Michigan State is looking for a new starting quarterback, and that’s certainly something fans have their eyes on entering the season.

Spartans head coach Mel Tucker took part in Big Ten media days on Wednesday, and he was asked about the battle for the starting spot between Noah Kim and Katin Houser. As he typically does, Tucker didn’t provide too many details, but he provided an update with fall camp opening next week.

Michigan State head coach Mel Tucker has been named to a prestigious award’s watch list for the 2023 season

Michigan State head coach Mel Tucker has been named to a prestigious award’s watch list for the 2023 season.

The Dodd Trophy released its preseason watch list this week, and Tucker was one of 21 coaches to crack the list. The Dodd Trophy is annually presented to the coach of the year in college football.

Only four other Big Ten coaches were included on this list: Ryan Day of Ohio State, Kirk Ferentz of Iowa, P.J. Fleck of Minnesota and Jim Harbaugh of Michigan. Surprisingly, James Franklin of Penn State and Luke Fickell of Wisconsin were not included.

Tucker is entering his fourth season with the Spartans, with an overall record of 18-14. He will be trying to steer the Spartans back into a bowl game this season after a disappointing 5-7 record last year.

Analyzing where Mel Tucker, rest of Big Ten land in CBS Sports’ coaches rankings

The annual tradition of ranking college football coaches has arrived

The annual tradition of ranking college football coaches has arrived.

CBS Sports has released their annual rankings for every power five head coach, and that included Michigan State’s Mel Tucker — who saw a notable drop from last year’s rankings. But how does Tucker compare to his peers in the Big Ten and is his fall justified?

I take a look at where every Big Ten coach landed in CBS Sports’ rankings and also offer my thoughts if the ranking is too high, low or just about right below:

MSU’s Mel Tucker left off 247Sports’ top 35 coaches list

Michigan State football head coach Mel Tucker is left off 247Sports’ top 35 coaches list

Things can change very fast in the world of college football.

A year ago, Michigan State head coach Mel Tucker was considered one of the hottest up-and-coming coaches in the game. However, one bad year and the he’s no longer considered one of the top 35 coaches in all of college football, according to Brad Crawford of 247Sports.

Crawford released his top 35 coaches in college football rankings earlier this week, and Tucker wasn’t on the list. Notable Big Ten coaches on his list included Michigan’s Jim Harbaugh (No. 3), Ohio State’s Ryan Day (No. 6), Wisconsin’s Luke Fickell (No. 9), Penn State’s James Franklin (No. 11), Minnesota’s P.J. Fleck (No. 31) and Iowa’s Kirk Ferentz (No. 32).

Tucker has had mixed results in his time at Michigan State with an overall record of 18-14 but anyone who follows the program understands the challenging rebuild he inherited when taking over in 2020. Tucker turned some heads last year when he took Michigan State to 11-2 and a Peach Bowl victory but this past season was extremely disappointing for the Spartans who finished 5-7 and missed reaching a bowl game.

Tucker not being included on this list doesn’t come as a surprise to me. But I believe he shouldn’t be too far off the list when you consider the amount of success he’s already experienced in relation to the situation he took over a few years ago.

MSU football’s chances of receiving a bowl bid took a big hit on Thursday

If they haven’t already, Michigan State fans can now turn their focus to something other than football

Michigan State fans can now turn their focus to something other than football.

The Spartans finished the 2022 regular season 5-7 and one win short of automatically locking up a bowl bid. However, entering this week there was still an outside chance of the Spartans earning a bowl bid if a few things fell their way. You can read up on those conditions by clicking here.

Well, things haven’t landed in the Spartans’ favor and as of today it seems essentially impossible for Michigan State to receive a bowl bid. On Wednesday, Brett McMurphy of the Action Network reported that UNLV would accept a bowl bid if offered and with the Rebels ahead of the Spartans in the APR tie-breaker, that meant one less bowl bid available. Then, on Thursday, McMurphy reported that New Mexico State has received a bowl waiver at 5-6 and are officially bowl eligible over any 5-7 teams — such as the Spartans.

So what’s this mean for the Spartans? Well, there’s two bowl bids up for grabs and at least three teams ahead of the Spartans in the APR tiebreaker — Rice, UNLV and Auburn. The Rebels will reportedly accept the bowl bid offer so really there’s only one spot available.

Additionally, Buffalo will play Akron on Friday as a double-digit favorite. If the Bulls win, then they’ll be 6-6 on the season and also bowl eligible. So if that’s the case, then they’ll grab the final bowl bid and effectively end the Spartans’ year.

With all of that being said, here’s how Michigan State could still get a bowl bid offer:

  • Buffalo losses to Akron

AND

  • Rice and Auburn turn down their bowl bid offer

That seems very unlikely, and thus, it seems pretty clear the Spartans’ season is over. It won’t be official until bowl games are announced on Sunday, but I wouldn’t expect Michigan State to be getting an offer after the recent developments.
