Giants fire Jason Garrett as offensive coordinator

The Giants have fired Jason Garrett as offensive coordinator

New York Giants head coach Joe Judge was quick to say the team’s loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Monday was not on the players.

He was quicker Tuesday to make a change, firing offensive coordinator Jason Garrett.

Garrett came to the Giants after a long run as head coach of the Dallas Cowboys.

The Giants are 3-7 and in last place in the NFC East.

Judge was asked about Garrett after the Giants were ripped by the Super Bowl champions.

The New York Daily News offers some background on the run of Garrett, which lasted 26 games.

Freddie Kitchens, Joe Judge’s senior offensive assistant, is expected to take over playcalling with Garrett gone …

The Giants rank dead last in the NFL with 42 offensive touchdowns since the start of the 2020 season …

Judge’s Giants were 31st in points (17.5) and yards (299.6) per game with Garrett calling the plays last season. They are 25th in points (18.9) and 23rd in yards (322.8) per game this season.

And Monday night’s 30-10 loss at Tampa saw the team post season lows in points, yards (215), first downs (15) and time of possession (24:21). The Giants offense also was 1-for-9 on third downs.

1 set of horrendous stats explain why the Giants fired Jason Garrett

Not a great tenure.

Look, the New York Giants’ woes aren’t ALL because offensive coordinator Jason Garrett has been at the helm of a Big Blue offense that’s just been awful for a couple of years.

But … they haven’t helped.

And on Tuesday, just a day after the Giants scored all of 10 points against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the franchise announced it was relieving Garrett of his duties.

Giants fans everywhere were pleased, although it seems like his successor will be Freddie Kitchens, so who knows if brings some of the magic he gave to the Browns in 2018.

So why let go of Garrett? This should explain a lot:

Yep. Bad all around.

Report: Giants fire offensive coordinator Jason Garrett

The New York Giants have fired offensive coordinator Jason Garrett following a Week 11 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

In news that was widely expected and perhaps too late to come about, the New York Giants have decided to fire offensive coordinator Jason Garrett.

Pat Leonard of the New York Daily News was the first to report the story.

The decision to move on from Garrett comes following a 30-10 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Monday night and growing frustrations in the locker room. Head coach Joe Judge had acknowledged as much following the Week 11 game.

“We’ve got to put our players in better position to make plays,” Judge said. “I told the players to show up Wednesday ready to go. . . We’ll have a plan for them.”

That plan isn’t just a new play caller, but a new offensive coordinator.

In a move those of us at Giants Wire suggested over a month ago, Freddie Kitchens, the team’s senior offensive assistant, will move into the role vacated by Garrett.

More to come…

Baldy Breakdown: Giants offense reaches a new low

Brian Baldinger breaks down film of the New York Giants’ loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 11 and…brace yourselves. It’s not good.

The New York Giants fell to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Monday night and unlike several of their other losses this season, there were no moral victories to be found.

Moral victories aren’t victories anyway, but at least they don’t leave a completely disgusting taste in the mouth. The same could not be said in Week 11. It was vile.

Even to the naked eye and the most casual of fans, the Giants’ offense hit a new low. They scored just 10 points against a struggling defense and seven of those came after an interception set them up at the 5-yard line. Even the first three only came after a scripted opening series.

The numbers were appalling — from third-down conversions to yardage production to yards per play. Any metric you choose to use, it was embarrassing for these Giants.

The film review will and has reflected that. Just ask retired offensive lineman and current NFL analyst, Brian Baldinger.

What can even be said about the above play? The Giants are beat with a three-man rush, three of their receivers converge in the same location (even knocking each other off their routes — some of which had to be incorrect), and the outlets simply aren’t there.

It’s a failure so deep it’s almost hard to fathom.

Even the plusses weren’t really plusses. Take running back Saquon Barkley, for example. The offensive captain returned for the first time in over a month and the result was less than stellar. Some good, but mostly bad.

There was one sole positive on the night. That came courtesy of the returning Andrew Thomas. Enjoy it.

There are still eight more weeks of this to go.

Giants continue sliding in latest USA TODAY power rankings

The New York Giants continued their recent slide in the USA TODAY power rankings following a Week 11 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The New York Giants dropped their seventh game of the season on Monday night, falling to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, 30-10.

It was another disastrous performance for the offense despite the return of running back Saquon Barkley, who once again looked like a shell of his former self. But Barkley wasn’t the only player who contributed to the offensive woes — everyone not named Andrew Thomas was responsible.

Following the loss, the Giants continued their slide in the USA TODAY power rankings.

27. Giants (26): Just a shame what’s befallen RB Saquon Barkley, easy as it was to miss his 12 mostly irrelevant touches as he returned to action Monday night.

Around and around we go…

Comparatively, the suddenly hot Washington Football Team rose one spot to No. 23 overall, while the Philadelphia Eagles climbed three spots to No. 18 overall.

