Group of Tigers get drafted on day two

See which Auburn players are heading to the Bigs as day two of the MLB draft continues:

The MLB draft is on its second day, and a new group of Auburn players are headed to The Show.

Tigers reliever [autotag]Blake Burkhalter[/autotag] was the first Auburn player to come off the board, as the Braves selected him in the second round with the 76th overall pick in the draft. More were expected to go during the second day of the draft, though, and that turned out to be exactly the case on Monday when the Tigers saw a group of prospects finally get to hear their name called.

Here is every Auburn player that has been taken on day two so far:

Alabama baseball signee Walter Ford selected by Mariners in 2022 MLB draft

Alabama baseball commit, Walter Ford, was selected by the Seattle Mariners on Sunday in the second round of the 2022 MLB Draft.

Alabama baseball’s 2022 recruiting class could be losing its’ highest-ranked recruit in Walter Ford. Ford was drafted as a compensatory pick (No. 74) in the second round of the 2022 MLB draft on Sunday by the Seattle Mariners.

He had been committed to Alabama since June 30, 2019, and recently signed with the Tide in November. All signs point to Ford forgoing his college eligibility to pursue future professional opportunities with the Mariners.

After being drafted by the Mariners, Ford quickly took to his Twitter account and said “let’s goooooo!! Time to get to work!” With him being such a high-round draft pick, it would be surprising to see the right-handed pitcher opt for Alabama. It isn’t out of the question, but it is unlikely.

Ford played his high school ball at Pace High School in Pace, Florida. During his senior year, he held a 10-2 record on the mound with a 0.90 ERA. In 70 1/3 innings, Ford had 126 strikeouts while allowing just 25 walks. As a result, he was named the 6A Player of the Year.

Ford is ranked as the No. 30 overall recruit, according to Perfect Game. He is just 17 years old and decided to enter the 2022 MLB draft early by re-classifying. It paid off on Sunday when he heard his name called at No. 74 overall to the Seattle Mariners. It will be interesting to track how Ford performs at the professional level.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to follow Alabama baseball and former players finding their way to the Major Leagues.

Clemson’s top baseball signee heard his name called on the second day of the Major League Baseball Draft, though it was much later than expected.

Now the question is will Brock Porter suit up for the Tigers?

Porter was taken in the fourth round by the Texas Rangers, who selected the St. Mary’s Prep (Michigan) School pitcher with the 109th overall pick Monday. Should Porter elect to sign with the Rangers and start his professional career early, he would receive a signing bonus of approximately $560,000, according to MLB.com, which is much less than many expected for what many considered a first-round talent.

The fact that Porter, ranked by MLB.com as the No. 11 overall prospect heading into the draft, fell past the first three rounds could mean his asking price was too high for teams. But teams, particularly those with larger bonus pools, could mix and match their allotted draft money to offer certain players more than slot value, meaning Porter could potentially get more than the 109th pick is generally worth.

A power arm capable of touching 100 miles per hour with his fastball, Porter has signed a National Letter of Intent with the Tigers. As a senior, the 6-foot-4 right-hander threw five no-hitters en route to Gatorade National Player of the Year honors.

The Clemson Insider has learned that Porter has some degree of desire to follow through on his commitment to Clemson, meaning it’s almost certainly going to take an amount far exceeding his slot value to convince him to skip out on college. Now Porter has to make that decision.

Alabama pitcher Connor Prielipp selected in second round of 2022 MLB Draft

Alabama left-handed pitcher Connor Prielipp was chosen No. 48 overall in the 2022 MLB Draft by the Minnesota Twins.

It wasn’t as soon as many baseball experts had anticipated, but Alabama pitcher Connor Prielipp was chosen with the No. 48 overall pick to the Minnesota Twins on Sunday night of the 2022 MLB draft.

It wasn’t the first time that the Wisconsin native had been drafted. After his senior year of high school, the Boston Red Sox chose Prielipp in the 37th round of the 2019 draft. However, instead of pursuing professional opportunities, he chose to attend Alabama. He was ranked as the No. 201 overall recruit in the country, according to Perfect Game.

