Local 3-star product announces Clemson offer

The Daniel High School product announced his Clemson offer on Friday.

Less than 24 hours after announcing his decommittment from Virginia Tech, in-state prospect Misun Kelley shared via Twitter on Friday that he had received an offer from Clemson.

The 2023 three-star cornerback out of Daniel High School could make an impact on both sides of the ball for the Tigers if he chooses to commit to Clemson in the coming months.

While at Daniel High School, Kelley has made game appearances at both wide receiver and cornerback. If the local product commits to Clemson, he would become the fourth cornerback (21st overall) to join the Tigers 2023 recruiting class which currently includes four-star Avieon Terrell, four-star Branden Strozier and three-star Shelton Lewis.

Misun Kelley was surprised when he saw that he had an incoming call from Clemson coach Dabo Swinney on Friday morning.

It’s not unusual for Clemson’s head man to give the three-star athlete out of nearby Central (S.C.) D. W. Daniel High School, a phone call. Kelley, who recently walked back his pledge from Virginia Tech, knew that the offer was coming, but he was surprised that it came Friday.

“Swinney had called me and told me that I had been balling on the field,” Kelley told The Clemson Insider in a phone interview Friday afternoon. “He said that they were ready to 100% offer me. I’ve been talking to (wide receivers coach Tyler) Grisham and (defensive coordinator Wesley) Goodwin too a lot.”

Clemson offered Kelley as an athlete. According to Kelley, the Tigers see him as an electric, versatile weapon that can return punts, shut down opposing receivers or score touchdowns.

“It feels pretty good,” he said of receiving an offer from Clemson, “but honestly any offer feels pretty good. It feels the same as any offer.”

Kelley has developed a close relationship with both Grisham and Goodwin, which he said has come about more recently.

He went into more detail on his decision to decommit from Virginia Tech on Thursday.

“I wanted to see more schools,” Kelley said. “I know they need me, which I could commit back to, but I just wanted to see other places before I make a final decision.”

In addition to Clemson, Kelley mentions schools like Virginia Tech, James Madison, Maryland, Oklahoma and Florida as those currently involved in his recruitment. He’ll be taking an official visit to James Madison in the near future and also plans to pay visits to both Oklahoma and Florida.

Kelley will be unofficially visiting Clemson on Oct. 22 for the Syracuse game. While Kelley plans on taking an official visit to Clemson, he said that it’s still something that he’ll need to set up with the coaching staff.

Now that Kelley has an offer in hand from the Tigers, he stated that Clemson is a top team in his recruitment, behind that of Virginia Tech and Okhaoma. These upcoming visits will ultimately be a crucial determining factor in his college decision.

“If I go to Clemson, I want to be able to play, which I know I’ll be able to play off the bat,” Kelley said when asked regarding what he’s looking for in a school at the next level. “Just stuff like that. I want to go to a school that I can really play at and they can offer me the best.”

As far as a decision timeline is concerned, Kelley is hoping to render one prior to December.

A day after backing off his pledge from a fellow ACC school, Central (S.C.) D W Daniel three-star cornerback Misun Kelley now has an offer in hand from Clemson.

Kelley announced the offer from the Tigers via social media Friday.

Kelley, who plays on both sides of the ball at Daniel, told The Clemson Insider back in May that believes he could make an impact for the Tigers if they decide to pull the trigger on an offer.

“I think I’m their guy,” he said. “I think I got a talent that they need, playing both ways, just being an athlete all around.”

Misun Kelley is very familiar with Clemson, having made the short trip to campus on numerous occasions including a few times this spring.

The local cornerback prospect from nearby Daniel High School (Central, S.C.) attended the Tigers’ second junior day of the year on March 5 and was also an unofficial visitor for the Orange & White Spring Game on April 9. He made another trip to take in one of the Tigers’ spring practices as well and was impressed by what he saw from the corners.

“I like the way they played,” Kelley told The Clemson Insider. “They played with a lot of swag and they’re pretty aggressive, too. They can tackle a lot, too.”

Kelley (5-11.5, 177) continues to keep in contact with Clemson cornerbacks coach Mike Reed and has communicated a little more with head coach Dabo Swinney of late.

What has Kelley been hearing from Reed and Swinney?

“Coach Reed, just the same stuff,” Kelley said. “He’s been sending me quotes about stuff. He sends me more quotes now, just like about life and Jesus.”

Added Kelley of Swinney: “He’s just complimenting me a lot more when I send him videos of me and stuff. He’s telling me I’m doing good and it’s coming.”

Kelley is expecting Clemson defensive coordinator Wes Goodwin to be on hand to watch him practice at some point after Daniel’s spring practices get underway this month, and Kelley plans to work out in front of the Tigers’ coaching staff at the first session of the Swinney Football Camp on June 1.

When he camps at Clemson, Kelley – who also participated in the Swinney Camp last summer – said he hopes to show the coaches that “there’s more of a dog in me.”

“I’ve got a lot more confidence,” he added. “I know what I’m doing, too. Last year, I didn’t really know what I was doing because I never started training for DB. But I think now, I’ve got a lot more swagger in me, a lot more confidence.”

Kelley named Arizona State, South Carolina, Kentucky, Virginia and Pittsburgh as other schools he’s looking to visit moving forward. His offer list currently includes Louisville, Appalachian State, Liberty, Middle Tennessee, Coastal Carolina, East Carolina, Georgia State, Tulane, Navy, Old Dominion and James Madison.

Kelley said he will “probably be committing on August 6.”

“I don’t want to play my senior season with recruiting stuff on my mind,” he said. “I just want to already know where I want to go.”

Kelley, who plays on both sides of the ball at Daniel, believes he could make an impact for the Tigers if they decide to pull the trigger on an offer.

“I think I’m their guy,” he said. “I think I got a talent that they need, playing both ways, just being an athlete all around.”

Local standout talks Clemson visit, says Swinney’s program is ‘just different’

Clemson recently played host to a standout local prospect in the 2023 class who has seen interest from the Tigers ramp up of late.

Daniel High School (Central, S.C.) cornerback Misun Kelley returned to campus as an unofficial visitor for the Tigers’ “spring elite day” – their second junior day of the year – on Saturday, March 5.

Kelley, who also made a couple of unofficial visits to Clemson on game days last season after competing at the Dabo Swinney Camp last summer, came away impressed after his latest experience around Swinney’s program.

“I enjoyed it a lot,” Kelley said to The Clemson Insider. “I got to talk to the coaches a lot. I like how Dabo runs things there. He runs it in like a special, unique way instead of just how everybody else runs it. You can tell it’s just different.”

Kelley (5-11.5, 175) had the chance to speak a little bit with Swinney, who let Kelley know that he has been keeping tabs on him.

“He just told me to keep working, how he’s always staying in touch with me,” Kelley said of what he heard the Tigers’ head coach. “Just keep working, keep grinding.”

While on campus, of all the coaches, Kelley spent the most time with Mike Reed.

“It wasn’t really about football, honestly,” Kelley said of his conversations with Clemson’s cornerbacks coach. “He was just talking to me about how he wants his players to be as people instead of only as football players. He talked about how they like to run defense or how he likes his corners to play, like he likes his corners to tackle and stuff.”

Kelley was accompanied on the visit by a couple of friends along with family members, including his mother, who was impressed by the visit as well.

“My mom was like how she loved how they run things, how they actually care about players instead of just offering people (based on their) skill set,” Kelley said. “A lot of schools offer people just for like how good they are, they don’t really care about them as people.”

The highlight of the visit experience for Kelley was the photoshoot, during which he and other recruits got to take pictures in Clemson uniforms.

“It’s just crazy to me kind of because I live right down the road, and I’ve always dreamed of putting the uniforms on,” he said.

Asked what it would mean to him to receive an offer from Clemson – and have the chance to actually suit up for the Tigers on the field in the future – the talented local corner couldn’t put it into words.

“Words probably couldn’t even explain how I’d feel. I think I’d feel so elated,” he said. “I can’t even explain into words how crazy and amazing that would be.”

Kelley visited Georgia Tech on March 12 and is planning to visit schools such as East Carolina, Houston and Coastal Carolina.

East Carolina and Coastal Carolina have offered Kelley, along with Louisville, Appalachian State, Liberty, Middle Tennessee, Georgia State, Old Dominion and James Madison.

Top talent flocking to Tiger Town for Clemson’s ‘spring elite day’

Clemson is set to host a slew of top prospects today for its second junior day of the year, which the Tigers are dubbing their “spring elite day” for recruits in the class of 2023.

Among the headliners expected to be in attendance is Central (Phenix City, Ala.) five-star A.J. Harris, the nation’s No. 2 cornerback and No. 17 overall prospect in the 2023 class, per the 247Sports Composite rankings. The 6-foot-2, 175-pounder has made multiple trips to Tiger Town and is a priority target for the Tigers. Last September, he released a top seven comprised of Clemson, Alabama, LSU, Notre Dame, North Carolina, Georgia and Ohio State.

Harris will be joined on campus by a host of other talented defensive backs, including Harris’ teammate at Central, cornerback Quintavious Billingsley; Lake Mary (Fla.) four-star cornerback Braedan Marshall; Eagles Landing Christian Academy (McDonough, Ga.) three-star cornerback Colton Hood; Daniel (Central, S.C.) cornerback Misun Kelley; North Oconee (Bogart, Ga.) cornerback Khalil Barnes; Loachapoka (Auburn, Ala.) cornerback Jacorious Hart; Milton (Alpharetta, Ga.) three-star safety Robert Billings; and A.C. Reynolds (Asheville, N.C.) safety Dashawn Stone.

Another headliner slated to be on hand for the spring elite day is Oceanside Collegiate Academy (Mount Pleasant, S.C.) four-star offensive lineman Monroe Freeling.

It will mark his first visit to Clemson since attending the Florida State game in late October of last year. He was also on campus last June to participate in the Dabo Swinney Camp, after which he picked up an offer from the Tigers.

Freeling said during a recent interview with The Clemson Insider that the Tigers “stand highly” in his recruitment heading into today’s visit.

“I really loved the culture there when I first went up and I’ve been maintaining a good relationship with (offensive line) coach (Thomas) Austin,” he said, “and I’m just looking forward to growing it some more when I get out there.”

Along with Clemson, which is heavily pursuing Freeling, he named Miami and Notre Dame as a couple of schools that have been recruiting him the hardest.

According to the 247Sports Composite, Freeling is the No. 1 prospect in South Carolina, No. 9 offensive tackle nationally and No. 82 overall prospect for the 2023 class.

South Point (Belmont, N.C.) four-star offensive lineman Sullivan Absher will also return to Clemson after picking up an offer from the Tigers in February – an offer that he told TCI he “had been working for, for a very long time.”  He previously traveled to Clemson twice during this past season – first for the Boston College game in October and then for the Wake Forest game in November.

Another big-time offensive lineman will be on campus today as well in Eagles Landing Christian Academy (McDonough, Ga.) four-star tackle Zechariah Owens.

As for the defensive linemen expected to be among the junior day visitors, there are several prominent prospects, namely St. John’s (Washington, D.C.) four-star David Ojiegbe, Hewitt-Trussville (Trussville, Ala.) four-star Hunter Osborne, Rome (Ga.) four-star Stephiylan Green, Upson-Lee (Thomaston, Ga.) four-star T.J. Searcy and Woodward Academy (Atlanta, Ga.) four-star A.J. Hoffler.

A bunch of other standout class of 2023 prospects are on the expected guest list for the spring elite day, as well, including Hickory Ridge (Harrisburg, N.C.) four-star wide receiver Christian Hamilton; Bridgeland (Cypress, Texas) four-star tight end Reid Mikeska; Denmark (Alpharetta, Ga.) four-star linebacker Dee Crayton; Fairfax (Va.) four-star linebacker Tony Rojas; F.W. Buchholz (Gainesville, Fla.) three-star wide receiver Creed Whittemore; Maiden (N.C.) High School three-star wide receiver Chris Culliver; Phoebus (Hampton, Va.) three-star athlete Jordan Bass; Sumter (S.C.) athlete Zyeir Gamble; and Dutch Fork (Irmo, S.C.) running back Jarvis Green.

A few notable 2024 prospects are planning to visit Clemson today, too, in Carrollwood Day (Tampa, Fla.) four-star defensive back Tavoy Feagin, Weddington (Matthews, N.C.) tight end Brooks Mauk and Towers (Decatur, Ga.) wide receiver/cornerback Keshawn Weathers.

Local corner seeing Clemson interest ramp up, set to visit this weekend

This standout local defensive back has seen Clemson’s interest in him ramp up recently and is set to be on campus this weekend.

Misun Kelley – a cornerback prospect in the class of 2023 from nearby Daniel High School – will make an unofficial visit to attend the Tigers’ junior day this Saturday, March 5.

“I’m looking forward to it a lot,” Kelley told The Clemson Insider. “Just talking to them more in person – not just Coach (Dabo) Swinney, but Coach (Mike) Reed. I just want to talk to him more in person.”

Reed, Clemson’s cornerbacks coach, has been in regular contact with Kelley, who has also been communicating some with co-defensive coordinators Mickey Conn and Wes Goodwin.

“They’ve been recruiting me a lot harder,” Kelley said.

“They haven’t really been talking to me about football. It’s more about life and God,” he added. “But they’ve just been showing a lot of interest in me.

Kelley (5-11.5, 175) has sent Goodwin a couple of his workout videos and will get the chance to spend time with him Saturday.

“He said I’ve got good footwork,” Kelley said. “He’s been talking to me about my film and (looks forward to) visiting with me when I come down and visit.”

For Kelley, the increased interest and attention from the Tigers serves as evidence that his improvement on the field is being noticed and he’s reaping the rewards of his work ethic.

“It feels a lot better, because I know I’ve been getting better as a player,” he said. “So, it feels like my hard work is finally paying off.”

Kelley respects the manner in which Clemson’s staff is recruiting him and appreciates how their relationship goes beyond just football.

