MSU head coach Harlon Barnett provides QB updates, avoids naming starter

MSU apparently knows who will be starting at quarterback this week but is not going to share that until Saturday

Michigan State apparently knows who will be starting at quarterback this week but is not going to share that until Saturday.

Head coach Harlon Barnett elected to not name a starting quarterback during his weekly press conference on Monday, but he did provide a somewhat notable update. Barnett said the team knows what they are going to do at that position when they take the field against Rutgers on Saturday.

Here’s how Graham Couch of the Lansing State Journal viewed Barnett’s update on Monday:

Noah Kim has started the first five games of the season but has struggled in the Spartans’ last three games — all of which they’ve lost. Kim has thrown six interceptions to only one touchdown in those three straight losses.

Kim’s struggles have resulted in many wanting the Spartans to switch things up and give freshman Katin Houser a chance at starting. Houser has appeared in only six career games and thrown 18 pass attempts.

Kickoff between Michigan State and Rutgers is scheduled for 12 p.m. ET on Saturday. The game will be televised on Big Ten Network.

MSU head coach Harlon Barnett provides update on QB situation

Hear what Harlon Barnett had to say about the Spartans’ starting quarterback situation on his weekly radio show

We can officially say there is some uncertainty at the starting quarterback position for Michigan State.

Noah Kim has started the first five games this year, but has struggled in the last three outings which has many fans calling for a change at the position. Most are looking for former four-star recruit Katin Houser to take over and there appears to be a higher chance of that happening after the bye week.

Michigan State acting head coach Harlon Barnett was asked about the quarterback situation during his weekly radio show on Thursday, and he didn’t definitively state it’s Kim’s job as he’s done before. Barnett said it’s an open competition with all of the quarterbacks getting looks.

Here’s the exact quote — courtesy of Jake Lyskawa:

Ahead of the Iowa game, there was no doubt that Kim would be the starter and the coaching staff made that clear. However, after another game where Kim threw three interceptions, it’s no longer as clear based on Barnett’s comments.

Michigan State will return to the field next week in a road game at Rutgers. The Spartans must win that game to keep any realistic chance of reaching a bowl game this year.

LSJ’s Graham Couch: Time for MSU football to make a switch at QB

Is it time for the Spartans to make a change at quarterback?

If Michigan State wants to get anything out of this season, the Spartans need to make a change at quarterback. That’s at least what Graham Couch of the Lansing State Journal believes.

Starting quarterback Noah Kim had another shaky performance on Saturday, throwing three interceptions and failing to lead a touchdown drive in the loss at Iowa. It was a third straight tough performance for Kim, and it has many including Couch calling for a change in the starting position.

With a bye week coming up, it would make sense to make the switch now if the Spartans are going to make the change. Katin Houser is the backup who would be expected to step in as the starter.

MSU football to start QB Noah Kim vs. Iowa on Saturday

Despite a pair of tough outings the past two weeks, Michigan State will continue to roll with Noah Kim as its starting quarterback.

Despite a pair of tough outings the past two weeks, Michigan State will continue to roll with Noah Kim as its starting quarterback.

On Monday, Michigan State acting head coach Harlon Barnett confirmed the Spartans will stick with Kim as the starter for this week’s matchup against Iowa. This is the first road game of the year for the Spartans and will mark Kim’s first career start on the road.

Kim got off to a fast start this year for the Spartans but has since struggled once the competition got harder. In the last two games against Washington and Maryland, Kim has completed less than 50 percent of his passes for 326 yards, one touchdown and three interceptions.

Kim will need to respond with a strong performance against Iowa’s always solid defense in this week’s road test. If he doesn’t, Michigan State will surely lose its third straight game.

MSU head coach Mel Tucker updates starting QB battle during Big Ten media days

MSU will be looking for a new starting quarterback this fall, and that’s certainly something fans have their eyes on entering the season

Michigan State is looking for a new starting quarterback, and that’s certainly something fans have their eyes on entering the season.

Spartans head coach Mel Tucker took part in Big Ten media days on Wednesday, and he was asked about the battle for the starting spot between Noah Kim and Katin Houser. As he typically does, Tucker didn’t provide too many details, but he provided an update with fall camp opening next week.

See what Tucker had to say about the position battle in the video below courtesy of Spartans Illustrated:

MSU QB Noah Kim put on ‘breakout watch’ from popular college football Twitter account

Do you think Noah Kim will be a breakout star for Michigan State football this fall?

Could Noah Kim be a breakout star for Michigan State football this fall? One popular college football Twitter account thinks its a possibility.

Kim will be battling it out with Katin Houser for the Spartans’ starting quarterback spot this fall, but NCAAF Nation believes Kim has the ability to be a breakout player for Michigan State. NCAAF Nation — who has more than 80,000 followers on Twitter — listed Kim on their “breakout watch” list and stated he’s a player they are “expecting big things from this fall.”

Kim has yet to start a game in college and lacks a ton of game experience. But he has been someone who has gotten a ton of buzz this past spring and is clearly a reason why former starting quarterback Payton Thorne elected to leave for Auburn.

Kim still has to win the starting job this fall, but I’m also excited to see what he can do on the field this fall. He brings a dual-threat ability that will add a dynamic to the Spartans’ offense that we haven’t seen in awhile. So as NCAAF Nation stated in the tweet below — remember the name:

National college football reporter gives praise to Noah Kim following MSU spring game

MSU quarterback Noah Kim turned some heads during the Spartans’ final spring practice on Saturday

Michigan State quarterback Noah Kim turned some heads during the Spartans’ final spring practice on Saturday, including Bruce Feldman of The Athletic.

Feldman took to Twitter to give some praise to Kim following the Spartans’ spring event on Saturday. Feldman — who is a national college football reporter and well respected in the industry — stated Kim looked “pretty impressive” for the Spartans on Saturday.

The comment itself isn’t necessarily high-praise but it’s noteworthy anytime a major college football reporter like Feldman is taking notice of your ability. Especially on a day that included spring games for numerous major programs, including Ohio State, Penn State and Texas.

Kim appeared in four games last year, completing 14 of 19 passes for 174 yards and three touchdowns.

Kim is in the midst of a position battle for the starting quarterback spot after serving as the backup last year. Following Saturday’s event, it appears he and returning starter Payton Thorne are relatively close in the battle, with Katin Houser following behind in third.

MSU football starting QB position is ‘open competition’, Mel Tucker says on Monday

It’s an “open competition” for the Michigan State football starting quarterback position

It’s an “open competition” for the Michigan State football starting quarterback position.

With spring practice beginning this week, Spartans head coach Mel Tucker met with media on Monday and one of the offseason’s biggest topics was brought up — how will he be assessing the starting quarterback position? Well, after a lackluster year in 2022, returning starter Payton Thorne is going to need to re-earn his role as QB1 apparently.

Tucker considers it an “open competition” between Thorne and the other quarterbacks — notably Noah Kim and Katin Houser — and that whoever wins the role has to lead, take command and be efficient.

Here’s the full quote from Tucker:

Thorne has started all 25 games for Michigan State the previous two seasons, leading the Spartans to a Peach Bowl in 2021 but then following it up with a losing record in 2022. Not all of last year’s failures fell on Thorne’s shoulders, but his inconsistent play certainly had fans calling for a change at that position heading into the offseason.

Houser redshirted last year but as a former four-star elite recruit in the 2022 class, he has garnered a lot of praise from fans to replace Thorne. It sounds like he’ll get his chance this spring.