During his freshman season in Tuscaloosa, he had 21 innings pitched while allowing just five hits and striking out 35 batters. He obtained a 3-0 record with a 0.00 ERA. In a COVID-shortened season, Prielipp pitched merely perfect for Brad Bohannon’s squad. He received First-Team All-American honors from Collegiate Baseball News.

The success didn’t carry over into his sophomore season, however. Prielipp made three appearances on the mound and pitched just seven innings before undergoing Tommy John surgery. He ended the season with a 1-1 record with a 3.86 ERA. After battling an elbow injury and undergoing Tommy John surgery, he decided to not pitch during the 2022 season.

Recently, he chose to throw a bullpen session at the SEC Tournament for MLB scouts. Soon after, he would partake in the MLB Draft Combine that took place in San Diego, California. As a result of his great arm and pitch arsenal, Prielipp was ranked as the No. 25 overall player in this year’s draft class by MLB.com.

On Sunday, he would fall into the second round to the Twins. He became the second pitcher to come from Alabama that has been drafted in the first three rounds over the past two drafts. It will be interesting to see how Prielipp develops in the minor leagues and how he fares when he receives the call to the big leagues.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to cover Alabama baseball and former players making their way to the Major Leagues.

Diamond Hogs lose would-be freshman pitcher to MLB draft

Cole Phillips could still choose to go to Arkansas, though Atlanta will make every attempt to sign him to a pro deal.

Cole Phillips was always a longshot to play for Arkansas even though he committed out of Boerne, Texas.

Phillips, one of the top high-school pitchers in the country, was selected in the second round of the MLB draft Sunday by Atlanta, going 57th overall, five picks ahead of Arkansas pitcher Peyton Pallette, who went to the White Sox.

Phillips underwent Tommy John surgery three months ago and won’t play the rest of the summer even if he decides to join the Braves organization. If Phillips chooses to go to Arkansas, he will draft-eligible after his sophomore season.

He was one of four players with Diamond Hogs connections taken on Sunday. Third baseman Cayden Wallace was the first Arkansas player taken when Kansas City chose him with the No. 49 pick. Second baseman Robert Moore, whose father Dayton is the general manager for Kansas City, went to Milwaukee with the 72nd pick.

Several other Arkansas players are likely to be taken during Monday’s portion of the draft which covers rounds three through 20.

Phillips and the other three Arkansas players selected have until August to decide whether he will sign with Atlanta or attend Arkansas.

Notre Dame Baseball commits goes higher than anticipated in MLB Draft

Congrats young man!

Many of the MLB Draft experts saw this draft as a weak one for pitching, which was enough for them to drop many of the pitching prospects down their boards. When the draft commenced on Sunday night, most of the industry’s best, looked a bit foolish as multiple pitchers were drafted higher than they were mocked.

The same went for Notre Dame Baseball signee Owen Murphy, who was selected by the Atlanta Braves with the 20th overall selection in the first round. The consensus was that Murphy would get drafted early, but not this early, often falling to a team starting around the compensation picks.

The defending World Series Champions went heavy on the pitching side, with each of their first four selections highlighted by Murphy. As for his career with the Irish, at this moment it is unknown what he will do but if I had to guess, we unfortunately won’t ever see Murphy in the Blue and Gold.

Atlanta Braves draft Blake Burkhalter with 76th overall selection

The SEC saves leader will get to stay close to home after being taken by the Atlanta Braves

The SEC’s saves leader from 2022 is staying close to home.

Late Sunday night, Auburn RHP [autotag]Blake Burkhalter[/autotag] was selected in the second round of the Major League Baseball first-year-player draft by the nearby Atlanta Braves, going 76th overall.

Burkhalter joins an elite company, as he is Auburn’s highest drafted relief pitcher since 1993 when Scott Sullivan was drafted with the No. 62 overall pick by the Cincinnati Reds. He is also the third-highest relief pitcher drafted behind Sullivan and Gregg Olson, who went No. 4 overall to the Baltimore Orioles in 1988.

Burkhalter was one of the most dominant pitchers in SEC Baseball during the 2022 season. In 30 appearances, Burkhalter struck out 71 batters while allowing just seven walks and 19 earned runs over a span of 46.1 innings pitched. He also recorded 16 saves, which was the most among SEC relief pitchers, and the second-highest in the nation behind only Tristan Stivors of Texas State, who picked up 18 saves on the season.

