Bowl game roundup: Where do the experts think the Texas Longhorns are headed?

Four expert picks and four different bowl game projections. Could the Texas Longhorns be heading for a matchup with former coach Mack Brown?

While the status is up in the air on if the Texas Longhorns will play the Kansas Jayhawks on Saturday, there is no question they will go bowling this year. The Longhorns paused all football activities after three positive tests were revealed on Sunday following their 69-31 victory over Kansas State.

Currently the Longhorns sit third in Big 12 standings behind two teams that defeated them this year. The Iowa State Cyclones are No. 1 with a record of 8-2, the Oklahoma Sooners are No. 2. They could match Iowa State with an identical 8-2 record if they beat West Virginia on Saturday.

Texas could finish anywhere from the No. 3 slot to No. 5. It all will depend on the outcome of this week. They are just ahead of Oklahoma State due to their head-to-head matchup in Stillwater.

The question remains of where they will be heading. Depending on which expert’s projections you read, you could get different answers. In fact, based on the four projections we are highlighting, there are four different answers.

Ole Miss (2-5) vs Mississippi State (3-4) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on the NFL, go to BetMGM

Why Mississippi State Will Win

The Bulldogs don’t have the results, but they’re playing better.

It’s not the high-flying fun show it was supposed to be under Mike Leach – especially after the brilliant performance in the win over LSU to start the season – but Will Rogers and the passing game were fine against Georgia – he hit 79% of his passes for 336 yards and a touchdown with no interceptions – and now it’s time to have some fun against the SEC’s worst defense.

Ole Miss has allowed more than 400 yards against everyone but Arkansas – who came up with 394 yards – thanks to a bad pass D, a worse run defense, and with a total inability to get off the field.

Mississippi State has to control the clock, own third downs, and rely on its defense that’s been terrific against the run and is solid at taking the ball away. Against Ole Miss, just hold serve defensively, don’t turn the ball over, and this should be interesting.

Why Ole Miss Will Win

The Ole Miss passing game keeps getting better and better as the offense keeps getting stronger and stronger.

Vanderbilt and South Carolina might not be killers, but the Rebels were able to roll at will and did what they were supposed to with close to 400 rushing yards in the two games, almost 1,000 yards through the air, and with close to 1,350 yards of total O.

This is the offense Mississippi State was supposed to have.

QB Matt Corral has been flawless, hitting 92% of his passes for 925 yards and ten touchdowns with no interceptions in the last two games. He’s been incredible, and so has …

What’s Going To Happen

Elijah Moore.

In case you forgot, last year, Moore caught three passes for 35 yards and a score in the Egg Bowl, with his touchdown making it 21-20 Mississippi State in the final moments.

He celebrated with a mimicking peeing dog thing in the end zone, got flagged for a personal foul that moved back the extra point attempt, the try failed, Ole Miss lost, head coach Matt Luke was eventually sacked, the Lane Train rolled into town, and …

Over the last two games, Moore has caught 25 passes for 563 yards and five touchdowns. He failed to come up with double-digit grabs just once all year, and this time around he’ll explode against the Bulldogs.

Mississippi State will put up a good fight in the rivalry game – the defense is good enough to keep this from getting ugly, but Lane Kiffin will win the first round over Mike Leach.

Watch: Georgia sack seals 31-24 win vs. Mississippi State

Check out Georgia’s sack that sealed a close win for the Bulldogs vs. Mississippi State in Athens. Details and analysis here.

I don’t think anyone saw this game shaking out the way it did but here we are, four pressure-filled quarters later and Georgia gets a close win at home vs. Mississippi State 31-24.

The Bulldogs rushing attack was stuffed, only gaining eight yards the entire game, but JT Daniels was incredible in his first career start as a Georgia Bulldog, he completed 28 of 38 passes for 401 yards and four touchdowns.

Like the running game, the heralded UGA defense struggled mightily, especially on getting Mississippi State off the field.

The Bulldogs from Starkville converted on 7 of 13 first downs on their way to 358 total yards, including 336 yards passing and 22 yards rushing.

But even in a game where things didn’t go according to plan, the Georgia defense came up clutch when the team needed it most, sacking MSU quarterback Will Rodgers to seal the game for the Dawgs.

What a play by star linebacker and game captain Azeez Ojulari.

Watch it here:

I loved what I saw from JT Daniels and these Bulldog receivers tonight.

Freshman Trey Burton had 8 catches for 197 yards and two touchdowns while star sophomore George Pickens caught 8 passes for 87 yards and a touchdown.

Things are looking good for 2021, DawgNation!

What to expect from JT Daniels vs. Mississippi State

USC transfer quarterback JT Daniels is set to make his first start as a Georgia Bulldog vs. Mississippi State. Here’s what to expect.

