Week 1 first look: Penn State at Wisconsin odds and lines; Badgers favored in key conference tussle

Previewing the college football Week 1 matchup between Penn State and Wisconsin, with odds, trends and head-to-head records.

The Penn State Nittany Lions and Wisconsin Badgers will lock horns and match wits in a Week 1 contest at Camp Randall Stadium in Madison, Wisc. The Lions and Badgers will get things started Saturday at noon ET. Below, we look at the Penn State vs. Wisconsin odds and lines; check back for our college football picks and predictions.

Penn State opened the delayed 2020 season with five straight losses before rallying to win its last four games and go 4-5. The Lions ranked third in Big Ten scoring at 29.8 points per game; they ranked sixth in scoring defense (27.7 PPG). The No. 20 team in the USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll brought in Mike Yurcich to take the reins of the offense after he spent last season as offensive coordinator at Texas. Yurcich, returning QB Sean Clifford and company will have their hands full with a Badger defense that held foes under 20 points in 5 of 7 games last season.

Wisconsin is looking to win its sixth straight season opener. The Badgers went 4-3 last fall, holding foes to 17.4 PPG while scoring 25.1 PPG. That latter figure marked the lowest in Paul Chryst‘s six-year tenure at UW. The Badgers are tabbed as the No. 15 team in the preseason coaches’ poll; quality linebacking and defensive backfield play figure to give them an edge in this lid-lifting game against PSU.

Week 1 first look: LSU at UCLA odds and lines: Tigers, Bruins first-ever meeting

Previewing the college football Week 1 matchup between the LSU Tigers and UCLA Bruins, with odds, trends and head-to-head records.

The No. 13 LSU Tigers (0-0) open their season with an SEC-Pac-12 battle at the Rose Bowl against the host UCLA Bruins (1-0) Saturday. Kickoff is scheduled for 8:30 p.m. ET. Below, we look at the LSU vs. UCLA odds and lines; check back for our college football picks and predictions.

LSU’s 2020 campaign was a massive disappointment given the expectations set by head coach Ed Orgeron and the undefeated 2019 title-winning Tigers who’s quarterback, Joe Burrow, won the Heisman Trophy and was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. Last season was the first year LSU didn’t make a bowl game since 1999.

UCLA opened its 2021 season by steamrolling the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors 44-10, covering the spread as 18-point home favorites and the Under cashed on the 68.5-point total. It was UCLA’s ground game that keyed the victory as the Bruins tallied 244 rushing yards and 4 touchdowns. Bruins junior RB Zach Charbonnet had 6 carries for 106 yards and 3 TD himself.

  • O/U: LSU 6-4 | UCLA 4-3

LSU at UCLA head-to-head

This is the first meeting between these two 100-plus-year-old football programs. ESPN ranks UCLA second in terms of returning production and LSU 30th.

Since 2018 (UCLA head coach Chip Kelly’s first year on the job), the Bruins are 1-6 overall and 2-5 ATS with a minus-11.4 margin of victory and minus-8.6 ATS margin in non-conference games. UCLA is led by senior QB Dorian Thompson-Robinson who has been the opening game starter since his freshman season.

Over that same time span, LSU is 11-0 overall and 7-4 ATS vs. non-conference foes, with a plus-27.5 margin of victory and plus-6.3 ATS margin. Former four-star recruit, sophomore QB Max Johnson, is the starter under center after holding that role for LSU’s final six games last season and having a team-best 8 touchdown to 1 interception.

Week 1 first look: Georgia Bulldogs at Clemson Tigers odds and lines, playoff positioning on the line

Previewing the college football Week 1 matchup between Georgia Bulldogs and Clemson Tigers, with odds, trends and head-to-head records.

The No. 5 Georgia Bulldogs and No. 2 Clemson Tigers square off in this year’s Duke’s Mayo Classic at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, N.C. Kickoff is set for Saturday at 7:30 p.m. ET.  Below, we look at Georgia vs. Clemson odds and lines; check back for our college football picks and predictions.

Rankings according to the USA TODAY AFCA Coaches Poll.

The marquee matchup of Week 1 features a pair of top-five teams with legitimate College Football Playoff aspirations in 2021.

The preseason favorite to win the SEC East, Georgia lost two games in 2020 but looked much improved on offense once QB J.T. Daniels took over for the team’s last four games. Daniels will get help from an experienced and talented offensive line with five-star talent at the skill positions, while the defense should be its typical elite self under head coach Kirby Smart.

Clemson made its sixth straight playoff appearance in 2020, losing 49-28 to Ohio State in the semifinals. They lost electric tandem QB Trevor Lawrence and RB Travis Etienne to the NFL, but QB D.J. Uiagalelei looks ready to lead the offense while most starters return on a top-15 defense (327 yards per game) from last season.

Week 1 first look: Alabama at Miami odds and lines, Tide’s title defense begins

Previewing the college football Week 1 matchup between Alabama and Miami, with odds, trends and head-to-head records.

The Alabama Crimson Tide and Miami Hurricanes square off in this year’s Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Ga. Kickoff is set for Saturday at 3:30 p.m. ET.  Below, we look at Alabama at Miami odds and lines; check back for our college football picks and predictions.

Alabama’s national title defense begins with several new faces on both sides of the ball. The Tide lost six first-round picks from last year’s team, including 2020 Heisman Trophy winner WR DeVonta Smith and finalist QB Mac Jones. This will be our first look at their next wave of blue-chip recruits, headlined by QB Bryce Young.

Miami is coming off an 8-3 (7-2 ACC) season in 2020. Its best hope in this one hinges on star QB D’Eriq King, though it remains to be seen how King will look coming off a major knee injury in the team’s bowl game last season.

Alabama at Miami head-to-head

Nobody on the field was born when these two last played in the 1993 Sugar Bowl (remember George Teague?), so head-to-head doesn’t matter here.

What does matter is Nick Saban’s recent track record in marquee openers. Alabama covered their last five neutral-site opening games dating back to 2015. The on-field turnover, particularly on offense, should be of little worry for a program that reloads nearly every season.

Miami started strong in 2020 (3-0 ATS) but failed to cover in four of its last six games, including the bowl game against Oklahoma State.
