Behind Enemy Lines: Previewing New Orleans Saints vs. Falcons

The New Orleans Saints need to defeat the Atlanta Falcons on Thanksgiving night to clinch a third consecutive NFC South division title.

[jwplayer jcPYpmHE]

The NFL’s three-game slate for Thanksgiving is headlined by the New Orleans Saints’ road trip to play the Atlanta Falcons; despite Atlanta’s sorry record (the Falcons are 3-8 on the year so far, and a combined 21-24 in the years since they blew a 28-3 lead in Super Bowl LI) this game has big implications for both teams. A Falcons loss could signal the end for embattled head coach Dan Quinn; it would also allow the Saints to clinch their third straight NFC South title and punch their ticket for the playoffs.

So with so much on the line, we reached out to Matt Urben over at Falcons Wire to get the best-informed perspective. Here’s what he had to say in our Q&A:

1. The Falcons handed out a beat down to the Saints and Panthers in back to back weeks, but Jameis Winston and the Bucs beat them in a boat race last Sunday. Have the Falcons found some winning strategies coming out of the bye or are they simply executing better?

It’s been a little bit of both, honestly. A lot was made of Dan Quinn relinquishing defensive coordinator duties to Jeff Ulbrich and Raheem Morris, but it comes down to the players executing and playing with confidence. The Falcons also moved Ricardo Allen to strong safety during the bye week and the coaching staff has credited him with improving the defensive communication by getting to play more in the box.

2. Julio Jones has missed two days of practice, as has starting tight end Austin Hooper. What’s the plan if neither of Matt Ryan’s top weapons can play Thursday?

Austin Hooper is almost certainly out, but Julio Jones is still a mystery. Missing practice or being limited early in the week has been pretty common for Jones, but he was noticeably in pain while playing through a shoulder injury in Week 12.Calvin Ridley has stepped up with Hooper out and has built great chemistry with Matt Ryan. Also, second-year WR Russell Gage had a career-best eight catches for 76 yards last week.

3. How is the new defensive play calling approach working? It gave the Saints trouble with six sacks against Drew Brees, but are they still getting pressure often?

The Falcons had just seven total sacks entering that Week 10 upset, and combined for 11 over the next two weeks. Desmond Trufant’s return has helped in the secondary, but the team we saw play in Sunday’s loss to the Buccaneers looked a lot like the one fans grew accustomed to seeing during those first eight weeks. Atlanta did not record a sack, but did intercept Jameis Winston twice. It wasn’t a complete drop off in terms of pressure, the team just came up short of making plays when they had the chance to.

4. What is the biggest possible difference Saints fans will pick up on in this rematch of the game they saw just a few weeks ago?

Something that may have been overlooked in that Week 10 game was just how well Atlanta’s offensive line played against a very good Saints defense. The Falcons kept things going with another stellar performance up front in Week 11.The Bucs brought them back to earth on Sunday, however, and they could struggle to protect Ryan after getting exposed last week. I expect Sean Payton to have a better game-plan this time, and to attack some of the same areas he saw Bruce Arians, go after in the Falcons secondary.

5. Alright, who’s winning this thing? What is your final score prediction?

This is one of those games that while my head says the Saints will win, my gut tells me the Falcons may get up for this one the way they did three weeks ago when these teams met. I’ll go with my head, though, and say New Orleans wins, 27-23.

Vikings’ cheering guide on Thanksgiving

With the Vikings knocking on the door of the playoffs, there’s pretty much someone to cheer for in every game.

The Minnesota Vikings do not play on Thanksgiving.

However, six other teams do.

With the Vikings at 8-3 and holding onto the sixth spot in the NFC, each game is pretty important for not only the Vikings, but other NFL teams.

Here’s who you should be cheering for during Thanksgiving games when you can’t see straight because you’ve had too much stuffing.

Bears (5-6) at Lions (3-7-1), 11:30 a.m. CT

The Bears are barely hanging onto playoff hopes. Per FiveThirtyEight, they have just a two-percent chance to make it. If they were to lose to the Lions (who could be without Matthew Stafford and Jeff Driskel), that would drop to less than one percent.