We are now in the JT Daniels chapter of the ever stressful Georgia quarterback drama.

The USC transfer quarterback is set to make his first career start as a Georgia Bulldog vs. Mississippi State in Athens on Saturday night.

After redshirt freshman D’Wan Mathis’ start at signal caller vs. Arkansas in the season-opener, junior Stetson Bennett has received the majority of the snaps and has started each game until this week, which is due, in part, to a shoulder separation injury suffered in the loss to Florida.

We expected to see Daniels get on the field a bit earlier than the seventh game of the season and there were plenty of opportunities to get his feet wet, however Daniels’ mobility on his surgically repaired left knee has been an issue.

As the season has progressed, Georgia coach Kirby Smart has been more open about Daniels’ knee and mobility concerns.

“His mobility has been better,” Smart said in a press conference Wednesday.

As a freshman at USC in 2018, Daniels threw for 2,672 yards with 14 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. He entered the transfer portal in mid-April after his sophomore season was derailed by an ACL tear.

Daniels was the third rated quarterback in the 2018 recruiting class behind Trevor Lawrence and Justin Fields and while at USC, he showed flashes of an elite passer, like here on his first touchdown pass of his collegiate career.

But what kind of expectations should Georgia fans have for Daniels in his first start?

Put simply, the only expectations DawgNation should have is a Georgia win.

Coach Mike Leach and the Bulldogs from Starkville are limping into Athens. 17 players have either opted-out of this season or have transferred on top of more players being forced to miss tonight’s game because of COVID testing.

In turn, Georgia should make quick work of Mississippi State tonight and Daniels should preform well as a result, but let’s not get ahead of ourselves here and make sure to remember who we are playing.

I’m looking for Daniels to show command of the offense by hitting the easy throws that we haven’t been able to hit all season.

Offensive coordinator Todd Monken and company have done a good job of getting guys open, but Bennett and Mathis’ inaccuracy has been the issue.

If Daniels can hit those easy throws, show leadership and protect the football, I think we can walk away from this one feeling good about 2021.

Georgia vs. Mississippi State: Expert picks and predictions

No. 13 Georgia (4-2) takes on Mississippi State (2-4) tonight at 7:30 p.m. on SEC Network. Here’s how we see the game going.

No. 13 Georgia (4-2) takes on Mississippi State (2-4) tonight at 7:30 p.m. on SEC Network.

Coach Mike Leach and the Bulldogs from Starkville have struggled to get anything going after a big win at LSU to start the season.

Since then, Mississippi State has looked miserable offensively. Stanford transfer quarterback K.J. Costello and freshman Will Rodgers have combined to throw 14 interceptions to only 8 touchdowns.

And on defense, things don’t look much better. Statistically the Bulldogs rank No. 35 in the country allowing 359 yards per game, but the real issue is depth after COVID testing has limited Mississippi State’s roster to under 53 scholarship players.

That said, the game is on and Georgia, led by new starting quarterback JT Daniels, is looking to avenge a bad loss to Florida in Jacksonville.

UGA Wire staff has put together a number of score, stat and game predictions ahead of Saturday night’s matchup.

No. 13 Georgia is set to take on Mississippi State tonight at 7:30 p.m. on the SEC Network.

USC transfer quarterback J.T. Daniels is expected to make his first career start as a Georgia Bulldog after starter Stetson Bennett suffered a separated shoulder in the loss to Florida two weeks ago.

Mississippi State, 2-4 on the year, comes to Athens riddled with roster shakeups as 17 players have either opted-out or transferred and more are unavailable due to COVID testing.

Here is what Mississippi State media is saying about Georgia:

3 things to watch for in Mississippi State vs Georgia football game

“Georgia is reportedly starting Southern California transfer JT Daniels, who hasn’t played one snap all season. Junior Stetson Bennett has started every game for UGA, but he is still hampered by a shoulder injury he sustained against Florida on Nov. 7.”

Opponent preview: Georgia’s offense

By Collin Wilmes, SBNation

“Redshirt sophomore quarterback JT Daniels, a former five-star recruit who transferred from USC to Georgia earlier this year, is expected to make his long-awaited Georgia debut. Daniels was the starter at USC before suffering a season-ending torn ACL in the first game of last season. The 6-foot-3, 210-pounder threw for 2,672 yards, 14 touchdowns and 10 interceptions in 11 games as a freshman.”

BONEYARD: A look ahead at Georgia

By Steve Robertson, 247sports

“Transfer J.T. Daniels is rumored to be the favorite to start under center this weekend. Daniels was one of the most highly coveted quarterbacks his senior season. Smart’s squad has been hurt by some attrition in the quarterback room, so there was more than enough room in the Bulldog inn for Daniels. Georgia always has skill position players, but the silver britched line of thinking is that some spotty quarterback play has held them back this season. There is no shame in losing to Alabama and Florida, but Georgia fans hoped and expected more this year.”