By being selected 76th overall, Burkhalter is slotted to earn a bonus of $859,700.

The latest on Clemson’s top signee in the MLB Draft

To the surprise of many, the first two rounds of the Major League Baseball Draft came and went without Clemson’s top signee hearing his name called.

St. Mary’s Prep (Michigan) School standout Brock Porter, who has signed a National Letter of Intent with the Tigers, was widely considered a first-round talent. Some even had the 6-foot-4 right hander, who can touch 100 miles per hour with his fastball, as the top prep arm available. MLB Pipeline ranked him as the No. 11 overall prospect heading into the draft.

Yet 80 picks in, Porter remains on the board despite having no known injury concerns or character issues. Since Sunday night, The Clemson Insider has gathered some intel on the situation that we wanted to pass along.

MLB teams have a certain amount of bonus pool money they can spend on draft picks in the first 10 rounds without being penalized, making early signability just as important as talent in the baseball draft. If a team knows it can’t match a player’s asking price to sign, it won’t bother wasting a draft pick.

That’s at least part of the equation with Porter, according to a source. While it isn’t known if Porter and his camp have explicitly told teams that he’s going to college and to not draft him, asked if Porter’s asking price is too high or if he simply wants to go the college route, the source said it’s “a little bit of both.” The source said Sunday’s developments make it more likely that Porter ends up at Clemson.

But, as Clemson knows all too well, it’s not over until it’s over.

There’s always a chance a team with a higher bonus pool has more money to offer its picks in the later rounds. The Baltimore Orioles, Arizona Diamondbacks, New York Mets, Pittsburgh Pirates and Colorado Rockies have the most with more than $13 million each to spend.

Just last year, another Clemson signee, Bubba Chandler, widely viewed as a first-round talent, didn’t come off the board until the Pirates took him with the 72nd pick. But Chandler signed after the team gave him a $3 million bonus, more than triple the roughly $870,000 value assigned to that specific pick.

A source said a similar situation could play out with Porter but that his asking price may also simply be out of teams’ price range. The draft will continue today with rounds 3-10 starting at 2 p.m., so Clemson will have to play the waiting game a little longer.

But Sunday was a positive development as it relates to the program’s hopes of getting Porter on campus.

Jacob Misiorowski, LSU signee, drafted by Brewers at No. 63

The JUCO prospect may not be make it to Baton Rouge, after all.

From junior college to the pros, [autotag]Jacob Misiorowski[/autotag] has been drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers in the second round of the 2022 MLB draft at pick No. 63.

We’re at the point of it being a gray area whether these guys are going to sign with the team that drafts them. As a JUCO prospect, Misiorowski might be more willing to sign with a pro team than a high school guy would.

Last season at Crowder College, Misiorowski went 10-0 with a 2.72 ERA and 136 strikeouts in 15 appearances. Misiorowski is the fourth member of the 2022 recruiting class to be drafted in the first two rounds of the MLB draft.

Signing the No. 1 recruiting class in baseball is a gift and a curse. It is a gift because you have the chance of having a great deal of talent next season. It is a curse because half of your team could be drafted the summer before those guys even get on campus.

LSU has seen that during the draft’s first night.

Social media reactions to Oklahoma’s Cade Horton selected No. 7 overall to the Chicago Cubs

Oklahoma Sooners pitcher Cade Horton was selected No. 7 overall to the Chicago Cubs and here are some of the best social media reactions.

The Oklahoma Sooners run to the College World Series final seemed improbable midway through the 2022 college baseball season. One of the big reasons for the Sooners run that included five straight Big 12 series wins, a Big 12 tournament title, and their run through the NCAA tournament to the championship series was Cade Horton.

In the Big 12 tournament and beyond, he was electric, displaying filthy stuff and befuddling hitters at every stop. Though it didn’t turn out the way Sooners fans would have liked with a national championship, Horton was fantastic and one fo the bright spots of the tournament.

For his efforts, Horton was selected No. 7 overall in the 2022 MLB draft. His efforts helped him climb up draft boards just a year removed from Tommy John’s surgery.

Analysts and fans alike loved the pick, that is unless your a St. Louis Cardinal fan. Let’s take a look at some of the best reactions on social media to Cade Horton’s selection.
