Five-star wide receiver Mike Matthews ‘loved the energy’ at Auburn’s practice

It was his second visit to the Plains.

The Auburn Tigers hosted five-star wide receiver [autotag]Mike Matthews[/autotag] on an unofficial visit Friday and they are starting to become a factor in his recruitment.

It was his second visit to the Plains and Matthews, who included Auburn in his top 12 schools, told Steve Wiltfong of 247Sports that the visit “went good.”

He was impressed with the energy Auburn had at practice and enjoyed getting to meet with [autotag]Hugh Freeze[/autotag] and wide receivers coach [autotag]Marcus Davis[/autotag].

Matthews is the No. 6 overall player and No. 1 wide receiver in the 247Sports Composite ranking. The Lilburn native is also the No. 2 player from Georgia.

His mother Regina was with him and also had a great time.

“On our second visit to Auburn, we had a great sunny day to watch practice, put names/voices with faces and tour the new football facilities,” she told Wiltfong. “Mike had the opportunity to see the practice up close and personal and speak with the great football coaching staff. The Auburn campus is so picturesque and we enjoyed our time there. It is important to experience a day like that during the recruiting process.”

The visit gives Auburn a chance for the talented wide receiver who has also unofficially visited Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, and has scheduled an official visit to USC.

The 6-foot-1, 180-pounder caught 48 passes for 1,030 yards and nine touchdowns as a junior for Parkview High School. On defense, he made 20 tackles and picked off one pass as a safety.

Alabama makes top 12 for 2024 5-Star WR Mike Matthews

2024 wide receiver Mike Matthews released his top-12 on Tuesday evening. The Crimson Tide were one of the schools that made the cut.

Alabama was recently listed as a finalist to land 2024 five-star wide Mike Matthews.

Matthews plays wide receiver for Parkview High School in Lilburn, Georgia. As a junior, he hauled in 48 receptions for 1,030 receiving yards and nine touchdowns. He helped lead the Panthers to the second round of the playoffs last season.

As for his recruitment, Matthews has taken a number of visits. The schools that he has visited the most are Clemson and Georgia. He has taken a combined nine visits to those schools.

However, he is set to unofficially visit Alabama on April 5. It will be his third trip to Tuscaloosa. There is mutual interest between he and the coaching staff.

In an interview with Mike Singer of Blue and Gold, Matthews had this to say  about the Crimson Tide:

“The Crimson Tide, [it’s] really self-explanatory,” Matthews added, “Just a great atmosphere, a great team, just known for being great. That’s always been a top school for me. Being able to sit down and talk to (head) coach (Nick) Saban, how how he (knows your) name, everything that I’m good at above all, things like that, it’s really interesting to me.”

Roll Tide Wire breaks down Matthews’ recruiting profile.

Auburn makes top 12 for 5-star wide receiver Mike Matthews

The Tigers have offered him a scholarship in football and basketball.

Five-star wide receiver [autotag]Mike Matthews[/autotag] is one of Auburn’s top targets and on Tuesday he put the Tigers in his top 12 schools.

The Lilburn, Georgia product is deciding between Auburn, Alabama, Clemson, Georgia, Colorado, USC, Tennessee, LSU, Michigan, Texas A&M, Arkansas, and Ohio State.

Matthews is the No. 6 overall player and No. 2 wide receiver in the 247Sports Composite ranking. He is also the No. 2 player from Georgia.

Matthews doesn’t just have an offer from [autotag]Hugh Freeze[/autotag] and the football program, [autotag]Bruce Pearl[/autotag] extended him an offer back in January and he has the opportunity to play both sports on the Plains.

His best sport is football and he took his first trip to see Freeze on Wednesday. He visited for a basketball game in February but was unable to meet with the football staff due to it being a dead period.

He caught 48 passes for 1,030 yards and nine touchdowns as a junior for Parkview High School. On defense, he made 20 tackles and picked off one pass as a safety.

5-star WR Mike Matthews names his top schools

Georgia football has made Mike Matthews’ top 12 schools. Who else is in the mix?

Five-star wide receiver recruit Mike Matthews is one of the top recruits in the class of 2024. The five-star plays high school football for Parkview High School in Lilburn, Georgia.

Mike Matthews is the sixth-ranked player in the junior class and the second-ranked wide receiver. Matthews is the second-ranked recruit in Georgia, per 247Sports. He plays both defensive back and wide receiver for Parkview High School.

The 6-foot-2, 180-pound receiver also plays basketball. Matthews is a versatile athlete with excellent explosiveness.

Matthews visited Athens for the Georgia versus Kent State game in the fall of 2022. He plans to play in the 2024 Under Armour All-America Game.

Impressively, the five-star sports a dual scholarship offer from the Auburn Tigers for both football and basketball. Not many recruits earn dual scholarship offers.

As a wide receiver, Matthews shows great speed and acceleration. He is a good route runner and gets a lot of separation.

The five-star recruit puts Georgia, Arkansas, Ohio State, Alabama, Tennessee, LSU, Michigan, Clemson, Auburn, Colorado, USC, and Texas A&M in his top schools.

The Parkview superstar named his top 12 schools via Twitter:

5-star WR trims list, still considering LSU

The Tigers are looking to pull off their biggest recruiting win yet in the 2024 class.

