Ranking the 11 active ‘NBA 75’ members by chances to win the next championship

From Giannis Antetokounmpo’s attempt to repeat to Damian Lillard’s sad situation in Portland.

No matter the league, championships are among the most coveted accomplishments in all of sports. And perhaps in no league are they used as a barometer of greatness more than the NBA.

Michael Jordan’s status as G.O.A.T. is often credited to his 6-0 NBA Finals record. Other superstars are held back in similar conversations by their lack of a title or comparable title amounts to other players.

That doesn’t mean those players aren’t acknowledged as all-time greats. A glimpse at the NBA’s 75th anniversary team shows several players who deservingly made the cut despite their lack of a championship. But within those ranks is where the accolades matter, including things like MVPs, All-NBA, All-Defense and All-Star selections. The list goes on.

For the majority of those 75, it’s too late to change the narrative about their careers and where they stand among other giants. However, 11 of them are still active and have ample time to add to their legacies. Below we take a look at those active players and their current situations and rank them based on best chances to win a championship, either this season or beyond.

ESPN ranks LeBron James second on NBA’s 75th Anniversary Team

LeBron James trailed only Michael Jordan on ESPN’s ranking of the NBA’s 75th Anniversary Team.

The 2022 NBA All-Star game had an incredible moment during halftime when members of the league’s 75th Anniversary Team got recognized for their respective careers.

The league has been honoring its 75th season these last few months, and it’s provided publications with the chance to sort out who the best players are in the pool of 75.

In ESPN’s latest ranking of the 75th Anniversary Team, Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James came in second, just behind Michael Jordan:

Long before player empowerment entered the vernacular, James blazed a path to have his endorsements become partnerships, his status as a player become that of a stakeholder, his public persona to include an element of social activism. While James’ individual accomplishments will put his career near the very top of all to have ever played the sport, the blueprint he created will give others a chance to maximize their experience as a professional athlete. —  Dave McMenamin

The 10 biggest snubs who were left off the NBA’s 75 greatest players list

Dwight Howard, Kyrie Irving and more deserve consideration.

The NBA’s 75 greatest players list is finally complete and, as suspected, there’s been plenty of debate about who should and should not have been left off.

The NBA kept all of the names from the original list of 50 and added 25 new players — some who weren’t in the league at the time and some who just didn’t make the list previously.

But there were still plenty of names that were left off the list that have a legitimate case for a spot. Would you remove anyone else currently on the list for them? Maybe. But regardless, there’s a case.

And we’re here to dive into a few of them, starting with this one.

Lakers’ LeBron James reacts to making NBA 75th Anniversary Team

Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James is stoked to be named to the NBA 75th Anniversary Team along with other legends.

With the 2021-22 NBA season underway, it marks the 75th anniversary of the league. To honor the historic milestone, the league announced 75 players to the 75th Anniversary Team.

The team comprises 75 of the best players to have touched the hardwood, and the league rolled out the players in batches of 25.

Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James had his name called in the last group Thursday, which was expected.

James will go down as one of the greatest to play the sport because of his accomplishments throughout 18 seasons. Now entering year 19, James is hoping to add more to his collection.

But as the new season unfolds, James took to social media to react to the news:

Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen named to NBA’s 75th Anniversary Team

The two six-time champions were locks to join the NBA 75.

There aren’t many dynamic duos, if any, that can top what Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen accomplished in their time together on the Chicago Bulls.

To no surprise, on Wednesday, the two Hall of Famers were named to the NBA’s 75th Anniversary Team, as announced on ESPN’s NBA Today.

In 13 seasons as a Chicago Bull, Michael Jordan won six championships while hoisting five NBA MVP’s and six NBA Finals MVP trophies. Over his 15-year career, Jordan was a 14-time All-Star, 11-time All-NBA, 9-time All-Defensive, 10-time scoring champion, and the fifth all-time leading scorer in league history among a million other amazing things.

Scottie Pippen won those same six championships alongside Jordan. Over his 17-year career, Pippen was named a 7-time All-Star, 7-time All-NBA, and 10-time All-Defensive Team.

Both Jordan and Pippen were named to the original ‘NBA at 50’ list, which was made up of the 50 greatest players in league history as of Oct. 29, 1996.
