New Year’s resolutions for each NFL team

As the ball drops and we enter a new year, let’s take a look at the resolutions for each NFL team.

A new year means new beginnings, a chance to start fresh, to make amends. And this goes for NFL teams just as it does for ol’ stubborn Aunt Patty. In the constant NFL grind, preparing for the week-to-week unknowns while also planning for the future, it’s usually good for franchises to stop and make a note of how they’re feeling. Happy? Sad? Defeated? A Bengal? Perhaps the team is doing spectacular, but the video department isn’t very stealth?

Whatever the reason, New Year’s resolutions are a good thing—sticking to them is another matter, of course, but that doesn’t mean file 13 them before the ball drops.

So, should auld acquaintance—or, in this case, roster moves— be forgot and never brought to mind…Let’s take a look at the New Year’s resolutions for each NFL team.

Cincinnati Bengals

Mandatory Credit: David Kohl-USA TODAY Sports

The Bengals had a rough 2019, with only two wins and multiple issues in multiple spots. They still have one of the best helmets in the NFL, though, and the team can only go up from here—not sure if there’s anything underneath “rock bottom.”

2020 Resolution: Don’t “Burrow” yourselves too deep in the “new quarterback” hole. Sure, getting a quarterback to replace Andy Dalton—sorry, Ryan Finley—seems like the to-do in Cincy. Especially when Joe Burrow will be sitting there at No. 1 in the draft. But consider this: The defense is awful. Head coach Zac Taylor and the franchise would do best in 2020 (and beyond) to build a more formidable bunch on that side of the ball.

  • Green Bay has covered the spread in four of its last five games against the NFC North.
  • The favorite is 19-7 ATS in the last 26 meetings between the Packers and Lions.
  • The total has gone Over in each of the last four meetings in Detroit.

Prediction

Packers 28, Lions 14

Moneyline (?)

The Packers (-667) need this win to secure a first-round bye, which is hugely beneficial for a team. They can also clinch home-field advantage in the playoffs with a win and San Francisco 49ers loss.

In other words, they’re going to do everything possible to win. However, I can’t justify suggesting to anyone to lay that kind of chalk. Every $6.67 wagered on the Packers ML will only profit $1 if they win.

Against the Spread (?)

The Packers (-12.5) are double-digit favorites on the road. The oddsmakers see them as the far better team, and that will show on Sunday afternoon. They’ll beat the Lions by at least two touchdowns and roll to a win.

Take the PACKERS (-110) to cover the spread.

Over/Under (?)

The O/U is set at 42.5 points, and although Detroit’s offense has been terrible, the defense is going to struggle to stop Green Bay. Still, it won’t be enough to push to total Over 42 points.

Take the UNDER (-106), but expect a nail biter with this bet.

Chicago Bears at Minnesota Vikings odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Sunday’s Chicago Bears at Minnesota Vikings sports betting odds and lines, with Week 16 NFL betting picks, tips and bets.

The Chicago Bears (7-8) visit the playoff-bound Minnesota Vikings (10-5) Sunday with an 1 p.m. ET kickoff at U.S. Bank Stadium. We analyze the Bears-Vikings odds and sports betting lines, while providing betting tips and advice on this Week 17 NFL matchup.

Bears at Vikings: Week 17 preview, betting trends and notes

Looking to place a bet on this game or others? Sign up at BetMGM!

  • The Bears eliminated the Vikings from the 2018 playoffs with 24-10 Week 17 victory at U.S. Bank Stadium.
  • The Bears are 5-0 against the spread (ATS) in their five meetings with the Vikings.
  • Minnesota is 6-2-1 ATS in its last nine games against teams with losing records.
  • The Vikings and Bears have hit the Under in four of the last five meetings.
  • Chicago is 2-8 ATS in its last 10 games.
  • Minnesota is 6-1 against the moneyline in its last seven home games against Chicago, but the only loss was the last meeting.
  • Both teams are coming off inept, humbling losses – the Bears losing at home 26-3 to the Kansas City Chiefs, and the Vikings losing their first home game of the season 23-10 to the Green Bay Packers.

Bears at Vikings: Key injuries

Vikings: The injury report only shows one player as not practicing – Pro Bowl snub LB Eric Kendricks (quadriceps). RB’s Dalvin Cook (shoulder) and Alexander Mattison (ankle) have been limited and neither is expected to play. With Minnesota locked in as the No. 6 seed, several key veterans on both sides of the ball could be pulled early.

Bears: Four players didn’t practice Thursday – DL Akiem Hicks (elbow), NT Eddie Goldman (concussion), WR Taylor Gabriel (concussion) and OL Bobby Massie (ankle). Some of these guys may be making business decisions as to play a meaningless game.

