Jaguars to face Bears, Patriots in 2024 London games

Jaguars to face Bears, Patriots in 2024 London games

Jacksonville will face Chicago at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Oct. 13 and New England at Wembley Stadium on Oct. 20 — both located in London, England — for the Jaguars’ 2024 international games, the NFL announced early Wednesday morning.

Both contests are scheduled for 9:30 a.m. ET and will air on NFL Network.

The Jaguars will carry an away team designation when facing the Bears and host the Patriots as the home team at Wembley, where they’ve played one game per season since 2013, except from 2020-21.

Jacksonville will face two opponents abroad for the second consecutive season after doing so for the first time in 2023, against Atlanta and Buffalo.

While the Jaguars have their franchise quarterback in place in Trevor Lawrence, who owns a 3-1 record in London and is in negotiations with the team about a long-term contract, the Bears and Patriots each selected signal-callers at the top of the 2024 NFL draft who will make their international debuts against Jacksonville.

Chicago took Southern Cal quarterback Caleb Williams at No. 1 overall; New England picked North Carolina passer Drake Maye at No. 3.

The announcement came just over 12 hours before the league is scheduled to reveal full schedules for the 2024 season, at 8 p.m. on Wednesday.

This is a breaking news story that will be updated.

All designated teams for NFL international games in 2024

The NFL has announced all 5 designated teams for international games in 2024

For the fifth year in a row, the Raiders won’t be traveling abroad to play a game. This year the NFL will be playing five games internationally this season, including their first ever game in South America.

All the the “home” teams have been announced, none of whom are teams the Raiders face in a road game. Those designated teams are as follows:

Chicago Bears in London (Tottenham Hotspur Stadium)
Minnesota Vikings in London (Tottenham Hotspur Stadium)
Jacksonville Jaguars in London (Wembley Stadium)
Carolina Panthers in Munich (Allianz Arena)
Philadelphia Eagles in San Paulo Brazil

After a stretch in which the Raiders played internationally five times in their final six seasons in Oakland from 2014-19 — three times in London, two times in Mexico –, the NFL has given them a reprieve since they landed in Las Vegas.

This season the Raiders have nine road games, which means if they were to play overseas, it would have been a road game.

Likewise, as they will have nine home games next year, should they play overseas in 2025, it would be as one of the home teams.

Broncos won’t play an international game in 2024

The Broncos won’t have an international game in 2024. Denver will host eight games and the Broncos will play nine road games stateside.

We already know the Denver Broncos’ upcoming opponents, and we’ll find out the team’s full 2024 schedule with dates and times in May.

We also know that the Broncos will not play abroad this fall.

The NFL has announced the “home” teams for the five international games in 2024 and none of them are set to host Denver next season.

The Philadelphia Eagles (Brazil), Chicago Bears (England), Minnesota Vikings (England), Jacksonville Jaguars (England) and Carolina Panthers (Germany) will “host” games outside the United States this fall.

The Broncos do have the Panthers on their list of 2024 opponents, but that game will be played at Empower Field at Mile High in Denver. So the Broncos won’t have an international game during the 2024 season.

Denver last played abroad in 2022 when they defeated the Jaguars 21-17 at Wembley Stadium in London. Each NFL team is required to play at least one international game every eight years. Beginning in 2025, up to eight international games will be scheduled each season. That would involve 16 teams, giving half the league an international game each year.

So the Broncos will likely have another international game in the not-too-distant future, and Mexico is the most likely location. The NFL won’t play in Mexico in 2024 due to construction at Estadio Azteca. Once those renovations are complete, Denver will be a strong candidate to play in Mexico. This year, though, all of the team’s games will be played in the USA.

Raiders will not play in Europe in 2024, but Brazil still possible

Raiders will not play in Europe in 2024, but Brazil still a possibility

Thursday the NFL announced their designated home teams for their three games in London and their game in Munich Germany. Those teams are as follows:

Chicago Bears in London (Tottenham Hotspur Stadium)
Minnesota Vikings in London (Tottenham Hotspur Stadium)
Jacksonville Jaguars in London (Wembley Stadium)
Carolina Panthers in Munich (Allianz Arena)

If the Raiders were going to play overseas this year, it would be an away game as they have nine of them. And the Raiders don’t play any of these four teams on the road, which means they will not be headed to London or Germany next season.

There is, however, still one international game yet to be announced. That’s the first ever NFL game played in South America.

The NFL will be headed to San Paulo Brazil in 2024 and until they announce either the designated teams, much of the NFL could be a potential opponent.

This goes especially for the Raiders as 2024 will mark five years since the Raiders last played an international game. That game was the first ever played at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium back in 2019.

