LSU visits NC State transfer quarterback MJ Morris

Quarterbacks coach Joe Sloan reportedly made the trip to Raleigh on Wednesday night to meet with the transfer target.

While LSU seems to be confident in backup quarterback [autotag]Garrett Nussmeier[/autotag] taking over the starting role for [autotag]Jayden Daniels[/autotag] in 2024, the Tigers are looking at an inexperienced depth chart at the position next season.

Coach [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] has not ruled out the team adding a transfer quarterback this offseason, and it seems the primary target is former NC State player [autotag]MJ Morris[/autotag].

The Tigers had reportedly already been in contact with Morris, and on Wednesday night, quarterbacks coach [autotag]Joe Sloan[/autotag] made the trip up to Raleigh to visit Morris at his apartment, according to a report from On3’s Pete Nakos.

Morris has appeared in nine games in two seasons for the Wolfpack, throwing for 1,367 yards, 14 touchdowns and six interceptions. He started at NC State this season, but after playing in four games, he opted to sit the rest of the year and preserve his redshirt season.

He will have three remaining years of eligibility.

As things currently stand, LSU’s quarterback room in 2024 comprises of Nussmeier — who has appeared in 17 games while attempting 174 passes in three seasons but has never made a start — as well as redshirt freshman [autotag]Rickie Collins[/autotag] and 2024 commit [autotag]Colin Hurley[/autotag], who is likely heading for a redshirt season as a true freshman after reclassifying from 2025.

While Nussmeier is likely to get his chance to lead this team after staying at LSU through Daniels’ tenure, it’s not surprising that LSU is looking to add another player with experience at the position.

Brian Kelly not ruling out adding a transfer portal quarterback at LSU this offseason

While Garrett Nussmeier is likely to return, LSU could seek out a more experienced option in the transfer portal.

With star [autotag]Jayden Daniels[/autotag] set to move on following the 2023 season, LSU has a quarterback situation to figure out in 2024.

It will likely return [autotag]Garrett Nussmeier[/autotag], who has some experience and will be a redshirt junior, as well as redshirt freshman [autotag]Rickie Collins[/autotag] and incoming true freshman [autotag]Colin Hurley[/autotag].

While that group has talent, it does lack experience. There’s been some speculation LSU could look at adding a transfer quarterback, and it has reportedly been in contact with at least one in former NC State signal-caller [autotag]MJ Morris[/autotag].

When addressing the media on Tuesday, coach [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] didn’t rule out the possibility.

“This is a world that we live in that has to be handled with transparency,” Kelly said. “If not, you’re going to find yourself without the right personnel. So if we were to ever do anything in the transfer portal relative to a quarterback, we’re talking to everybody in that room. We’re talking to recruits, we’re talking to everybody. It is about transparency, it’s about honesty and it’s about saying if we’re doing that, here’s why we’re doing it. And then making a decision and doing it.

“The most important thing here is what’s in the best interest of LSU’s football program. Not what’s in the best interest of a singular person. So everything we do in the portal is going to be to that end… This is not personal.”

Nussmeier could have certainly transferred last offseason with the opportunity to start, so his decision to stay at LSU is likely playing a factor in that decision. Still, the Tigers would enter 2024 with quite a few questions at the game’s most important position if they don’t seek out an experienced portal option.

LSU has reached out to a transfer portal quarterback

LSU is in search of a quarterback for next season.

With star quarterback [autotag]Jayden Daniels[/autotag] likely winning the Heisman Trophy and heading off to the NFL, LSU is in search of a quarterback for next season.

Is that a decision that could be made in-house? Sure. The Tigers have three different quarterbacks that have seen action this season. Daniels, [autotag]Garrett Nussmeier[/autotag] and [autotag]Rickie Collins[/autotag]. Nussmeier is the most experienced of the two who will return and he will be entering his redshirt junior season on the bayou next year. Nuss knows how to run the offense and he can likely run it well.

Collins is a freshman who has a lot of promise but LSU is still working on developing his skills. He will be redshirted this year and will be a redshirt freshman next year. In Brian Kelly’s opinion, there is nothing wrong with some competition at the quarterback position.

Kelly and the Tigers have reached out to former NC State quarterback [autotag]MJ Morris[/autotag] in the transfer portal to gauge his interest in Baton Rouge. Morris has appeared in nine games over his two years at NC State. He has experience at the Division I level and might be a good fit for the Tigers offense.

Report: N.C. State quarterback M.J. Morris to redshirt remainder of 2023 season

The Wolfpack sophomore led the team to upset wins over Clemson and Miami the past two weeks and won three of his four starts.

North Carolina State quarterback M.J. Morris will redshirt the remainder of the 2023 season, according to a Tuesday report from The Wolfpacker’s Ethan McDowell.

The sophomore quarterback played the past four games for the Wolfpack, taking over for former Virginia signal-caller Brennan Armstrong. The Wolfpack won three of Morris’s four games, including upset wins over Clemson and Miami the past two weeks.

Morris threw for 719 yards and seven touchdowns over his tenure at the helm of the offense, completing 55.8% of his passes for 6.4 yards per attempt. He threw three interceptions in his debut against Marshall, but he has only thrown two in the three games since.

Armstrong will slide back in as N.C. State’s starter. He led the passing offense in the first five games of the season, throwing for 971 yards, five touchdowns, and six interceptions. He completed 58.8% of his passes for 6.1 yards per attempt. The senior has continued to contribute to the offense with his legs while Morris started, rushing for 51 yards on eight attempts against Miami.