How to watch, listen or stream Georgia vs. Mississippi State

It’s the battle of the Bulldogs, No. 13 Georgia vs. Mississippi State Saturday night in Athens. Here’s how to watch, listen or stream.

No. 13 Georgia vs. Mississippi State is set to be played after a long week full of questions on whether or not Mississippi State would be able to field enough players to compete due to COVID testing.

The Bulldogs from Starkville are 2-4 on the year and coming off of a win vs. Vanderbilt two weeks ago before missing last week after their game vs. Auburn was postponed.

Georgia, coming off of a postponement of its own, looks to finally avenge a tough loss in Jacksonville with a new face at quarterback.

USC transfer J.T. Daniels is set to get his first career start as a Bulldog after taking over for junior Stetson Bennett, who separated his shoulder vs. Florida.

Captains: Linebacker Azeez Ojulari, tackle Jamaree Salyer and receiver Kearis Jackson.

Matchup predictor: Georgia has a 93.7% chance to win, according to ESPN’s Football Power Index.

Series history: The Georgia Bulldogs lead the overall series with the Mississippi State Bulldogs 18-6. UGA is 11-1 against the other Bulldogs in their last 12 contests dating back to 1975, with the most recent matchup coming in 2017, a 31-3 Georgia win.

Prediction:

With 17 players lost to either opt-out or transfer and more lost to COVID testing, Mike Leach and the Bulldogs from Starkville are in for a very long day.

UGA is not happy about what happened in Jacksonville, so with Mississippi State’s struggles on offense and their lack of experience on defense – it’s going to be all Georgia.

Look for quarterback J.T. Daniels’ experience and passing ability shine in his first start as a Bulldog.

Georgia wins and covers the spread, 38-10.

Mississippi State’s Mike Leach throws players under bus after Kentucky game, but this loss is on him

Mike Leach put the blame on his players after embarrassing Kentucky loss, but this one might well be on him.

All started beautifully for the Mike Leach era at Mississippi State, with his Air Raid offense surprising defending national champions LSU with a 44-34 win. It was a statement to the SEC that Leach-ball was here, and by the looks of that first game anyway, unstoppable.

It has now proven stoppable. And like so many times before, Leach is lashing out after the result, this time putting the blame on the players, and saying that some may be “malcontents” that will require a “purge.”

Kentucky beat Mississippi State 24-2 on Saturday. That score is not a misprint. Leach’s high-flying offense scored zero points, with the defense doing the work with a lone safety.

And after the game, Leach put the onus not on himself, but rather on the players.

“We’re going to have to check some of our group and figure out who really wants to play here,” Leach said, via ESPN, “because any malcontents, we’re going to have to purge a couple of those.”

Mississippi State’s players did not play great on Saturday. Quarterback K.J. Costello, who broke passing records in the opening game against LSU, threw four interceptions in the game. He threw 55 passes on the day, completing 36 … for 232 yards.

Looking at those stats — 36 complete passes for only 232 total yards, shows just a bit over 6 yards gained per completion. If anything, this speaks to a failure of Leach’s, not his players.

Why? After the first game against LSU (which after another loss to Missouri, might just not be any good at all), there were college football coaches that noted that Leach was running the exact same plays and scheme he ran last year at Washington State.

The defensive solution, which I read about before the game even started, was to not let Costello throw the deep ball, and instead make him do dink-and-dunk short pass stuff until he tried to take a shot downfield.

That’s exactly what happened on Saturday. Kentucky kept the receivers in front of their secondary, let them take short passes, and then punished Costello when he tried to throw downfield.

Leach can say the players are malcontents or not doing the right thing, or whatever, and I’m sure the players made some mistakes, but he’s the one trotting out the same plays and expecting SEC defenses not to adapt to them.

It took them a couple weeks. They figured it out. That’s not on malcontents. That’s on Leach.

Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Gardner Minshew II is one of the league’s most interesting stories, not just because of his unique style, but also his journey into the NFL. To discuss that, Minshew recently got to sit down with The Players’ Tribune to talk about his experiences through the collegiate ranks and just how they shaped him into becoming the Jags QB1.

As many can recall, Minshew went from Troy, to Northwest Mississippi Community College, to East Carolina, to Alabama, and finally Washington State. There he played under offensive guru Mike Leach and was able to put up historic figures, which led to him being a sixth-round selection for the Jags.

His story is one that has made it hard for anyone to root against him and many fans are hoping to see him succeed in 2020. After propelling the Jags to a 6-6 record while he was a starter, Minshew put together a season where he was solid enough to convince the Jags front office to trade veteran Nick Foles.

