Carlos Santana’s electric walk-off homer sparked an amazing Pirates dance party on home plate

This Carlos Santana walk-off Pirates homer sparked the BEST dance party.

Pittsburgh Pirates designated hitter/first baseman Carlos Santana lived up to his “Slamtana” nickname on Friday night.

In the bottom of the ninth, the Pirates trailed the Milwaukee Brewers 7-6 until Santana stepped up to the plate and blasted a homer out of the field with a runner on base to give Pittsburgh a walk-off 8-7 win at home.

It was a phenomenal moment for Pirates fans as the veteran knocked out the win and danced his way into a celebratory huddle with all of his teammates.

While Pittsburgh isn’t having the best season with a 39-42 record going into July, this is the kind of bombastic moment that sparks turnarounds.

Santana also got an ice bath from Pirates infielders Rodolfo Castro and Tucupita Marcano to go along with the victorious dance party.

This video is so exciting that it makes you want to jump up from your computer chair and dance along with the Pirates, even if you’re not even vaguely a Pittsburgh fan.

Top 10 Notre Dame baseball players according to ChatGPT

How many of these players do you recognize?

So Notre Dame will not make the College World Series for a second straight season. In fact, it didn’t make the NCAA Tournament at all. So what are Irish fans left to do? Look into the past, of course.

Not long ago, we took the liberty of asking ChatGPT, the AI information bot that supposedly is threatening to put all of us writers out of work, its opinion on Notre Dame athletic history. Specifically, we asked it to rank what it believed were the top 10 Notre Dame football, men’s basketball and women’s basketball players. Now, we’re bringing it back to seek its opinion about Irish baseball players.

Keep in mind that ChatGPT gives this disclaimer:

“As an AI, I don’t have access to real-time information or the ability to provide subjective opinions. However, I can tell you about some notable baseball players who have had successful careers at the University of Notre Dame. Keep in mind that this list is not exhaustive and does not rank them in any particular order.”

There’s also this:

“Please note that this is not an exhaustive or ranked list, and there have been many other talented baseball players who have represented the University of Notre Dame.”

So with all of that said, let’s see who ChatGPT came up with. Please note that some of these have been edited to remove inaccurate or outdated information:

The Brewers’ Willy Adames got ejected after a blatantly spiteful sequence from umpire Adam Beck

The Ump Show doesn’t get much worse than that.

MLB’s new rules are designed to speed up the game, but sometimes, umpires can weaponize those rules against the batter. Brewers shortstop Willy Adames certainly felt that umpire Adam Beck did just that on Saturday.

During Adames’ sixth-inning at-bat against the Angels’ Jaime Barría, the Brewers shortstop wanted timeout after a first-pitch ball was high and tight. Now, Adames let the pitch clock run down close to the eight-second cutoff. But he did appear to call timeout in time. Umpires aren’t required to grant a timeout to the batter, and Beck opted to let Barría continue with the pitch even as Adames left the box.

The problems really sparked by how Beck handled the situation. He not only didn’t grant Adames timeout, but he also missed the call, ruling that a high pitch was a strike.

Both the broadcast and MLB’s strike-zone chart had the pitch missing the zone.

As Adames returned to the box, he voiced his frustration towards Beck. And in that time, he didn’t become alert to the pitcher before the eight-second mark, so Beck signaled an automatic strike. That led to manager Craig Counsell being ejected for arguing.

Once Adames struck out swinging on the next pitch, he had more words for Beck and was ejected for the first time in his big-league career.

Between the no timeout, missed call, automatic strike and double ejections, the entire sequence was peak Ump Show. And fans weren’t pleased with Beck’s antics either. The umpire instigated the entire incident.

Garrett Mitchell crediting his wife’s absence for walk-off HR led to some funny tweets

This is too funny.

Garrett Mitchell had a message for his wife in his postgame interview after crushing a walkoff home run against the New York Mets on Wednesday.

“I was thinking about this, but: When my wife doesn’t show up to the games,” he said to Sophia Minnaert, “usually something good happens. Going into that at-bat, I was like, ‘Man, well, she’s not here, so might as well do something fun.'”

LOL! Mitchell is married to pro softball player Haley Cruse Mitchell, who definitely saw the interview and had to say something on Twitter. Actually, it was a bunch of things and they were all very funny:

Garrett made up for it though:

But …

Too funny. Here’s a photo of them:

Jeff McNeil practically threw a mid-game tantrum about the grass at the Brewers’ stadium

The Mets were down 10-0 at the time.

I guess we should all be happy that Jeff McNeil didn’t play in this year’s Super Bowl because he appears to be very passionate about field conditions. And he’s not afraid to let everyone know about it either.

Monday’s game at American Family Field against the Milwaukee Brewers was a rough afternoon for the Mets. They didn’t get to see a pregame flyover because of a roof. They got a pitch-clock violation before throwing the game’s first pitch. Oh, and they were trailing by 10 runs after five innings.

So while the grass at the Brewers’ home ballpark had nothing to do with the big deficit, McNeil couldn’t hide his frustrations when he lost his footing on the field as he tried to make a play.

We won’t be seeing that play on any mic’d-up segments — that’s for sure.

McNeil’s cleats did get caught in the turf, which left a huge divot. So, something about the field impacted his movement. But it would have been a difficult play, and it was already a 10-run ballgame.

MLB fans found the entire sequence hilarious given the score at the time.

MLB fans roasted the Brewers for having a pregame flyover with the stadium roof closed

This really happened.

Monday’s game between the Brewers and Mets was the home opener for Milwaukee. And as we often see across sporting events in America, a pregame flyover was scheduled to be part of the festivities.