Prediction

Vikings 20, Bears 16

Moneyline (?)

For only giving away 1.5 points, Minnesota (-129) is a little stiff. Chicago is +105, so this one pretty much bets itself. If you think Chicago is going to beat Vikings QB Kirk Cousins a fourth consecutive game, take the Bears here instead of being given a paltry 1.5 points.

Every $1 wagered on the Bears ML would profit $1.05 if they win.

Against the Spread (?)

As mentioned above, the line is Vikings -1.5. Both teams are -110 because it is what is so perilous about putting bets down in Week 17. Minnesota has absolutely nothing to play for or risk Sunday. With the Vikings coming off a national humbling to the Packers and the Bears’ recent dominance of them, if the Vikes lay down in front of their home fans, it will have a negative backlash. If you think motivation of a veteran means anything, take the Vikings at a better price than the moneyline.

Over/Under (?)

This is the most difficult bet of them all because 36.5 (Over -115, Under -106) is such a low number. But these teams tend to hit the Under. It won’t take much to hit the Over and these are teams with opportunistic defenses and special teams, but the Bears have dominated Cousins and, in the last three games against Minnesota, Chicago QB Mitch Trubisky has been knocked out of two of them. The sportsbooks are daring you to take the Over. Take the UNDER 36.5 (-106), but it will be close.

POLL: Who wins Week 17 contest between Bears and Vikings?

The Bears will wrap up what’s been a disappointing 2019 season with an opportunity to complete a season sweep of the playoff-bound Vikings.

While Sunday’s game against the Vikings could’ve had meaningful playoff implications for the Bears, instead Chicago will wrap up what’s been a disappointing 2019 season with an opportunity to complete a season sweep of the playoff-bound Vikings.

Not that the Bears have shown much in these last two weeks that proves that they’re capable of doing just that. But that’s what the hope is as Chicago will have to watch from home as the Packers and Vikings look to make playoff runs.

The Bears played less-than-inspiring football against the Chiefs on a primetime stage on Sunday, and while there isn’t anything meaningful left to play for, pride is still on the table.

Even if the Bears can manage a win — and a second sweep of an NFC North opponent this year, after sweeping the Lions — it won’t mean much in the grand scheme of things. But it’d be nice for Chicago to go out with a win and even a sliver of confidence heading into an important offseason.

With that said, who wins on Sunday?

Bears open as 7.5-point underdogs vs. Vikings in Week 17

Vegas, like many others, aren’t feeling confident in the Bears’ chances to get a win over the Vikings in their season finale.

The Chicago Bears (7-8) will head to Minnesota to face the Vikings (10-4) in their season finale next Sunday, and these teams couldn’t be headed in more opposite directions.

While the Bears are headed home, missing the playoffs for the eighth time this decade, the Vikings are headed to the postseason, along with division rivals Green Bay.

The Vikings face the Packers Monday night with a chance to win the NFC North, if they win out and the Packers lose out, so next Sunday’s meeting could have playoff implications for the Vikings.

The Bears, however, are left searching for answers after another embarrassing loss, this time to the Kansas City Chiefs, where Chicago’s offense couldn’t manage a touchdown in a 26-3 loss in their home finale.

While the Bears dealt the Vikings a brutal defeat back in Week 4, these aren’t the same teams that met back in September.

With the Bears reverting back the struggles that have defined their season, Vegas isn’t confident in Chicago’s chances against Minnesota.

The Bears have opened as 7.5-point underdogs against the Vikings, according to BetMGM.

After their playoff hopes were dashed, Chicago will have plenty of questions to answer heading into an important and busy offseason.

Chicago Bears’ 2020 opponents set

While there are still two weeks left in the 2019 season, the Bears’ 2020 opponents have been set.

While there’s still two weeks remaining in the Chicago Bears’ 2019 season, their opponents for 2020 have been set.

The Bears will face the AFC South and NFC South next season, which includes home games against the Houston Texans, Indianapolis Colts and New Orleans Saints, as well as away games against the Atlanta Falcons, Carolina Panthers and Tennessee Titans.

With the Bears finishing third in the NFC North, they’ll play a third-place schedule, which should be easier than the first-place schedule they faced this season.

Some of the marquee matchups feature Deshaun Watson and the Texans coming to Soldier Field to face Mitchell Trubisky and the Bears, as well as rematches against the Saints and Los Angeles Rams, as well as NFC North rivalries.

