Report: Drew Brees to join NBC in broadcasting role, post-retirement

Saints quarterback Drew Brees is planning to sign with NBC for his post-NFL retirement career, starting off as a Notre Dame analyst.

It hasn’t taken long for New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees to set up the next stage of his career. The New York Post’s Andrew Marchand reported Friday that Brees chose to sign with NBC after weighing an offer from ESPN, putting him in line as a possible replacement for Cris Collinsworth in the future.

However, NBC won’t just be throwing Brees into the booth once he’s hung up his cleats. The goal is for him to start off as an analyst for NBC’s weekly Notre Dame games while joining their Sunday night “Football Night in America” panels, reviewing the latest NFL action. That should give Brees time to get up to speed and prepare for a more prominent role in the network’s NFL coverage. If all goes according to plan, NFL fans could be hearing Brees and Mike Tirico (replacing Al Michaels) calling “Sunday Night Football” games in just a few years.

While Brees signed a two-year contract extension with the Saints earlier this season, only his first-year salary is guaranteed. He could retire after the 2020 season and leave just over $22 million in dead money on the 2021 Saints salary cap, or choose to play out the life of this deal and count for nearly $36 million next season. He certainly won’t be lacking for opportunities, whether he plays football again past 2020 or not.

Brian Kelly to Guest with Mike Tirico Thursday Afternoon

Notre Dame head coach will make a national television appearance on Thursday. Find out how you can watch him!

Are you bored sitting at home all day?

If you’ve recently been forced to work from home and play part-professional and part-parent and another part-teaches, I’m sure that’s the furthest thing from what you are.  Seriously, major hat-tip to all doing that.  Having a five month old and attempting it is hard enough so mad respect to all of you.

But if you’re looking for something to do or a way to pass the time today Brian Kelly will join Mike Tirico on NBC Sports Network early Thursday afternoon (ET).

NBC Sports Network recently launched the show and has set up several guests for Tirico to chat with, most being connected to one of the NBC Sports broadcast properties.

I’m sure we’ll get the regular update on how Kelly has been spending his time and what the latest is in terms of the Navy game, start dates for school and everything else.  Who knows though, maybe we’ll get a good couple of stories along the way too.

Check it out coming up shortly and if you miss it we’ll get a copy of it for you here once it becomes available.

Georgia basketball star Anthony Edwards goes No. 1 in latest NBA mock draft

Georgia forward Anthony Edwards goes No. 1 in NBC’s latest NBA mock draft

Georgia’s Anthony Edwards was selected at No. 1 in NBC Sports‘ latest NBA mock draft.

On June 25, Edwards could be UGA’s first ever No. 1 selection in the NBA Draft.

The 6-foot-4 guard was a one-and-done at Georgia, displaying an incredible scoring ability and freakish athleticism.

The SEC Freshman of the Year scored a team-leading 19.1 points per game while adding 5.2 rebounds and 2.8 assists per game.

On Edwards, NBC Sports wrote:

Edwards is the best scorer in this 2020 NBA Mock Draft. At 6-foot-4 with a 6-foot-8 wingspan and explosive athleticism, he’s proven himself to be a dangerous three-level bucket-getter that can get hot and do things like score 33 points in a half. Ask Michigan State. He also has the physical profile of a guard that can defend two or three different positions in the NBA. It’s all there.

Although Edwards is perhaps the most proficient scorer in this year’s draft class, there are still some questions regarding his jump-shot.

At UGA, Edwards shot 29% from the 3-pt line, however, the numbers may not reflect that the guard was forced to be a one-man show for the Bulldogs.

Whether Edwards goes first or not, Bulldog fans hope he lands with a certain team from Atlanta…..

The Hawks do currently hold one of 14 projected lottery picks, so there is a possibility Edwards may be back in the red and black this fall.

Report details post-retirement offers from TV networks recruiting Drew Brees

ESPN, FOX, and NBC are each offering New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees broadcasting opportunities once he’s retired from the NFL.

