30 Browns prospects in 30 days: Mike Morris, EDGE, Michigan

A talented rusher with upside could be just what the Browns need.

Drafting young and cost-effective depth at edge rusher is a must-have for this year’s Cleveland Browns 2023 NFL Draft class. A young defensive lineman with talent and upside that the team could target is Michigan’s Mike Morris. Morris is a fun player with the versatility to play both inside and outside of the defensive line at 6-foot-6 and 278 pounds.

Morris is a strong player with a solid base and the ability to set the edge in the run game. He plays with a great motor and the ability to recognize what is happening in front of him quickly. Morris is a gap penetrator against the run from the inside and his overall versatility is something the Browns have shown is important to them.

There was a jump in his pass rush skills in his final season that lead him to 7.5 sacks in 2022. He still needs to develop a better pass-rush plan he is a versatile player whose ability to provide depth is something to like.

5 defensive prospects the Seahawks have met with at the 2023 NFL Scouting Combine

Here are all of the defensive prospects that Seattle has met with so far at the 2023 NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis, according to Walter Football.

The Seattle Seahawks were at their best when they dominated the NFL defensively. For four straight seasons (2012-2015) they had the top defense in the league. While nobody can maintain a run like that forever, the results since then have been mostly underwhelming and disappointing. Pete Carroll admitted as much in his end-of-season press conference, when he told reporters that the ongoing defensive issues are “killing him.” Whatever they try schematically, the Seahawks will never get back to being an elite defense unless they get some serious upgrades at several positions.

Good news: this year Seattle has five picks in the first three rounds of the draft and the second-most capital all together. That puts them in rare position to get some real difference-makers on defense. So, who’s on their list? There are at least a few names we know for sure they’re interested in.

Zach Harrison responds to Michigan player “Edge Rush U” claim

Who’s had the best edge rushers in college football? #GoBucks

When it comes to our words, sometimes less is more. Former Ohio State defensive end, Zach Harrison, responded very simply to a question posed on the Pro Football Focus Twitter page. “No.”

The folks at PFF asked the question “Is Michigan Edge Rush U?” This was in response to former Wolverine Mike Morris being asked who would step up for Jim Harbaugh’s club in the coming season at the edge. The response from Morris was “We edge rush U”, basically saying the next crop will be as good as the previous.

As you can imagine, there was a variety of commentary on the subject, but the best answer was a one-word response from Harrison… “No.”

Yes, we understand Michigan has had the upper hand the past two seasons in The Game, and even Buckeye most fans would have to admit the Wolverines have had the better overall defense in those games. However, Harrison is right. Let’s not jump the gun here.

We cannot argue that Michigan has had some outstanding pass rushers in recent history. But let’s not forget who Ohio State has produced in recent memory as well. The Bosa brothers and Chase Young are enough to make the case for OSU by themselves. And there are plenty more to choose from.

Of course, it’s a matter of opinion and each side will make a case for its team. But at the end of the day, we all know there’s only one correct answer anyway. Go Buckeyes!

Touting Michigan football as edge rush U, Mike Morris excited about one DE

#Michigan has an incredible track record with edge rushers under Jim Harbaugh. #GoBlue

A year ago, as all eyes watching Michigan football were curious who would rush the passer after the departures of Aidan Hutchinson and David Ojabo, those in the know touted defensive end Mike Morris. That proved prescient; he led the team in sacks and was a force coming off the edge.

But now, the Wolverines have a similar problem, with the two sack leaders — Morris and Eyabi Okie, who transferred to Charlotte, following Biff Poggi — no longer in Ann Arbor.

Still, Morris is confident in those who come after him. Speaking to reporters at the NFL scouting combine on Wednesday, he noted Michigan has essentially been plug-and-play along the defensive front, with the starting edge rushers succeeding throughout the Harbaugh era. While he isn’t sure who will be the best of the bunch, he’s optimistic given the talent.

“Man, in the edge group, I have no idea, because there are so many great guys,” Morris said at the combine. “So many great guys going in. Some really good guys coming in that are really good, as well. Some freshmen that are really good, some juniors that are seniors that are going to step up.

“We edge rush U., so there’s going to be a person every single year coming up.”

Two of the likely candidates are starter Jaylen Harrell, who’s a quasi-outside linebacker reminiscent of Josh Uche, and senior Braiden McGregor, who came on strongly late in the year.

When it comes to McGregor, Morris had particular shining words given his athletic ability.

“Jaylen’s a sam that can rush the passer on third down, and Braiden is an athletic freak, and I think both of them are going to do really, really well,” Morris said. “Jaylen stepped up when I was hurt in the Purdue game.

“Braiden had a lot of good snaps this year as well. He came in clutch in the Michigan State game with a sack. Both of them can do really good things.”

Though not mentioned here, Derrick Moore is another possibility as he enters his second year. Moore saw a decent amount of time in his freshman season, but players tend to make big jumps going from Year 1 to Year 2. Additionally, TJ Guy got more involved in the rotation, and it would be interesting to see if a player like former four-star Kechaun Bennett takes off. Both are now upperclassmen.

Regardless, Michigan will miss Morris’ production, but considering that every starter in the Jim Harbaugh era at edge rusher who has gone to the NFL has been no worse than a third-round pick (Mike Danna, a backup, was even a fifth-round selection), the maize and blue are likely in good hands.

Who were the Browns mocked this week across the various networks?

With just one game left to play tomorrow, as the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles battle in the Super Bowl, the offseason gets set for full steam ahead when the new league year quickly follows. This means the 2023 NFL Draft will be here in the blink of an eye, and the Cleveland Browns will need to take advantage. Here we conduct a mock draft round-up to see who various outlets are sending to the Browns in their 2023 NFL Mock Drafts. Two names became a common theme in the form of Florida defensive tackle Gervon Dexter and USC defensive lineman Tuli Tuipulotu.

Browns get Jim Schwartz a new DT in Gervon Dexter in 2023 NFL Mock Draft

The Browns will need to get Jim Schwartz some new defensive tackles. They add a young one here in this mock draft.

After the hiring of Jim Schwartz as their next defensive coordinator, the Cleveland Browns now have to prioritize a position he loves to isolate against the pass: defensive tackle. While they can do this during free agency, look for the Browns to add another young name in the 2023 NFL Draft as well after adding Perrion Winfrey a year ago. Here in this 2023 NFL Mock Draft, the Browns do just that with their first round pick in the form of Florida’s Gervon Dexter.

With eight picks in the 2023 NFL Draft, what damage can the Browns do and what talent can they add to their roster? Here is a mock draft as the Browns welcome their new defensive coordinator.
