Notre Dame tight end Mitchell Evans lands on another preseason watch list

Evans is very highly thought of entering the season

If the preseason award watch lists are correct, then Notre Dame football tight end[autotag]Mitchell Evans[/autotag] is in line for a big season.

The senior had already been named to the Biletnikoff Award and Comeback Player of the Year Award’s watchlists. On Friday another outlet named Evans to its watchlist, the [autotag]Mackey Award[/autotag], given out to the nation’s top tight end.

Irish faithful are fully aware of this honor, even if Tyler Eifert is the only former player to actually win the award. Evans will have his shot this year, as Notre Dame’s offense will look drastically different in 2024. With more of an emphasis on the passing game, the tight end should see plenty of opportunities to put up big statistics.

If Evans can gain 800-plus yards with around 8 touchdowns, he will surely be in the conversation to take home the award. It may seem like a lofty goal, but with this offense it is entirely possible.

ESPN: Receiver is Notre Dame’s biggest question mark

Hope the Irish can make strides in that this season.

No matter how good a college football team is, there always is a weakness the opposition looks to exploit. Notre Dame is no exception.

ESPN has determined what it believes to be the biggest question mark for each team in its post-spring Top 25. Notre Dame was fifth on that list, and David Hale is the writer who listed receiver as the most pressing issue for the Irish. He elaborated this way:

“There’s room for optimism with this receivers corps, which includes the addition of transfers [autotag]Beaux Collins[/autotag] (Clemson) and [autotag]Kris Mitchell[/autotag] (FIU), along with holdovers [autotag]Jordan Faison[/autotag], [autotag]Jaden Greathouse[/autotag] and [autotag]Jayden Thomas[/autotag]. But last year’s leading wideouts, Chris Tyree and Rico Flores Jr., both transferred, and it was a unit that struggled often even with them. No wide receiver caught more than 27 passes in 2022 or 2023. Notre Dame hasn’t had a 1,000-yard receiver since [autotag]Chase Claypool[/autotag] in 2019.

With [autotag]Riley Leonard[/autotag]’s legs, a big O-line and a talented backfield (not to mention a burgeoning star in tight end [autotag]Mitchell Evans[/autotag]), there’s not a ton of pressure on the receivers to put up earth-shattering numbers, but genuine progress will be critical to an Irish offense that lost three games last season all scoring 23 points or less. In those three games, the wide receivers combined for just two touchdown grabs and none had more than four catches in any one game.”

It’s a fair assessment, and the Irish have taken steps to address receive with five freshman receivers new to the program in 2024, including [autotag]Cam Williams[/autotag] and [autotag]Micah Gilbert[/autotag]. Results might not happen right away, but at least the Irish were aware of this Achilles’ heel with their offense. It will be a fun group to watch develop.

Mitchell Evans a Top-Five Tight End in New College Football Video Game

What kind of year are you expecting from Mitchell Evans?

What kind of season will Notre Dame tight end Mitchell Evans have in 2024?

The answer to that question will probably tell you a lot about how strong Notre Dame’s offense is as the star appears to be the most talented target new Irish quarterback Riley Leonard will have at his disposal.

Evans is however coming off an ACL injury that he suffered roughly two-thirds through last season.  It’s an injury that kept him out of spring practice but he’s expected to be ready to go for fall camp.

Just how strong will Evans be once camp gets here?

The new EA Sports College Football video game thinks pretty strong as they have given him a 90-rating.  That’s good to be one of the five-best tight ends in the game.

With so many question marks at wide receiver, getting big-time production from a tight end would be really helpful to Mike Denbrock in his first year back calling plays for Notre Dame.

PFF picks one offensive player in 2025 NFL draft for Colts to watch

PFF selected one player on offense for each team to keep their eyes on this college football season. Here is who they picked for the Colts.

The 2025 NFL draft may be a ways off, but the college football season is now on the horizon, and with that, PFF picked out one player on offense that Colts fans should keep their eyes on this season: Notre Dame tight end Mitchell Evans.

“Indianapolis’ next offensive addition should come at tight end,” wrote Trevor Sikkema. “Notre Dame’s Mitchell Evans will look to continue the long NFL tight end lineage the program has set up, and although he doesn’t appear to be as athletic as Michael Mayer or Cole Kmet, he is close and brings in impressive contested catches over the middle as a reliable first-down option.”

Listed at 6-5 – 260 pounds, Evans was putting together a breakout season in 2023 as a receiving threat in the Notre Dame offense. Through eight games, Evans caught 29 of his 40 passes for 422 yards and one touchdown.

Among all tight ends, Evans ranked seventh in PFF’s receiving grade, sixth in yards per route run, and 20th in yards per catch. Unfortunately, he would suffer a season-ending ACL injury against Pittsburgh.

During Evans’ first two seasons, he had just nine targets and was primarily utilized as a blocker. This past year, however, in addition to getting more pass-catching opportunities, Evans saw nearly 50 percent of his snaps come lined up in the slot.

For more on Evans, here is what Pro Football Network’s Ian Cummings wrote in his pre-draft report:

“At 6’5″, 260 pounds, size and play strength are obvious play strengths of Evans’, and he brings great power and physicality as a run blocker as well. His experience as a TE2 behind Mayer helped refine his blocking skills, and in 2023, his nuance as a receiver came to light.

“Though Evans isn’t as dynamic an athlete as Mayer was, he’s fluid enough to separate independently on digs and out routes, and he can work up the seam well enough with his baseline explosiveness and box-out ability.”

