Orlando City roars into 2022 U.S. Open Cup final with 5-1 demolition of New York Red Bulls

Orlando will host the U.S. Open Cup final after a big win

César Araújo wasn’t supposed to be the hero, but Orlando City is in the 2022 U.S. Open Cup final after the young midfielder scored his first two goals for the club in a wild 5-1 win over the New York Red Bulls Thursday night.

Despite the typical Florida heat, a high-tempo, acrimonious game saw both teams create plenty of chances. Patryk Klimala’s bicycle kick thwacked off the crossbar, with Luquinhas nearly scoring in the chaos that followed only for Pedro Gallese to make a sharp save.

Klimala beat Gallese again just minutes later, but that 20-yard bid thumped off the post and away to safety. Orlando were struggling as the half wore on, but produced a beautiful 39th minute counter-attack that ended with Alexandre Pato firing over the bar from a promising spot.

There were chances galore, but in first half stoppage time Lewis Morgan finally produced the finish required. The Red Bulls went long on the counter, and while Klimala’s pass missed Omir Fernandez, Morgan pinged a laser of a first-time shot into the upper corner to give the visitors the lead.

It wasn’t enough for the Red Bulls to actually get into the locker room ahead, though. With virtually the last play of the half, Antonio Carlos snapped a header down past Carlos Coronel, only for it to, you guessed it, hit the post. Orlando’s César Araújo swept the rebound home, capping off a wild half.

The clouds opened during the break, but nothing much else changed. Joao Moutinho’s cutback fooled the Red Bulls defense, leaving a window for Maurico Pereyra to make it 2-1 roughly 100 seconds after play resumed.

Just after the hour mark, Araújo bagged a brace in a near repeat of his first goal. Again, it was an Orlando corner that wasn’t initially cleared, and though it didn’t take a shot off the post this time, Araújo guided the rebound home through a herd of players.

From there, Orlando were rampant on the counter. Facundo Torres, amid suspicions of Benji Michel being offside earlier in the counter, made it 4-1, a goal that required nearly a full minute of discussion between referee Victor Rivas and his crew to sort out. Michel then cleverly flicked a fifth past Coronel seven minutes later.

The win means Orlando is guaranteed to host the Open Cup final, which will take place in either the first or second week of September. They’ll play either Sporting Kansas City or Sacramento Republic FC.

US Open Cup semifinal and final hosting scenarios revealed

Sacramento gets a home semifinal!

U.S. Soccer conducted the final draw for the 2022 U.S. Open Cup, revealing who would host July’s two semifinal games, as well as determining the hosting priority for the final in September.

Neutrals got one outcome they wanted, with USL Championship club Sacramento Republic FC ending up the host of the western side of the bracket’s semifinal. Sacramento will host Sporting Kansas City at Heart Health Park, a venue in which they’ve tasted defeat just once in 16 Open Cup games over the years.

Sacramento produced a stunning upset Tuesday night to earn their place in the semifinals, defeating the LA Galaxy at Dignity Health Sports Park.

Over in the east, the winner of the Orlando City vs. Nashville SC quarterfinal (which will take place in Florida on June 29) will host the other semifinal, with the New York Red Bulls heading to either Exploria Stadium or Geodis Park.

Both semifinals do not have announced dates or times, though U.S. Soccer has scheduled both to be played on either July 26 or July 27.

The good news for Sacramento turned sour in the draw for hosting priority in the final. The Republic were drawn into the lowest priority, meaning that no matter who wins in the east, Sacramento will have to head on the road. The Orlando/Nashville winner got top priority, with Sporting KC second and the Red Bulls in third.

The date and time of the final is not settled, with U.S. Soccer stating that the game could be played on September 6-7 or September 13-14.

Chicharito scored an incredible last-second goal to stun the Red Bulls

Another day at the office for the Galaxy star.

Soccer is often a game where you have to bide your time for that one perfect moment. In a low-scoring sport, it’s not only a test of patience and a stubborn resolve to keep finishing every run and tackle hard, but of your capacity to capitalize on a chance that, very likely, might not come again. Not everyone can be so clutch to find the ball on their foot at the right time and, also, slash it through the back of the net.

Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez has made a name for being that player for his teams throughout his stellar international career. In the MLS season opener against defending the MLS champion, New York Red Bulls, the L.A. Galaxy (+155) star reminded everyone of his steely nerves.

With the game tied at 0-0 in the final minute of regulation and the clock about to strike midnight, er, stoppage time, Chicharito broke through.

In terms of season-opening game-winning goals, it doesn’t get any bigger or more stunning than a last-minute top-shelf strike right below the crossbar. But you’d be hard-pressed to convince anyone it’s a surprise that Chicharito pulled off such a remarkable athletic feat in crunch time.

The Galaxy landed a massive haymaker on the best team in the league, and it was another day at the office for their international star.

Rutgers men’s soccer benefitting from location and MLS academy ties

Rutgers men’s soccer is building its roster with a very strong MLS academy flair.

[mm-video type=video id=01fn59p8v9714xx5va92 playlist_id=none player_id=none image=https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/upload/video/thumbnail/mmplus/01fn59p8v9714xx5va92/01fn59p8v9714xx5va92-8e138ebf36bfcf0ab7310cd13d86814e.jpg]

Jim McElderry’s Thanksgiving plans includes the usual dose of food and family. But for the Rutgers men’s soccer coach, there with a healthy mix of soccer as well. McElderry plans on hitting up academy and club games over the holiday weekend as he turns his focus from on the field to recruiting.

Rutgers finished the season 9-6-2 and with a 3-4-1 record in the Big Ten. It was a successful season for Rutgers and continued the development of the program under McElderry, now in his third year with the program.

One major reason for the growth of the program is a budding relationship with the local MLS academies. His roster includes several players who were developed through the academy system of the New York Red Bulls and the Philadelphia Union.

[lawrence-related id=4396]

“I don’t think we worry too much about their style and our style and it’s a little bit different. But what they both do – and we can include NYCFC as well – they attract good players, serious players, players who know how to balance their time well,” McElderry told ‘Rutgers Wire’ this week in a phone interview.

“You’re getting someone who is dedicated.”

The MLS academy system is unique in professional sports, taking players as young as middle school and developing them with an eye towards playing professional soccer at the MLS level. Some players will opt for the college system and McElderry has certainly done a good job of targeting those players who want an education before potentially signing with a  professional team.

Jackson Temple, named this season to the All-Big Ten Second Team, came up through the Union academy. Joey Zalinsky and Matthew Acosta, both named to the conference’s freshman team, are Red Bulls academy products. Nico Rosamilia, a surprise omission from the Big Ten freshman list, also played for the Red Bulls.

Rutgers is ideally situated between three MLS academies, allowing the program to benefit from three professional clubs that have a tremendous track record of scouting and developing players.

McElderry said that “Our location is really important and also the new facilities we have here.” He also highlighted the new Rodkin Center as well as the team’s recently developed soccer practice fields as key components in recruiting these academy players.

The Union and Red Bulls have among the best academy systems in MLS, producing multiple professional players including several currently part of the United States national team. NYCFC, although having arrived just a few years ago, is already producing quality players including Gio Reyna and Joe Scally, both starters for good teams in the German Bundesliga.

The quality of the facilities, a major upgrade for Rutgers in recent years, is a selling point for players used to training and playing at an MLS club’s practice center.

“They want to play. When they come and visit, they realize it is the next step for them,” McElderry said. “If they don’t get that pro contract then we become a good place for them to get that education and play at a high level.”

New York Red Bulls Academy standout Chris Tiao standing out for Rutgers men’s soccer

New York Red Bulls Academy prospect Chris Tiao has developed into one of the best defenders in the Big Ten this season for Rutgers men’s soccer.

[mm-video type=playlist id=01fc3gzhz7qrm49z6q player_id=none image=https://rutgerswire.usatoday.com/wp-content/plugins/mm-video/images/playlist-icon.png]

Chris Tiao has taken another step forward in his development this year, the Rutgers men’s soccer right back arguably the most consistent player on the field for his team this year. Formerly of the vaunted New York Red Bulls Academy, Tiao looks to be emerging as one of the best outside backs in the Big Ten this year.

