Mock Draft Roundup Monday 2.0: Who analysts are sending to Chargers

Get familiar with some of the players experts think the Chargers will target in the 2023 NFL draft.

Who are some players experts think the Chargers will target in the 2023 NFL draft?

Get acquainted with a few names in the second installment of the Chargers 2023 NFL Mock Draft Roundup Monday.

Selection (No. 21 overall): Jaxon Smith-Njigba, WR, Ohio State

Expert: Nate Davis, USA Today

Date of mock draft: February 20 (link)

Analysis: “Are you getting the guy who racked up 347 receiving yards in the 2022 Rose Bowl? Or the guy who missed most of last season with a hamstring injury, which spurred a lot of questions? Maybe both. But with Keenan Allen slowing down and maybe about to be a cap casualty, Smith-Njigba would make an outstanding Robin to Mike Williams’ Batman in this offense.”

Selection (No. 21 overall): Jalin Hyatt, WR, Tennessee

Expert: Daniel Popper, The Athletic

Date of mock draft: February 20 (link)

Analysis: “The Chargers had a need for more speed at receiver last offseason, and they opted not to address it. That decision backfired when injuries struck the offense. They lost their fastest receiver, Jalen Guyton, to a torn ACL in Week 3. Mike Williams and Keenan Allen missed significant time. They did not have the depth to weather those injuries. And they did not have the speed within the receiving group to fully take advantage of Justin Herbert’s arm and consistently threaten opposing defenses in the deep part of the field. Herbert finished 31st among 33 qualified quarterbacks in air yards per attempt, and the Chargers finished 24th in explosive pass rate, according to TruMedia. Part of that was some of the limitations in former offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi’s scheme and play calling. Part of that was a lack of reliable protection from an injured and young offensive line. But part of that, too, was personnel. One easy way to create a more explosive passing attack is to add explosive playmakers. That is exactly what Hyatt is: a receiver with “field-stretching speed, tracking skills and reliable hands,” according to The Athletic’s draft expert Dane Brugler.”

Selection (No. 21 overall): Broderick Jones, OT, Georgia

Selection (No. 55 overall) Darnell Washington, TE, Georgia

Expert: Ryan Wilson, CBS Sports

Date of mock draft: February 20 (link)

Analysis: “Jones had had a strong ’22 campaign for the Bulldogs, where he has faced some of the best defensive players in the country every day at practice for the last two years. He’s not yet a finished product but he has the athleticism and strength to be a difference-maker when he puts it all together.”

Selection (No. 21 overall): Jalin Hyatt, WR, Tennessee

Expert: Chris Trapasso, CBS Sports

Date of mock draft: February 20 (link)

Analysis: “New offensive coordinator Kellen Moore will allow Justin Herbert to push the ball downfield more frequently than the QB did with Joe Lombardi. So it’s time to get Herbert a serious vertical weapon. That’s precisely what Hyatt is.”

Selection (No. 21 overall): Luke Musgrave, TE, Oregon State

Expert: Keith Sanchez, The Draft Network

Date of mock draft: February 20 (link)

Analysis: “Luke Musgrave’s stock is consistently rising throughout the draft process. Musgrave combined with Keenan Allen and Mike Williams will give Justin Herbert a trio of big targets to deliver the ball to.”

Selection (No. 21 overall): Lukas Van Ness, EDGE, Iowa

Selection (No. 55 overall): Darnell Washington, TE, Georgia

Selection (No. 86 overall): Sydney Brown, S, Illinois

Expert: Tankathon.com Staff

Date of mock draft: February 19 (link)

Selection (No. 21 overall): Jordan Addison, WR, USC

Expert: Antonio Morales, The Athletic

Date of mock draft: February 17 (link)

Analysis: “Addison dealt with injuries during his final college season at USC, so his numbers weren’t as prolific as they were when he won the Biletnikoff Award at Pitt in 2021. His talent was still apparent, though. Addison has good speed and is a smooth, technically sound wideout. If Keenan Allen becomes a cap casualty, then the Chargers (and Justin Herbert) could use a talent like Addison.”

Selection (No. 21 overall): Zay Flowers, WR, Boston College

Expert: Ian Cummings, Pro Football Network

Date of mock draft: February 16 (link)

Analysis: “More than anything, the Chargers need more speed and dynamic ability at WR. Zay Flowers has more than enough of both traits. However, what separates him from other smaller receivers is his flexibility and body control, both on the ground and in the air.”

Mock Draft Monday: Samuel Cosmi to Indianapolis?

In this week’s mock draft Monday, we take a look at Jordan Reid’s mock on the Draft Network. Two Longhorn underclassmen are featured.

It time for your weekly mock draft Monday roundup. We start with Jordan Reid of the Draft Network. He released his two-round mock draft that features a pair of currently Longhorns. Both of which are underclassmen which means no Sam Ehlinger featured this week. Reid does however, pick another Sam to be selected.

