Sean Payton wants to make sure Broncos’ next QB doesn’t become a meme

“Our job is to make sure this next one doesn’t have a line through it,” Sean Payton said of the Broncos’ search for a quarterback.

Speaking at the NFL combine in Indianapolis last week, Denver Broncos coach Sean Payton acknowledged the team’s search for a quarterback.

“Yeah, we better,” Payton said when asked if he has embraced the idea of finding a solution at quarterback. “In this league — which is very competitive in our division — it’s vital.”

Payton then referenced a funny meme that he wants Denver’s next QB to avoid.

“I saw this humorous meme the other day where there’s a Broncos fan with a shirt on with like eight quarterback’s names crossed through them and he’s drinking the quarterback ‘Kool-Aid,’” Payton said. “Our job is to make sure this next one doesn’t have a line through it.”

Our best guess is that this is the picture Payton saw:

The above photo features 10 quarterbacks (11 if you count Kendall Hinton), but you can’t blame Payton for losing count.

The biggest takeaway from Payton’s comment is that he referenced the team’s “next” quarterback, all but confirming Russell Wilson was on his way out (news that is now official).

Drew Brees played 15 years with the New Orleans Saints under Payton. Broncos fans would love to land a QB with that kind of longevity in 2024.

Breaking down Rams’ picks in Touchdown Wire’s latest 2-round mock draft

Touchdown Wire’s Doug Farrar released a 2-round mock draft after the combine, fortifying the trenches for the Rams

It’s anyone’s guess as to which position the Los Angeles Rams will address first in this year’s draft. Cornerback and edge rusher are two of their biggest needs, but the Rams have also expressed interest in wide receivers and could use offensive line help, too.

In Doug Farrar’s latest mock draft for Touchdown Wire, the Rams address the O-line first and also add a pass rusher with their second pick. In Round 1, they land Taliese Fuaga out of Oregon State.

Round 1, Pick 19: OT Taliese Fuaga, Oregon State

Though he played right tackle in college, he’s a candidate to move to guard, which would help the Rams immensely if Kevin Dotson leaves in free agency. Even if Dotson returns, Fuaga would be a solid swing tackle initially before eventually getting a crack to replace Rob Havenstein as the starting right tackle.

Fuaga tested extremely well at the combine for a 6-foot-6 and 324-pound tackle. He ran a 5.13 in the 50-yard dash and posted a 32-inch vertical, showing off the athleticism that will make him a first-round pick.

Round 2, Pick 51: OLB Marshawn Kneeland, Western Michigan

In the second round, the Rams add Marshawn Kneeland out of Western Michigan. The edge rusher is 6-foot-3 and 267 pounds, and he ran a 4.75 in the 40-yard dash. He fits best as a stand-up edge rusher in a scheme like the Rams’, with his 1.66-second 10-yard split showing the type of burst he has off the line. He’s plenty explosive, too, as evidenced by his 35.5-inch vertical.

With the Rams needing an edge rusher to pair alongside Byron Young, Kneeland would be a good selection in Round 2, though it’s possible the Rams would be able to get him a little bit later if they wait.

Malik Nabers seemingly had a way-too-candid initial reaction about choosing between the Falcons and Titans

Malik Nabers may not be too enthused about playing for the Falcons or Titans.

Former star LSU receiver Malik Nabers didn’t participate in drills and only ent through interviews at the NFL combine this past weekend, but that didn’t keep him from having a viral moment in Indianapolis.

Nabers — the runner-up for the Biletnikoff Award and second-leading receiver in college football this past season — is widely viewed as a top-10 pick in next month’s draft. The Tennessee Titans (pick No. 7) and Atlanta Falcons (pick No. 8) are two teams that could be targeting a wideout in that range.

During an interview at the combine with CBS, Nabers underwent a makeshift personality test to determine where he’d be drafted. At the end of the clip, he was told he was going to the Falcons or the Titans.

His initial reaction told the whole story.

“Oof,” Nabers responded instinctively.

Nabers later backtracked a bit, at least when it came to the Falcons.

“That’s pretty good, I ain’t gonna lie,” he said. “Atlanta wouldn’t be too bad.”

It’s easy to see why Nabers may not be thrilled with either destination considering neither has a long-term quarterback in place. Desmond Ridder and Taylor Heinicke struggled for the Falcons in 2023, and the team is already loaded with talent at the skill positions with players like Drake London, Kyle Pitts and Bijan Robinson, all of whom are on rookie deals.

Meanwhile Ryan Tannehill is a pending free agent for Tennessee, and Will Levis remains a largely unproven commodity entering his second season in the league.

Perhaps Nabers just thought it was a difficult choice, but it seems he’s not particularly enthused about playing for the Falcons or Titans.

LOOK: Michigan State football OL Nick Samac at the NFL Combine

Nick Samac competed at the 2024 NFL Combine this past weekend:

Michigan State only sent one player to the 2024 NFL Combine, that being 5th year senior Nick Samac. Samac has been a mainstay on MSU’s offensive line, specifically at the center position, since he joined the program in 2019.

According to NFL Network analyst Daniel Jeremiah, Samac has a late round draft grade, but does believe that Samac is worthy of a pick. Samac had a chance to validate that at the 2024 NFL Combine.

Check out the measurables Samac sported at the combine:

Samac did not run a 40-yard dash at the combine.

Sedrick Van Pran-Granger’s 40-yard dash, NFL combine performance

Georgia offensive lineman Sedrick Van-Pran Granger ran the 40-yard dash and more at the NFL combine

Georgia Bulldogs center Sedrick Van Pran-Granger put together a solid showing at the 2024 NFL combine. Van Pran-Granger is projected to be one of the first centers selected in the draft and is widely considered to be a second- or third-round prospect.

Van Pran-Granger met with numerous NFL teams at the combine and is ready to lead an NFL offensive line. The former All-SEC center posted a 5.20 second 40-yard dash. Van Pran-Granger is a good athlete with a significant amount of starting experience.

Van Pran-Granger is ranked as the No. 7 interior offensive lineman in the 2024 NFL draft. How did Sedrick Van Pran-Granger perform at the 2024 NFL combine?

13 NFL Combine standouts who could help the Chiefs in 2024

These 13 combine standouts are players that the #Chiefs should keep their eyes on in the 2024 NFL Draft.

The Kansas City Chiefs will attempt to win their third-consecutive Super Bowl next season and need to bulk up their roster in the coming months to field a team capable of achieving such a difficult task.

While free agency is sure to provide Kansas City with some options later in March, the 2024 NFL Draft in April will be the best opportunity for the Chiefs to find talented players who can help them for years to come.

The NFL Scouting Combine last week gave the team’s scouts plenty to think about as they build Kansas City’s draft board. Several standout players separated themselves from the competition with their standout performances in Indianapolis, Indiana. They may be among the prospects that the Chiefs have their eyes on heading into the most crucial part of the offseason.

Check out which players Kansas City might be interested in after testing particularly well at the combine:
