Well, that’s one way to do it.

Plenty of college football teams go into a season still trying to resolve a quarterback competition, but few have gone to the lengths that Michigan Wolverines head coach Jim Harbaugh intends to address his own.

In a statement put out by Michigan football’s official Twitter, Harbaugh said that his Wolverines are “not ready to say who [their] starting quarterback is”. It goes on to clarify that Cade McNamara, who started 14 games in the team’s run to the College Football Playoff last season, will be under center when they host Colorado State in Week 1. The following week, challenger J.J. McCarthy will get his turn to start against Hawaii.

Where such competitions are often considered on a drive-by-drive or quarter-by-quarter basis, both McNamara and McCarthy will get a sixty-minute audition against a pair of Mountain West defenses that, from Harbaugh’s implied perspective, will be roughly as productive as each other in 2022.

McNamara completed 210 of his 327 pass attempts for 2,576 yards, 15 touchdowns and six interceptions last year, leading the Wolverines to their first outright Big Ten championship since 2003. McCarthy, by contrast, didn’t start but saw action in 11 different games throughout 2021, completing 34-of-59 passes for 516 yards, five touchdowns and two interceptions.

UNLV Football: Doug Brumfield To Start At Quarterback Vs. Idaho State, Per Reports

The Rebels’ dual-threat quarterback has reportedly won the starting assignment for UNLV’s season opener against the Idaho State Bengals.

Will Brumfield break out?

[mm-video type=playlist id=01fb7dafw2b08817yr player_id=none image=https://mwwire.com/wp-content/plugins/mm-video/images/playlist-icon.png]

A one-time transfer portal candidate, Doug Brumfield returns to UNLV ready for the 2022 season. But can he return to lead the Rebels to relevance?

Headed into a Saturday afternoon showdown with the Idaho State Bengals, Rebels head coach Marcus Arroyo has remained steadfast in not naming a starting quarterback ahead of kickoff. He has also spoken often of how this 2022 squad needs to learn from last year’s campaign, a 2-10 record that included six one-score losses, but also two wins in its last four games.

Now, however, with the news a starter has been named, first broken by Joe Arrigo of Franchise Sports Media, UNLV’s QB1 merits a closer look.

A 6’-5, 215 lb. quarterback, Doug Brumfield is a dual-threat quarterback that can offer options to the Rebels offense. With running back Aidan Collins – an incoming transfer from Louisville – in the backfield, expect Brumfield to be featured in a renewed rushing attack for UNLV, with the potential to mix in passing plays and keep defenses guessing. Wide receivers Kyle Williams and Ricky White are expected to be Brumfield’s main targets, and the offense as a whole will need to show improvement if the Rebels are to remain competitive throughout the season.

Idaho State vs. UNLV: Game Preview, How to Watch, Odds, Prediction

Brumfield has shown potential to lead the Rebels, including a comeback in a heart-breaking loss to Eastern Washington in last year’s season opener. He has the ability to move the offense as a passer or a rusher, but fans and critics alike will be looking for an evolution in the Rebels offense. If Brumfield can find success leading an offense featuring more run-pass options or big plays out of play action, there’s a chance this offense with a more pro-style approach can bring the kind of success that surprises a few teams this season.

But before fans can claim success, there are questions for Brumfield and the offense overall. A struggling offense at times will need Brumfield to buy time to allow receivers to get downfield. Trying to make too many big plays can also put Brumfield himself at risk, and after missing several games last season due to injury, there will inevitably be concerns with durability.

It can be said that Doug Brumfield embodies a lot of the character that defines this UNLV squad; after a tough season last year, and an offseason filled with questions, this 2022 is an opportunity for Brumfield and the Rebels to find a few more wins together. Easier said than done, but many of the pieces are in place and the season is upon us. Doug Brumfield now has an opportunity to lead the Rebels to greater success as a team to be reckoned with in the Mountain West Conference.

Week 0 Mountain West Football: Best Bets

A look at the Mountain West betting odds for Week 0

What are the oddsmakers saying about these match ups?

Late in the week we will look at odds and recent lines and make our best picks and bets. Odds courtesy of Vegas Insider.

It’s time for College Football to start again. We’ve reached week zero and it’s time to get your wallets ready. There are five Mountain West games to look at this week and let’s see if we can get off to a good start this year.

idaho state @ unlv (-26.5, O/U 53)

The over feels like the safest bet here. Both of Idaho State’s games last year against FBS competition had a total of at least 59. If you want to feel truly adventurous and you feel like Marcus Arroyo has turned a corner, the spread seems like the pick for you. Although, you should be weary of it as it has moved 5 points since it opened at -21.5 for UNLV.

Pick: Over

uconn @ utah state (-26.5, O/U 59.5)

Utah State is more than likely going to take a step back this season, just by virture of the amount of talent they lose on both sides of the ball. UCONN just lost their defensive coordinator for “personal reasons,” but they return a ton of production and bring in a four-star transfer recruit at quarterback.

Pick: UCONN +26.5

wyoming @ illinois (-14, O/U 43.5)

This is probably the toughest pick of the weekend. You think under with both teams being run heavy offenses, but their run defenses were poor last year. This isn’t going to be an air raid shooutout, but it could turn into a barn burner on the ground. The over feels like the safest play here.

Pick: Over

Nevada @ New Mexico State (-8.5, O/U 48)

Both teams are bringing in new coaches (Ken Wilson at Nevada and Jerry Kill at New Mexico State) who are changing the identity of their respective teams. Nevada is turning from an air raid offense to a run first offense and New Mexico State is implementing an offense that wants the QB to extend plays. Look for some early offensive trouble from both squads and the score to reflect that.

Pick: Under

vanderbilt @ Hawai’i (+9.5, O/U 54.5)

My “what are you thinking” pick of the week. Hawaii is in an almost complete overhaul with new head coach Timmy Chang bringing in 53 new players. Vanderbilt is also in the midst of a rebuild, but they have a year headstart. The run-and-shoot feels like it’s going to make a serious comeback and Hawai’i could start off on the right foot.

Pick: Hawai’i +9.5

Wyoming Football: First Look At The Illinois Fighting Illini

The Wyoming Cowboys open the season Saturday in Champaign, Illinois against the Fighting Illini out of the Big Ten. The Cowboys have historically struggled against teams from the Big Ten with only one previous win against a Big Ten team in school history, a road victory at Wisconsin back in 1986. This will also be only the 12th game in Wyoming history played in the month of August. The Cowboys are 6-5 in the month of August, with the most recent August game coming in 2019 when the Cowboys upset Missouri in Laramie.

Wyoming comes into the season with a lot of questions, especially after losing several key players to the transfer portal. Rest assured, though, the recipe for success for the Cowboys will be the same as it has been throughout the Craig Bohl era: A strong running game and a stout defense.

The Cowboys meet an Illinois team who will try to do the exact same thing. In a game like this on the road against a Power 5 opponent, the Cowboys will have their hands full, but here is how Wyoming can get back to Laramie with the win.

Three Keys to a Wyoming Victory

Control the line of scrimmage

As mentioned earlier, Wyoming and Illinois are two teams likely to have similar game plans. If the Cowboys want to win this game, it will come down to how well they can control the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball. The Cowboys have one of the best running backs in the conference returning in Titus Swen, who can be a game changer if he has performs well against the Illini. Last season, Wyoming had a 4-1 record in games where Swen had 50 or more rushing yards, and he averaged 5.9 yards per carry throughout the entire year.

With the increased load that comes with Xazavian Valladay’s transfer to Arizona State, Swen should have plenty of opportunities to make his presence felt. The Cowboys as a team averaged 211 yards per game on the ground while allowing 182 yards per game on the ground to opponents. Illinois counters this by rushing for an average of 173 yards per game and only allowing 151 yards.

However, Illinois returns a defense that was one of the best in the country last year and only allowed 22 points per game to their opponents. The Illini hope to make it hard for the Cowboys specifically with DT Keith Randolph and LB Tariq Barnes. Randolph, in particular, can make the day long for the Cowboys if he can clog the running lanes.

Limit mistakes and turnovers

Week 0 games often come down to whoever can win the turnover battle and has the fewest penalties. Last year, Wyoming turned the ball over on average 1.1 times per game while forcing 1.4 turnovers per game. The Illini had almost the exact opposite split: turning the ball over 1.4 times per game while forcing one turnover per game. The Illini were penalized five times per game for an average of 53 yards per game, while the Cowboys averaged five penalties per game for 45 yards.

Passing game will be the X-factor

It is no secret that the Wyoming Cowboys are a run-first football team, but the Cowboy’s passing game over the past several years led by Sean Chambers and Levi Williams has been dismal at worst and inconsistent at best. The Cowboys hope to change that this year with a whole new quarterback room. The Cowboys brought in three new players this off-season, transfers Andrew Peasley and Evan Svoboda plus incoming freshman Caden Becker.

As of today, Peasley is projected as the starting quarterback but no one has been officially named as the starter, but Svoboda and Becker should be able to give Peasley a run for his money as the starter. Under a new quarterback, the Cowboys passing game should be interesting, and if the Cowboys can add an efficient aerial attack, they could have a special season coming.

[lawrence-related id=48312]

Prediction:

This game is shaping up to be a low-scoring slugfest, and the winning team will be the one who dominates the time of possession and the line of scrimmage. I think the Cowboys sneak back to Laramie with the upset win and start the season 1-0.

Wyoming 24, Illinois 21

Air Force Football 2022: Predicting the Falcons Win Total

How many Win’s are on the 2022 Schedule?

Contact/Follow @PSeanU1 & @MWCwire

We are officially within striking distance of the start of the 2022 college football season! While Air Force isn’t participating in the Week 0 festivities, a quarter of future Falcon opponents are on Saturday’s slate. If you want to do some early studying of the competition; Wyoming, Utah State, UNLV and Nevada will all be in action this weekend.

In addition those teams in action this weekend, there are a number of very difficult matchups awaiting Air Force on the schedule. Interestingly enough, Air Force is one of only six teams favored in every game this season. If you missed it, we took a closer look at this phenomena here.

It’s safe to say that word is out; Air Force is good. In fact, the Falcons could be down right special this season. But even a very good team would have to be accompanied by a lot of fortune to navigate such a schedule unblemished. As we mentioned, the reality of an undefeated season is not out of the realm of possibility, but let’s pump the breaks on those expectations for a moment and take a closer look at who awaits Troy Calhoun’s current crop of cadets.

How’s the Schedule Shape Up?

The grind of an entire college football season is filled with twists and turns. There are always going to be surprise teams, like the Utah State Aggies of last year. Just as there are the conference stalwarts like San Diego State and Boise State. All three of which are on this years Air Force schedule, and all three are going to require masterful performances to win.

Then there are the regular out of conference matchups with Army and Navy which, by the way, are routinely the most physical and emotionally invested games on the calendar. Army in particular has been nothing short of a regularly appointed fist fight. Unfortunately for Air Force, it’s a fight they’ve struggled in of late. We don’t need to recount the Commander-in-Chief’s Trophy drought, which has been ongoing since 2016 as evidence of the challenge this round robin poses.

We could go on with hyperbole laden rhetoric about nearly every game on the schedule, but you get the gist of it, this is a difficult slate.

The Floor (8-4), Ceiling (11-1) and Somewhere in Between (9-3)

Outside of games against Northern Iowa, UNLV and New Mexico, there aren’t any other games on this schedule that would be completely shocking if Air Force were to lose. Sitting here today, the Falcons will be favored and should win their matchups with Wyoming, Colorado, Navy, Nevada and Colorado State. But again, those teams will likely be formidable opponents. Of this eight team collective, Air Force should win at least seven.

As suggested earlier, the mettle of Air Force is really going to be tested against Army, Utah State, Boise State and San Diego State. While it’s been literally over a decade since the Falcons have beaten the Aztecs, it feels like it’s been just as long since they’ve bested Army. This 2022 Air Force team should split these four, winning two.

If your doing the math as we truck along here, were talking about an Air Force team that should be expected to win nine games. The regression from that expectation to what this team’s absolute floor for the season is marginal. There is nothing short of a disaster that should keep this roster and staff from winning eight games at minimum.

Now the ceiling. I know they are favored in every game here in the pre-season. The reality is, they COULD beat any team on this schedule. But a more realistic ceiling is going to have them sitting at 11-1. That stretch of opponents between Army, Utah State, Boise State and San Diego State is daunting.

When you are talking about an 11 win ceiling, or an eight win floor, you are talking about a good football team. In this year’s Air Force football team, your talking about a group that could win the Mountain West Conference and legitimately push for that New Years Six Bowl invite if the cards fall just right.

I fully expect this team to deliver another very good season. With the teams on the calendar, the 9-3 regular season record that I believe will result is an accomplishment. That record still leaves both Division and thus Conference Title aspirations alive. But this team could be really special, let’s see if they can be circa 1998 Air Force special.

Standout signal-callers.

Watch list season popped back up into the college football consciousness today with the unveiling of the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award watch list. Given annually to the nation’s top upperclassman quarterback, four players from the Mountain West appear here among 76 represented schools.

Boise State’s Hank Bachmeier, Utah State’s Logan Bonner, San Diego State’s Braxton Burmeister, and Fresno State’s Jake Haener represent the conference. Bachmeier battled through injuries for most of 2021 while posting career-best numbers — a 62.8% completion rate, 3,080 passing yards and 20 touchdowns against eight interceptions — while Burmeister did the same at Virginia Tech before transferring to the Aztecs this offseason. The former Hokie accounted for 206.2 yards of total offense per game in 2021 and threw for 14 touchdowns while running for two more in 12 games.

