Panthers injury update: DB Myles Hartsfield leaves Week 1 contest

Panthers CB Myles Hartsfield was ruled out of the Week 1 opener against the Jets with a wrist injury.

The Carolina Panthers entered Sunday’s season opener with a near clean bill of health. That good luck would continue for much of the game, until the news of Myles Hartsfield popped up.

Hartsfield, who left the game against the Jets with a wrist injury, has been ruled out midway through the second half. He had initially been deemed questionable to return.

Considering the Panthers were relatively thin at the cornerback position already, Hartsfield’s exit does not bode well moving forward, at least before hearing any additional updates. The second-year defender is one of Carolina’s primary defenders out of the slot.

As noted by Darin Gantt of Panthers.com, the team was already missing veteran cover man A.J. Bouye. Bouye will return in Week 3 upon serving the final two games of his six-game suspension to start the campaign.

Projecting the Carolina Panthers’ Week 1 depth chart

How will the Panthers’ depth chart look for Week 1? Well probably like this . . .

The Carolina Panthers are not a finished product as we scoot through this Labor Day weekend. But they’ll need to turn something in ahead of Week 1, despite the work that’s left to be done to the roster.

We take a crack at that here, as we give you our projections for the team’s first regular-season depth chart as they prepare to host the New York Jets in the 2021 opener.

Panthers injury updates: CB A.J. Bouye ‘pulled something’

The Panthers have gone relatively unscathed through their offseason program when it comes to injuries.

The Panthers have gone relatively unscathed through their offseason program when it comes to injuries. A few players have been in and out of practice, but there’s been no real significant harm so far. Hopefully that’s still the case. However, there was one notable issue at today’s practice.

Veteran cornerback A.J. Bouye went down at one point and had to be looked at by trainers. He was escorted to the medical tent and did not return to practice. Afterwards, coach Matt Rhule told reporters that Bouye “pulled something,” but didn’t offer any more details than that.

Bouye has been playing the nickel corner role for the Panthers despite having spent his entire NFL career to this point lining up outside. He will be suspended for the first two games of the season due to a 2020 PED violation, so they’ll have to tinker their rotation in Weeks 1-2 in any case.

As to who might take his place, Darin Gantt says Myles Hartsfield took over in the slot when Bouye left the field. Hartsfield has proven to be an extremely versatile undrafted defender for Carolina – he’s also put in time at safety and running back.

Panthers rookie watch: Lightning strikes twice for Jeremy Chinn

Here is how the rookies did in Week 12.

The Panthers did not get what they needed from their starting quarterback or their coaching staff in Sunday’s loss to the Vikings. However, one of their rookies almost single-handedly won the game by making NFL history.

Here is how the rookies did in Week 12.

Lightning struck twice for Jeremy Chinn

There’s always a lot of luck involved in recovering fumbles. The odds for it to happen twice in a row must be astronomical. For Chinn to scoop up two fumbles on consecutive plays and run them both back for touchdowns is more than just luck, though. Chinn had to be in the right place at the right time and put himself in position to succeed.

This was the first time in NFL history a defender scored touchdowns on back-to-back plays. Chinn also threw in a team-high 13 tackles against Minnesota. It’s no longer hype or speculation. He has the potential to be one of the most effective defensive players in this league.

Derrick Brown did it again

Carolina’s first-round pick is becoming a respectable mover of the pocket, even if he can’t get a sack. Brown came into Week 12 leading all 2020 rookies in pressures. However, he’s still having serious penalty problems. Brown drew another flag against the Vikings this week, bringing his season total to nine, more than any other player in the NFL. Brown has to find a way to play with more discipline, end of story. This wasn’t a great game for him, but Brown did add two more quarterback hits.

Yetur Gross-Matos was quiet

Gross-Matos didn’t have much of an impact on this game. He was able to get a couple of pressures on Kirk Cousins and notched half a tackle for a loss, though.

Bravvion Roy got a sack and an injury

Sixth-round pick Bravvion Roy earned the first sack of his career when Kirk Cousins fell down after getting his foot stepped on by his left guard. Roy left the field early with an elbow injury, though.

Troy Pride Jr. stepped up

With Donte Jackson out, Troy Pride Jr. and Stantley Thomas-Oliver split his reps on the outside again. Pride’s coverage looked to be much improved from what we have come to expect, as we saw on this PBU when he was covering Justin Jefferson.

Stantley Thomas-Oliver did not

Thomas-Oliver was notably less successful, though. He got flambeed on this touchdown for Jefferson.

As for the other rookies, Myles Hartsfield came through with another splash play on special teams when he recovered the muffed punt return by Chad Beebe. Running back Rodney Smith totaled 18 yards on seven carries.

The 7 biggest surprises about the Panthers’ initial 2020 roster

Here are the seven biggest surprises about this group.

The Carolina Panthers revealed their initial 53-man roster for the 2020 season yesterday after Saturday’s cut-downs. As is the case every year, it looks a little bit different than we were anticipating.

Here are the seven biggest surprises about this group.

No room for DE Efe Obada

On Sunday morning, Obada tweeted about how grateful he was to make the 53-man roster again. Hours later he was waived, giving Carolina fans another low-key shock at the end of an offseason that seemed to be defined by popular players suddenly and unceremoniously being shown the door. Obada hasn’t played much. However, he has flashed enough to warrant a spot, even winning NFC Defensive Player of the Week honors once. It’s possible the Panthers are hoping Obada he clears waivers so they can add him to their practice squad, which still has a few open spots.

Panthers 2020 training camp: Projecting 5 potential cuts on defense

Let’s take a look at the next potential five cuts on defense.

The Carolina Panthers began padded practices yesterday after announcing a series of offensive roster moves on Sunday. The team picked up wide receivers Tommylee Lewis and Marken Michel plus tight end Andrew Vollert. To make room, they cut DeAndrew White, Cam Sutton and two rookie linebackers.

More releases will be coming soon. Let’s take a look at the next potential five cuts on defense.

DE Myles Adams

As an undrafted rookie, Adams already had a difficult road to make the 53-man roster this year. Things got more complicated on Monday when the Panthers claimed former Cowboys defensive end Jalen Jelks off waivers. Early-round picks like Yetur Gross-Matos are assured their spots, but Adams doesn’t have that advantage built in for him. He will need to separate himself from the rest if he’s going to survive the next round of cuts.