The Wolfpack play Wake Forest on Saturday.

Elite 2022 QB MJ Morris sees Michigan as ‘high-priority’

The Atlanta (GA) Pace Academy four-star dual-threat shares why he was emotional hearing from Jim Harbaugh and ‘high-priority’ Michigan.

It’s common knowledge that quarterback is the most important position on the football field, if not in all of sports. Thus, when there’s a great one out there at the high school-level, college coaches clamor to bring them into their program.

In 2022, there are only a handful of QBs ranked higher than MJ Morris, the Atlanta (GA) Pace Academy four-star dual-threat who’s ranked No. 52 overall in the 247Sports Composite.

So when Sept. 1 rolled around, Morris was overwhelmed by college coaches blowing up his phone — so much he couldn’t take all of the attention, as positive as it might have been.

“It was definitely a cool day. It was kind of hard – I had to turn my phone off at one point, my phone was blowing up,” Morris told WolverinesWire. “And then at one point, (a school) contacted me with my ringer off. But it was also pretty cool. I got a lot of texts, I got a lot of calls, I got a love from a lot of schools. It was definitely a blessing.”

The highlight for the four-star QB, though, was hearing from Michigan’s Jim Harbaugh.

He heard from a lot of head coaches, a veritable ‘who’s who.’ But something about Harbaugh reaching out felt a little more special, he says.

“I actually got a little emotional when Coach Harbaugh texted me. He texted me and was like, ‘I can’t wait to build this relationship,’” Morris said. “A lot of head coaches texted me, like Georgia Tech – Coach Kirby Smart texted me, Gus Malzahn texted me, Coach Collins at Georgia Tech texted me, Coach Mullen at Florida and then Coach Norvell over at Florida State. So I got to know a lot of those coaches.”

Why was Harbaugh the one who made him smile ear-to-ear though? He explains.

“Just because he’s well-known all over the nation,” Morris said. “He’s a big-time coach in the world. When he texted me, I thought, ‘Wow, I never thought he would actually text me!’ It was definitely great to know how great of a coach would text me that coaches a big program.”

While it was special hearing from Harbaugh, Morris has been developing a friendship with Michigan quarterbacks coach Ben McDaniels, his primary recruiter in Ann Arbor.

Even when life gets crazy, the two strive to stay in frequent communication. It might not always work out that way, but they’re doing their best to stay in each others’ lives at this point in Morris’ recruitment.

“Our relationship has been building,” Morris said. “We try to talk at least once or twice a week, but it’s getting kind of hard to because I started school and then I have practice, so it’s getting kind of hard to stay in touch with him. We definitely stay in touch. We usually have 20-30 minutes of staying in touch, asking how our families are, asking how our schools are, asking how our offenses are, how I’m feeling about the season, what all Michigan’s doing – that kind of stuff. So our connection is getting really, really strong right now.”

For many top-notch recruits outside of the Midwest, despite all of Michigan’s accolades, it doesn’t get put on the map until someone like five-star J.J. McCarthy commits.

That’s not the case for Morris, however. While he hasn’t watched much Wolverines football, he was already well aware of Michigan’s prowess.

And considering McCarthy would eventually be Morris’ competition if he does choose to wear maize and blue, he already looks at him as a threat he’d have to take over once he’d arrive on campus.

“I’ve always known about Michigan. It’s just a great program, everyone knows it’s a great program there,” Morris said. “My eyes were open before J.J. McCarthy. I’m not really too focused on him. I know he’s a great quarterback. But if Michigan’s the place for me, I’m gonna go in there and compete for a starting job because I feel like I’m in the top-end of my abilities.

“I didn’t watch Michigan that much, but now that I’m really considering them – they’re a high-priority school – then I’m definitely going to start watching them whenever they come on TV.”

At the moment, Mizzou, Georgia, Florida, Florida State, Oregon, Nebraska, Georgia Tech, Miami, and Penn State are recruiting Morris the hardest. Because of COVID-19, he hasn’t had a chance to see much, as of yet, and thus wants to take his time in his recruitment. So far, he’s only been to Georgia, Alabama, Auburn and Tennessee. He’s not going to make any commitments until the dead period is relinquished and he can make some college visits — so, a decision will likely come next year.

As a dual-threat, he’s looking for an offense that has some semblance of balance between the run and the pass. “I don’t want to go to an offense that hands the ball off 80% of the time,” he says. As for Michigan: “I think I would fit into the offense great. (I’m looking for) an offense where I could make reads and that could get me ready for the next level if I can get there.”

Morris didn’t grow up an Auburn fan, per se, but his mother is a graduate, and he’s emulated his game off of Cam Newton — along with Clemson’s DeShaun Watson.

When it comes to finding a college, Morris wants to make sure that he finds a place where, regardless of the situation, he isn’t going to want to leave. Whether it be because of the competition or the locale, wherever he goes, he wants to stay until he graduates and/or head to the NFL.

“One thing I want when I get to campus, I want to feel like I can feel like I’m at home and stay there for three-to-four years of my life and never think about leaving or transferring,” he said. “If I’m like comfortable with a place and I bond with the coaches and the teammates, I feel like that’s gonna make my game so much better, because I’m comfortable. Pretty much what I’m looking for.”