A $50 million contract extension hasn’t taken New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees off of the radar for the NFL’s broadcast partners. The New York Post’s Andrew Marchand reports that multiple television networks are working to recruit Brees as a game broadcaster once he’s retired from the NFL.

Per Marchand’s report, ESPN is offering the highest bid for Brees’ services — averaging nearly $6.5 million per year, which is what Jon Gruden earned as color analyst for ESPN’s “Monday Night Football” program before his return to the NFL. It’s also slightly less than the $7 million FOX pays Troy Aikman each year.

Where Brees would fit into the FOX lineup is unclear; while the report says that he would prefer to call games rather than sit on an in-studio panel for pregame and postgame shows, that’s an option along with their “Thursday Night Football” broadcast team, as well as the second-ranked Sunday crew (behind Aikman and Joe Buck).

NBC is also in the mix, possibly envisioning Brees as a replacement for Cris Collinsworth on “Sunday Night Football” in the future; right around the time in which Mike Tirico is expected to succeed Al Michaels. A Brees-Tirico pairing could be fascinating.

However, ESPN is in the lead even if the flagship network is in a strange position. They have not yet officially ruled out their Monday night matchup of Joe Tessitore and Booger McFarland (whose on-air gaffes wore thin on fans watching at home in 2019), and could very well promote their No. 2 team of Steve Levy, Louis Riddick, and Al Michaels to the top spot. It’s very much a fluid situation.

That instability isn’t helped by Brees returning for at least one more season. While he did sign a two-year deal, it’s structured so that he can retire after the 2020 season, leaving the Saints with just over $22 million in dead money counting against the salary cap. If Brees does choose to play again in 2021, that year’s accounting figure jumps to more than $36 million, meaning they would probably need to kick the can down the road a bit further with another contract extension. So don’t assume that he’ll play out both years of this two-year contract.

Whatever happens next, it’s clear that Brees will have plenty of options once he’s hung up his cleats. The question seems to be which television network he’ll sign with, and who will join him in the booth.

Daughter of Floyd Mayweather arrested for felony assault: report

The daughter of Floyd Mayweather, Iyanna, was arrested on charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon Saturday night in Houston.

The daughter of Floyd Mayweather, Iyanna, was arrested on charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon Saturday night in Houston, NBCnews.com reported.

Iyanna “Yaya” Mayweather, 19, allegedly stabbed a 25-year-old woman named Lapattra Lashai Jacobs during a fight over rapper NBA Youngboy. Jacobs did not suffer life-threatening injuries, according to police.

Mayweather was booked at around 1:30 a.m. at a jail in Harris County.

Police told TMZ that Jacobs and NBA Youngboy were at his home when Mayweather arrived, said she was engaged to the rapper and told Jacobs to leave

Jacobs, who reportedly has a child with the rapper, told Mayweather to leave, after which the argument moved to the kitchen. Mayweather was holding two knives when, according to TMZ sources, Jacobs lunged at Mayweather, who allegedly responded by stabbing the victim twice.

Jacobs reportedly was lying on the kitchen floor when paramedics arrived and she was taken to a hospital, where she underwent surgery.

Mayweather told police that Jacobs initiated the confrontation by pulling her hair. She said she had never met Jacobs before the incident.

NBA Youngboy, whose real name is Kentrell DeSean Gaulden, was briefly held by police and released. Police told NBCnews.com, “I can confirm that one of the witnesses interviewed by police at the scene is named Kentrell.”

Mayweather, 19, is the daughter of Floyd Mayweather and Melissa Brim. She is a singer and social media celebrity.

NBCSN will air back-to-back Broncos games on April 1

NBCSN will re-air back-to-back Broncos games featuring Peyton Manning on Wednesday evening.

Missing sports? NBCSN has you covered.

NBC Sports announced earlier this week that NBCSN will be re-airing several classic “Sunday Night Football” contests, including back-to-back Denver Broncos games on Wednesday, April 1.

