Bucs could be awarded comp pick in 2024 NFL draft

Tampa Bay could be getting an extra draft pick for the efforts of one of its former safeties for their work in 2023.

Losing a player stings, but the NFL at least has a system to make up for it (somewhat, at least). The Tampa Bay Buccaneers could potentially be a benefactor of that system in 2024.

NFL compensatory picks are awarded to teams who lose out on significant players in free agency and are awarded to those teams the next year. The pick given to teams is calculated on a formula that includes a number of qualifiers, including APY of a contract signed, the percentage of snaps a player plays and their awards and accolades for their performance (such as AP All-Pro nods or PWFA awards). While these comp picks have not been officially announced by the NFL Management Council yet, Over the Cap projects these potential comp picks and estimates that the Bucs will get one for the 2024 NFL draft.

Over the Cap projects that the Bucs may get a comp pick for their loss of safety Mike Edwards in free agency to the Kansas City Chiefs, and they project it as a 7th-round pick. Edwards did not get any notable accolades from press awards in 2023, and he only played 57% of Kansas City’s 2023 defensive snaps, so a 7th-round projection would make a lot of sense.

In Kansas City this year, Edwards netted 32 solo tackles, one sack, two fumble recoveries and one interception. His cash AAV this year was $3,000,000.

On the other end of the spectrum, the Los Angeles Rams are set to be benefactors due to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Over the Cap projects that the Rams will get a fifth-round pick from quarterback Baker Mayfield for his efforts with the Bucs after he left the Rams at the end of the 2022 season.

15 free agents the Eagles can sign that don’t count against compensatory picks

We’re looking at 15 players the Philadelphia Eagles can sign in 2023 NFL Free Agency that won’t count against the compensatory pick formula

The NFL’s new league is less than a week away, and with the legal tampering period scheduled to start on Monday, Philadelphia will look to retool on defense, while making cost-effective decisions.

All-Pro quarterback Jalen Hurts and his contract is the biggest concern this offseason, but the Eagles will also need to navigate 19 looming free agents and the likelihood that they’ll lose C.J. Gardner-Johnson, Javon Hargrave and James Bradberry.

GM Howie Roseman has made it clear that he’s prepared to lose several key starters and he’ll retool via the draft with a handful of 2024 compensatory picks.

The formula is simple in nature.

If you lose more unrestricted free agents than you sign, you are eligible for that many compensatory selections. What round they come is determined by how big their contract is.

Roseman and other general managers can take advantage of the rule by signing players released before their contract expires. Those players don’t count toward the formula.

Plenty of players will be available to sign this offseason that can both help the team and not count against the formula.

Here are 15 players Philadelphia could sign that wouldn’t count against 2024 compensatory picks.

Chiefs lose out on compensatory pick due to Tyrann Mathieu waiting to sign with Saints

Tyrann Mathieu stuck it to the Chiefs by waiting to sign with Saints

Football is a chess match. Often times that goes well beyond the field of play. One area teams can try and gain a competitive advantage is via the compensatory pick formula.

For instance, the New England Patriots have been playing the system for a while, ensuring they signed few players who counted in the formula than they lost. Thus with the Raiders employing a staff and front office made up of a lot of former Patriots, they are now projected to receive three comp picks in next years’ draft.

Part of the rules surrounding which free agents qualify for compensatory picks involves timing. There is a window in which players can count against the formula. That window closed Monday at 1pm Pacific (4pm ET). Immediately after that deadline had passed, the Saints made it official with safety Tyrann Mathieu. Thus he didn’t count as a loss or a gain in the comp pick formula.

Had Mathieu been signed at any point between the start of free agency on March 16 and the deadline on Monday, May 2, he would have garnered the Chiefs a 4th round compensatory pick in the 2023 draft according to Over the Cap figures, while counting against the total for the team that signed him.

The Chiefs are already projected to have two comp picks coming their way in the 2023 draft — a round three pick from from the Bears hiring their former executive Ryan Poles as GM and a round seven pick from the loss of DT Jarran Reid to the Packers.

The Saints will own Mr Irrelevant with one seventh round comp pick via net value.

You can see the Raiders’ projected comp picks here.

Eagles won’t receive any compensatory picks in 2022 NFL Draft

The #NFL has released the list of 39 #compensatory picks awarded to 16 different teams in the,#NFLDaft2022

It’s hard to earn compensatory draft picks when your organization doesn’t have quality free agents getting signed by other teams around the league.

The NFL released the compensatory picks for the 2022 NFL draft and Philadelphia won’t receive any.

The Rams, Chargers, Cowboys and 49ers were among the teams to have multiple compensatory picks in April’s draft.

Compensatory picks are awarded to teams that suffered significant free agent losses the previous offseason, and did not offset them with similar additions to their roster.

Philadelphia’s most significant loss last offseason was Jalen Mills signing with the Patriots.

Ravens get 2 compensatory picks in 2021 NFL draft

Thanks to the losses of WR coach David Culley and defensive tackle Michael Pierce, the Baltimore Ravens have added two compensatory picks

The Baltimore Ravens will get a few more selections in the 2021 NFL draft thanks to their offseason losses over the last two years. The NFL announced the full list of compensatory picks, awarding the Ravens two of them.

The Ravens have received third-round (No. 104) and fifth-round (No. 183) compensatory picks. While the list doesn’t include the breakdown of how they were calculated exactly, it’s expected they’re from the loss of defensive tackle Michael Pierce last offseason and former wide receivers coach David Culley this offseason.

Under the NFL’s newly adopted minority hiring initiative, teams that lose a minority coach to an executive or head-coaching job will earn third-round compensatory picks in each of the next two NFL drafts. With the Texans hiring Culley to replace Bill O’Brien this offseason, he qualifies under the new initiative, seeing the Ravens get a third-round selection in the 2021 and 2022 NFL drafts.