While the team hasn’t gotten off to the start many were hoping for, Minshew has had some good moments to start the 2020 season. With some consistent success, he could end up solidifying himself as the team’s franchise quarterback — and when looking at his journey into the league, his supporters aren’t necessarily wrong for believing he’ll do just that.

It’s almost as if the Pac-12 plays its game after dark, or something

First question I’ve been asked on every appearance over the last 48 hours: “Can you believe what Mississippi State did to LSU?”

Uhhh, yeah.

America, have you really not seen the Mike Leach offense before?

Of course the 623 yards and five touchdowns put up by KJ Costello in Mississippi State’s stunning 44-34 win at LSU were amazing, but this is what Leach’s teams do.

They put up ungodly numbers.

They take a slew of unnecessary chances when they’re up big in the second half, making games far more interesting than they need to be.

They sort of play defense – but not really – on the way to a 4th-to-6th place conference finish and, God willing, a mid-tier bowl game.

And they play a wacky-fun brand of college football.

But this all seems foreign to a whole lot of SEC fans, as if what happened on Saturday against LSU came from out of nowhere.

Of course it was incredible. Of course Mississippi State fans should be jacked. Of course the win is a big freaking deal. However, LSU really was missing an entire NFL team full of players from last year, including CB Derek Stingley Jr. – possibly the best college football player in America not named Trevor – who only makes all the difference in the world if he wasn’t out sick with non-COVID related issues.

But none of that really matters, especially this year.

How great was that Mississippi State performance? It’s been one of the rock-steady absolutes so far in 2020 is that almost all teams are really, really off to start the season. Without a regular spring practice and with the summer sessions screwed up, almost no one has the timing down.

The timing seemed just super for a Leach offense that’s all about quick reads and precision.

But again, college football, have you not seen this thing before? LSU fans should know the numbers better than anyone else.

Who led the nation in passing last year? Nope – it wasn’t Joe Burrow. It was Washington State’s Anthony Gordon, and he led by a mile averaging a ridiculous 51 more yards per game than Burrow.

Wazzu led the nation in passing in 2019. It led the nation in passing in 2018. Wazzu’s passing game was a disaster in 2017 – it finished second. It totally bottomed out in 2016 – it finished third.

It led the nation in passing in 2015, and 2014, and was fourth in 2013 …

This is what Mike Leach teams do.

The 623 passing yards were crazy – it’s not like this was Oregon State the Bulldogs were facing – but throwing it around the yard 60 times and putting up video game numbers is a day at the office.

And now this experiment gets interesting. As a head coach, Leach has never had the players to work with like he has at Mississippi State.

That doesn’t excuse that he has never taken a team to a conference championship game, much less win one – if you can get to a Power Five championship at Northwestern, or Baylor, or Wake Forest, or Duke … – but now he has the lines, and he has the talent to fit the system.

As if you needed more reasons to watch SEC football …

Oh yes, this will be fun.

Seriously, just how good is Stanford QB Davis Mills?

America, have you really not seen KJ Costello play? My guess is yes.

A little inside baseball stuff here – Stanford being awesome equals pageview and site traffic death.

Over the last two-plus decades, CFN has always covered the Pac-10/Pac-12 with the same sort of analysis and effort of any of the other top conferences, but unless USC is USC, you can actually hear people ignoring the site whenever anything about the league is posted.

Triple that whenever anything is put up about Stanford, even when Andrew Luck was busy being the greatest pro prospect quarterback since John Elway, so it’s not a shocker that Costello needed this LSU game to become a college football name in the SEC world.

Costello was a massive recruit for Stanford in 2016. Jacob Eason was the biggest star quarterback prospect in the class, but Costello wasn’t far behind.

There’s no questioning his size, his arm, his composure, his personality, or his smarts – the guy graduated from Stanford – but he got banged up early last year and wasn’t quite able to come back to form when he was able to go.

Now he’s healthy, and now he’s about to be 2020’s college football big thing.

In 2018 he bombed away for 3,540 yards and 29 touchdowns, torched Leach’s Washington State team for 323 yards and four touchdowns in a wild 41-38 loss, and appeared to be ready to be on the verge of stardom before getting hurt.

Now, he’s the exact right quarterback in the exact right system at the exact right time. No, he’s not Trevor Lawrence, but he might just be the No. 2 quarterback off the board in the 2021 NFL Draft if he can stay healthy and keep this going.

Welcome to college football’s newest superstar, and if he can do that again against Alabama and in wins on a few more national stages, welcome to the lead dog in the 2020 Heisman Trophy race.

Welcome to the KJ Costello, Mississippi State show.
