Warriors join Bay Area group to donate 50,000 face masks and bandanas to healthcare providers

With help from other Bay Area sports teams and NBC Sports Bay Area, the Golden State Warriors are donating 50,000 face coverings to healthcare providers.

Although there hasn’t been a basketball game in the Bay Area since March 10, the Golden State Warriors have been busy. While the league is on hiatus due to the coronavirus pandemic, Stephen Curry and the Warriors organization has been active in the fight against the rampant virus.

Players coaches and the ownership group of the Warriors have pledged funds towards the Chase Center disaster relief program. For their next donation, the Warriors teamed up with NBC Sports Bay Area and professional sports teams around the Bay Area.

The San Francisco 49ers, San Francisco Giants, Oakland A’s, San Jose Sharks, San Jose Earthquakes, Sacramento Kings and Golden State Warriors have linked up with NBC Sports Bay Area and Fanatics to donate 50,000 face coverings to healthcare providers during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Report: Warriors’ television ratings falling during 2019-20 season

During the 2019-20 season, the Golden State Warriors’ television numbers are falling at a massive rate.

The 2019-20 season has brought change upon the Golden State Warriors from top to bottom. While the Warriors embraced innovation with their new arena in San Francisco, the team didn’t want to modify anything when it came to the on-court product.

Over the past five seasons, the Golden State Warriors have been a premier team in the NBA, registering five consecutive Finals appearances. On top of winning, the Warriors rolled out one of the most dynamic starting lineups in basketball, featuring four All-Star players.

In the 2019-20 season, things are far from where they once were. The Warriors sit at the bottom of the Western Conference with a league-worst 12-43 record.

At the center of Golden State’s struggles has been injuries to Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson. Curry has only played four games all season due to a hand injury while Thompson has missed the entire year as he recovers from a knee injury he suffered in the 2019 NBA Finals.

In Golden State’s down season, the Warriors’ television ratings have suffered. According to the sports media and analysis outlet Awful Announcing, Golden State’s television broadcast flagship NBC Sports Bay Area is down 66 % when it comes to Warriors games.

Via Awful Announcing:

The Golden State Warriors, who have dominated the NBA’s local ratings for the last few years, saw their ratings decline by a staggering 66% on NBC Sports Bay Area. That’s the second-largest decline in the league (behind only the Denver Nuggets, down 72% on Altitude, which is beset by carriage issues), and has also knocked the Dubs out of the league’s top five overall.

Although things are bleak, the Golden State Warriors could receive a jolt in the final months of the season. Reports point to March as the target month for Curry’s return from his broken hand. A March returns to the floor would give the Warriors around 20 games with their former Most Valuable Player.

Although the Warriors are out of the playoff picture, the impact of Curry’s return turns Golden State into must-watch television. How the All-Star guard meshes with new teammates like Andrew Wiggins gives fans a peek into the future.

Steph Curry to serve as Warriors’ broadcast sideline analyst vs. Magic

Steph Curry will be along the Warriors sideline against the Orlando Magic, but not as the team’s point guard. Curry will join the broadcast as the team’s sideline reporter.

All reports point towards Stephen Curry progressing through his broken hand rehab at a stellar pace. The guard has yet to hit his initial re-evaluation date, but the consensus around his injury seems to be positive with the All-Star around the team with more consistency.

Golden State’s record sits at the bottom of the NBA’s Western Conference standings, making no need for the Warriors to rush him back anytime soon. However, Golden State’s fanbase will get a glimpse of Curry on the Chase Center floor in San Francisco, just not as the team’s point guard.

Curry will serve as the flagship’s broadcast sideline reporter against the Orlando Magic, according to NBC Sports Bay Area.

Curry will be the second member of the “Splash Brothers” to serve as a special sideline reporter this season, with Klay Thompson stepping in front of the microphone earlier in the year.

It’ll be a busy Saturday for Curry, as he’s scheduled to attend Thompson’s jersey retirement at Washington State early in the day. He’ll then fly back from the Pacific Northwest to the Bay Area for his sideline broadcasting debut.

Curry won’t be out on the Chase Center floor launching three-pointers as he’s still injured, but joining the broadcast from the sidelines, commenting on his teammates might be the next best thing.

With the Warriors struggling through a 10-game losing streak, a dose of the former two-time Most Valuable Player on the broadcast might be just what the Golden State fanbase needs.

WATCH: George Kittle practices Thursday, expected to play Sunday vs. Packers

Despite missing practice, Wednesday, being listed on the injury report with an ankle injury, tight end George Kittle practiced Thursday and is expected to play Sunday versus the Packers.

All the 49ers fans out there can breathe a sigh of relief. Despite missing practice, Wednesday, being listed on the injury report with an ankle injury, tight end George Kittle practiced Thursday and is expected to play Sunday versus the Packers.

According to NBC Sports Bay Area, head coach Kyle Shanahan said before practice that the 26-year-old would take the field with the team, explaining that the soreness in Kittle’s ankle on Wednesday would not impact his game. Reporters at San Francisco’s practice Thursday shared several pictures and videos of No. 85 back in action with the team after the day to heal.

Kittle missed a couple games this season with an ankle and a knee injury, but the Shanahan said he was surprised when, on Wednesday, Kittle was experiencing enough soreness to need to miss practice (although the coach did acknowledge that he knew kittle had some “wear and tear” from Sunday’s win versus the Vikings).

Kittle has 85 receptions for 1,053 yards this season and five touchdowns. The Niners and Packers kick off at 6:40 eastern time Sunday.

Klay Thompson to make 2019 season debut as Warriors sideline reporter

Klay Thompson will be returning to the Warriors against the Chicago Bulls, but not as a shooting guard. Instead, he will fill in as the broadcast sideline reporter.

Move over Kristen Ledlow and Cassidy Hubbarth; there’s a new rookie reporter about to make his debut along the NBA sideline. Warriors All-Star guard, Klay Thompson, will serve as the broadcast sideline reporter for Golden State’s upcoming home tilt versus the Chicago Bulls.

Thompson is still rehabbing from the ACL injury he suffered in game-six of the 2019 NBA Finals and won’t be playing. However, returning as a one-time broadcaster might be the next best thing.

Thompson’s taken on several personas across his career, including “China Klay,” “Headband Klay” and “Game Six Klay.” Thompson’s latest persona has been dubbed “Reporter Klay” by NBC Sports Bay Area, the television home of the Warriors.

We’ve seen memorable moments with Thompson on camera, like the time he enjoyed a satisfying postgame beer mid-interview, or when he was dosed with water by his fellow splash brother and couldn’t focus. Over Thompson’s career, he’s turned into one of the most amusing interviewees in the NBA; now it’s his turn to ask the questions.

The host of “Warriors Pregame Live,” Greg Papa, announced Thompson would appear as the broadcast’s sideline reporter for the second-quarter on the eve of Thanksgiving against the Bulls. Regular sideline reporter, Kerith Burke will serve as Thompson’s mentor.

With the team struggling, any distraction from the Warriors 3-15 record is a positive. Thompson’s been the figurehead of many viral moments with Golden State; now, in front of a camera for an entire quarter, he’s bound to provide entertaining content.

The most interesting moment of the night could come when Thompson has to interview Steve Kerr— will the coach give him the Gregg Popovich treatment?
