Kirk Herbstreit wanted Nebraska signee Dylan Raiola to flip from Georgia

Kirk Herbstreit encouraged Dylan Raiola’s flip from UGA to Nebraska

Five-star quarterback Dylan Raiola made perhaps the biggest splash of the 2024 recruiting cycle when he flipped his commitment to Nebraska ahead of the early signing period. The No. 2 quarterback in the country, per 247Sports, had been committed to Georgia football for nearly seven months before changing his mind.

More information surfaced regarding Raiola’s decision on Wednesday, which also happens to be national signing day. Dylan’s father, Dominic Raiola, shared a story with Rivals about receiving a call from ESPN college football analyst Kirk Herbstreit after a flip to Nebraska began to gain traction.

“I’ll bring up one guys name, his name is Kirk Herbstreit. When he saw the smoke about Dylan entertaining Nebraska, he was like call me, he was like ‘Dude if this is true, he’s gotta do it.’ His affinity for Nebraska, for a guy like that to tell me and get behind me, you know I knew he needed to do it, but I wasn’t going to sit here and say you need to go change that place or be a part of the change of that place. So when Kirk told me that, you know I was like man, I had other coaches reach and say the place is special and coach Rhule is a special leader.”

It’s unlikely that Herbstreit’s call caused Raiola to make the flip. Dominic Raiola was a two-time All-Big 12 selection at center for the Cornhuskers, while his brother, Donovan Raiola, coaches the offensive line on Matt Rhule’s staff.

What’s confusing about this new information is Herbstreit’s affinity with Nebraska, which was enough to prompt him to call Dominic Railoa. Herbstreit is a Ohio State alumnus and covers college football at the national level. We don’t often hear of a personality like Herbstreit singling out a recruit, or encouraging a player to sign with a different school than he’s committed to.

Wisconsin basketball slides in latest KenPom ranking

It was a rough week for Wisconsin basketball

Wisconsin is fresh off a forgettable week, arguably the worst of its 2023-24 season thus far. The Badgers first squandered a 19-point lead on the road at Nebraska on Thursday, before returning home and narrowly losing to No. 2 Purdue.

The losses drop the Badgers (16-6, 8-3 Big Ten) into a tie for second with Illinois, 1 1/2 games behind first-place Purdue.

The performances also had the Badgers slide in KenPom’s rankings. The team moved from No. 11 to No. 13 and now has the No. 9 offense and No. 33 defense.

Greg Gard’s team remains the third-highest-ranked team in the Big Ten, but is now further behind Illinois at No. 10 and Purdue at No. 2.

The season is far from over, especially with another matchup with Purdue in early March. But Wisconsin must return to its winning ways starting Wednesday at Michigan if it wants to keep pace in the Big Ten.

The Huskers remained home following their win against Purdue to face Rutgers on Saturday afternoon. Though Nebraska put up a fight with the Scarlet Knights, Rutgers squeaked out the win.

The Scarlet Knights won the battle through their shooting efficiency, going 28-of-47 while Nebraska completed 23-of-68. The Huskers remained in the battle through trips to the free-throw line (17) and points off turnovers (25).  But Rutgers’ third-quarter surge put Nebraska down 60-49, forcing the Huskers to climb out of the hole in the fourth.

Alexis Markowski and Jaz Shelley finished the game as Nebraska’s top scorers. The duo dropped double-digit points for the Huskers, with Markowski scoring 13 and Shelley landing 11.

Freshmen Jessica Petrie and Logan Nissley each put together a solid game for Nebraska, with Petrie scoring nine points and Nissley dropping eight.

Nebraska’s Eleanor Dale signs with Everton Women FC

A former Husker is now a part of a professional football club in her home country. Everton Women FC, a club in Liverpool, England, announced that former Nebraska soccer player Eleanor Dale signed with the team.

Everton is a part of the Women’s Super League, the top division of English women’s football. Dale, a native of Billingham, England, joins the Blues following a historic season to conclude her collegiate career at Nebraska. Dale led the nation in goals with 28 on the season and ranked third in Big Ten history in single-season goals.

She also helped the Huskers reach their third Elite Eight appearance in program history. With her total goals, she also broke the school record for goals in a season, which was held by Kim Engesser, who set the record with 27 goals in 1998.

Dale broke the record in Nebraska’s 4-0 victory against UC-Irvine in the Sweet Sixteen to end her career with 44 goals, the sixth-best in school history.

Huskers complete major comeback in overtime victory over No. 6 Wisconsin

Nebraska men’s basketball had an uphill battle on Thursday night, returning home after a road loss to face No. 6 Wisconsin in Lincoln.

Nebraska men’s basketball had an uphill battle on Thursday night, returning home after a road loss to face No. 6 Wisconsin in Lincoln. The Huskers found themselves in trouble in the first half, down 43-27. But Nebraska exited the locker rooms on fire, erasing the deficit before upsetting Wisconsin 80-72 in overtime.

The Huskers outscored the Badgers 40-24 in the second half, nearly ending it in regulation before Wisconsin secured a layup to force overtime. Nebraska pulled away in the end, achieving its second top-10 upset this season. A key stat of the game came at the free throw line, where the Huskers landed 19-of-26 while Wisconsin only shot 8-of-12.

C.J. Wilcher led Nebraska in scoring after dropping only six points in the first half. Wilcher helped the Huskers roar back in the second half and overtime, finishing the game with a career-high 22 points. Wilcher’s scoring came primarily from beyond the arc, landing five of seven shots.

Rienk Mast finished behind Wilcher in scoring, landing 20 points on the night for Nebraska. Brice Williams rounded out the Huskers’ double-digit scorers, tallying up 17 points. Williams also led the team in rebounds with nine and free throws with eight.

Nebraska moves to 16-6 on the season, matching its win total from last year with nine regular-season games remaining. The Huskers will hit the road to play Illinois on Sunday night. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m. and can be viewed on the Big Ten Network.

Wisconsin chokes away a 19-point lead in overtime loss to Nebraska

Wisconsin blows another big lead at Nebraska…

Wisconsin basketball gave a sense of deja vu tonight. The No. 6 Badgers squandered a 19-point lead to eventually fall 80-72 in overtime to the Nebraska Cornhuskers. The road collapse in Lincoln comes nearly a year to the day after the team relinquished a 17-point second-half lead in the same building (February 11, 2023).

Wisconsin drops to 16-5 (8-2 Big Ten) with the loss, falling to 0.5 games behind Purdue for first place in the conference.

The Badgers led 43-27 at halftime, though came out of the break making just one of their first eight three-point attempts. A late flurry from Max Klesmit halted Nebraska’s momentum for a minute, but C.J. Wilcher’s 22 points on 5/7 from three and a couple of Rienk Mast threes proved to be too much. The result is the Badgers’ first loss since 2000 in which they led by 15+ at halftime.

Credit Nebraska’s hot shooting or credit the Cornhuskers’ weird magic inside their building this year (the team is now 14-1 overall and 6-0 in conference play at home). But Wisconsin also has themselves to blame for this one, as the team finished with 16 turnovers.

Greg Gard’s team now must regroup quickly as No. 2 Purdue visits Madison on Sunday afternoon.

The Huskers battled it out with Purdue throughout the first half and entered the locker rooms up 32-29. However, Nebraska took off in third quarter, outscoring the Boilermakers 22-14 to enter the fourth up 54-43.

The Huskers move to 14-7 on the season and 6-4 in conference play. They will remain home to host Rutgers on Saturday afternoon. Tipoff is set 2 p.m. and can be viewed on B1G+ and Nebraska Public Media.
