2020 Mock Draft: Brandon Jones lands in Dallas

In the lastest mock draft by Chad Reuter on NFL.com, Brandon Jones was selected to join the Dallas Cowboys. Dallas is in need at safety.

There is no question that the Dallas Cowboys are in need of safety help in the upcoming NFL Draft. In his latest mock draft for NFL.com, Chad Reuter mocked Texas Longhorns’ safety Brandon Jones to the Cowboys with the 82nd pick in the 2020 NFL Draft.

For Dallas they need a safety to put next to Xavier Woods, especially given the lack of depth at the position with the upcoming NFL Free Agency looming. Last year the Cowboys used Jeff Heath in that role but Jones provides an immediate upgrade at the position.

Brandon Jones is obviously a student of the game and according to Bleacher Report’s Matt Miller, he spent the down time studying up on NFL team’s defensive playbooks. That is the kind of drive that will do wonders for Jones at the next level. For the Cowboys to land him at pick 82, will help in the secondary at a position that the team hasn’t invested highly in over the last decade plus.

Recently Trevor Sikkema of the Draft Network joined the Locked on Longhorns podcast and spoke about what Brandon Jones does so well.

2020 NFL Mock Draft Roundup: S Brandon Jones is Texas’ top pick

Former Texas safety Brandon Jones is widely projected to be selected at the beginning of the fourth round of the 2020 NFL Draft.

As the 2020 NFL Draft inches closer, mock drafts start to appear a bit more realistic.

Safety Brandon Jones remains the highest-ranked prospect from Texas in terms of where he’s projected to be selected. Although much of the hype surrounds receivers Devin Duvernay and Collin Johnson, Jones is still widely expected to be the first Longhorn off the board.

If it weren’t for a loaded wide receiver class this year, Johnson and Duvernay would likely surpass Jones. On CBS Sports draft prospect rankings, Duvernay is listed as the No. 79 overall player, while Jones sits at No. 120 overall. Johnson rounds out the trio at No. 127.

Draft Wire recently released their latest four-round projections, Jones was the only Texas player included. He was mocked to the Carolina Panthers with the No. 103 overall selection. He’s a very physical, relentless player with exceptional tackling abilities that could potentially start at strong safety at the next level.

Our colleagues at the Draft Wire also ranked Jones as the No. 6 safety available ahead of April’s draft. The fourth-year defensive back appeared in 42 career games for Texas, making 31 starts.

As a senior, Jones started eight games for the Longhorns, where he led the team with 55 tackles. The 6-0, 205-pound do-it-all safety finished his Texas career with 202 total tackles.

Although Jones missed the Senior Bowl due to injury, he could sneak into the third round with impressive performances at the NFL Combine and Pro Day. In the meantime, he’s been absorbing whatever information he can off the field.

According to Bleacher Report’s NFL Draft Analyst Matt Miller, Jones made the most of his time recovering from shoulder surgery by studying every NFL teams defensive plays from 2019.

Current Texas quarterback Sam Ehlinger also expressed his respect towards Jones, stating how he’s incredibly dedicated to his craft.

Jones has made an exceptional impact with the Longhorns both on and off the field, his unmatched work ethic will be intriguing to organizations throughout the interview process at the NFL Combine.

I asked the writers here at Ravens Wire to all run a simulation of the first round of the 2020 NFL draft. While we got a few different answers, it was clear everyone was on board with grabbing impact defensive players in the first round.

Take a look at who everyone took with the No. 28 pick in the 2020 NFL draft and why.

Matthew Stevens: LB Kenneth Murray, Oklahoma

First and foremost, I’m not turning down an Oklahoma guy that fits a need given Baltimore’s new predilection towards those players under general manager Eric DeCosta. While a pass rusher is the biggest need by far, I believe Murray can be a three-down inside linebacker and the replacement for C.J. Mosley.

After getting gashed on the ground by the Tennessee Titans in the playoffs, it was clear how much Baltimore missed having a sure-thing at linebacker. After limping through the season with Patrick Onwuasor, Chris Board and Josh Bynes; and with serious question marks at the position entering this offseason, it was a no brainer to fill the spot with an immediate starter in Murray.