“I think they’re great people because they’re not recruiting kids just to recruit them or offer them like other colleges,” he said. “They’ll actually talk to you about life and care for you.”

“It’s more of like a family thing,” he continued. “You can just feel how they actually care about you and think of you as a person instead of just offering you because you’re a good player.”

Louisville, Coastal Carolina, Appalachian State, East Carolina, Liberty, Middle Tennessee, Georgia State, Old Dominion and James Madison have offered Kelley, who named Cincinnati, Houston, Miami (Ohio) and West Virginia as some of the other schools he’s feeling the most love from at this point in the process along with Clemson.

An offer from the Tigers and the opportunity to play for the team right down the road would obviously mean a lot to Kelley.

“It’d be a big blessing,” he said. “That’d be like a big plus, just knowing I have a hometown offer.”

In addition to Clemson on Saturday, Kelley has scheduled upcoming visits to Georgia Tech on March 20, Houston on March 26 and Coastal Carolina on April 2.

Playing at Clemson ‘a big dream’ for local standout

Clemson, of course, has close ties to the Daniel High School football program, with the local school in Central, S.C., producing plenty of Tigers over the years.

Another standout player from Daniel on Clemson’s recruiting radar is Misun Kelley, a 5-foot-11, 170-pound cornerback prospect in the class of 2023 with a half-dozen offers under his belt.

Clemson is showing interest in Kelley, and an offer from the Tigers is certainly one he has dreamed about getting.

“Clemson has been like my dream school,” he told The Clemson Insider recently. “I’ve always been a Clemson fan.”

Kelley made a couple of unofficial visits to Clemson during the season, the second of which was for the Florida State game in late October.

While on campus in the fall, Kelley was able to spend time with cornerbacks coach Mike Reed, who has indicated to Kelley that an offer from the Tigers could be in the cards for him.

“He was just saying stuff like it’s coming, I guess my offer’s coming,” Kelley recalled of what he heard from Reed.

“He was like making jokes and stuff,” Kelley added. “He’s a pretty fun person. He’s just a pretty funny coach. I don’t really like coaches who can’t make jokes and they’re just all serious the whole entire time. But you can just joke around with him and you know when he’s serious or not, too.”

Kelley also had the chance to work out with Reed when he camped at Clemson last summer. He impressed with his performance at the Dabo Swinney Camp and received positive feedback from Reed as well as Swinney, who is familiar with Kelley as a player, considering Swinney was able to observe him while attending Daniel’s games to watch his youngest son, Clay.

“I’m down the road, so it kind of helps me out,” Kelley said. “Because Coach Swinney’s son played on my team, so it helps me out because Coach Swinney comes and watches me play every Friday. But Clay graduated this year, so I won’t have that next year. But they were just talking about how they like the way I play and stuff.”

In addition to playing in the secondary, Kelley saw action at receiver and running back for Daniel this past season.

“I only played like seven games of offense and I had like 750 yards and 12 TDs, I think,” he said. “And I played running back some, too, and I helped them on the defensive side of the ball, too.”

Louisville, Coastal Carolina, Appalachian State, East Carolina, Middle Tennessee and Liberty have all offered Kelley.

Kelley knows how judicious Swinney and the Tigers are with the offers they dispense, but that’s something he appreciates the most when he thinks about the program.

“Just how Coach Swinney doesn’t just offer kids because they’re good,” he said. “He offers them because he knows everything about them. He just gets to know people before he offers them.”

Kelley is keeping his fingers crossed that he will be one of the select number of prospects to earn a prized offer from Clemson and have the chance to go right down the road to play his college ball at Death Valley.

“That would be a big dream for me because I grew up here,” he said. “So, that would be a hometown offer and I wouldn’t have to go out of state or anything. And then just playing for them would be so big for me.”

Local defensive back returning to Death Valley this weekend

The Clemson Insider has learned that a local standout prospect will be making his return visit to The Valley this weekend.

D.W. Daniel (Central, S.C.) 2023 cornerback Misun Kelley will be among the prospects in attendance for Clemson’s matchup against Florida State at Memorial Stadium at 3:30 p.m. Saturday.

Obviously, Clemson has close ties to the Daniel program, but Kelley impressed with his play at the Dabo Swinney Camp earlier this summer.

He spoke to TCI back in June about his experience at the camp. According to Kelley, he exchanged information with both Clemson defensive coordinator Brent Venables and cornerbacks coach Mike Reed.

Kelley picked up an offer from Louisville on the recruiting trail this summer. He has since picked up offers from Coastal Carolina and Middle Tennessee State. That being said, he’s still vying for an offer from his hometown team.

“It means a lot that they’re looking at me right now,” Kelley said. “It would be great if they would offer me, getting offered by my hometown, especially because I’ve lived here my whole life.”
