What will the Celtics do with the team’s open roster spot?

What should the Celtics do with the team’s open roster spot?

At the time of this writing, the Boston Celtics still have an open roster spot, and could look to add a player ahead of the playoffs. This could mean signing a free agent or elevating one of the team’s current two-way contracts to a full-time deal, which would make said player eligible for the postseason. One such player is Neemias Queta.

This big man has split time between Boston and Portland, suiting up for the G-League affiliate Maine Celtics. He’s appeared in 26 games NBA games and has been an added boost for head coach Joe Mazzulla’s front court depth. Likewise, the Celtics front office could look to add a free agent player, with familiar faces like Blake Griffin proving a popular suggestion among fans and media.

In a panel discussion with a number of Celtics reporters, the “How Bout Them Celtics!” podcast discussed Boston’s open roster spot in a new segment called Celts of the Roundtable. Enjoy, via YouTube.

Neemias Queta shares there’s been no suggestion of signing him to the open roster spot

Queta has just a few remaining games of eligibility.

Fans of the Boston Celtics were smitten when they landed Portuguese big man Neemias Queta as a two way player at the start of the 2023-24 NBA season. And for good reason, given how impactful the 7-footer can be on the basketball court. Now, at the end of the Celtics’ 2023-24 campaign, Queta has just a few remaining games of eligibility.

They also happen to have an open regular roster spot should they want to keep the Utah State alum around in future seasons. Especially given how they will need low-cost depth as their roster grows in expense over the next few seasons. CLNS Media reporter Bobby Manning caught up with Queta about his season with Boston and the potentiality of nabbing that open roster spot.

Neemias Queta gives an update on Jordan Walsh’s progress with the Maine Celtics

“It shows – you can tell the improvement he’s made,” said Queta.

Boston Celtics two way big man Neemias Queta has had the privilege of watching rookie Celtics wing Jordan Walsh grow as a player with the Maine Celtics this season. Speaking to Celtics Blog’s Noa Dalzell, Queta gave an update on Walsh with the Portland version of the Celtics at the G League level. “It’s been a good situation,” he explained.

“I feel like Jordan’s been doing a great job for us, whether down in Maine or in Boston,” added Queta. “We had a similar path, going through from our first year getting drafted and being in the G League right away.”

“I feel like he’s doing it and doing a great job being down there with a great attitude and trying to get better every single day.”

“It shows – you can tell the improvement he’s made,” said the Portuguese big man of Walsh’s growth in Portland this season.

“He’s shooting the ball at a high level right now, so we just want him to keep on getting better and learn from his mistakes, and keep on being confident because we know how good he can be.”

How the Boston Celtics bench players are making an impact

A case can be made for a minor addition or two via the trade market or perhaps a buyout guy, but a general consensus seems to be building that Boston’s bench needs very little.

The Boston Celtics might not have the most intimidating bench rotation in the NBA when it comes to their offensive output, but then they don’t need to light the world on fire scoring. With arguably the best starting five in the league and a decent supply of offensive firepower already on the bench, the Celtics’ reserves are exactly what this ball club needs to win.

A case can be made for a minor addition or two via the trade market or perhaps a buyout guy, but a general consensus seems to be building that Boston’s bench needs very little if anything.

To take stock of the Stay Ready Crew — as the Celtics’ bench mob has come to be known — NBC Sports Boston’s Chris Forsberg broke down how Payton Pritchard, Neemias Queta, Luke Kornet and Sam Hauser are making a difference this season.

Celtics Lab 238: A deep dive into the deep rotation’s Stay Ready Crew with Noa Dalzell

Which players matter most to the team’s title aspirations? Which might be on the move ahead of the 2024 NBA trade deadline? What talent does Boston have in the pipeline in Maine? And who will see the floor in the postseason?

The Boston Celtics have by most accounts the best top six players in the entire NBA to match their league-best regular season record. So, it can be easy to forget about the rest of the team. The so-called “Stay Ready Crew” mostly does just that — keep themselves in the right frame of mind and state of health in case their number is called.

And those numbers do get called, with players like Oshae Brissett and Lamar Stevens bringing energy and matchup-dependent options that have sparked wins for Boston, while the sharpshooting duo of Payton Pritchard and Sam Hauser wreak havoc on opposing defenses. And if it were not for the likes of Luke Kornet and Neemias Queta defying expectations as reserve big men, you can be sure there would be less wins to the Celtics’ name this season.

Which players matter most to the team’s title aspirations? Which might be on the move ahead of the 2024 NBA trade deadline? What talent does Boston have in the pipeline in Maine? And who will see the floor in the postseason?

To answer all of these key questions not quite getting the attention they deserve, the hosts of the CLNS Media “Celtics Lab” podcast linked up with Celtics Blog’s Noa Dalzell.

The self-proclaimed Boston bench beat reporter who has a bead on a certain crew that stays ready, join us in a deep dive into the Celtics’ reserves. (Apologies for variable audio, wifi issues made for a few bumps).

Celtics two way big man Neemias Queta on making history for Portugal, playing with Danny Ainge’s son

What else does this mysterious man in Boston’s frontcourt have to reveal?

Fans of the Boston Celtics know the team got lucky landing two way big man Neemias Queta after the Sacramento Kings oddly cut the Utah State big man. Savvier fans know he hails from Portugal, and is the first-ever player in the league from that country.

The savviest Celtics fans also know that not only did Queta elect to pursue a sport few in his home country play, but he chose to do it for a team in the US that also had former Celtics president Danny Ainge’s son Crew on it with the Utah State Aggies. What else does this mysterious man in Boston’s frontcourt have to reveal?

Queta was the subject of the most recent episode of the team-produced “View From the Rafters” podcast, an honor not usually afforded to two way players.

But then Queta is far from your usual two way prospect, having already shown he is worthy of a full deal and then some. Check it out above!

Neemias Queta is ready for a bigger role with the Boston Celtics – and it shows

“With time, the game’s just been slowing down for me, and I’m getting more comfortable on the court,” said Queta.

Boston Celtics two way big man Neemias Queta has done about as much as anyone could have expected of him with the Celtics this season, already having far exceeded most expectations of how much the Portuguese center might help Boston’s contending roster while splitting his time with the Maine Celtics.

“This is what I’ve been pretty much waiting on,” shared Queta via the Boston Globe’s Gary Washburn of his growing opportunities with the team. “Being ready for these type of moments. I had two years to do that. And whenever it is my turn, just be ready and everything works itself out.”

“With time, the game’s just been slowing down for me, and I’m getting more comfortable on the court,” he added, music to the ears of Boston fans everywhere.

And while the Celtics would prefer him to get more capable defending in space — and he has been — his roots fighting for possessions in the paint remain his NBA motor.

“I feel like (that) is what brought me to the league, so I have to keep emphasizing being one of those players that does the dirty work,” he offered on his presence near the cup. “That’s definitely something I have in my game.”
