Myles Garrett reveals his injury is worse than initially thought

The level of cause for concern has raised a bit.

After the win against the Jacksonville Jaguars, defensive end and reigning Defensive Player of the Year Myles Garrett revealed he is playing through a foot injury.

He stated that he would continue to play through it, but through two practice days leading up to their Week 3 matchup against the New York Giants, Garrett has not suited up. He did not appear on the gameday injury designations, meaning he will play through the injury again this week, but the All-Pro has revealed the injury is worse than initially stated.

Cleveland dot com’s Mary Kay Cabot has stated that Garrett revealed it is actually both of his feet that are bothering him and not just one. Garrett stated that he had double foot surgery as a child, and this might be a lasting effect of the previous surgery.

Furthermore, while Garrett has plans to continue to play through the injury, there have already been discussions about another possible procedure on his feet down the road.

This is good news on the surface as Garrett can get this corrected again, but now the thought about whether or not this will be a lasting and reoccurring problem as he nears the age of 30 will be stuck in the back of the minds of many, including the Browns and Garrett.

Giants vs. Browns: 3 reasons for optimism in Week 3

The New York Giants visit the Cleveland Browns on Sunday afternoon in Week 3, and here are three reasons for optimism.

The New York Giants will play their second straight road game on Sunday when they take on the Cleveland Browns. They come in with hopes of getting their first win of the season, which is quickly getting away from them.

The Browns are coming off their first victory of the year in Week 2 against the Jacksonville Jaguars and are nearly touchdown favorites at home against the Giants.

New York hopes to continue the improvement we saw from Week 1 to Week 2, but face a tall task in the Browns.

Here are three reasons for optimism ahead of Sunday’s matchup.

New offensive weapon unleashed

The Giants let Saquon Barkley walk in free agency and brought in Malik Nabers to be their featured weapon in the offense.

In the team’s Week 2 matchup against the Commanders, Nabers was featured early and often and had a breakout game that proved he is everything he was hyped up to be.

Clearly, Brian Daboll had a plan to get Nabers the ball as much as possible and we can likely expect the offense to continue to run through Nabers.

Offensive confidence to build off of

Last week, the Giants’ offense had a much-improved performance — particularly quarterback Daniel Jones.

Jones came in poised to silence the critics and had a much cleaner performance than a week prior against the Vikings.

It wasn’t just Jones, however. The offensive line contributed to a strong performance in the running game as well which helped open up the passing game.

Obviously, the Giants did not get the win last week but there was much more to come away feeling good about that they will hope to bring into Week 3.

Offensive Line Competence

The Giants’ offensive line has been getting worked on for what feels like 15 years at this point. But it’s finally beginning to resemble something noteworthy.

In Week 3, they will have the biggest individual task they’ve faced so far this season in Myles Garrett, who is one of the best pass rushers in the NFL and can take over a game.

In previous years, a player like Garrett would be a terrifying task for the Giants’ suspect offensive line. However, this group may be up to the task. They may not be able to keep Garrett out of the box score, but they’ll be motivated to at least limit his impact on the game.

Myles Garrett ranks top ten in ESPN’s pass rush win rate

Myles Garrett ranks tenth in ESPN’s pass rush win rate metric. The reigning DPOY is looking for his second title this season.

Cleveland Browns star and reigning NFL Defensive Player of the Year Myles Garrett ranks in the top ten of edge rushers in ESPN’s pass rush win rate. The metric uses real time location data to determine if the offensive or defensive player won the snap. The tracking data does a good job of removing some of the subjectiveness from third party graders.

Garrett has started the season hot. He’s recorded two sacks and two fumbles in two weeks. ESPN has awarded Garrett eight wins in 30 pass rush attempts for a 27 percent pass rush win rate. Garrett has been double-teamed on 30 percent of those attempts.