In David Blough we trust.

Bills (8-3) at Cowboys (6-5)

The Cowboys hold a one-game lead in the NFC East to the 5-6 Eagles. Apparently, neither of these teams want to win.

No matter who wins the NFC East will have a higher seed than the Vikings if Minnesota doesn’t win the division.

The Vikings have the tie breaker over both the Cowboys and Eagles.

The more losses to NFC teams, the better.

Let’s go Frank Gore!

Saints (9-2) at Falcons (3-8)

The Vikings are still very much alive for a first-round bye – they just need some help.

If the Falcons were somehow able to upset the Saints, the Vikings odds to get a first-round bye would jump from 29 to 39 percent.

It’s OK to do the Dirty Bird Dance during this one!

Watch: Former Vol Alvin Kamara wanted to prove he belonged in SEC

Former Vol Alvin Kamara is in his third season in the National Football League with the New Orleans Saints.

Kamara played at Norcross High School in Georgia and then went to Alabama in beginning his collegiate career.

Kamara redshirted as a true freshman in 2013 at Alabama and transferred to Hutchinson Community College in Kansas.

After one season at Hutchinson Community College, Kamara spent two seasons at Tennessee and became a fan favorite before being drafted by the New Orleans Saints.

Below is an interview with the former Vol from the Campus Lore video vault discussing transferring to Tennessee.

Falcons WR Russell Gage named fantasy sleeper for Week 13

Russell Gage recorded just six catches for 63 yards as a rookie but topped both totals in Sunday’s game, finishing with eight catches for 76 yards.

After trading Mohamed Sanu to the Patriots, the Falcons needed to find someone on offense to fill his role as the team’s slot receiver.

Tight end Austin Hooper, who’s having a breakout season, injured his knee a few weeks ago. This has opened the door for second-year WR Russell Gage, Atlanta’s sixth-round pick from the 2018 draft. Gage recorded just six catches for 63 yards as a rookie. In Sunday’s loss to the Bucs, he finished with a career-high eight catches for 76 yards.

Gage has 21 catches over the past four games. With the Falcons extremely dinged up at tight end, defenses aren’t going to take their eyes off of Calvin Ridley or Julio Jones.

That means Gage will have a chance to develop a role in this offense over the final five weeks of the season. The fantasy football world has noticed, too. In Pat Yasinskas of TD Wire’s 9 fantasy sleepers for Week 13 feature, Gage was the first player mentioned:

Gage could be a good player to start in the Thanksgiving night game with the Saints. He gradually has taken on a bigger role in the offense because so much defensive attention goes to Julio Jones and Calvin Ridley. Gage had eight catches for 76 yards in Sunday’s loss to Tampa Bay. He should play a bigger role going forward.

Fantasy players are weary of getting burned by this Atlanta offense. Brian Hill failed to live up to his sleeper status two weeks ago, then Matt Ryan struggled against the Buccaneers’ 32nd-ranked scoring defense in Week 12.

Gage’s production was anticipated after the team traded Sanu, though, and we know Ryan likes to spread the ball around.

There’s no reason he shouldn’t continue to get around five catches per game and improve on his yardage totals. Don’t surprised if Gage has another career game on Thanksgiving night against the Saints.

Panthers work out four kickers after Joey Slye’s rough day vs. Saints

Carolina Panthers kicker Joey Slye had a bad day against the New Orleans Saints, causing Carolina to try out free agents like Kai Forbath.

[jwplayer jcPYpmHE]

The New Orleans Saints defeated the Carolina Panthers after some spotty kicking from Panthers specialist Joey Slye last Sunday, and the team is taking steps to find a better answer at the position, according to a report from Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle. Slye missed two extra point tries and a 28-yard field goal against the Saints in a game Carolina lost 34-31, dropping them to 5-6 on the season.

