The Rebels only had 126 passing yards and starting QB Doug Brumfield completed just 61% of his passes (11 of 18) for 86 yards and 1 INT.

The Wolverines are highly favored for their 2nd-straight game after beating the East Carolina Pirates 30-3. QB J.J. Against the spread

LEAN UNLV +37.5 (-110).

While the Wolverines will pick up the blowout win here, I’m not sure they’ll be able to cover as a 37.5-point favorite. UNLV is a very run-heavy team and that will likely lead to some long drives for them. Those long drives will keep the ball out of Michigan’s hands, making it hard for them to score enough points to cover.

Over/Under

BET UNDER 57.5 (-115).

Michigan’s defense allowed nothing vs. the Pirates last week, and I expect that trend to continue vs. a very 1-dimensional UNLV offense. The Rebels showed last week they have no intentions of trying to punish teams through the air, which will make them easy to defend. With both teams preferring to be dominant on the ground, there will likely be a lot of long drives, making it hard for this game to hit the over.

The Wolverines come into the season with ultra-high expectations. Jim Harbaugh has a championship-or-bust season on the docket as both his starting quarterback (J.J. McCarthy) and running back (Blake Corum) will return to the team. He has two transfer starting offensive linemen as well. Michigan is No. 2 in the USA TODAY Sports US LBM Coaches Poll.

The Pirates won’t have the same experience, but they will have a few high-caliber playmakers on their roster, including 6-foot-5 QB Mason Garcia, who has played in 12 games in his 3 years with the program. Starting RB Rahjai Harris gained 1,208 yards in his 1st 2 season with 8 TDs, but played in just 5 games last year. The Pirates’ top weapons have experience in the program which should be helpful against a powerhouse like Michigan.

There’s just no value here for either side. Michigan is a top-3 team in the nation and has the experience and coaching to make it to the College Football Playoffs this season. They should dominate this game, but at (-10000), they just aren’t worth even considering in a parlay.

Against the spread

LEAN EAST CAROLINA +36.5 (-110).

Simply put, when this game gets out of hand and it is in the 2nd half, Michigan may not keep the gas on.

East Carolina isn’t a great team, but it is in the American Conference and should have ample size in the trenches to get some traction offensively. Its main weapon will be its running back which should help kill the clock and keep the game within several scores as well.

East Carolina represents a team more like who the Wolverines played to kick off the 2021 season, beating Western Michigan by 33 and Washington by 21. The Pirates are better than Colorado State and Hawaii, who Michigan beat by 44 and 46 to kick off last season.

Expect a battle within 37 points and lean EAST CAROLINA +36.5 (-110).

Over/Under

BET UNDER 51.5 (-105).

The Michigan defense was among the best in the nation last season. The Wolverines allowed 292.1 yards per game, which ranked 5th in the entire FBS. Their defense should again dominate, and they will likely hold East Carolina to single-digit points.

With a championship in mind this season, risking McCarthy and Corum late in a blowout doesn’t make much sense, so Michigan should take the foot off the gas in the second half. Both teams have strong running games and should waste some clock by keeping the ball on the ground.

Put it all together and take UNDER 51.5 (-105).

The 6-seed Toledo Rockets (27-7) face the 3-seed Michigan Wolverines (17-15) Tuesday in the 1st round of the National Invitational Tournament. Tip from Crisler Arena in Ann Arbor, Mich., is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET (ESPN2). Toledo came up short as the top-seed in the Mid-American Conference Tournament, and failed to secure its first NCAA Tournament bid since 1980.

Still, the Rockets are on a 17-1 SU roll since Jan. 10, while covering 6 of the last 7 games. This is a prolific offense, rolling up 85.7 PPG in the regular season (2nd in the nation). Toledo was also No. 2 in 3-pointer percentage (40.5%), while checking in No. 5 in field-goal percentage (49.6%). Defensively, Toledo was a train wreck, yielding 76.1 PPG, and it was even worse in the MAC tourney with 81.0 PPG allowed in 3 outings.

Michigan limped to the finish line of the regular season with 2 straight OT losses to Indiana and Illinois, and it needed a strong showing in the Big Ten Conference tourney. It didn’t get it, getting bounced 62-50 in the 1st game by Rutgers. That snapped a 5-0 ATS run, while the Under result halted a 3-0 Over streak.

Michigan was a so-so offense in the regular season, going for 73.8 PPG, and it wasn’t great defensively either, allowing 69.6 PPG, which was middle of the pack. One alarming stat is a 70.3% free-throw percentage, which won’t serve Michigan well in potentially close games in the NIT.

TOLEDO (+210) heads up US 23 to Michigan (-280) on a mission, looking to prove that it deserved an NCAA Tournament at-large bid. Some of these mid-major teams who come up short tend to enter the NIT with a chip on their shoulder, and I think Toledo will be no exception.

The Rockets have a red-hot offense, and it will be a huge test for the defense of the Wolverines. Toledo has scored 78 or more points in 9 consecutive games since Feb. 11, and there is no reason to believe it won’t happen here, either.

Against the spread

TOLEDO +6.5 (-115) is still a tremendous play catching more than 3 buckets, if you just can’t bring yourself to bet it straight up.

Michigan -6.5 (-105) is not like Toledo, and likely unhappy to be in an NIT game. Sure, it’s nice to be in front of your fans, but the Wolverines are highly disappointed in not making the NCAA Tournament field. A postseason bid in a lower-level tournament doesn’t have the same pizzazz as it does for a mid-major team happy to receive any postseason invitation. Look for the Rockets to come out with more energy.

Over/Under

OVER 161.5 (-110) is a rather big number, but it’s still not enough.

The Over is 5-1 in the last 6 games overall for Toledo, while going 4-1 in the last 5 games on the road, too. Toledo has posted 90 or more points in 11 occasions, while hitting the century mark 4 times this season.

For Michigan, the Over is 5-2 in the last 7 home games, while cashing at a 5-0 clip in the last 5 at home against teams with a winning road mark.

Michigan has been taking games to the wire of late. A final-second shot by Hunter Dickinson on Sunday was the shot needed to get the Wolverines to overtime against the Badgers and allow them to pull out the win.

This will be another close call in Champagne and neither team should be favored by 4.5 points. With Michigan being the underdog, I will take the value with them to keep it close.

Over/Under

UNDER 143.5 (-105).

Michigan has had a steady pace of Under totals on the road. Four of the Wolverines’ last 5 road games have gone Under and 4 of 5 road games against a team with a winning home record have also gone Under.

Michigan has not performed well on the road with a 3-5 record and Illinois is 14-2 at home.wise. The Wolverines will need to perform better to have a chance Thursday, but Illinois tends to play to its competition. This includes a 6-1-1 record to the Under against a team with a losing road record.

Both sides will be physical, and points will be at a premium so Under 143.5 is the side to wager.

After 2 ugly losses Michigan rebounded Thursday with a 17-point road win over Northwestern. While Michigan was winning, Ohio State was losing its 3rd game in a row to Wisconsin as 7.5-point favorites.

Ohio State has almost given up on the season. While this would be a good win for them against a rival, I do not see the Buckeyes keeping this game close.

Over/Under

UNDER 144.5 (-115).

With both teams coming in playing down to their competition, this game looks to be destined for an Under. Michigan has gone Under in 5 of its last 6 home games against teams with losing road records.

Ohio State does not have the offense to outpace the Wolverines and Michigan will be content with a slow-paced game played in the 60’s. Take the Under in this game as long as it remains above 142.
