Panthers could be getting some much-needed help back in Week 18

Panthers RB Miles Sanders could make his return in this weekend’s regular-season finale.

This may be a strange statement to make here in 2024, but the Carolina Panthers really could’ve used Miles Sanders this past Sunday.

After starting running back Chuba Hubbard was placed on injured reserve a day earlier because of a calf strain, the Panthers were forced to roll with Raheem Blackshear and Mike Boone out of their backfield in Week 17. What they got in return was the least productive rushing performance of their season, as Carolina amassed all of 39 yards on the ground in their 48-14 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

That measly output may have reminded a few folks that the Panthers will have Sanders, who has been out for the last seven games due to a foot injury.

So, will he be able to make his return for this weekend’s finale against the Atlanta Falcons?

Head coach Dave Canales was asked about Sanders’ status on Monday.

“Miles has been cleared,” Canales replied. “Last week, he was cleared to be able to play. So, really looking forward to getting him back on the field for practice this week.”

Canales then clarified that although Sanders was given clearance last week, that the green light came a tad too late to get him ready for Week 17.

“Yeah, he was cleared later in the week, so it really wasn’t enough time to get him back into the flow of things for this week,” he later added. “But really looking forward to opening that window and getting him back out there.”

Sanders has rushed for 139 yards and a touchdown on 38 attempts this season.

Panthers sign QB, RB to active roster on Saturday

The Panthers signed a rookie QB and a veteran RB to the active roster ahead of tomorrow’s clash with the Bucs.

The Carolina Panthers made a pair of additions to their active roster ahead of tomorrow’s NFC South showdown against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

As announced on Saturday afternoon, the team has signed quarterback Jack Plummer and running back Mike Boone up from their practice squad.

Boone’s signing comes after the Panthers placed starting running back Chuba Hubbard on injured reserve earlier this morning. Hubbard, who rushed for career-highs in yards (1,195) and touchdown (10), will now miss the final two games of the season due to a calf strain.

With Hubbard shelved, Boone is expected to help shoulder the load out of the backfield alongside Raheem Blackshear. The seventh-year veteran has rushed for 22 yards on seven carries over four games in 2024.

Plummer, an undrafted rookie out of the University of Louisville, has spent the entire regular season on the team’s practice squad. The 25-year-old appeared in all three of the Panthers’ preseason contests, passing for 406 yards and two touchdowns.

Carolina also elevated veteran defensive lineman DeShawn Williams from the practice squad.

Panthers elevate 2 players for Week 16 matchup vs. Cardinals

The Panthers have added some depth at the running back position and on the offensive line ahead of tomorrow’s game against the Cardinals.

The Carolina Panthers have added some depth in the backfield and in the trenches ahead of tomorrow’s matchup with the Arizona Cardinals.

As announced by the team on Saturday afternoon, running back Mike Boone and offensive lineman Brandon Walton have been elevated from the practice squad for Week 16. Both are standard elevations.

This marks Boone’s second consecutive call-up, as the Panthers look to fill the void left behind by the season-ending ACL tear to rookie and second-round pick Jonathon Brooks. The seventh-year veteran, who rushed for 14 yards on a pair of carries in Week 15, recorded three offensive snaps and five special-teams snaps in last week’s 30-14 loss to the Dallas Cowboys.

Walton appeared in the Panthers’ Week 6 outing against the Atlanta Falcons. He played four snaps on special teams in the 38-20 defeat.

Panthers announce 2 elevations for Week 15 matchup vs. Cowboys

As expected, RB Mike Boone will join the Panthers’ Week 15 roster.

Carolina Panthers running back Chuba Hubbard will have a new backfield partner in Week 15.

As announced on Saturday afternoon, the team has elevated seventh-year rusher Mike Boone from the practice squad for tomorrow’s contest against the Dallas Cowboys.

The 29-year-old split his previous six NFL seasons between the Minnesota Vikings (2018 to 2020), Denver Broncos (2021 to 2022) and Houston Texans (2023). He rushed for 539 yards and four touchdowns in 66 games over that span.

Boone, who ran for 76 yards and a score on 18 carries in the preseason, joined Carolina’s practice squad at the end of August. He’s gone on to appear in two regular-season games since, totaling seven rushing yards on four attempts.

He’ll provide some depth at the running back position following the season-ending injury to rookie Jonathon Brooks. The second-round pick re-tore the ACL in his right knee in last week’s loss to the Philadelphia Eagles and was placed on injured reserve this past Tuesday.

Carolina also elevated outside linebacker Jacoby Windmon and downgraded running back/return specialist Raheem Blackshear to out with a chest injury.

Panthers HC Dave Canales provides injury update on RB Miles Sanders

Panthers HC Dave Canales was asked about RB Miles Sanders, who has missed the last three games with an ankle sprain.

We may have seen the last of Carolina Panthers running back Miles Sanders this season.

With rookie rusher Jonathon Brooks now out for the remainder of the campaign after re-tearing the ACL in his right knee, the offense has been forced to look for a No. 2 behind workhorse Chuba Hubbard. For now, it’ll likely be seventh-year veteran Mike Boone—who is expected to be called up from the practice squad for Sunday’s contest against the Dallas Cowboys.

But what about this year’s original No. 2?

Head coach Dave Canales was asked about Sanders’ status on Friday . . .