Should the Raiders not be one of the teams to play in Brazil this season, the odds of them hosting an international game in 2025 would increase considerably due to the fact that the NFL will up the number of teams hosting international games to eight in 2025.

Ravens must attack Rams pass defense in Week 14

The Ravens will need Zay Flowers and Odell Beckham Jr. to play well Sunday.

Will the Baltimore Ravens opt for the pass attack versus the Los Angeles Rams in week 14?

The Ravens rank No. 1 in rush yards per game but may have their rushing attack nullified if the Rams turn this game into an offensive shootout. Rainy weather may have its impact on this game as well.

When Ravens offensive coordinator Todd Monken opts for the pass this weekend, he will want to use misdirection and play-action to move the Rams’ defense up front. Monken must neutralize defensive tackle Aaron Donald and allow time for quarterback Lamar Jackson to get some quick throws off. Ravens’ wide receivers Zay Flowers and Odell Beckham Jr. must win outside to give Jackson quick reads.

With the Rams sitting at 6-6, they would love to upset the Ravens at M&T Bank Stadium in pursuit of an NFC wild card. Monken must be prepared to counter Rams head coach Sean McVay with his own dynamic passing attack.

The Ravens need to stay ahead of the chains, away from third-and-long, and avoid the Rams pass rush to win in week 14.

How a trip to London got the Jaguars’ season back on track

The Jaguars went from 1-2 to 3-2 in their time in London, giving their season new life heading into Week 6.

Just a couple weeks ago, the Jacksonville Jaguars were 1-2 and sitting at the bottom of the AFC South. Now, the Jaguars are 3-2 and atop the division most NFL fans expected them to win before the season.

While the schedule may show one home game and one away game, the two-game stretch served as back-to-back unofficial home games for Jacksonville. In Week 4 and Week 5, the Jaguars played the Atlanta Falcons and the Buffalo Bills, respectively, in London.

An extended stay at their home away from home may have been needed to get the Jaguars’ season back on track.

“It was good to get out of Jacksonville at that time,” Jaguars head coach Doug Pederson said. “We needed to bond a little bit as a football team, and we’ve done that. And now we get to go back with two wins, and we’ve got a big AFC South matchup next week.”

Jacksonville started the season with a win against the Indianapolis Colts. However, the team suffered losses in its first two home games when it faced the Kansas City Chiefs and the Houston Texans, who blew the team out.

The Jaguars’ game against the Falcons looked like a potential bounce-back game, and bounce back they did. They cruised to a 23-7 victory, and Pederson saw a difference in how the team played, even if it hadn’t totally forgotten the previous losses.

“It’s hard to say if you’re over it, but I think they were much more relaxed, and really the energy today was much better than last week,” Pederson said following Jacksonville’s Week 4 win. “It’s about how we respond, and the guys responded extremely well today.”

The Jaguars then stayed in London, while not in the same hotel, and faced a challenge following their victory over the Falcons. They ran into a 3-1 Bills team that had won three straight, with all those victories coming by at least 28 points.

Jacksonville produced its most well-rounded game of the season and defeated the rolling Bills, 25-20.

“It started last week against the Falcons, and we found a way to win that one, then against a really good hot Bills team today and found a way again.” Pederson said after the Jaguars beat the Bills. “Great team effort, but definitely feels good. Still a lot of football ahead of us, but we accomplished our immediate goal, and that was to win two games over here.”

While Pederson said the team’s goal is to win one game at a time, two straight games could give Jacksonville more momentum than it has had all season. The time in London also gave the Jaguars players and staff time to grow closer early in the season.

“The fact that we got to spend time in the hotel together, players went to dinner together, they just hung around and played some golf together,” Pederson said. “When you’re in the heat of the battle out there and of course in the game, you lean on each other that way, and we were able to do that for those 10 days. I think the guys really embraced that, and now it’s a matter of coming back here, continuing that same sort of mindset as we prepare for this week and for the first half of our season.”

Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence didn’t think much changed after going from 1-2 to 3-2, but he thought the wins helped the team work out some kinks.

“The difference is we’re making the plays when we have to make them in crunch time, and I think the other two games that we’ve lost, we didn’t do that when the moment was there,” Lawrence said. “If we clean up even more of the mistakes and the execution and sloppiness, it’ll be even cleaner.”

Lawrence enjoyed playing in London, but he said he looks forward to returning to Jacksonville. The Jaguars are now preparing for a home tilt against Indianapolis, the team they beat in Week 1.

“We got two wins, and that was the goal was to get two wins and go home,” Lawrence said. “I know we’re excited to go home. It’s a long time away from your life, but we’re excited to get back.”

