Why Michigan Will Win

Even for Ohio State, the injuries at the skill spots are a problem.

CJ Stroud is still being CJ Stroud, but the other stars in the backfield – Miyan Williams and TreVeyon Henderson – are trying to battle through leg problems, WR Jaxon Smith-Njigba hasn’t been right all year, and last week it almost took its toll.

Again, it’s Ohio State so it all turned out fine in a 43-30 win over Maryland, but the 401 yards were alarmingly low at a point in the season when everything is supposed to be humming.

Now the Buckeye offense has to deal with the No. 1 defense in college football.

The Wolverine run defense is allowing fewer than three yards per carry, the pass D hasn’t allowed anyone to get to 270 yards, and it’s got enough of a presence in the backfield and is strong enough on third downs to keep the Buckeyes from clicking.

On the other side, Michigan’s offensive style should be a big, big problem for a team that hasn’t exactly dealt with a slew of killer running games.

With or without Blake Corum carrying the ball, the Michigan O line should be able to blast away as the game goes on – the 168 rushing yards against Illinois was a better performance than it might seem – turnovers aren’t an issue with just six spread out over the first 11 games, and …

Bowl Projections | Bowl Bubble: Who’s Bowl Eligible?

Why Ohio State Will Win

Rutgers, Nebraska, Iowa, Indiana, Colorado State, UConn, and Hawaii.

Michigan has faced seven of the 35 least-productive offenses in college football, and Michigan State isn’t far off. Penn State and its 37th-best offense is the most talented it faced all year, and Maryland is as close as it’s been to dealing with a dangerous passing attack.

It’s Michigan. Like Ohio State it has options if Corum can’t go on his injured leg, but no … it’s not Ohio State. The high-end star power isn’t there among the backups to step in and shine like Dallan Hayden did last week for the Buckeyes against Maryland with 146 rushing yards and three scores.

But the offensive line really is that good. It’s going to pound away, and Ohio State’s run defense will have its rough moments. However, it’s asking a lot for the Michigan passing attack to come through when needed.

JJ McCarthy has been fine, but against a slew of mediocre teams over the last four games – not including Illinois – he hasn’t been able to hit 60% of his passes.

What worked against the Nebraska’s and Michigan State’s of the world won’t fly against the Buckeyes.

This is a pressure-leads-to-breaking Michigan offense. Eventually the pounding takes over and the points and yards come in the second half. That didn’t work against the great Illinois defense last week – it didn’t help that Corum got hurt – and there’s going to be a big, big problem if the Buckeyes get up early.

Week 13 College Football Schedule, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Ohio State is already amazing, but it takes on a whole other level when it has a score to settle.

The 2020 team didn’t sort of focused all year on winning the national title, and it always wants to beat Michigan, but there was another theme. That team wanted Clemson after the pain and suffering in the College Football Playoff the season before, and it came out rocking with a 49-28 win in the semifinal.

This might be a national title-level team, but to know anything about this program is to get that the last year has been all about getting Michigan out of its head.

Michigan is very, very good, though – it isn’t going to get pushed around.

Ohio State will get up fast, the Wolverines will fight back and make it interesting, and then Stroud and company will kick it in and exorcise the demon early in the fourth quarter.

The Michigan Lines Had This

Of course Michigan’s win over Ohio State will be about Jim Harbaugh finally getting that big win over the team he couldn’t beat.

It was about exorcising the demons, getting a shot to play for the Big Ten championship, and it was about the unbridled joy of the Michigan fan base that had to live with this Ohio State thing for SO long.

It was about Michigan being more physical than Ohio State, and that was the big question coming into the game.

The Buckeyes hadn’t dealt with anyone that was all that nasty with the ground game – Michigan State game aside after getting up so big so fast – since the first two games of the season against Minnesota and Oregon.

They got it done because the lines had this.

Michigan got the opening kickoff and pounded for 75 yards in ten plays for a long, grinding touchdown drive thanks to a great start from the offensive front.

