The Nebraska softball team entered the second game of its series against Northwestern on Saturday. The Huskers and the Wildcats originally entered Saturday with a doubleheader set, but the second game got pushed back due to weather. The first game resulted in an 8-1 defeat for Nebraska.

The Huskers and Northwestern played scoreless for the first couple of innings. The Wildcats took a 2-0 lead over the Huskers in the third and scored six runs in the final two innings to take the win.

Northwestern finished the game with nine hits and eight RBIs, while Nebraska delivered five hits for one RBI. The Huskers also left seven runners on baseball, including five in scoring position.

Emmerson Cope delivered Nebraska’s lone run, a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth. Ava Bredwell led Nebraska in hits, going 2-for-4, the only Husker with multiple hits in the loss.

Nebraska fell to 27-21 on the season and 10-8 in conference play. The Huskers will conclude their final game against Northwestern on Sunday morning. Nebraska currently leads 5-0 over the Wildcats in the top of the fourth and will resume play at 11:00 a.m. with the game broadcasting on B1G+.

Nebraska softball falls short to first place Northwestern 6-5

The Huskers commenced their final home series of the season against first-place Northwestern Friday night. Nebraska battled Northwestern throughout the night, but the Wildcats ultimately got the edge over the Huskers.

Northwestern and Nebraska entered the seventh deadlocked 4-4 after Northwestern took a 4-2 lead. But a sacrificial fly and a wild pitch pushed the Wildcats to a 6-4 lead. The Huskers attempted a comeback, which consisted of a solo home run by Emmerson Cope to cut the lead down 6-5 but could not manage another run.

Nebraska finished with eight hits while Northwestern delivered six, but the Huskers brought in just one of seven runners in scoring position. The Wildcats finished with four RBIs off two sacrificial flies, a solo home run, and a single. Northwestern earned its other two runs off the aforementioned wild pitch and a fielding error.

Samantha Bland started the game with a two-run home run in the first to put Nebraska up 2-0. Katelyn Caneda then hit a two-RBI single in the sixth to tie the game 4-4. The duo led the Huskers in RBIs.

Women’s basketball dominates Northwestern in 75-50 win

The Huskers hosted Northwestern Tuesday night for their second to last home game of the season.

The Huskers hosted Northwestern Tuesday night for their second to last home game of the season. Nebraska dominated the Wildcats throughout, resulting in a massive 75-50 win.

The Huskers controlled the game from the start, blowing past the Wildcats and ending the first quarter up 20-6. Nebraska continued its surge until the end.

Freshman Natalie Potts finished the night as Nebraska’s top scorer, dropping 18 points. She also hauled in 10 rebounds to make it her fourth double-double of the season and led the team in steals with three.

Annika Stewart finished second in scoring for the Huskers, tallying up 13 points in the win. Freshman Logan Nissley dropped 12 points and led Nebraska in assists with six.

Alexis Markowski delivered 12 points for Nebraska while also earning ten rebounds for her 15th double-double of the season. Markowski is now second in school history for career double-doubles with 37 and tied her career-high for double-doubles in a season.

Nebraska improves to 18-9 on the season and 10-6 in conference play. They will remain home to play Minnesota on Saturday for Senior Night. Tipoff is set for 4:00 p.m. and can be viewed on B1G+.

The road woes continued for Nebraska as it faced off against Northwestern Wednesday night. The Huskers fell behind early once again and couldn’t dig out their hole, resulting in an 80-68 loss.

Points off turnovers and three-pointers were Nebraska’s main burdens throughout the game. Northwestern finished the night with 26 points off turnovers and landed 11 shots from beyond the arc. The Huskers, meanwhile, only put up seven points off turnovers and delivered just six baskets from three-point range.

Nebraska overall saw four players score double-digit points. Juwan Gary led the charge for the Huskers, tallying up 15 points. Brice Williams led the team in rebounds with 10, accompanying his total of 13 points scored to earn his first double-double of the season. Jamarques Lawrence scored 12 points, and Keisei Tominaga rounded the squad with 11 points.

Nebraska falls to 16-8 on the season and 6-7 in conference play. It will return home Saturday to take on Michigan. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m. and can be viewed on the Big Ten Network.

The Huskers entered Saturday afternoon’s game against Northwestern on a two-game losing streak. Nebraska snapped the streak in a tight battle with the Wildcats, closing out the game on top 75-69.

The Huskers also honored nearly 65 former players and basketball staff, including the 1993-94 Big Eight Tournament title team and former head coach Danny Nee.

Nebraska outshot the Wildcats overall, landing two more baskets in 16 fewer attempts to finish with a field goal percentage of 55%. The Huskers also outrebounded Northwestern 40-26, another key factor in Nebraska’s win. However, the Wildcats stayed in the game from points off turnovers, tallying up 17.

But unlike their loss to Rutgers, the Huskers pulled away in the end. Nebraska finished the game with five players in double-digits for scoring. Josiah Allick led the Huskers’ in scoring, landing a season-high 15 points in the win. Allick also led Nebraska in shots made at the free throw line, going seven-of-eight.

Keisei Tominaga finished right behind Allick in scoring, delivering 14 points by going five-of-11 in total shooting. Brice Williams scored 12 points in the win, while Jamarques Lawrence and C.J. Wilcher finished with ten a piece.

The Huskers move to 14-5 on the season and 4-4 in conference play. Nebraska will remain home for its next game against Ohio State on Tuesday night. Tipoff is set for 6:00 p.m. and can be viewed on Peacock.

The No. 1 ranked Huskers began their first of three of their final home matches of the season on Wednesday night. Nebraska began the stretch by hosting Northwestern and defeating them in a four-set bout (28-26, 24-26, 25-11, 25-20).