After signing a talented wide receiver class in 2023, LSU is looking to land a premier player at the position in 2024.

Five-star Lilburn (Ga.) Parkview receiver [autotag]Mike Matthews[/autotag] recently trimmed the list of programs he’s considering down to 12, and LSU made the cut. Coach [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] and the Tigers are joined by Alabama, Clemson, Georgia, Auburn, Colorado, USC, Tennessee, Michigan, Texas A&M, Arkansas and Ohio State.

Matthews is an elite prospect in the 2024 class. The 6-foot-1, 180-pound player currently ranks as the No. 2 receiver and No. 6 overall player nationally, per the 247Sports Composite Rankings. LSU offered Matthews back in June, but it hasn’t gotten him on campus for a visit yet.

His recruitment still seems to be fairly open-ended. He holds no Crystal Ball projections from 247Sports, and though Georgia is a slim favorite per the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine, there seems to be no clear leader at this moment.

LSU will likely need a visit soon (and a successful one, at that) to stay in the mix here, but landing a player like Matthews — who would immediately become the highest-ranked commit in the class — would work wonders for a class that already currently ranks second nationally.

2024 5-Star WR Mike Matthews places Texas A&M in his Top 12 program list

Texas A&M is still standing among 2024 5-star WR Mike Matthews Top 12 program list

Texas A&M head coach Jimbo Fisher is in full-fledged recruiting mode outside of spring football practice this month, as a number of top prospects in the 2024 cycle are beginning to narrow down their options heading into the summer months, and on Tuesday, 5-star wide receiver Mike Matthews released his much anticipated Top 12 program list, which happened to include the Aggies.

Without any indication that this is his final list before his undetermined commitment date, Matthews includes the following schools: Alabama, Clemson, Georgia, Auburn, Colorado, USC, Tennessee, LSU, Missouri, Arkansas, Ohio State, and of course, Texas A&M.

Out of Parkview High School in Lilburn, Georgia, Matthews is the 10th player and 4th wide receiver in the 2024 class, and the 2nd-ranked player in Georgia, and perhaps the most versatile athlete in the entire class. In scouting reports for 247Sports analyst Andrew Ivins, Mike Matthews is just on the periphery of becoming a two-way player at the FBS level:

A talented two-way athlete that some colleges view as a wide receiver long-term while others think he’s a future all-conference safety. Followed breakout sophomore season up with a monster junior campaign on offense as he averaged 21.5 yards per catch, totaling 1,030 yards and nine touchdowns through the air in the Peach State’s highest-classification. At one point reported a basketball offer from Mississippi State, and it’s pretty easy to see why as he’s extremely coordinated in almost everything he does and is always putting himself in position to make a play. Long-speed at point was a bit of a question mark, but tested exceptionally well spring before 12th grade year, clocking one of the fastest 40-yard dash times at a loaded camp outside of Atlanta. Tape also backs up the number as he’s constantly pulling away from defenders and creating separation on deeper routes. On the other side of the ball, has flashed the ability to quickly close gaps and get to the catch point while playing more of a center-field role. Must eventually pick a position, but should be viewed as one of the top overall talents in the 2024 cycle given how he moves out on the perimeter. NFL upside if he can keep progressing.

During his 2022 junior season as both wide receiver and safety, Matthews recorded 48 receptions for 1,031 yards and 10 TD on offense, while totaling 23 tackles and 2 INT on defense. Matthews has yet to visit Texas A&M, but something tells me a trip to College Station could be right around the corner sooner than later.

Michigan football makes top group for elite 5-star WR in SEC country

May be a long shot, but good to see #Michigan trending here. #GoBlue

The maize and blue are heating up on the recruiting front, and Michigan football is starting to take some big swings at big-time players.

The question is, will it hit a home run or strike out?

Elite wide receivers are worth taking a swing at because they are so hard to come by. In the Jim Harbaugh era, the maize and blue have landed exactly one five-star at the position (Donovan Peoples-Jones). Position coach Ron Bellamy has his eyes on a few others, and one just put the Wolverines in his top group.

Sure, a top 12 isn’t exactly whittling things down, but that’s where the maize and blue landed in 2024 Lilburn (Georgia) Parkview five-star WR Mike Matthew’s list.

Naturally, Michigan has stiff competition: Georgia, Alabama, Ohio State, Clemson, Auburn, Colorado, USC, Texas A&M, LSU, Arkansas and Tennessee. You know, pretty much every major player on the college football scene.

Matthews is ranked No. 6 overall by the 247Sports composite and is the No. 2 wide receiver in Georgia. He has no 247Sports crystal ball predictions at this time.

Matthews is the No. 8 overall prospect in the class of 2024 and is rated a five-star prospect by three of the four major recruiting outlets. He ranks as the No. 3 wide receiver and No. 2 player in the state of Georgia, according to the On3 Sports industry rankings.

Tennessee football recruiting: Vols’ top 2024 wide receiver targets

He earned Gwinnett County Wide Receiver of the Year honors last season. Matthews also was named first-team All-State, All-County and All-Region as a junior. He finished his junior season with 48 receptions, 1,031 receiving yards and 10 receiving touchdowns.
