4 moves the Saints should make after signing Tyrann Mathieu

With the 2022 draft behind them and a few roster needs remaining, here are 4 moves the Saints should make after signing Tyrann Mathieu:

We’re moving into the next phase of the New Orleans Saints offseason, with a small crowd of first-years and tryout players converging on the practice facility soon for rookie minicamps. And with the 2023 compensatory draft picks deadline behind them, the Saints have started making moves — a big one being the arrival of Tyrann Mathieu, a hometown hero and Pro Bowl safety who should do a lot to help replace the leadership New Orleans lost when Malcolm Jenkins retired earlier this year.

But that’s just the beginning. With plenty of free agents still waiting to see where they’ll be playing in 2022, the Saints are well-positioned to get more help ahead of training camp. They should still rank among league leaders in salary cap space once Mathieu’s contract is on the books. Here are four moves we’d like to see the Saints make as we move into the summer:

The NFL’s legal tampering period opens at 11 a.m. CT on Monday, March 14, with deals becoming official at the start of the new league year at 3 p.m. CT on Wednesday, March 16. During this period, agreements can be made in principle and we’ll start to get an idea of where players are expected to head for at least the 2022 season.

For the New Orleans Saints, the next couple of days may be more about the team learning whether or not top free agents like Terron Armstead, Marcus Williams, and Jameis Winston will depart. Though it is reasonable to expect the Saints to potentially be in the mix earlier than usual with their own signings as well. Especially if their pending free agents begin to fly off the board early.

It will be a fast-paced and busy week for Saints fans so keep up with all the moves here in our live-updated Saints free agency tracker.

Saints complete 14 last-minute roster moves, sign free agents before Dolphins game

The New Orleans Saints brought in a wave of reinforcements to their COVID-19-depleted roster ahead of kickoff with the Miami Dolphins, elevating most of their practice squad and signing a couple of free agents for Monday night’s game. Here’s what you need to know about every last-minute roster move:

Tuesday’s update to the New Orleans Saints injury report included a couple of roster moves, with two young players going on injured reserve: tight end Adam Trautman, recovering from a knee injury, and left tackle Landon Young, who is expected to undergo season-ending foot surgery.

And a couple of players who were let go last week in wide receiver Kevin White and cornerback Ken Crawley. Let’s run through the list:

The New Orleans Saints are continuing to churn their depth chart at defensive tackle and running back, with veteran players Montravius Adams and Lamar Miller released on Tuesday. Adams will test the waiver wire while Miller was cut from the practice squad.

Adams played 16 snaps in last week’s game with the Tennessee Titans after being inactive a week earlier. He’s been released and re-signed a time or two already this season so it’s possible he returns in some capacity, possibly to the practice squad.

Other defensive tackles under contract right now include David Onyemata, Shy Tuttle, and Malcolm Roach, with Albert Huggins and Josiah Bronson on the practice squad. Of that group only Onyemata and Tuttle have played every game since Onyemata returned from his early-season suspension in Week 7.

As for Miller: he hasn’t played a down for the Saints since signing with their practice squad a few weeks ago despite injuries to Alvin Kamara, Ty Montgomery, and Tony Jones Jr. New Orleans also signed free agent running back Josh Adams to the practice squad recently so they may have felt two reserve players was too many.

Kamara could return to play this week though we won’t know much about his and Montgomery’s status until Wednesday’s injury report is released. Jones is eligible to return from injured reserve whenever he is healthy, but Mark Ingram and Dwayne Washington should continue to hold it down.

More roster moves are expected with veteran kicker Brett Maher signing with the Saints practice squad and a group of receivers trying out on Tuesday. Check back here at Saints Wire for the latest changes.

Saints bring back veteran kicker Brett Maher to the practice squad

Saints fans wanted a different kicker, and now they’ve got one: the team is signing Brett Maher to its practice squad

Well, alright. ESPN’s Mike Triplett first reported Tuesday that the New Orleans Saints will sign free agent kicker Brett Maher to their practice squad. The move follows some struggles for rookie Brian Johnson, who missed a pair of extra point attempts in last week’s 23-21 loss to the Tennessee Titans.

Maher was the first kicker the Saints signed to fill in for injured Pro Bowler Wil Lutz this season, but he suffered a groin injury in pregame warmups before their first preseason matchup with the Baltimore Ravens. Maher went on injured reserve soon after and was later released with an injury settlement. He can be elevated from the practice squad twice this season before the Saints must sign him to the active roster to continue playing, assuming he unseats Johnson.

Here’s what I wrote of Maher when he first signed with the Saints back in August:

“Maher, 31, first entered the NFL as a punter back in 2013 and has bounced all around ever since, working as a placekicker full-time in 2014. He’s spent time with six different NFL teams (twice with the Jets and Cowboys, plus stops in Washington, Cleveland, Houston, and Arizona) and three CFL teams over the years, though his only extended action came with Dallas.

He’s connected on 49 of 66 career field goal tries (74.2%) and missed just once on 69 extra-point attempts in 29 games. Maher also singlehandedly won the first victory in the Ottawa Redblacks’ franchise history by making all six field goals in an 18-17 surprise. So we’ve got that going for us.”

The Saints have had a carousel of kickers move in and out of the building this season, ranging from Lutz and Johnson to Maher and Aldrick Rosas. Now they’ve turned again to Maher (who will turn 32 next Sunday, when the Saints kick off with the Philadelphia Eagles). In-season kicking competitions are rare, but not unheard of. Hopefully he can be an upgrade.

The New Orleans Saints added a couple of players to the mix for this week’s game roster, bringing up two veterans from the practice squad while activating another from injured reserve, per the daily NFL transactions wire.

That puts them at 52 of 53 spots filled (practice squad elevations don’t count towards it), suggesting more players are working towards returning from injured reserve in the days ahead.

Meanwhile, the New York Giants added to their too-thin receiving corps by calling up John Ross from injured reserve. New York is down two of its top three receivers (Sterling Shepard and Darius Slayton) so he could lend a hand.