In four games this year (three starts), Tiao has done a tremendous job in terms of his individual defending, a major reason why undefeated Rutgers (3-0-1) hasn’t allowed a goal yet through four games. But his overlapping runs and ability to condense the field through his pressing, while not making the boxscore, are important to Rutgers success so far in 2021.

Not surprisingly given his connection to the uber-fit Red Bulls Academy, Tiao has shown off his lungs this season, bringing a constant work rate to the group.

“Chris is a phenomenal athlete, kind of a track background at Randolph High School, along the way with Red Bulls as a youth academy player,” Rutgers men’s soccer head coach Jim McElderry said in his weekly press conference.

“But really unfortunate his first two years with injuries – really just kind of separated shoulder and he was out for six or seven weeks and then he hurt his knee last year just a tackle, a weird play and was out again for six or seven weeks so he’s missed a couple of season.

“So I’m just happy to see him out there playing and enjoying the soccer. He’s always super fit like one of the top fitness guys on our team, but we’re pushing them to take it to another level because I think he can be an elite athlete in the Big Ten. He just can do things that other guys can’t do for long periods of time and it’s impressive so I’m looking forward to him to continue to grow.”

Part of the reason for the intrigue around Tiao stems from his time with the Red Bulls. Considered one of the best academies in MLS, the club has a pyramid system for development that promotes young players up from youth teams to the USL level, all with the eventual hope of bringing players into the MLS team.

Tiao has spent considerable time in training as well as matches with the New York Red Bulls II, the USL team, where he’s had the opportunity to play matches against professional soccer players in what is the level below MLS.

Players such as Tyler Adams and John Tolkin have progressed from the Red Bulls academy team, up through the USL and eventually to MLS. Adams is currently a star midfielder with the United States national team and Tolkin has established himself as the Red Bulls starting left back in just his second season in the league.

Prediction

New York Red Bulls 1, FC Cincinnati 0

Moneyline (ML)

Back NEW YORK (-115) as the favorites to join Columbus Crew SC in advancing out of Group E to the knockout stage.

Both teams have negative goal differentials in losses to Columbus and wins over the depleted Atlanta United SC. The Red Bulls are minus-1 with one goal scored and two allowed. Cincinnati is minus-3 with one goal for and four against.

Injuries have played a major role in FC Cincinnati’s struggles, while the Red Bulls have skated through the tournament at full health. Expect New York’s starters to stay in this game just long enough to secure the victory and advance to the next round before being pulled out in order to preserve the perfect injury list.

Over/Under (O/U)

These two clubs played to a 3-2 Red Bulls victory when they met in a March 1 matchup early this season. Both teams were shut out by Columbus while producing a clean sheet of their own over Atlanta to start the MLS is Back Tournament.

Look for the Red Bulls to get on the board early before dialing it back with the reserves on the pitch. Take UNDER 2.5 (+115) as a great value bet at plus-money.

Columbus Crew vs. New York Red Bulls: MLS odds, betting lines and picks

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated Thursday at 7:40 a.m. ET.

Prediction

Columbus 1, New York Red Bulls 1

Moneyline (ML)

Columbus (+135) coasted to a 4-0 win against FC Cincinnati in the first match of the MLS is Back Tournament, but the Crew should get much more resistance from the Red Bulls (+185), who downed a strong Atlanta United club 1-0 in their tourney opener. This will be a hard-fought defensive battle, and a scoreless draw wouldn’t be terribly shocking. Either way, the best bet here is playing the DRAW (+270), with a return of nearly three times your stake.

A winning $10 DRAW wager on the Crew and Red Bulls would net a $27 profit if they finish in a tie.

Over/Under (O/U)

UNDER 2.5 (-106) is the play. While there was a total of five goals in a 3-2 Columbus win in the last head-to-head meeting July 28, 2019, these sides each posted clean sheets in their opener of this tournament. Expect fewer scoring opportunities on Thursday night. The Crew sailed through their first match, but will get a much sterner test from the Red Bulls.
