MSU’s Payton Thorne lands in top half of 247Sports’ Big Ten post-spring QB rankings

See where Payton Thorne ranks amongst Big Ten quarterbacks heading into the 2023 season

Payton Thorne is in the midst of a position battle for the starting quarterback spot at Michigan State — but that doesn’t mean he still isn’t one of the best in the league.

Brad Crawford of 247Sports released a batch of post-spring quarterback rankings this week, and Thorne comes is listed in the upper half of the league.

Thorne is battling with Noah Kim and Katin Houser for the starting quarterback spot for the 2023 season. Thorne has started each of the Spartans 25 games over the past two seasons, throwing for more than 6,000 yards and 46 touchdowns.

So where does Thorne rank amongst his Big Ten peers? See where Crawford ranks Thorne below:

MSU football starting QB position is ‘open competition’, Mel Tucker says on Monday

It’s an “open competition” for the Michigan State football starting quarterback position

It’s an “open competition” for the Michigan State football starting quarterback position.

With spring practice beginning this week, Spartans head coach Mel Tucker met with media on Monday and one of the offseason’s biggest topics was brought up — how will he be assessing the starting quarterback position? Well, after a lackluster year in 2022, returning starter Payton Thorne is going to need to re-earn his role as QB1 apparently.

Tucker considers it an “open competition” between Thorne and the other quarterbacks — notably Noah Kim and Katin Houser — and that whoever wins the role has to lead, take command and be efficient.

Here’s the full quote from Tucker:

Thorne has started all 25 games for Michigan State the previous two seasons, leading the Spartans to a Peach Bowl in 2021 but then following it up with a losing record in 2022. Not all of last year’s failures fell on Thorne’s shoulders, but his inconsistent play certainly had fans calling for a change at that position heading into the offseason.

Houser redshirted last year but as a former four-star elite recruit in the 2022 class, he has garnered a lot of praise from fans to replace Thorne. It sounds like he’ll get his chance this spring.

College Sports Wire: Ranking returning Big Ten quarterbacks by production

See where MSU’s Payton Thorne ranks in returning production amongst Big Ten quarterbacks

Spring ball is creeping closer and closer, which means we can start to look ahead to the 2023 season.

Michigan State is one of only a few schools in the Big Ten that is returning its starting quarterback. Payton Thorne returns as the expected starter in the fall. Thorne is entering his third season as the starting quarterback — although some believe Katin Houser will compete for the starting gig as well.

If Thorne does win the starting job again this fall, he will rank as one of the best Big Ten signal-caller in terms of returning production. But how high on that list is he?

Best photos from Michigan State football’s loss at Washington on Saturday

Check out some of the best photos from MSU’s loss at Washington on Saturday night

Michigan State failed their first tough test of the 2022 season with a disappointing loss at Washington on Saturday night.

The Spartans fell into a hole early and were never able to climb back out, falling to the Huskies, 39-28. The final score wasn’t as close as the game truly was with Michigan State scoring the final two touchdowns to make it a two-possession final score.

Former Indiana Hoosiers quarterback Michael Penix Jr. shredded the Spartans secondary with 397 yards and four touchdowns on Saturday for the Huskies. The Huskies wracked up more than 500 total yards in the victory.

Before shifting our focus to next week’s Big Ten opener against Minnesota, here are some of the best photos from Saturday night in Seattle:

See where MSU’s Payton Thorne lands in Athlon Sports’ 2022 starting quarterback rankings

Michigan State returns quarterback Payton Thorne for his second year as the starter, and that is one reason why some are high on the Spartans entering the 2022 season. But where does he ranks compared to his peers in the Big Ten and on the national level?

I have Thorne as one of the top quarterbacks in the league entering this season and would rank him in the top 25 nationally. However, Steve Lassan at Athlon Sports feels differently about the Spartans’ starting signal caller.

See where Lassan has Thorne and the rest of the Big Ten starting quarterbacks in his position ranking for the upcoming 2022 season:

MSU QB Payton Thorne named on Davey O’Brien Award Preseason Watch List

Michigan State quarterback Payton Thorne has been named to the Dave O’Brien Award Preseason Watch List

Michigan State quarterback Payton Thorne has been named to the Dave O’Brien Award Preseason Watch List as one of the top quarterbacks in the country.

The award revealed its preseason watch list on Tuesday, with Thorne being one of 35 signal callers to make the list. The other Big Ten quarterbacks included are Sean Clifford of Penn State, Aidan O’Connell of Purdue, C.J. Stroud of Ohio State and Taulia Tagovailoa of Maryland.

Thorne threw for a school-record 27 touchdown passes last year and also had more than 3,000 passing yards. This will be his second season as the starting quarterback of the Spartans so expectations are even higher for Thorne in 2022.