The Huskers and Wildcats split the first two sets of the match in an aggressive fashion, taking them both past 25 points. Nebraska took control of the match in the third set, decimating Northwestern 25-11, before taking set four 25-20.

The Wildcats finished ahead of the Huskers in total attacks, attempting 140 over Nebraska’s 126. But Northwestern only delivered 50 kills while the Huskers racked up 56. Merritt Beason and freshman Harper Murray acted as the main driving force for Nebraska. The duo combined for 26 kills off 73 attacks, 17 digs and seven blocks.

Bekka Allick and Ally Batenhorst also finished with double-digit kills in the win. Allick went 11-of-16 and led the team in blocks with seven. Batenhorst delivered ten kills for Nebraska off 21 attacks. Freshman Andi Jackson also had a notable performance, tallying up eight kills from 10 attacks and completing six blocks. Freshman Bergen Reilly led the Huskers in assists and digs, racking up 45 and 12, respectively.

Nebraska is now 24-0, its best start to a season since 2005. The team continues their home stand on Sunday, where they’ll welcome in Illinois. The match is set for 2:00 p.m. and can be viewed on Nebraska Public Media and B1G+.

The 100th anniversary of Memorial Stadium saw a wild showdown. In the first few minutes of the game, Nebraska found itself in a disastrous position against Northwestern. The Huskers’ two first drives resulted in two straight interceptions, giving the Wildcats prime field position. But Nebraska stepped up and fended off Northwestern when it counted, resulting in a 17-9 2023 win.

Heinrich Haarberg stumbled out of the gate with the two interceptions. But he went the rest of the game without any costly errors. Haarberg threw eight completions off 17 passes for 85 yards and a touchdown. On the ground, he ran for 72 yards and a touchdown off 16 rushes. Emmett Johnson led the Huskers in rushing yards in the win, going for 73 yards off 12 carries.

Though Northwestern finished with more total offensive yards than Nebraska, the Huskers’ defense kept the Wildcats to just nine points. The Blackshirts brought the pressure, delivering eight total sacks in the game.

But the Huskers also struggled to put points on the board. However, each time Nebraska scored, it was big. Haarberg’s rushing touchdown handed the Huskers the lead and his 44-yard touchdown pass to Malachi Coleman extended that lead to 17-6.

With the win, Nebraska moves to 4-3. The last time the Huskers got to four wins before the last game of the season was in 2019, when they defeated Northwestern 13-10 to move to 4-2. Nebraska will remain at home next Saturday against Purdue. Kickoff is set for 2:30 p.m. and can be viewed on FS1.

The Huskers hit the road for a Wednesday night matchup with Northwestern. Nebraska dominated the match (25-15, 25-16, 25-21), earning its 11th sweep and 18th straight win of the season.

On offense, the Huskers served nine aces, along with 45 kills off 86 attacks for a season-high hitting percentage of .395. This overshadowed Northwestern, as it finished with 26 kills off 85 attacks.

Merritt Beason and freshman Harper Murray both finished with double-digit kills for Nebraska, combining for 23 off 48 attacks. Beason also finished with seven digs, three blocks, two set assists and a service ace. Murray delivered four digs and a season-high four service aces.

Bekka Allick and freshman Andi Jackson each performed tremendously, combining for 16 kills off 19 attacks. Both just missed a perfect attack percentage in the win, with Allick going nine-of-10 and Jackson going seven-of-nine.

Freshman Bergen Reilly and Lexi Rodriguez rounded out the team’s performance. Reilly finished the match with 38 assists, along with six digs and two service aces. Rodriguez snatched nine digs, two service aces and a set assist.

Nebraska is now 18-0 on the season and will return home to take on No. 1 Wisconsin on Saturday night. The match is set for 7 p.m. and can be viewed on Big Ten Network.

Nebraska Quarterback Casey Thompson met with the media earlier this week to talk about Nebraska’s loss in Ireland, the lack of a bye week after an international game, the need to get the run game started, and his feelings heading into his first game at Memorial Stadium. In his first game for Nebraska, the Texas transfer was 25 of 42 for 355 yards with one TD and two INTs.

Thompson is a refreshing character in the football/media relationship. He has something that most players and almost every coach has an aversion to, and that’s to be open and honest with the media. He doesn’t try to duck questions, and he’s willing to push back if he feels the question being asked is unfair. I’m curious about his comments after the home opener. It’s clear he’s excited for his first game at Memorial Stadium. Let’s hope the experience lives up to his expectations.

Pressure mounting as Frost, Huskers aim to reset

The Huskers are looking to rebound from a Week 0 loss in Dublin.

Where to start? All the hoopla of playing one of the first games of the 2022 FBS season in Ireland, a new starting quarterback, and the possibility of breaking their six-game losing streak ended in more than a heartbreaking loss.

It was a gut-wrenching, punch-in-the-face, rip-your-heart-out, arm-twisting, stepping-on-a-Lego brick, TV remote-throwing defeat that could have easily been avoided.

Scott Frost showed once again that he could not win games that could go either way. Instead of leaving the casino while he was up, he gambled everything that the Huskers had worked for away with an onside kick while leading 28-17 in the third quarter.

Many viewed Northwestern as a winnable game that the Huskers needed to become bowl eligible. One would hope that Frost could lead Nebraska to wins over North Dakota and Georgia Southern in the next two weeks but any misstep there will surely show him the door.

Nebraska takes on Oklahoma in Week 4 and their final six games on the schedule are particularly brutal as a whole with the exception of Illinois.
