalf are mentioned in front of Sanders even now, and yet, the Eagles rookie may be the only player mentioned to make a playoff appearance.

Jacobs has more rushing yards than Sanders, as the Oakland Raiders rookie has amassed 1,150 yards rushing while averaging nearly five yards per carry. Outside of those stats, Jacobs has been injured and his Raiders are unlikely to make the playoffs.

McLaurin has been a goldmine for the Redskins coming out of Ohio State, and probably would be favored for the award if his team was performing better. The former Buckeye star is closing in on 1,000 receiving yards and has a bright future ahead of him.

That leaves Sanders, who has been the Eagles’ biggest and most explosive offensive weapon all season long.

In the win over Dallas, Sanders had 156 total yards and a touchdown, while making big play after big play.

Sanders is now just the 5th rookie since 2000 with 500+ rush yards and 500+ receiving yards in a season, joining Reggie Bush, Giovani Bernard, Alvin Kamara, and Saquon Barkley on that list.

Sanders is only the 8th rookie RB in league history with 750 rushing yards and 500 receiving yards in a season. He joins Hall of Famers Gale Sayers, Marshall Faulk, and Charley Taylor in that category, along with Abner Haynes, Saquon Barkley, Edgerrin James, and Billy Sims.

He may not have more rushing yards than Josh Jacobs but in terms of all-purpose yards, Sanders is among the top-10, as a rookie.

NFL All-Purpose Yards Leaders

1. Christian McCaffrey (2,294)
2. Nick Chubb (1,730)
3. Michael Thomas (1,679)
4. Leonard Fournette (1,674)
5. Dalvin Cook (1,654)
6. Ezekiel Elliott (1,653)
7. Miles Sanders (1,590)

Over his last four games, with the Eagles season on the line, Sanders has 79 carries for 329 rushing yards (4.6 YPC) and 20 receptions for 173 yards and 6 total touchdowns.

Sanders leads all NFL rookies in all-purpose yards, he’s now set the franchise rookie record for scrimmage yards.

On Sunday against Dallas, Sanders became the first Eagles rookie with 75 yards rushing and 75 receiving in a game since Billy Ray Barnes did it in 1957 per Rueben Frank.

Sanders just broke LeSean McCoy’s team rookie rushing record and in Week 15, he became 1st Eagles rookie with 170+ scrimmage yards, one touchdown receiving and one touchdown rushing in the same game.

The race shouldn’t even be close, but those numbers above and the dynamic ability Sanders is set to display in the season finale and the playoffs, suggest another award should be on its way to Philly.