There was just one problem: The fans at the stadium weren’t able to see it.

Like several stadiums in MLB, American Family Field has a retractable roof. And though the roof is functional and can safely be opened with fans present (unlike Arizona’s Chase Field), the Brewers typically keep the roof closed whenever the temperature is below 60 degrees and there is rain in the forecast. With a 56-degree temperature at first pitch and rain possible in the seventh inning, the stadium’s roof was closed on Monday.

That meant the B-1B Lancer flyover looked like this …

A plane flying over an enclosed building. Spectacular!

You’d think that the Brewers would try to make an exception with the roof just for the flyover, but it didn’t quite work out that way. Fans also had plenty of jokes about the flyover with a closed roof.

Milwaukee Brewers scoreboard perfectly trolled Joc Pederson’s fantasy team before the NFL season-opener

Brewers: 1, Pederson: 0

MLB center fielder Joc Pederson is a man of many talents.

He’s a two-time MLB world champion, a two-time MLB All-Star and apparently and most importantly, an expert navigator of fantasy football league rules.

In case you’re out of the loop, Pederson and current Boston Red Sox outfielder Tommy Pham got into a little dispute over the rules and roster management of a fantasy football league the two participate in. One thing led to another earlier this season and Pham greeted Pederson in the outfield, prior to a game, with a slap to the face.

The Milwaukee Brewers’ scoreboard at American Family Field made sure to jokingly boost Pederson’s fantasy football resume before his at-bat for the San Francisco Giants during game on Thursday afternoon.

Pederson claims he was doing nothing illegal in the fantasy league, just simply opting to keep one of the players locked in the IR spot.

Anyways, Pham was suspended, which makes this story even wilder. And between the slap and the suspension, it’ll probably never go away.

So, hats off to the Brewers. This little jab at Pederson is pretty hilarious.

The Brewers’ mascot just joined in on making fun of the Dodgers reporter who broke his arms and ribs going down the slide

This poor, poor reporter.

Just when you think things can’t get much more embarrassing for Dodgers reporter David Vassegh, the jokes go up another notch.

For those of you who don’t know, Vassegh is the reporter who has been all over the internet after hurting himself going down the Milwaukee Brewers’ slide. This dude has been the main character of the day and not in a good way.

He was going too fast down the slide, hit the wall and literally broke bones. His arm and six ribs, to be exact. That’s a lot.

It hasn’t stopped everyone from making fun of the poor guy, though. The Brewers are actually leaning in on it. They hit him with the ol’ body outline treatment earlier on Thursday.

And now? Now? He’s got Bernie the Brewer making fun of him on Twitter. Bernie the Brewer, y’all.

You know you’re down bad when this guy has jokes for you. He’s got a handlebar mustache. Look at his dumb mascot head. It’s totally ridiculous.

Poor, poor DV, man. Everyone is just laughing at the dude but he’s taking it like a champ somehow.

A Dodgers reporter attempted to ride the Brewers’ home run slide and it did not go well

Let’s just say the slide down did NOT go as planned!

When the Dodgers took on the Brewers (+150) in Milwaukee on Thursday night, the L.A. broadcast decided to put their on-field reporter, David Vassegh, on a special assignment.

He was going to ride the Brewers’ famous home run slide — aka Bernie’s Slide — at American Family Field. Most of the time, the titular Bernie Brewer mascot rides the slide for a bit of fun after one of the hometown players mashes a dinger. Though, fans can purchase tickets for some behind-the-scenes fun to get the whole slide experience for themselves.

Unfortunately for Vassegh, his ride didn’t exactly go as intended, as he ultimately ended up in a cast after a bumpy landing:

The good news is that Vassegh appeared to be OK — save for the cast. That probably also explains why broadcasts Joe Davis and Nomar Garciaparra felt so comfortable cracking up about his accident. On that note — give the person on the broadcast crew who cut to Vassegh holding up his cast and smiling immediately after the clip of his slide down. Bravo, folks. No notes.

To Vassegh’s credit, he was a good sport about his slide mishap, saying, “I tried to play it up Shaqtin’ a Fool style … and you’re looking at the fool.”

Brewers first baseman Rowdy Tellez gave us all the thick boy joy after stealing a base and the internet loved it

Rowdy Tellez was the epitome of thick boy joy after stealing this base

There’s something about baseball, man. It just feels like one of the most relatable sports out there.

No, before you ask, I have very little in common with the elite athletes of the MLB. My Moneyball scouting report would be absolute garbage. I can’t hit a ball coming at me at a speed of 97 mph with a wooden stick. I also can’t throw a ball that fast either. That stuff is hard and that’s why these folks are in the MLB.

But there was something about Rowdy Tellez rumbling his way to second base for a steal that just connected with me, man.

Like, if I were a baseball player right now? This is probably what I look like trying to steal a base. Completely ridiculous.

LOOK. AT. MY. GUY. With the celebration to boot, too.

That’s some thicc boi joy right there if I’ve ever seen it. We absolutely love to see it, by the way. We need more of this in the world.

Will we get another one from Rowdy? Eric Lauer seems to think so.

But Rowdy has other ideas.

I love how my guy knows he’s a meme now. “I can’t wait for all the memes of cheeseburgers or hotdogs floating in front of me,” he said.

That was fun. It doesn’t sound like we’ll get another anytime soon, though. Even if this is the end of our journey and we’ve rumbled as far as we can rumble on the diamond, this was still a fun time. We will never forget this, Rowdy. Never.

Fans absolutely loved it all.