According to NFL’s Next Gen Stats, Garrett recorded the fastest sack this season. Garrett’s sack on Dak Prescott in Week 1 occurred in 2.57 seconds. The second-fastest sack happened in 2.6 seconds when Jordan Hicks sacked Trevor Lawrence last week. Most sacks take longer than three seconds to develop.

Garrett injured his foot last week and has played coy with the media about the severity. He played less than 70 percent of the defensive snaps against the Jaguars, primarily missing plays on early downs. Garrett will likely play this weekend, but he didn’t practice on Wednesday. Garrett must remain healthy over the next week. The Browns are set to play against several quarterbacks prone to taking sacks.

A healthy Garrett can use the next month to separate himself early in the Defensive Player of the Year race.

Giants vs. Browns: 3 causes for concern in Week 3

The New York Giants square off in a Sunday afternoon battle against the Cleveland Browns in Week 3. Here are three reasons for concern.

The New York Giants will travel for their second consecutive road game on Sunday when they play the Cleveland Browns at Huntington Bank Field.

The Giants enter Sunday’s game hoping to stop the bleeding and get their first win of the season. Meanwhile, the Browns are 1-1, hoping to pick up their second consecutive win coming off their Week 2 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars

The Giants have the odds stacked against them as they are currently a near-touchdown underdog ahead of Sunday’s game.

With the Giants desperate for their first win, here are three causes for concern.

Browns red zone offense

The Giants’ defense was a big reason the team was not able to come away with the win last week against the Commanders. Washington had their way all game long, getting to the red zone at will. Once they got to the red zone, however, the Giants made a stand — all seven times. Despite not allowing a touchdown all game, Big Blue also never forced a single punt or turnover from the Washington offense.

The Browns pose a much bigger threat to the Giants’ defense than the Commanders, especially in the red zone. Cleveland ranks first in the entire NFL in red zone efficiency, where they are 100 percent in their trips inside the 20-yard line this season.

Lack of forced turnovers

Last season, the Giants gave themselves extra possessions by forcing the most turnovers in the NFL. Through two games this year, the defense, now run by Shane Bowen, has forced just one turnover. If the Browns’ offensive efficiency in the red zone is going to continue, the Giants’ defense may need to force a few turnovers to keep the score tight.

Browns against the pass

The Giants’ offense was strides better last week than they were in Week 1 and a big credit belongs to the connection between Daniel Jones and Malik Nabers.

With the Browns presenting one of the best pass rushers in the league, the offensive line will certainly have their hands full with Myles Garrett as they try to give Jones time to throw.

The passing game will also have their hands full. Through two weeks, the Browns have allowed the lowest opponent completion percentage in the entire league. Brian Daboll may have to get creative for the offense to move the ball on Sunday.

Myles Garrett still battling foot injury after win vs. Jaguars

Garrett intends to play through it.

The Cleveland Browns were successful in their visit to Jacksonville after winning the matchup against the Jaguars 18-13 with the help of star defensive end Myles Garrett.

The All-Pro had another solo sack in this week’s performance after recording his first of the season against the Dallas Cowboys last week. He collected three tackles that were all credited to only himself. Despite a solid performance and team victory, Garrett still thinks about his foot injury.

Myles Garrett took the podium to answer questions after the win against Jacksonville. When asked how his injury felt during the game today, he made it clear that it was bothersome. “It didn’t feel great. I’ve been battling it, and there were some ups and downs,” Garrett responded when asked about his foot.

Despite this, he managed to play through the game until the Jacksonville Jaguars’ last-second hail mary attempt to win, indicating a positive outlook for his availability in future games.

We’ll see how this affects the Browns star as they prepare to take on the New York Giants in Cleveland.

Myles Garrett: Browns were motivated by Jaguars’ ‘TrEverBank’ Stadium

Myles Garrett: Browns were motivated by Jaguars’ ‘TrEverBank’ Stadium

The Browns will go down as the only team to win a game in “TrEverBank” Stadium.