Haener, meanwhile, was named as the conference’s preseason offensive player of the year last month after leading the Bulldogs to a ten-win season last year, completing 67.1% of his passes for 4,096 yards and 33 touchdowns against nine interceptions. Lastly, Bonner set a number of new single-season program records while leading the Aggies to the Mountain West championship, posting a 61.3% completion rate with 3,628 passing yards and 36 touchdowns against 12 interceptions.

Last year’s Golden Arm Award winner was Pitt’s Kenny Pickett.

The biggest picture of all.

There are a number of preseason projection systems which take aim at identifying the teams most likely succeed ahead of a season, from Bill Connelly’s SP+ metric to Brian Fremeau’s FEI, but only one includes every single system out there to provide a snapshot of the season from week to week.

The Massey Composite includes 30 different rankings, not just SP+ and FEI but also Sagarin, ESPN’s Football Power Index, old BCS-related rankings like Billingsley, and many more. With so many different perspectives on the college football landscape, how does the Mountain West compare to the rest of the country?

  • 34. Boise State
  • 40. Air Force
  • 50. Fresno State
  • 51. San Diego State
  • 61. Utah State
  • 84. Nevada
  • 92. Wyoming
  • 97. San Jose State
  • 106. Hawaii
  • 107. Colorado State
  • 117. UNLV
  • 126. New Mexico

While the combined rankings may not contain too many surprises, that doesn’t mean there’s an overwhelming consensus. For instance, four different Mountain West teams — Boise State, Air Force, San Diego State, and Utah State — land in the top 25 of at least one ranking within the composite. Conversely, five other teams — Colorado State, Hawaii, Nevada, New Mexico, and UNLV — project as a bottom-ten team somewhere.

You can track the composite from week to week, and look at past combined results, by visiting MasseyRatings.com.

The slate may be a little tougher than expected.

Week 0 is mere days away, so following the unveiling of his final SP+ projections of the off-season earlier this week, ESPN’s Bill Connelly revealed today what the FCS landscape looks like this morning by that same metric, which examines college football’s most efficient teams in a manner that adjusts for opponents and tempo.

  • 8. Northern Iowa — #74 offense, #1 defense
  • 14. Sacramento State — #55 offense, #7 defense
  • 15. Weber State — #32 offense, #18 defense
  • 19. Incarnate Word — #3 offense, #94 defense
  • 28. UT Martin — #34 offense, #30 defense
  • 41. Maine — #30 offense, #65 defense
  • 44. Portland State — #39 offense, #61 defense
  • 64. Duquesne — #44 offense, #89 defense
  • 80. Idaho State — #117 offense, #36 defense
  • 86. Northern Colorado — #90 offense, #76 defense
  • 91. Cal Poly — #57 offense, #102 defense

As a whole, the Big Sky projects to be a fistfight week in and week out with six teams, including Sacramento State and Weber State, in the SP+ top 25. What might be more surprising is that even those teams who were predicted to finish at the bottom of that conference — Portland State, Idaho State, Northern Colorado, and Cal Poly — still project as being more efficient than at least 29 of their FCS peers.

The number one FCS opponent on the docket this year, however, comes from the Missouri Valley Conference. Northern Iowa, who will open 2022 on the road against Air Force, come in at eighth overall on the strength of a defense that, according to Connelly, projects as the FCS’s best. In all, even the Mountain West’s top contenders won’t want to take any of these teams lightly.

Stars galore, plus a couple surprises.

The Senior Bowl is one of the crucial events that bridges the long winter between the end of college football season and the NFL Draft, which makes the revelation of its 2022 watch list a point of attention.

Mountain West Football: 56 Players Named To Shrine Bowl 1000 List

Six different Mountain West teams are represented on the Senior Bowl watch list, led by the Boise State Broncos with six total selections and the Fresno State Bulldogs with four. Air Force, San Diego State, and San Jose State each have two players while Nevada has one.

The more interesting details involve those included who might come as something of a surprise, like Falcons wide receiver David Cormier and Boise State cornerback Markel Reed. One team noticeably absent from this list is Utah State, the defending conference champions who could reasonably have landed a couple of athletes, like quarterback Logan Bonner and running back Calvin Tyler Jr., on this list.

Air Force
  • David Cormier, WR
  • Kyle Patterson, TE
Boise State
  • Hank Bachmeier, QB
  • Caleb Biggers, CB
  • Divine Obichere, DL
  • John Ojukwu, OT
  • Markel Reed, CB