Ironically, Carolina’s free agent tryouts included former Saints kicker Kai Forbath, who appeared in 10 games for New Orleans back in 2015. Forbath went 9-for-13 on field goal tries and 33-for-34 on extra point attempts that season before stints with the Minnesota Vikings and Jacksonville Jaguars.

Other kickers who worked out for Carolina per Wilson’s report were Elliott Fry (66-of-88 on field goals in 51 games at South Carolina, but no extensive NFL experience), Greg Joseph (17-of-20 in 14 games with the Cleveland Browns last year), and Nick Rose (11-of-14 in 10 games for two teams from 2017 to 2018).

The Panthers haven’t made any moves yet beyond adding Joseph to their practice squad, but the Saints will see whoever gets the starting nod next when they fly out to Charlotte in the regular season finale on Dec. 29.

NFL playoff picture: Saints can clinch NFC South, postseason berth

The New Orleans Saints can claim their place in the NFL playoff picture with a win over the Atlanta Falcons, which would win the NFC South.

[jwplayer jcPYpmHE]

There’s going to be a lot on the line when the New Orleans Saints visit the Atlanta Falcons on Thursday Night Football. With a win, the Saints can clinch their third straight NFC South crown; with a loss, it will take some help for them to exit Week 13 with a division title, but it’s still possible.

Beyond bragging rights, winning the NFC South gives the Saints a guaranteed spot in the playoffs. They’re the only team that can earn its place in the postseason tournament with a win this week, though the San Francisco 49ers and New England Patriots can each punch their ticket if a few other things go their way.

Here are the possible playoff scenarios the NFL confirmed Tuesday:

How the Saints can clinch the NFC South

Simply beating the Falcons on Thanksgiving night will be enough for New Orleans. But if they come up short, a loss or tie by the Carolina Panthers (who play the Washington Redskins on Sunday) would allow the Saints to back into a division win.

How the 49ers can clinch a playoff berth

Things are more complicated for San Francisco. They’re one of the two hottest teams in the NFL right now, and they have to compete with the other candidate (the Baltimore Ravens) on the road on Sunday. If the 49ers beat or tie with Lamar Jackson, Mark Ingram, and the Ravens they’ll have to check into the Los Angeles Rams’ road game with the Arizona Cardinals. If San Francisco wins or ties, it’ll take a Rams tie or loss to get them into the playoffs this week.

How the Patriots can clinch the playoff berth

Meanwhile in the AFC, New England has to bag a road win against this week’s opponent: Deshaun Watson and the cornered Houston Texans. If they can do that, all eyes turn to the Pittsburgh Steelers (who are hosting the Cleveland Browns), Oakland Raiders (visiting the Kansas City Chiefs), and Indianapolis Colts (versus the Tennessee Titans). If either of those two first two teams lose and the Patriots win, New England clinches a playoff berth.

However, if the Patriots tie with the Texans, it’ll take one of several different combinations to punch their ticket. It’s complicated, so we’ve broken each scenario down below:

  • Raiders loss and Steelers loss
  • Raiders loss and Colts loss
  • Steelers loss and Colts loss

So those are somewhat long odds. As long as the Saints can handle their business against Atlanta on Thursday, they and their fans can spend the long holiday weekend kicked back and relaxed, watching lesser teams fight and scrap their way into the postseason.

Saints favored by almost a touchdown over Falcons on Thanksgiving

The opening Week 13 NFL odds favor the visiting New Orleans Saints over the hosting Atlanta Falcons on Thanksgiving, but that means little.

[jwplayer jcPYpmHE]

The New Orleans Saints are headlining the NFL’s scheduled games for Thanksgiving with a rematch against the NFC South-rival Atlanta Falcons in prime-time, at 7:20 p.m. CT on NBC. That tense matchup follows earlier games hosted by the Detroit Lions (against the Chicago Bears at 11:30 a.m. CT) and Dallas Cowboys (with the Buffalo Bills at 3:30 p.m. CT). And according to the opening line from BetMGM, the Saints-Falcons kickoff is expected to be the day’s barn-burner, with the highest over/under of the day.

