Why San Diego State Will Win

San Diego State is back to being the San Diego State we were all expecting … sort of.

At least in terms of mojo, it’s back.

It’s still not quite good enough running the ball, and it’s still not dominating enough defensively, but no one saw the passing game coming after Jalen Mayden took over and started winging it around.

Against New Mexico, all San Diego State has to do is score just a little bit. The pass defense won’t have any issues, and the run defense that hasn’t allowed more than 150 yards in the last five games should hold up, and the offense will get to at least 14 points.

New Mexico State hasn’t scored more than ten points over the last four games and hasn’t scored more than 20 in the last seven.

It’s not like San Diego State will come out and hang 43 on the board.

Okay, maybe it will – it did that last week against San Jose State – but the New Mexico defense has been able to hold up reasonably well considering there’s no help coming from the other side.

It’s going to need San Diego State to melt down, and that’s not exactly asking for the world. The team has an occasional penalty problem, and it will give the ball away from time to time, but it won’t be enough.

It’s been a wee bit of a struggle for the Lobos – to be nice about it – but there aren’t a whole lot of mistakes, the pass defense hasn’t been totally roasted, and there are just enough parts in the backfield to at least give the ground game a try.

However, to have any chance they need QB Terry Wilson to hot right away with the short passing game.

After struggling for a few games he wasn’t bad against Air Force, but he has to regain the form of the first few games when he was sharp, accurate, and did a nice job of driving the ball down the field.

The defense isn’t going to give up a whole lot of anything on the ground.

Again, New Mexico at least has to give it a shot. The O line hasn’t generated enough of a push, but there has to be an attempt to control the tempo of the game early on. Even so, it’s not going to go anywhere.

The Aztecs are stuffing everyone, halting Arizona to just 51 yards on the ground, Utah to 70, and overall it’s No. 2 in the nation against the run behind Wisconsin.

On the other side, the ground attack has been consistent with 200 yards or more in every game, averaging over five yards per carry.

The Aztecs are going to own the lines, the clock, and the game from the start.

They’ll go on two early scoring drives and New Mexico won’t have enough of a passing game to get any momentum.

This is one of the few teams in the country that can shoot well enough to screw up the Aztecs.

New Mexico can’t guard worth a lick, and that includes San Diego State a few weeks ago in Albuquerque. It was an ugly 85-57 Lobo loss with with the Aztecs hitting everything from three, stepping up its defense against the high-powered offense, and winning in a breeze.

No one can keep up when SDSU gets going early. It puts games away, then relies on the defense to force turnover after turnover while stopping everything from the outside.

New Mexico can score, but it’s just not sharp enough to keep up for a full 40 minutes.