Tight end very well could be a top priority for GM Chris Ballard in next year’s draft. As of now, both Mo Alie-Cox and Kylen Granson are set to be free agents next offseason, while Jelani Woods and Drew Ogletree will be entering the final year of their rookie deals at that point.

There is the potential for Woods to thrive in Shane Steichen’s RPO-heavy offense, and now fully healthy, he is out to prove that he can play a key role offensively. But at this time, that still remains to be seen.

The Colts have invested into this position through the draft but haven’t had that go-to option at tight end. Instead, Ballard has built a unit that collectively has a diverse group of skill sets.

Last season under Steichen, two tight end sets were the Colts’ second most utilized personnel package.

Notre Dame’s Mitchell Evans named top tight end heading into 2024

How much does this excite you?

Notre Dame has developed quite the reputation for developing tight ends in recent years. When one standout at that position moves on, there seemingly always is another one ready to fill that role.

The Irish’s top tight end this season is [autotag]Mitchell Evans[/autotag], who finished behind the departed Chris Tyree for most receiving yards on the 2023 Irish. Needless to say, he’ll be relied upon heavily for the Irish’s success in 2024. In fact, according to Big Game Boomer, social media’s college sports list aficionado, there’s nobody better in the country at his position:

In another list tweeted by Big Game Boomer earlier this week, [autotag]Kris Mitchell[/autotag], who transferred to the Irish from Florida International, was ranked the No. 16 receiver in the country. Still another ranked [autotag]Jeremiyah Love[/autotag] as the No. 42 running back, and one more earlier this month had [autotag]Riley Leonard[/autotag] as the No. 17 quarterback.

Needless to say, the 2024 Irish are going to be stacked with top-heavy offensive talent. The question is whether it will be enough to push them over the top.

Notre Dame’s leading receiver is entering the transfer portal

Farewell, Chris.

With the regular season in the books, the dominoes regarding the transfer portal are starting to fall. Notre Dame already is losing defensive end Nana Osafo-Mensah to the portal. Now, the Irish can add Chris Tyree to the list after he made the announcement on Instagram:

Tyree converted from running back to receiver during the past year and made the most of it. He finished the regular season as the Irish’s top receiver with 484 yards on 26 receptions, three of them going for touchdowns. He also has the Irish’s only punt return for a touchdown this season.

While we obviously wish Tyree the best moving forward, the Irish’s receiving corps just took another hit ahead of their bowl game. [autotag]Mitchell Evans[/autotag], the tight end right behind Tyree on the receiving chart, is out for the season with an injury. That leaves [autotag]Rico Flores[/autotag] as the top remaining receiver with 392 yards on 27 receptions and one touchdown. Best of luck to [autotag]Gerad Parker[/autotag] in planning for the final game of the season.

Notre Dame statistical leaders through 11 games

Hopefully, these players can end the regular season on a high note.

Notre Dame has one game left in the regular season against Stanford. Good luck finding a way to watch it on the Pac-12 Network, but that’s a topic for another day. Right now, let’s focus on who is most likely to help the Irish beat the Cardinal.

Statistically, here’s who is likely to factor in whether the Irish can get revenge for last year’s defeat in South Bend:

Notre Dame statistical leaders through 10 games

Here’s who to look for against Wake Forest.

Notre Dame has two games left to improve the quality of the bowl it will play in. That might not mean much given that the New Year’s Six bowls are out of play, but it still is something to shoot for. The first of these contests comes against Wake Forest.

Here are the players statistically leading the Irish going into their home finale, one of which knows the Demon Deacons very well:

Tale of the Tape: Notre Dame offense vs. Clemson defense

This D is to be feared in spite of the Tigers’ struggles.

Notre Dame is having fun with an offense has found its footing once again. While it’s too late for it to matter for the College Football Playoff, the unit sure is entertaining to watch. However, the Irish now must forge ahead without leading receiver [autotag]Mitchell Evans[/autotag], who is done for the year with a torn ACL. Fortunately, they still have a few playmakers on this side of the ball, so there shouldn’t be too much of an issue.

There are reasons Clemson has struggled this season, but the defense isn’t high on that list. The unit ranks in the top 20 across several yardage categories, and any opposing offense should fear it. The Irish need to be careful because this easily is a game in which the offense could regress back to what it was during the gauntlet portion of the schedule.

Here’s a look at how the Irish’s offense matches up with the Tigers’ defense:

Top Notre Dame receiver Mitchell Evans out for season with torn ACL

Big loss for the Irish.

Notre Dame will be without its top receiver for the rest of the season. [autotag]Marcus Freeman[/autotag] confirmed Monday that tight end [autotag]Mitchell Evans[/autotag] tore his ACL in Saturday’s win over Pittsburgh.

Evans, who was in his junior season, currently is the Irish’s top receiver with 422 yards on 29 receptions. He is averaging 14.6 yards a receptions and has scored one touchdown, which came in the loss to Louisville.

This obviously is a tough blow to an Irish offense that has been starting to find its groove again after going through a tough stretch. [autotag]Gerad Parker[/autotag] now will have to dig further into the depth chart.

[autotag]Holden Staes[/autotag] has scored the second-most touchdowns for the Irish this season at four, but this also will open up more opportunities from [autotag]Eli Raridon[/autotag] and [autotag]Cooper Flanagan[/autotag]. Still, they probably wish it was happening under better circumstances.

Hopefully, we’ll see Evans in an Irish uniform again before too long. Until then, here’s to a speedy recovery.