At 5:00 p.m. MT on Wednesday, NBCSN will re-air Peyton Manning’s first game with the Broncos, a 2012 showdown with the Pittsburgh Steelers. After that, Manning’s first game against the Indianapolis Colts from the 2013 season will air starting at 7:30 p.m. MT on NBCSN.

In case you forgot the scores of those contests, we won’t share any spoilers here. But we will help set the scene.

In 2011, Denver knocked Pittsburgh out of the playoffs in the Wild Card round with Tim Tebow playing quarterback. The Broncos then signed Manning and traded Tebow to the New York Jets. Manning’s first game in Denver was against a team seeking revenge against the Broncos.

In 2013, Manning returned to Indianapolis after spending the first 14 years of his career with the Colts. He signed with Denver as a free agent in 2012.

NBCSN is channel No. 159 on Dish and No. 220 on DirecTV.

Report: NBC nixes idea of trading Al Michaels to ESPN

Al Michaels will be staying at NBC and on Sunday Night Football, per a New York Post report

Well, it was fun while the idea lasted. However, Al Michaels will not be returning to Monday Night Football through a trade between NBC and ESPN.

The New York Post’s Andrew Marchand reported the Peacock will keep its star play-by-play guy in the SNF booth.

“We look forward to Al completing his contract and calling ‘Sunday Night Football’ games on NBC,” Greg Hughes, an NBC Sports spokesman, told The Post.

ESPN declined comment.

Reports indicated ESPN as looking to ramp up its broadcast booth of MNF, going from Joe Tessitore and Booger McFarland, a heavily criticized coupling, to Michael and Peyton Manning. With Michaels out of the mix, the Post says ESPN is formulating other plans while not having told its current team it is out.

Though Tessitore and/or McFarland are not out yet, ESPN has formed several plans as it tries to figure out its Monday night booth. The Post previously reported ESPN’s interest in Philip Rivers. Rivers has said he intends to continue playing. ESPN passed on Kurt Warner for Jason Witten two years ago, but Warner is a name that can’t be ruled out.

Other names to keep an eye on per Marchand are: CBS’ Ian Eagle or FOX’s Kevin Burkhardt. Both are under contract, but are No. 2s on their networks’ NFL play-by-play depth charts, so there might be a more amenable compensation scenario as “Monday Night” could be looked upon as a promotion. Kevin Harlan, who is CBS’ No. 3 on the NFL and calls Monday night games for Westwood One radio, could also be considered.

Internally, ESPN has toyed with the idea of a booth with Steve Levy, Louis Riddick and Brian Griese, according to sources. The trio did the back end of the “Monday Night” doubleheader last year. ESPN is hesitant to move Chris Fo

How to watch the 2020 Players Championship

NBC Sports will dedicate 22 hours of live tournament coverage across Golf Channel and NBC, in addition to the new Every Shot Live service.

For viewers who are so inclined, the Players Championship will offer an opportunity to watch more golf coverage than ever before. For the first time, NBC Sports will collaborate with the PGA Tour to live stream every player in the field’s every shot throughout the Players Championship, to be played March 12-15 at TPC Sawgrass’ Players Stadium Course in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida.

Every Shot Live coverage will be available only to subscribers of PGA Tour Live on NBC Sports Gold. It’s the result of a colossal effort consisting of nearly 120 cameras positioned throughout the course, with each group having its own dedicated live stream.

Outside of that specialized coverage, NBC Sports will dedicate 22 hours of live tournament coverage across Golf Channel and NBC. Golf Central’s Live From show as well as Morning Drive will supplement that. Michelle Wie West, a five-time LPGA winner, will serve as a contributing analyst on Golf Central.

As for views of the par-3 17th, the daunting island green, NBC Sports will use eight high-definition cameras to cover the hole from all angles. That includes a microscopic lens embedded in the lip of the tiny bunker fronting the green.
