Steelers sign ex-Browns safety Nate Meadors to practice squad

The Steelers signed safety Nate Meadors to their practice squad.

The Pittsburgh Steelers addressed their need for depth at inside linebacker with the addition of Jaylon Smith on Tuesday and did the same at the safety position.

Journeyman Nate Meadors originally signed with the Minnesota Vikings in 2019 as an undrafted free agent and has had stints with the New York Giants, Jacksonville Jaguars, Philadelphia Eagles, Tennessee Titans, and, most recently, the Cleveland Browns. He also played in the XFL for the St. Louis Battlehawks.

Meadors’ last game action came in 2020 via the Vikings’ special teams. He played 11 defensive snaps for Minnesota in 2019.

With Keanu Neal on injured reserve and injuries to Minkah Fitzpatrick and Trenton Thompson, safety has been widdled down to Patrick Peterson, Eric Rowe, Miles Killebrew and Elijah Riley. Damontae Kazee is serving a three-game suspension handed down by the NFL for an illegal hit against the Colts in Week 15.

Browns follow up loss vs. Commanders with plethora of roster moves

The Browns made a flurry of roster moves.

The Cleveland Browns have battled injuries all training camp, and that did not slow down as they took on the Washington Commanders on Friday night. It has resulted in linebacker Jacob Phillips landing on Injured Reserve among other roster moves the team was forced to make to fill their 90-man roster back up.

Here are all four roster moves the Browns made today as they continue to work through injuries.

Browns workout Jordan Wilkins, 4 others as they continue to deal with injuries

We knew about Wilkins, but it turns out the Browns had a total of five in for a workout.

The Cleveland Browns are stuck in a hard place as they continue to work through injuries to young players like running back Jerome Ford. They had a handful in for workouts yesterday as a result. We knew about former Indianapolis Colts running back Jordan Wilkins coming in for a workout, but according to Aaron Wilson, the Browns had four others in the building as well.

Here is the full list of the five players who were in Berea trying to earn a spot on Cleveland’s 90-man roster.

8 former Vikings getting another shot in the XFL

The XFL returns on Saturday and there are multiple former Vikings that will be suiting up

One of the best parts of football in the 21st century is that it doesn’t end with the Super Bowl. The National Football League has done a such a great job making football a year-round thing that we now have two spring leagues.

The first one is the relaunch of the XFL which has their kickoff game on Saturday between the Las Vegas Vipers and Arlington Renegades — it’ll be broadcast nationally on ABC, beginning at 2 p.m. CT.

For Minnesota Vikings fans, they will have eight different Vikings that are playing in the XFL across five different teams. Here is the full list:

Giants claim CB Nate Meadors off waivers, hold OL workouts

The New York Giants have claimed DB Nate Meadors off of waivers from the Cleveland Browns.

With a spot available on their 90-man roster, the New York Giants claimed defensive back Nate Meadors off of waivers from the Cleveland Browns on Thursday.

The 25-year-old Meadors originally signed with the Minnesota Vikings as an undrafted free agent out of UCLA in 2019. After being released in September of 2020, he was quickly scooped up by the Jacksonville Jaguars and placed on their practice squad.

In 2021, Meadors had a cup of coffee with the Philadelphia Eagles before joining the Cleveland Browns. He remained with the Browns until being waived earlier this week.

The 5-foot-11, 194-pound Meadors has appeared in three NFL games and recorded two tackles.

In addition to claiming Meadors off of waivers, the Giants also held offensive tackle workouts on Thursday. Among those in attendance were Will Holden, Mitch Hyatt and Kyle Murphy.

None were immediately signed to a contract.

Browns workout 8, sign 1, release 1 on Wednesday

8 players in, one of them signed (a big receiver) and a DB released as Berry continues to churn the bottom of the roster:

The Cleveland Browns under GM Andrew Berry are constantly working on moving around pieces on their roster for a variety of reasons. The churning of the bottom of the roster is a staple of Berry’s management.

