Broncos get D grade for signing right tackle Mike McGlinchey

Touchdown Wire was not impressed with the contract the Broncos gave Mike McGlinchey, giving the team a “D” grade for the signing.

In the first two hours of free agency, the Denver Broncos rebuilt their offensive line in a big way. One of the first blocks to fall came with offensive tackle Mike McGlinchey, a former San Francisco 49er. McGlinchey inked a deal for $87.5 million over five years.

McGlinchey played in every game last season for the Niners, with his 2021 season limited with an injury.

According to Touchdown Wire’s Doug Farrar, McGlinchey has allowed five sacks and at least 20 quarterback hurries during each year of his career.

Farrar questioned the free agent move, giving it a “D” grade overall. His argument, however, comes down to the money Denver gave him. Right now, McGlinchey is going to be one of the top-five highest-paid tackles in the NFL. With those numbers, Farrar argues that because of the price alone, it may be a bad deal for the Broncos.

Besides the money, this move shored up the offensive front in a BIG way. McGlinchey brings playoff experience with mobile quarterbacks, and will be a huge help in front of Russell Wilson. McGlinchey will aim to prove Farrar wrong in 2023.

Broncos officially announce 6 free agent signings

The Broncos have officially confirmed six of their free agent signings.

The NFL’s new league year started at 2:00 p.m. MT on Wednesday, marking the official start of free agency.

It felt a bit anticlimactic because most of the NFL’s biggest free agents already agreed to terms with teams on Monday and Tuesday. Those deals did not become official until Wednesday, but it was just a formality.

The Denver Broncos, for example, agreed to terms with six free agents on Monday and two more on Tuesday. Since the start of the new league year, the team has officially announced six of their signings so far, and the rest will be announced soon.

Denver has confirmed the signings of OL Ben Powers, QB Jarrett Stidham, OT Mike McGlinchey, TE Chris Manhertz, LB Alex Singleton and DL Zach Allen so far. Three more players — RB Samaje Perine, FB Michael Burton and CB/KR Tremon Smith — just have to dot the i’s and cross the t’s before their deals become official.

The Broncos also brought back three of their exclusive rights free agents on one-year tenders: punter Corliss Waitman, offensive lineman Quinn Bailey and linebacker Jonas Griffith.

Here’s a quick recap of Denver’s free agent signings, including both the official and not-yet-quite-official contracts.

Check out these highlights of new Broncos right tackle Mike McGlinchey

The Broncos have a new right tackle in Mike McGlinchey! Here’s how he played against the Raiders and Broncos last season.

The Denver Broncos agreed to terms on a five-year, $87.5 million contract with San Francisco 49ers right tackle Mike McGlinchey on Monday.

The deal won’t become official until the NFL’s new league year begins on Wednesday, but that seems to be just a formality.

Once official, the signing will provide a huge boost to the right side of Denver’s offensive line. The Broncos have been seeking a long-term solution at right tackle for years, and McGlinchey seems poised to fill that need.

Touchdown Wire’s Doug Farrar ranked McGlinchey No. 50 on his list of the Top 151 free agents this spring. McGlinchey was the third-ranked offensive tackle on Farrar’s list.

Last year, McGlinchey had a strong showing against Las Vegas Raiders defensive lineman Maxx Crosby, who has been a thorn in the side of Denver’s offensive line in recent seasons.

McGlinchey also had a solid performance against the Broncos last year:

Once the signing becomes official, Denver will have its two offensive tackle spots set with Garett Bolles on the left and McGlinchey on the right.

9 winners and losers (everyone waiting on Aaron Rodgers) from Day 1 of NFL free agency

The Bears had a BIG day. Everyone hoping for some real Aaron Rodgers news did not.

What a wild (and weary) way to start this year’s NFL free agency.

At the horn of the negotiation window (there are other creative names for it!), a flurry of deals for foundational talents and upside players started to fly in. It’s almost as if these contracts were talked about in advance. (Noooo, that would never happen. Impossible!)

For example, in Chicago, the Bears revamped their defense. In Denver, the Broncos rebuilt an offensive line in front of Russell Wilson on the fly. What a productive day for both franchises all around.

And in Green Bay and New York?

Well, both the Packers and Jets kind of just hung around a swing together, hoping their mutual misery in waiting over Aaron Rodgers would soon conclude. Some NFL personalities were right there with them, wading in frustration. Who am I kidding? So were we.

As we head into the second day of the 2023 NFL free agency period, let’s break down some of the more notable winners and losers from Day 1.

NFL News: Former Notre Dame star reportedly agrees to monster deal with Broncos

Massive payday for the former Notre Dame standout!

While at Notre Dame, [autotag]Harry Hiestand[/autotag] helped develop a ridiculous number of players into high NFL draft picks despite not being on the Fighting Irish coaching staff for all that long. One of those former players that he helped develop into a first-round draft pick is reportedly about to get a huge pay day.

According to Ian Rapoport, [autotag]Mike McGlinchey[/autotag] has agreed to a monster deal with the Denver Broncos. Rapoport reported the deal is for five years and worth $87.5 million. In addition, over $50 million is guaranteed.

Personally, I’m a fan of McGlinchey’s and think he’s solid, but I am surprised he got that kind of money.  Good for him and good for his agent.

McGlinchey starred at Notre Dame before being selected by the San Francisco 49ers with the ninth pick in the 2018 NFL draft. He played there for five seasons, helping them to an appearance in Super Bowl 54.

2023 NFL Free Agency: Grading all the major transactions

Touchdown Wire’s Doug Farrar, armed with tape and metrics, grades all the impact (almost) signings in the 2023 NFL free agency period.

Now that the NFL’s legal tampering period has begun, the vapor-deals for impending free agents, who can officially sign their contracts when the new league year begins at 4:00 p.m. EST on Wednesday, March 15, are coming thick and fast. While none of those deals are officially official, they’re as official as they can be from a legal perspective, and we can go with the years and numbers as written by various NFL insiders.

So, with that in mind, it’s time to assign grades to these deals months before we have seen these players in their new schemes, working with their new coaches, and aligning with their new players. It’s an inexact science at best, but based on tape and metrics to date, as well as how these players’ new teams are building their rosters in this free agency period, we have enough of an idea to at least opine on the transactions.

Here are our far-too-early grades for all the impact (almost) free agent signings in 2023.

Twitter reacts to Broncos reaching 5-year deal with Mike McGlinchey

The Broncos have agreed to terms on a 5-year deal with Mike McGlinchey. Here’s a sampling of how Twitter reacted to the news.

The Denver Broncos have agreed to terms with right tackle Mike McGlinchey on a five-year, $87.5 million contract. The deal won’t become official until Wednesday, but that seems to be just a formality.

Here’s a sampling of how Twitter reacted to the news.

Mike McGlinchey to sign with Denver Broncos

The #49ers officially have an opening at right tackle. Mike McGlinchey is heading to the Denver Broncos.

The 49ers are officially in the market for a new starting right tackle. Free agent RT Mike McGlinchey has agreed to a contract with the Denver Broncos per NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport. McGlinchey is receiving a five-year deal worth $87.5 million and over $50 million guaranteed.

McGlinchey was the 49ers’ first-round pick in 2018, and he stepped in immediately to become one of the best run blocking tackles in the league. While he remained a strong run blocker, he had ups and downs as a pass blocker. Inconsistency in pass protection was a big reason San Francisco wasn’t willing to shell out big money for the former No. 9 overall selection.

It looks like 2020 fifth-round pick Colton McKivitz is the frontrunner to replace McGlinchey after signing a two-year extension. A cheaper free agent or a 2023 draft pick could also wind up being in the mix.