EverBank Stadium’s temporary name change for Jacksonville’s Week 2 matchup with Cleveland, recognizing Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence and his partnership with the locally-based financial services company, motivated the Browns in their 18-13 victory in Week 2.

“We heard about it and, you know, it just adds a little fuel to the fire,” star Cleveland edge rusher Myles Garrett said after the contest. “If that’s going to be the main guy, we’ve got to take him out [of] the game.”

Cleveland was effective in this approach.

The Browns’ defense limited Lawrence to 16 passing yards in the first half on Sunday, as the Jaguars managed to score just three points in the opening 30 minutes.

Jacksonville’s offense fought its way back into the game with a 10-point second half, highlighted by a rushing touchdown by running back Travis Etienne Jr. and several explosive gains between Lawrence and Jaguars wide receivers Brian Thomas Jr. and Gabe Davis.

But with the ball down three points and facing a 98-yard drive, Lawrence was sacked for a safety with 1:44 left in regulation, extending Cleveland’s lead to five points, 18-13.

The Browns went three-and-out with their final possession, giving the Jaguars one more opportunity to pull off a comeback. Lawrence and Co. drove 62 yards down the field, from Jacksonville’s 10, but a Hail Mary pass to tight end Brenton Strange on the last play fell incomplete.

Lawrence was brutally honest in his evaluation of Jacksonville’s offensive performance over its last six quarters, pairing the Jaguars’ 13-point Sunday showing with their zero-score second-half performance against Miami in Week 1, leading the Dolphins to a 20-17 comeback win.

“We suck right now, so I’m pretty shocked,” Lawrence said. “Obviously, we had a great off-season, great training camp, and we’ve got to figure it out. We know we’ve got a good group, we’ve got good players, and we can be a really good offense, but clearly we’re not.

“Everybody has got to take accountability, look in the mirror, and fix it. I’ve got to play better. I’m the leader of this offense. It’s on me. The wideouts got to play better, the line has got to play better, running backs got to play better, we’ve got to coach better. It’s everybody, honestly.”

Key matchups for Jacksonville Jaguars vs. Cleveland Browns

Key matchups for Jacksonville Jaguars vs. Cleveland Browns

Coming off a tough loss in South Florida, the Jacksonville Jaguars are set for their home opener against the Cleveland Browns on Sunday as both teams look to avoid an 0-2 start.

This week Jacksonville looks to be more consistent with its offensive production while Cleveland is again forced to deal with quarterback Deshaun Watson and his off-field issues as the Browns await the return of all-world running back Nick Chubb.

Week 2 will give both teams a better picture of what and who they are moving forward into the 2024 campaign. The Jaguars hope for better execution in their offensive approach following their blown lead to the Miami Dolphins.

With that in mind, Jaguars Wire is here to identify some key matchups for Jacksonville’s Week 2 matchup with Cleveland. Here are three matchups the Jaguars must win to avoid a winless start to the season.

Cleveland QB Deshaun Watson vs. Jacksonville’s defense

One of the key takeaways from this past Sunday was the Jaguars’ admirable defensive performance against the explosive Dolphins offense. They mostly limited significant explosive plays and generated four-man pressures through their front four.

Browns head coach and play-caller Kevin Stefanski is known for his offensive creativity and has put Watson in positions to succeed. But since returning from suspension nearly two seasons ago, the former Clemson standout has yet to return to his pre-2021 form.

Watson’s performance against the Dallas Cowboys offered a clear sign of his current abilities.

According to Next Gen Stats, Watson was pressured on 44.6% of dropbacks, finishing 5-of-17 for 22 yards against pressure while being sacked six times. His 23.2 percent dropback success rate was the lowest in a game in the Next Gen Stats era.

Watson has declined, and the Jaguars have the defense to force him off his spot and into bad decisions. Plus, Jacksonville has the athletic defenders necessary to stick with Watson in quarterback contain.