On Wednesday, the team had eight players into Berea for workouts. While sometimes workouts are just for one position, Cleveland had a variety of players from multiple positions during this time:

  • WR Daylen Baldwin – Michigan
  • LB Davin Bellamy – Georgia
  • DB John Brannon – Western Carolina
  • WR Emeka Emezie – North Carolina State
  • WR Juwan Green – Albany, NY
  • DB Tae Hayes – Appalachian State
  • DB Lavert Hill – Michigan
  • DE Chris Odom – Arkansas State

Now that the team has gotten a chance to see the players on their 90-man roster, it looks like they may have some interest in shuffling some of them around if a workout goes well.

Wednesday, the Browns signed Baldwin to add to their receiver room and released DB Nate Meadors in the process.

Baldwin was a big play receiver in college with a 21 yards per catch average in 2020 and a 15 yards per catch average last year. At 6’2″ and 219 pounds, Baldwin adds some size to the receiver room.

Along with seven undrafted free agents, the Eagles signed defensive back Nate Meadors on Friday morning as well.

The 24-year-old Meadors spent nine games of the 2020 season on the Jacksonville Jaguars practice squad, being called up for one game.

Meadors signed with the Minnesota Vikings as a rookie free agent in 2019 out of UCLA.

LB Joe Giles-Harris among 4 released by Jags

The Jags had to get their roster back to the offseason minimum after the draft and decided to release four players.

The Jacksonville Jaguars started Tuesday off with some post-draft transactions, releasing linebackers Joe Giles-Harris and Nate Evans, and defensive backs Nate Meadors and Doug Middleton. The moves come as the Jags added nine draft selections and some undrafted free agents, but needed to get their roster back to the minimum number of players allowed on an offseason roster (90).

Of the group, Middleton was the most experienced and 2020 marked his fifth season. He initially joined the Jags (for a second stint after being with them in 2019) through their practice squad in September. He ultimately played in 10 games for the team and was able to garner nine total tackles.

Giles-Harris was probably the most significant contributor as he made strides in 2020. He started in three games for the Jags in 2020 and was able to accumulate 20 total tackles. Giles-Harris also was able to register a Pro Football Focus grade of 75.6, which was the highest on the team though he only took 205 defensive snaps. That said, his release could be a simple case of the Jags moving to a new defensive system.

Meadors, who was a second-year player and Evans, who was an undrafted rookie last season, didn’t get to take any snaps with the team. They both were on the Jags’ practice squad last season though Meadors was activated against the Minnesota Vikings.

Bleacher Report lists cornerback as Vikings’ biggest red flag

Among all the position groups that are a problem for Minnesota, Bleacher Report thinks cornerback is the biggest.

For the Minnesota Vikings, there is a lot to choose from when it comes to red flags for next season.

From the offensive line to the defensive line, there are players who were key contributors during 2019-20, who will likely no longer be with the team next season. But Bleacher Report thinks the biggest red flag for the Vikings is at cornerback.

Bleacher Report mentioned the loss of Xavier Rhodes, who reportedly signed with the Colts, and Trae Waynes, who reportedly signed with the Bengals, in free agency. The outlet also said this:

“Minnesota’s starting cornerbacks right now are Mike Hughes and Nate Meadors. That’s not going to get Minnesota past Green Bay in the NFC North—much less past Drew Brees and the Saints or Jimmy Garoppolo and the 49ers in the NFC.”

Rhodes isn’t totally a big loss, but Waynes will be hard to replace. Hopefully the team can draft solid cornerbacks, in addition to Hughes, Meadors and Holton Hill playing well and staying on the field in 2020-21.

Vikings place Mackensie Alexander on IR, sign CB Nate Meadors

Alexander has been a big part of this defense over the last two seasons in the nickel role.

The season for Vikings cornerback Mackensie Alexander is over after he underwent knee surgery this week. The team placed Alexander on the IR on Friday.

To replace Alexander’s spot on the roster, the Vikings signed cornerback Nate Meadors to the active roster in preparation for Saturday’s divisional game against the 49ers.

Meadors spents two games on the active roster in Week 2 and Week 3 this season. Meadors played his college ball at UCLA from 2015-18 and finished with three interceptions. He signed with the Vikings as an undrafted free agent.

It’s unlikely we see a lot of Meadors on Saturday aside from special teams.

Alexander has been a big part of this defense over the last two seasons in the nickel role.

Has he played his last-career game with the Vikings?

It’s something to keep an eye on. The 2016 second-round pick is set to be an unrestricted free agent this offseason.