Here’s a look at the Bears’ 2020 opponents:

Home Away
Houston Texans Atlanta Falcons
Indianapolis Colts Carolina Panthers
New Orleans Saints Jacksonville Jaguars
New York Giants Los Angeles Rams
Tampa Bay Buccaneers Tennessee Titans
Detroit Lions Detroit Lions
Green Bay Packers Green Bay Packers
Minnesota Vikings Minnesota Vikings

The Bears, who were eliminated from playoff contention last week, conclude the 2019 season with games against the Kansas City Chiefs and Minnesota Vikings.

  • In games where Minnesota has been favored between 3.5 and 4.5 points, the Vikings are 9-0 against the moneyline and 8-1 ATS – hitting the Over in 14 of 20 games in that scenario.

Prediction

Vikings 23, Packers Bay 20

Moneyline (?)

Minnesota is the only team in the league that is unbeaten at home this season (6-0) and has protected their home-field advantage extremely well, winning games by 16, 20, 18, 10, 6 and 13 points. That can explain why they have a big moneyline number (-239). The Packers are getting a good number (+190), and it’s rare for any 11-3 team to get that kind of love from the sportsbooks. We would lean toward the Vikings, but not by much given the return to go with Green Bay and the lack of it for Minnesota.

Against the Spread (?)

Minnesota has blown out the 3.5-point number all season and are the favorite despite giving up the points (-139). The money is going on Minnesota, which explains the spread, but if you’re willing to give Aaron Rodgers and the PACKERS +3.5 (+115) that many points, it’s hard to deny taking him. Go with the visitors.

New to sports betting? Every $1.15 wagered on the Packers moneyline will profit $1 if they don’t lose by 4 or more points or win outright.

Over/Under (?)

The Vikings and Packers tend to play games close to the vest and work the clock with long drives that drain the clock. Both defenses have been strong in the red zone and forced teams to settle for field goals more often than touchdowns. The Over 46.5 (+100) is getting better odds than the under (-121), but this one has the smell of a tightly contested, conservative game plan for both offense, which lends itself to lower scores. Take the UNDER 46.5.

NFC playoff picture after Week 15

If the season ended today, the Vikings would hit the road to play Drew Brees and the Saints in New Orleans.

1st-round bye

Seahawks, 11-3
Packers, 11-3

Wait, how did this happen?!

After the Seahawks beat the Panthers and the Packers beat the Bears, here we are with the two teams on top of the NFC North.

Seattle’s lead looks safe, at least for Week 16. The Seahawks will host the Cardinals in Week 16, before hosting the 49ers in what could end up being the difference for homefield advantage or a bye week.

The Packers, meanwhile, travel to play the Vikings on Monday Night Football in Week 16. That’s a huge game for both teams. In Week 17, the Packers play the Lions in Detroit.

Wildcard matchups

No. 6 Vikings (10-4) at No. 3 Saints (11-3)

This would be a nightmare for the Vikings, but there are still two weeks to figure this all out.

The Vikings still need a win, or a Rams loss, to clinch a playoff spot. They also have an outside shot to win the NFC North if they win out and the Packers lose out.

New Orleans has a tough Week 15 matchup, facing off against the Titans in Tennessee on a short week.

No. 5 49ers (11-3) at No. 4 Cowboys (7-7)

The 49ers blew a game against the Falcons this week, which was a pretty costly loss. They’ll look to get back on track this week at home against the Rams before heading to Seattle for that ever-so-important Week 17 game.

What a mess the NFC East is.

The Cowboys travel to play the Eagles in Week 16. That game will pretty much decide the NFC East assuming both the Cowboys and Eagles win in Week 17 against the Redskins and Giants, respectively.

In the hunt

Rams (8-6)

The Rams are hoping for a miracle. If Los Angeles wins out against the 49ers and Cardinals, and if the Vikings fall to the Packers and Bears, the Rams will make the playoffs as a wild card team.

Eagles (7-7)

See above for the Cowboys section. If the Eagles can take down Dak and Co. at home, they are in the driver’s seat for the NFC East title.

Vikings remain 7th in USA TODAY power rankings

The Vikings are still the second wild card team in the NFC.

The Vikings improved to 10-4 on the season with their win over the Chargers in Week 15.

The road win was an impressive one, especially for Minnesota’s defense.

Despite the win, the Vikings remain seventh in USA TODAY’s weekly power rankings.

The Vikings will be tested in Week 16 at home against the Packers on Monday Night Football. The Packers are the sixth-ranked team in the rankings with an 11-3 record.

A win would guarantee a trip to the playoffs for the Vikings, as would a Rams loss to the 49ers. If the Vikings win out against the Packers and Bears, and the Packers fall to the Vikings and Lions, Minnesota will win the NFC North.

To round out the NFC North, the Bears rank 17th and the Lions rank 31st.