The two additional compensatory picks will give Baltimore a total of seven selections in the 2021 NFL draft, and boy you better believe Ravens general manager Eric DeCosta is excited about it.

Thanks to excellent scouting and drafting over the years, Baltimore has been the best team in the league at acquiring these compensatory picks. With these latest selections, the Ravens continue to lead the NFL in compensatory picks, getting 53 of them since 1994. Considering Baltimore didn’t have a team until 1996, the fact they’re six ahead of the next-place team is an impressive feat.

Ravens expected to earn 2 compensatory picks in 2021 NFL draft

The Baltimore Ravens are expected to earn compensatory picks in the 2021 NFL draft after losing coach David Culley and DT Michael Pierce.

If the Baltimore Ravens could enter every draft with 20 picks, they probably still wouldn’t be happy and would actively look to trade back at some point to acquire more. But this offseason, the Ravens’ draft cupboard is pretty bare as they start thinking about the 2021 NFL draft.

Currently, Baltimore has just five picks in the 2021 NFL draft after trading for players like Yannick Ngakoue. But that’s before the NFL announces the compensatory picks, which should give the Ravens quite the boost in draft capital.

According to Over The Cap, the Ravens are set to earn two compensatory picks in the 2021 NFL draft — in the third- and fifth-round — bringing their total to seven draft picks. While the compensatory picks aren’t locked in stone, OTC has been one of the best at predicting which teams will earn what, so it’s a pretty safe bet.

Baltimore’s third-round compensatory pick is already guaranteed to happen. With the Houston Texans hiring former Ravens wide receivers coach David Culley as their new head coach, Baltimore earns a third-round compensatory pick in both the 2021 and 2022 NFL drafts. It’s a part of the league’s new minority hiring initiative, unanimously agreed to by team owners in November as a way to promote minority head coach and general manager candidates.

It’s the fifth-round pick that OTC is really predicting. They’re expecting defensive tackle Michael Pierce, who signed with the Minnesota Vikings last year but opted out of the 2020 season under the NFL’s COVID-19 protocols, to earn one of the last remaining fifth-round picks. The Vikings signed Pierce to a three-year $27 million contract that has an APY of $9 million, which is a major factor in the compensatory pick formula, per OTC.

While the compensatory picks haven’t been announced yet, here are the expected Ravens’ 2021 NFL draft picks.

Round Pick #
1st 27
2nd 58
3rd 104 *Comp pick for David Culley
4th 131
5th 169
5th 184 *Comp pick for Michael Pierce
6th 211

Report: Jets won’t get compensatory pick for Robby Anderson

The Jets will not be receiving a compensatory pick for Robby Anderson, who left in free agency to sign a two-year deal with the Panthers.

In the end, the Jets let Robby Anderson walk for nothing.

That’s because even though the wide receiver signed with the Panthers, the Jets signed too many free agents to qualify for a compensatory pick in 2021, according to ESPN’s Rich Cimini. Cimini cited OverTheCap, which is highly accurate in its 32-pick compensatory projections.

New York has only received one compensatory pick since 2015. The Jets received the 107th pick in the third round of the 2017 NFL Draft, awarded to them after the losses of unrestricted free agents, Chris Ivory, Damon Harrison and Demario Davis.

If a team loses more players that qualify as compensatory free agents than it signs during free agency, that team is eligible for compensatory picks in the following NFL draft.

By signing players such as George Fant, Connor McGovern, Greg Van Roten, Josh Andrews and Breshad Perriman, the Jets gained five compensatory free agents but only lost four in the process with the likes of Anderson, Brandon Shell, Brent Qvale and Tom Compton.

Prior to the 2019 NFL deadline, the Jets toyed with the idea of trading Anderson rather than lose him in free agency. When New York elected not to trade its top receiver, it seemed like a long-term extension was possible, but it never came to fruition.

Joe Douglas would not budge off of a $10 million-per-year offer, setting a firm price and allowing Anderson to reunite with his former college coach in free agency. Matt Rhule and the Panthers ended up giving Anderson a two-year deal worth $20 million with $12 million guaranteed in the first year.

Ravens expected to have 2 compensatory picks in 2020 NFL Draft

The Baltimore Ravens lost key players last offseason but might have been hurt by the compensatory pick formula they’ve utilized so much

The Baltimore Ravens saw a good number of high-profile players leave the organization in free agency last offseason. Outside linebackers Za’Darius Smith and C.J. Mosley signed huge deals with other teams while the Ravens also lost legend Terrell Suggs, wide receiver John Brown. Baltimore seemed to be willing to let those guys go, both because they couldn’t reasonably match the offers handed out and because they’d get rewarded with compensatory picks.

According to Over The Cap, the Ravens will indeed get some comp picks in return, but maybe not at the levels they had been hoping. Thanks to the NFL’s compensatory-pick formula, Baltimore is set to get two fourth-round picks back.

The Ravens signed running back Mark Ingram and safety Earl Thomas in free agency, helping to negate the loss of Smith and Suggs in the formula. And with both Mosley missing games due to injury, it lowered his value from what many expected to be a third-round comp pick to the fourth round.

If Over The Cap’s valuations hold true, it’ll be a big blow to Baltimore in the 2020 NFL draft. The Ravens have loved to game the comp-pick system in previous years, factoring it into decisions on a player’s value to them. But in the case of Smith, Mosley and Suggs, Baltimore could have really used their presence in 2019 as they went on a 14-2 tear but failed to win in the postseason. Both inside and outside linebacker was a point of frustration for the Ravens, with injuries and poor play plaguing the team, forcing them to find free-agent help in the middle of the season.
