Broncos’ order of picks for 2024 NFL draft

We’ll know the exact pick placements after the NFL announces comp picks, but we do know the Broncos hold six picks to use in the NFL draft.

Bring on the 2024 NFL offseason!

Up first for the Denver Broncos is NFL free agency in March (and the team has several notable in-house free agents), followed by the NFL draft in April. Although free agency comes first, we’re taking a quick look ahead to the draft order today.

The Broncos currently hold six picks to use in the 2024 NFL draft, but they would like to acquire more selections through trades this spring.

Denver does not hold a second-round pick following the trade for coach Sean Payton last year. The team’s exact placement of picks beyond the third round is still to be determined pending the NFL handing out compensatory picks.

Round 1: own pick (12th overall)
Round 3: via NO (Sean Payton trade)
Round 4: via MIA (Bradley Chubb trade)
Round 5: own pick
Round 5: via NYJ (Jake Marin trade)
Round 6: via SF (Randy Gregory trade)

We won’t know the Broncos’ official order of picks until the NFL confirms it, but here’s our best effort at breaking down all the trades:

  • Denver’s original 2nd-round pick went to the Saints as part of the Payton trade.
  • The Broncos’ original 3rd-round pick went to the Seahawks as part of the Riley Moss draft-day trade in 2023.
  • Denver’s original 4th-round pick was traded to the Jets as part of the Jake Martin trade in 2022. Denver got a 5th-round pick from NY in the deal.
  • The Broncos got a 4th-round pick from the Dolphins as part of the Bradley Chubb trade in 2022.
  • Denver’s original 6th-round pick went to the Rams as part of the Kenny Young trade in 2021.
  • The Broncos got a 6th-round pick from the 49ers as part of the Randy Gregory trade last season.
  • Denver got a 7th-round pick back from San Francisco, but the Broncos sent a 7th-round pick to L.A. as part of the Young trade three years ago, then they traded a 7th-round pick to the Saints for kicker Wil Lutz last year, leaving them without a last-round pick.

Because of the number of trades Denver has made, it’s not exactly clear which picks are original and which are from other teams, but it looks like the Broncos should have six selections before making any additional trades. The 2024 NFL draft will be held in Detroit from April 25-27.

Bucs to pick at No. 26 overall in the 2024 NFL draft

Tampa Bay’s draft position is set after a division win and a playoff victory in 2023.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have their draft number for the first round locked in.

Tampa Bay is set to pick at No. 26 overall in the NFL draft, continuing a trend of picking later in the draft after recent success. The pick is the second-highest pick since 2021 and is seven spots lower than where the team picked in 2022 at No. 19.

The Bucs have never picked at No. 26, so 2023 will be the first time they’ve done so. The last player taken at that pick was Mazi Smith, a defensive lineman out of Michigan who was drafted by the Dallas Cowboys. Smith netted 13 tackles and one sack in 2023.

Assuming the team does not trade back like it did in 2022 to select defensive tackle Logan Hall (or trade up, for that matter), the Bucs will make that pick at No. 26 on Thursday, April 25 for the first night of the NFL draft in Detroit.

Chargers projected to receive compensatory pick in 2024 NFL draft

The Chargers are projected to have an additional seventh-round pick.

In the 2024 NFL draft, the Chargers will likely have an extra pick, according to Over The Cap.

Compensatory picks are awarded to teams who lose out on significant players in free agency and are awarded to those teams the next year.

The pick given to teams is calculated on a formula that includes a number of qualifiers, including the average per year (APY) of a contract signed, the percentage of snaps a player plays, and their awards and accolades for their performance, such as the AP All-Pro list or PFWA’s list.

Over The Cap projects Los Angeles to receive a seventh-round comp pick for their loss of linebacker Drue Tranquill, who signed with the Chiefs last offseason.

Tranquill has appeared in 18 games, including the playoffs, with eight starts, and has amassed 89 total tackles, eight tackles for loss, 4.5 sacks, two forced fumbles and a pass deflected.

The NFL will announce the finalized compensatory picks closer to the draft.

2024 NFL draft: Updated order of picks going into championship weekend

Now only four teams remain as we move into the Conference Championship round.

Four more teams were eliminated from the NFL playoffs this weekend, as the Houston Texans, Green Bay Packers, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Buffalo Bills were sent home by their competitors. Now only four teams remain as we move into the Conference Championship round.

Here’s the updated order of picks for the 2024 NFL draft heading into championship weekend.

Broncos excited to pick 12th overall in 2024 NFL draft

“We haven’t had a first-round pick since 2021, and that one worked out pretty well. We’re excited,” Broncos GM George Paton said.

For the first time in three years, the Denver Broncos will hold a first-round pick in the NFL draft this spring.

After going 8-9 in 2023, the Broncos are set to select 12th overall in April’s draft. The last time Denver had a first-round pick, general manager George Paton used it to select cornerback Pat Surtain ninth overall in 2021.

“It’s important to hit on most of your picks, especially when you’re picking that high,” Paton said during his end-of-season press conference last week. “We haven’t had a first-round pick since 2021, and that one worked out pretty well. We’re excited, but we don’t want to have to pick up here again. We’re excited to be picking there.”

The last time the Broncos held the 12th overall pick, they landed running back Knowshon Moreno in 2009. One year earlier, Denver picked left tackle Ryan Clady 12th overall.

The Broncos are currently over the salary cap and Paton has already said the team won’t be active in the early stages of free agency. Not being able to make big moves in free agency makes it even more important for Denver to hit on its draft picks this spring.

Paton hinted that the team could acquire more selections through trades.

“We’re picking high, and we have six picks,” the GM said. “We could have more. You know we like picks. We’ll go from there.”

The 2024 NFL draft will be held in Detroit from April 25-27.

2024 NFL draft: Updated order of picks going into divisional round

There may be no fate worse for an NFL team than getting bounced from the Wild-Card round.

There may be no fate worse for an NFL team than getting bounced from the Wild-Card round. At least the league’s worst teams get a high draft pick out of it. Getting to the playoffs is an achievement worth celebrating, but if that’s as far as your team can rise it may also get in the way of much-needed changes. We can certainly count the Dallas Cowboys in that club after their third-straight 12-5 season that ended in an early playoff exit. The same could be said of the Philadelphia Eagles, who have also been booted from the tournament early as they finished their collapse.

Let’s see where everybody is slotted in the draft order now. Here’s the updated order of picks for the 2024 NFL draft going into the divisional round.

2024 NFL draft: Updated order of picks going into the playoffs

Here is the full updated order of picks heading into the playoffs.

The Seahawks have been eliminated from the playoffs, which will begin this coming weekend. We now know which teams will be picking with picks 1-18 in next year’s NFL draft. The order of the remaining 14 selections will be determined by where each team finishes in the postseason.

Bengals secure 18th pick in 2024 NFL draft order

Here’s where the Bengals pick in the 2024 NFL draft.

The Cincinnati Bengals will pick 18th in the 2024 NFL draft.

Finishing the regular season at 9-8, the Bengals boast the latest pick in the order of any non-playoff team this year after playing in an AFC North in which every team finished with a winning record and sent three of the four to the postseason.

Before Cincinnati’s win over Cleveland in the season finale and other results, the Bengals could’ve picked roughly as high as No. 14.

Right at the season’s end, targets in that opening round for the Bengals will likely include mostly trench play on either side of the ball. But a defensive back to reinforce a unit that coughed up far too many explosive plays could be in the discussion too, as could a wide receiver despite drafting two last year, depending on what happens with Tee Higgins.