If defensive coordinator Ryan Nielsen’s unit can generate pressures and rattle Watson early, it should be a good day for Jacksonville.

Jacksonville’s offensive line vs. Cleveland’s defensive line

The trenches will be a key matchup in this game but none more crucial than the Jaguars offensive line against the Browns stellar pass rush, led by All-Pro defensive end Myles Garrett.

Jacksonville’s front five did a decent job of protecting franchise quarterback Trevor Lawrence against the Dolphins, allowing a pressure rate of 32%, ranking No. 14 in the NFL in Week 1.

However, Cleveland defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz is arguably the best in the game at his position and finds ways of consistently getting to the QB. Against the Cowboys, most of the Browns’ pressures came from a defensive front featuring three defensive ends and one defensive tackle.

Having an extra edge rusher lined up at the three-technique could prove disadvantageous for Jacksonville’s guards due to the speed and quickness of Cleveland’s rushers. Schwartz will likely deploy this fairly often in passing situations.

The biggest concern will be if the Jaguars can limit Garrett, arguably the best pass rusher in the world. This offensive line will also have to account for defensive tackles Dalvin Tomlinson and Shelby Harris, and defensive ends Za’Darius Smith and Alex Wright.

Jacksonville seems up for the challenge considering its Week 1 performance. Right guard Brandon Scherff must have a better game after an up-and-down showing in Miami. However, left guard Ezra Cleveland and center Mitch Morse held their own against the Dolphins and can build upon their performances this week.

Tackles Cam Robinson and Anton Harrison will have a lot on their plate Sunday, but another solid day from these five linemen could signal success for the Jaguars in Week 2.

Jacksonville’s skill players vs. Cleveland’s back-seven

Once again, the Jaguars’ group of offensive skill players will face another tough secondary only this time on their home turf.

The Browns have a defensive unit that allowed a negative .20 expected points added (EPA) per play allowed. Their back seven is led by star linebacker Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah and three-time Pro Bowl cornerback Denzel Ward with more quality defenders roaming the second and third level.

For most teams, including Jacksonville, facing Cleveland’s back seven is a tall task. Nevertheless, the Jaguars have last week’s first-half performance to go off of when it comes to taking on other stout back seven defenders.

Rookie wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr. must be a focal point Sunday. The offense was humming when he was being targeted and he adds a level of explosiveness and playmaking ability this unit has not had in quite some time. His zero targets in the second half were inexcusable.

This weekend could be a good time for the Jaguars to deploy Evan Engram into the passing game in his new versatile role as the F-move tight end and fullback. He could be the X-factor against a tough Browns secondary.

Finding explosive plays and getting the ball to the team’s best playmakers will be another crucial aspect in their pursuit of a home-opener victory.

Myles Garrett answers questions on his injury ahead of Jaguars game

Garrett, while hurt this week, is ready to roll.

Cleveland Browns star Myles Garrett is trying to keep his confidence after he sustained a foot injury in the Week 1 loss against the Cowboys. After starting the week with missing practice on Wednesday, he returned to practice on Thursday along with other defensive end Za’Darius Smith ahead of their matchup with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Despite suffering an injury, Garrett had a solid performance with 2 combined tackles and one sack on quarterback Dak Prescott. He will look to improve his stat line despite his lingering foot injury.

The All-Pro defensive end took the podium to answer questions this afternoon about his injury and expectations for himself going into Sunday’s matchup. When asked if he will be affected in the matchup against the Jaguars, he answered with:

“We’ll see.”

On the Jaguars end, starting left tackle Cam Robinson was a limited participant in practice on Thursday. This leaves him questionable for his matchup against Myles Garrett this Sunday in Cleveland.

There is no doubt that Myles Garrett will attempt to play through the pain this Sunday. Browns fans have witnessed him playing through injuries before, yet he has remained a solid pass rusher for the team when doing so. We’ll see how much his foot will affect him this week in Jacksonville.