Sanders went down with the ankle injury in Carolina’s Week 10 win over the New York Giants in Munich, Germany. He is currently on the injured reserve list.

Prior to the sprain, Sanders rushed for 139 yards and a touchdown on 38 attempts. His 2024 average of 3.7 yards per carry currently stands as the second-lowest of his career.

Panthers defense features 4 ex-Broncos players

Panthers DC Ejiro Evero has four ex-Broncos players on his defense, headlined by linebacker Josey Jewell.

The Carolina Panthers’ defense will look familiar when the Denver Broncos host the NFC South opponent in Week 8.

Panthers defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero held that same role with the Broncos in 2022, and he has recruited four ex-Denver defenders to Carolina.

The list of players is headlined by inside linebacker Josey Jewell, who started 58 games for the Broncos from 2018-2023. Carolina also has outside linebacker Thomas Incoom, who spent last season in Denver.

The Panthers also have two former Broncos defensive linemen in DeShawn Williams (2018; 2019; 2020-2022) and Jonathan Harris (2019-2023), who just landed in Charlotte earlier this week.

Additionally, Carolina also has ex-Denver running back Mike Boone on the practice squad. Sunday will be a bit of a homecoming game for these five players and Evero.

1. ILB Josey Jewell

2. OLB Thomas Incoom

3. DL DeShawn Williams

Panthers sign 3 players to practice squad

The Panthers brought back a trio of familiar faces to their practice squad.

The Carolina Panthers brought back a trio of familiar faces on Thursday.

As announced this morning, the team has signed three players to their practice squad—running back Mike Boone, defensive lineman Jayden Peevy and safety Russ Yeast. All three were taken off the active roster as part of a busy Tuesday afternoon, when the Panthers signed offensive lineman Cade Mays and Thomas Incoom to the group.

Boone was Carolina’s second-leading rusher of the preseason, where he amassed 76 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries. He has appeared in two games during the regular season, with all four of his attempts and each of his seven rushing yards having come in the Week 1 loss to the New Orleans Saints.

Peevy has also seen some action over the past five weeks. The 6-foot-5, 308-pounder has played in four games—amassing six combined tackles, 1.5 sack, a forced fumble and a pass defensed.

To help make room for the returns, the Panthers released tight end Stephen Sullivan from the practice squad.

Panthers announce 6 moves on Tuesday

The Panthers made a handful of moves on Tuesday.

The Carolina Panthers are trying to roll with the punches.

With starting center Austin Corbett now done for the rest of the season due to a biceps tear, the team announced that they have signed offensive lineman Cade Mays to their active roster. Mays, a former Panther, was previously a member of the New York Giants’ practice squad.

Carolina selected Mays in the sixth round of the 2022 NFL draft. The versatile 6-foot-6, 325-pound hog molly, who played every position on the offensive line during his collegiate career at the University of Tennessee, has amassed 362 snaps at left guard and 104 at right guard as a pro.

Mays should provide some depth after the loss of Corbett, who head coach Dave Canales spoke about on Monday.

“Again, just another blow,” Canales told reporters yesterday afternoon. “With a guy that just stands for everything that I believe in—the work ethic, the practice habits, the professionalism, his positive outlook in terms of what can be on the next drive, just continuing to work and control the things that he can control. So my heart is with Austin.”

The Panthers also signed outside linebacker Thomas Incoom to the active roster. Incoom, who was elevated from the practice squad the past two weeks, has tallied 22 total snaps thus far.

In addition, the team has released running back Mike Boone and practice-squad safety Alex Cook and waived defensive tackle Jayden Peevy and safety Russ Yeast.

Panthers Week 5 inactives: Josey Jewell, 5 others out vs. Bears

As expected, the Panthers will be without starting ILB Josey Jewell against the Bears this afternoon.

The Carolina Panthers deemed six players as inactive for this afternoon’s matchup against the Chicago Bears, including starting inside linebacker Josey Jewell.

Jewell, who was already ruled out of the contest on Friday’s injury report, is currently dealing with hamstring and groin issues. Through four games, the 29-year-old veteran has amassed 30 combined (second-most on the team) with three passes defensed and a fumble recovery.

Carolina’s defense is also without fellow starting inside ‘backer Shaq Thompson, who was officially placed on injured reserve yesterday. The longtime Panther will miss the remainder of the 2024 campaign after tearing his Achilles tendon in the Week 4 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals.

Rookie Trevin Wallace and veteran Claudin Cherelus are expected to start in place of Jewell and Thompson.

Head coach Dave Canales talked about the two earlier this week.

“Yeah, Claudin Cherelus is gonna have a great opportunity to play some football for us,” Canales said to reporters on Monday. “A guy that really took strides in camp, and a guy that we’re definitely looking forward to seeing out there to play football. For he and Trevin [Wallace] to start communicating and be able to work with the whole group.”

Here is the full list of inactives for the Panthers in Week 5:

  • RB Mike Boone
  • LB Josey Jewell
  • G Jarrett Kingston
  • DE Jayden Peevy
  • C Andrew Raym
  • S Russ Yeast

And here’s who is down for the Bears:

  • FB Khari Blasingame
  • WR Velus Jones Jr.
  • DL Zacch Pickens
  • DL Dominique Robinson
  • DB Terell Smith