What Reid says

The team has a glaring hole at corner, but some thought that Anthony Castonzo may call it quits prior to the 2020 season. Even he himself said the thought crept in his mind, but in the end, he wound up signing a two-year, $33 million extension through 2022. It’s logical to think that that season may be his final one. Planning ahead, Chris Ballard takes his heir apparent a year in advance. A redshirt year behind an experienced veteran is a feasible plan entering the league as he must continue to add muscle mass on his frame, strength, and improve his technique as a pass protector.

The Colts might need to find a young quarterback first but also finding someone to protect him is a top priority. When it comes to positions on the football field, your left tackle is in the top five. It might be top two for some organizations. Samuel Cosmi has improved each year and he is looking to prove his worth once again. Cosmi to the Colts does make sense here.

Reid has been one of the more vocal analysts in the NFL Draft community about Joseph Ossai. With that being said it comes as no surprise to see him pop up in this week’s mock draft roundup. Ossai moving to the “Jack” role will suit him as he looks to move to the next level. While he hasn’t shown that pass rush ability we thought we would see, he has the skillset. Also with T.J. Watt lined up on the other side, he would likely get a lot of favorable looks in that defense.

Mock Draft Monday: Sam Cosmi to protect Trevor Lawrence in New York

Every Monday, LonghornsWire looks to round up top mock drafts. This week, CBS Sports has released a mock draft with one UT first-round pick.

Each and every Monday, LonghornsWire looks to round up the top mock drafts. This week, CBS Sports has released its latest mock draft with only one first-round pick for Texas. To no surprise, it is the Longhorns’ starting left tackle, Samuel Cosmi.

When the Seattle traded for All-Pro safety Jamal Adams, the New York Jets acquired the Seahawks’ 2021 first-round pick. With Seattle being one of the top teams in the NFC, CBS Sports projects the Jets’ will make a selection in the bottom five of the first-round.

In much need of offensive line help for current starting quarterback Sam Darnold, Samuel Cosmi is mocked at No. 28. Six total offensive linemen was selected before the current Texas star, including three tackles.

CBS’ Chris Trapasso says Cosmi “glides in pass protection” and ranks him as the No. 2 tackle in the draft. Only Oregon’s Penei Sewell, the mocked No. 1 overall pick to the Cincinnati Bengals, is above the Longhorn.

After the Jets selected Mekhi Becton with the No. 11 pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, Becton and Cosmi would be the tackles of the future in New York. Would they be protecting Sam Darnold for the next decade? Or could the Jets move on and draft another college superstar?

With the Jets off to an 0-2 start, they are considered one of the favorites to end up with a top-three draft pick. CBS Sports projects New York ends up with the No. 2 overall pick, selecting current Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence.

This would leave a quarterback battle between two top-five pick quarterbacks in Lawrence and Darnold.

Darnold, the No. 3 overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, is under contract until the after 2021 season. From there, the Jets will have to decide if they want to pick up his player option. If they do not, he could leave New York one year after Lawrence was selected.

Considered a no doubt, slam dunk quarterback prospect, Lawrence could finally turn the forever-struggling Jets around into a consistent franchise. Already starting with a strong left or right tackle such as Cosmi would fast forward the rebuild even more.

Mock Draft Monday: Texas Longhorns Football

The 2020 NFL Draft is officially this week. In preparation, Draft Wire has released their latest seven-round mock draft with four UT players.

The 2020 NFL Draft is officially this week, as the first round will be held on Thursday. In preparation, Draft Wire and Luke Esterling have released their latest seven-round mock draft. With Texas having four prospects projected to be drafted, Esterling says all four will be drafted in the third round or later.

Here is where they are projected to fall:

  • Brandon Jones at 80 to the Las Vegas Raiders
  • Collin Johnson at 142 to the Washington Redskins
  • Devin Duvernay at 157 to the Baltimore Ravens
  • Malcolm Roach at 174 to the Tennessee Titans

After only having two players drafted in 2018, if Jones, Johnson, Duvernay, and Roach are selected in the draft, it would make the second time in three years Texas had four players selected through the seven rounds. Former linebacker Malik Jefferson is the highest-drafted Longhorn during that time span, going 78th overall.

Once Johnson and Duvernay are drafted, it will be the first time a wide receiver from Texas has been selected since 2013. Marquise Goodwin was selected in the third round by the Buffalo Bills after four seasons in Austin.

Jones remains consistent as the 80th overall pick to the Raiders in Easterling’s mock draft as he also projected the safety to be selected by Las Vegas a couple weeks ago. Jon Gruden’s team needs help at the safety position, even after signing former Dallas Cowboy Jeff Heath in free agency.

The Tennessee Titans are coming off an AFC Championship appearance in which saw them defeat the New England Patriots and Baltimore Colts. In order to make a similar type run, Tennessee could be looking to bolster their defensive line. Drafting Roach, who had eight sacks and 22.5 tackles for loss over his career at Texas, could bring much-needed depth.