The Saints-Falcons game has a projected over/under of 49.5, with New Orleans favored by 6.5 points — nearly a full touchdown. That’s higher than what the Cowboys-Bills game is expected to put up (44.5) as well as what the Lions-Bears tilt (39.5). That over/under also projects a final score of Saints 29, Falcons 21.

Saints fans learned that the projected odds mean little the last time these two teams squared off. The Saints were 11.5-point favorites over the Falcons coming out of their bye week, but Atlanta shocked the Saints by sacking Drew Brees six times and holding the New Orleans offense without a touchdown on the day. The Saints have had time to improve since then, but this will obviously be a big test no matter what each team’s record looks like.

Marshon Lattimore practices, but Julio Jones rests on Saints-Falcons injury report

New Orleans Saints CB Marshon Lattimore returned to practice, but Atlanta Falcons WR Julio Jones was missing on the injury report.

[jwplayer jcPYpmHE]

The New Orleans Saints and Atlanta Falcons practiced on Tuesday, releasing updated injury reports after their initial estimations earlier this week. With such a quick turnaround between their last game on Sunday and their upcoming Thanksgiving prime-time kickoff on Thursday night, both teams opted to rest on Monday before getting back to work on the practice field.

That meant a return for star Saints cornerback Marshon Lattimore, who missed the last two games with a hamstring injury. Lattimore practiced on a limited basis on Tuesday. If he plays against Atlanta, it will have been 18 days since Lattimore last suited up, having left the first matchup with the Falcons on Nov. 10 after straining his hamstring. The Saints lost that game 26-9, so getting him back would do a lot to help a defense that’s been inconsistent in his absence.

Curiously, the Falcons have rested standout wide receiver Julio Jones (shoulder) for two of their three practice days before Thursday night’s game. His stats deserves attention moving forward, because it almost goes without saying that his absence would be massive for Atlanta if he can’t play this week.

Updated practice participation and injury status are noted in bold text. Here’s what we learned after the Saints and Falcons took the field on Tuesday:

From the Saints

  • G Andrus Peat (forearm), Did not participate
  • FB Zach Line (knee), Did not participate
  • T Terron Armstead (ankle), Did not participate
  • G Will Clapp (back), Limited
  • CB Marshon Lattimore (hamstring), Limited

NFL Week 13: How to survive and advance in your knockout pool

What teams look like smart plays in Week 13 of the NFL season in your knockout pool?

Triskaidekaphobia:

tris-kahy-dek-uhfoh-bee-uh: fear or a phobia concerning the number 13.
Can’t blame anyone who has a case of it this week if you are alive in your knockout pool. Week 13 brings us three games on Thanksgiving and the rest on the usual Sunday slate with Monday featuring Minnesota at Seattle in a sharp matchup. Beware the trap of Week 13!

Don’t think about it

Mike DiNovo-USA TODAY Sports

Mitchell Trubisky vs. Jeff Driskel will give you indigestion before you sit down for your Thanksgiving meal. Try and watch the Bears at Lions and realize how much quarterbacking means in the NFL. On the other end of the QB spectrum is MVP front-runner Lamar Jackson and the Baltimore Ravens playing host to Jimmy Garoppolo and the San Francisco 49ers. This matchup is splendid and deserves total focus and no thought of using either team. The Titans and the Colts are an AFC South tussle that figures to be tight and neither team is predictable enough to bank on. The Browns visit the Steelers. The teams have to be on their best behavior. Yes, Cleveland is on a roll but expect Pittsburgh to be fired up after the way the first meeting ended. Way to risky. The same goes for the Buccaneers at the Jaguars. The only certainties here are Jameis Winston will throw for 300 yards and multiple interceptions. The Patriots and Texans hook up in a Sunday night battle in Texas. New England is 10-1 and in the midst of a brutal stretch of their schedule. All that means is Bill Belichick will have the Pats primed and there is no guarantee Deshaun Watson will solve that incredible defense. The Vikings head to Seattle for a Monday night battle that should be watched and not played in a knockout pool.