The Eagles and Giants will square off on Sunday.

Meanwhile, following their embarrassing loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, the Dallas Cowboys dropped three spots to No. 5 overall.

The Arizona Cardinals have reclaimed the No. 1 overall spot and the Detroit Lions are back in place at No. 32 overall.

NFC East standings heading into Week 12

Taking a look at the Updated #NFCEast standings heading into Week 12 #FlyEaglesFly #Cowboys #Giants #WFT

As the Cowboys struggle to maintain their lead in the NFC East, the Eagles’ schedule strength is allowing some fans and pundits to dream of a Week 18 scenario for all the marbles.

At the Week 8 point, Dallas was 6-1, while Philadelphia was 2-5, and headed to Detroit for a must-win scenario against the winless Lions.

Since that point, the Cowboys are 1-2, and reeling after being thumped on the road by the improving Chiefs.

Philadelphia has won 2-3 in that process and now sits within striking distance for the final playoff.

Here are your current NFC East standings entering Week 12.

Giants legend Michael Strahan is headed to space

New York Giants legend Michael Strahan is headed to space in December, having been named to the crew of the NS-19 flight.

Former New York Giants legend and Pro Football Hall of Fame defensive end, Michael Strahan, is the latest celebrity to take to the heavens.

Strahan has ben named to the crew of the NS-19 flight that will blast off on December 9 for Jeff Bezos’ space exploration company, Blue Origin.

The crew will include two honorary guests and four paying customers. Guests include Good Morning America co-anchor Michael Strahan and Laura Shepard Churchley, the eldest daughter of Alan Shepard, who was the first American to fly to space. The four customers include space industry executive and philanthropist Dylan Taylor, investor Evan Dick, Bess Ventures founder Lane Bess, and Cameron Bess. Lane and Cameron Bess will become the first parent-child pair to fly in space.

So, Strahan is a guest, not a playing customer. They must include celebrities on these flights in order for the public to have any interest in the program.

Recently, 90 year-old Star Trek actor William Shatner was on one of Bezos’ missions.

Strahan’s post-football career has been on an upward trajectory so this news is symbolic of his rise to international stardom. Giant fans could probably care less about this development unless the mission was going to take some the underperforming Giants coaches and players along with them and not bringing them back.

2022 NFL draft: Giants currently projected to pick 5th, 7th

If the season ended today (and it doesn’t), the New York Giants would have the No. 5 and No. 7 overall picks in the 2022 NFL draft.

The New York Giants are back to being a bad football team again, falling to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Monday Night Football.

With another loss now in tow, the Giants are back to looking at the top of the 2022 NFL draft as opposed to looking at a possible playoff berth or the NFC East crown.

With the loss to the Buccaneers in Week 11, the Giants moved up in the draft order and are currently projected to select No. 5 overall come April.

With the Chicago Bears losing to the Baltimore Ravens, the Giants, who have their pick from the Justin Fields trade, are also projected to select No. 7 overall, according to Tankathon.

The Giants have three teams ahead of them who are 2-8 — the New York Jets, Houston Texans and Jacksonville Jaguars. And of course, the Detroit Lions, who are 0-9-1.

Stock up, down after Giants’ 30-10 loss to Buccaneers

Whose stock is up and whose is down following the New York Giants’ loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 11?

For everyone who thought the New York Giants’ loss to the Los Angeles Rams earlier this season was the low point, it may be time to think again.

The Giants looked about as bad as it got in a 30-10 loss to Tom Brady and the Super Bowl champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Raymond James Stadium on Monday night.

The Giants have never been a team that was great coming off the bye week, but they looked like they were better off staying on the bye as opposed to playing in this game.

Without an off week going the rest of the way, they have to shake it off, as they have a Philadelphia Eagles team who isn’t too far behind the Dallas Cowboys in the division.

Before the Giants limp back to East Rutherford for the game against the Eagles, let’s look at whose stock is up and down.

NFC playoff picture: Eagles have a manageable path to the final wild-card spot

NFC playoff picture: Philadelphia Eagles are clearly in the mix for the final Wild Card spot

The Eagles are on the way up and flourishing heading into Week 12.

After searching for an identity early on in the season, Nick Sirianni’s Birds are taking the “nasty approach” to getting wins these days.

Entering Week 12, Philadelphia sits in a prime position to make a late run to the postseason.

The mentally tough Arizona Cardinals are now the No. 1 overall seed in the conference after a win over the Seahawks on Sunday.

Philadelphia currently sits in second place in the NFC East and just a game out of the seventh and final playoff spot.

The 5-6 Eagles will have winnable matchups upcoming against both New York teams (Giants-Jets), along with two division matchups against Washington, a home matchup against the Giants, before closing with Dallas.