While not much has changed for the Colts, starting quarterback Anthony Richardson will be out, and former Jaguars quarterback Gardner Minshew II will be in.

While the Jags beat the Colts in their season-opening matchup, going into their game against Indianapolis as the division-leader should give them more confidence. Now, Jacksonville not only leads the division, but they took down one of the best teams in the league.

The Jaguars can’t play down to their opponent because Indianapolis has played well to start the season. The Colts have beaten the Houston Texans, Baltimore Ravens, and Tennessee Titans, and they fell in overtime to the Los Angeles Rams.

The Colts’ starter is Richardson when he’s healthy, but Minshew has seen plenty of action in 2023 due to Richardson’s early-season health issues. Even though Richardson is a more dynamic playmaker, Minshew has proven he can be extremely efficient and show up in big games, and his first chance to beat his former team certainly qualifies.

Regardless, the Jaguars have won back-to-back games and have a chance to use their London trip as a confidence boost against a division opponent.

“It’s big for our organization,” Pederson said after beating the Bills. “We came over here 1-2, and we’re going back 3-2… and just proud of our entire organization and our team for how we handled it.”

Ravens are spending the entire week in London ahead of Week 6 matchup vs. Titans

The Baltimore Ravens flew to London on Monday for a week long stay ahead of Week 6 matchup against the Tennessee Titans

The Ravens have played in one overseas contest, and the results were less than favorable, so they’re changing things up.

In the Ravens’ only international game in franchise history, Baltimore was blown out by the Jaguars 44-7 after allowing the team two days to acclimate.

The 37-point loss is the second-largest margin of defeat in an NFL international game, and six years later, the organization will uproot for an entire week, spending six days overseas ahead of the Sunday morning broadcast, according to Clifton Brown of the team’s official website.

“It’s mostly driven by the fact we didn’t do well,” Harbaugh said. “We did the opposite. There’s no data. We looked for it – when you should go out there, what’s the science on that. As often is the case, they really don’t know.”

The team will spend Monday resting, with an off day to recalibrate on Tuesday, and then practice for three days ahead of their matchup with the Titans.

5 Jaguars players to watch vs. the Falcons in Week 4

Here are five Jaguars players to watch as they attempt to end their two-game skid Week 4 against the Falcons:

After losing their Week 2 matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs, the Jacksonville Jaguars dropped a second-straight game, this time to the Houston Texans. The Jaguars now sit at 1-2 three games into a season where experts had them projected as a top AFC team.

Their chance to bounce back comes in their home away from home, London. On Sunday, Jacksonville will play the Atlanta Falcons, who have a 2-1 record to start their season.

Last season, the Falcons would have been a penciled-in victory for the Jaguars. However, this year, their revamped defense and growing offense give the Jaguars more of a challenge in the first London game of the year.

Here are five Jaguars players to watch in their across-the-pond tilt against the Falcons in Week 4:

NFL announces 5-game international schedule

Prior to the Raiders relocating to Las Vegas they had played an international game five times in six years. That was twice in Mexico City and thrice in London. The last being in 2019 when they faced the Bears in the first ever NFL game at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

With each year that passes, it seems like it could be time again for the NFL to ask them to head across the pond to play a game. At least with another team hosting.

This year two of the Raiders away teams are playing overseas, so there seemed to be a chance they would return, or perhaps be one of the first teams to play in Germany. But no. The NFL released their international schedule today and the Raiders were not among the teams.

Here is the schedule:

NFL releases London matchups and Raiders not among them

It’s official: No international games for Raiders this season

The NFL likes to release their schedule in bits and pieces these days, just to keep fans interested. Back in late February, they revealed which teams would be the home teams for their five international games — three in London, one in Mexico, and one in Germany.

With that reveal, we knew the Raiders would not be playing in Mexico or Germany because they didn’t have a road game against the Cardinals or Buccaneers. But London was still a possibility.

In fact, there are two of the Raiders’ road opponents who play host in London — the Saints at Tottenham Hotspur and the Jaguars at Wembley.

Well, today the NFL announced who the Saints and Jaguars would be facing in those games, and it isn’t the Raiders.

The Saints will face off against the Vikings, while the Jaguars will face the Broncos.

And therefore, the Raiders officially have no international games this season.

Prior to the team’s move from Oakland to Las Vegas, they had five international games in a six-year span — three in London and two in Mexico City. In every case, they were the “home” team.

While being in a new stadium, and having sent so many home games out of the country in recent years, may preclude them from hosting an international game anytime soon, it doesn’t take them off the table to be the visiting team.

And we are entering the third straight season without the Raiders playing an international game, so at some point, they will be due again.