The offensive line had this.

The defensive line did the job keeping TreVeyon Henderson in check, Aidan Hutchinson and the front four spent most of the game jumping CJ Stroud’s head – even though the Buckeye quarterback was fantastic under the pressure, throwing for close to 400 yards with two touchdowns and no picks – and it never let the Ohio State offense take over.

The defensive line had this.

Ohio State pulled to within eight late, and just as it seemed like it might be able to take over with one defensive stop, Michigan’s offensive line closed it out.

Five plays, five Hassan Haskins runs, touchdown, streak stopped.

The O line blasted away for a full four quarters for close to 300 rushing yards. The defense came up with four sacks, eight tackles for loss – Hutchinson with three of those sacks – as it did the job just enough on third downs against the nation’s No. 1 offense.

And that’s what’s going to be remembered as the most satisfying part about this for Michigan fans. It was the win that was a long time coming, and it was done by being tougher, nastier, and more physical.

Ohio State has more talent, it has the NFL receivers, and again, Stroud was and is magnificent. But this was Michigan imposing its will to get this done.

The Michigan lines had this, and now the team is one win away from having to make a trip into the College Football Playoff.

Why Michigan Will Win

The brouhaha that took over the narrative overshadowed a brilliant performance by Michigan in the 79-66 win over Maryland. It took a little while to get going, but the offense kicked it all in, everything was dropping, and now the Big Ten regular season champion has to go through the arch-rival.

Ohio State was able to hold off a hard-charging Purdue in an 87-78 overtime win, but it blew an 18-point lead on the way to the victory.

In the first game between the Wolverines and Buckeyes, Ohio State hit everything. It made half of its shots from three, was great on the inside, and moved the ball around extremely well while avoiding a slew of turnovers and mistakes … and lost.

Michigan might not be perfect lately, and it would be nice to come up with a full 40 minutes of dominance against a team of Ohio State’s level, but the defense continues to be terrific and the shooting and versatility are still there to score in a variety of ways.

Why Ohio State Will Win

Can the Buckeyes pull an Illinois?

The Fighting Illini were able to roll past the Wolverines in a 76-53 win by being more aggressive on the boards, tougher on the inside, and dominant at getting out on the outside shooters. More than anything else, they were able to keep Michigan from making that extra pass or two for the right shot – the Wolverines had a season-low four assists.

Ohio State can’t keep up in a shootout. This has to be about the Buckeye defense and that means it has to find another gear and keep the Wolverines from getting to O into a flow – they had 19 assists in the first meeting.

However …

What’s Going To Happen

Ohio State just doesn’t force mistakes.

It’s one of the worst teams in the nation at forcing turnovers, it doesn’t come up with steals, and there are way, way too many fouls – the 22 against Purdue were a problem.

It’s Ohio State-Michigan in the Big Ten Tournament – obviously, crank up the intensity to a whole other level – but Michigan will do a better job of forcing mistakes and going on that one big run to control the game.

It would be a blast to get a repeat of that first meeting, but …

Why Michigan Will Win

It took a half and then Michigan was all back full.

It struggled after a long layoff with a bad first half against Wisconsin, and then the machine turned back on in a dominant run for a fantastic win. The offense wasn’t quite there yet, but it was good enough in a 71-64 win over Rutgers.

Call those the warm-ups for this.

The Wolverines haven’t missed a beat from three, they’re still moving the ball around well, and the defense from three has improved over the second half of the season – no one has hit 40% from three in any of the last eight games and only two teams hit the 30% mark.

Ohio State doesn’t have to hit from three to win, but it’s certainly a massive part of its game, hitting ten or more from the outside in three of the last four games. Michigan has the talent to slow that down.

Why Ohio State Will Win

The Buckeyes are rolling like Michigan was before its several week break.

The defense has been hit-or-miss, but the offense has been unstoppable. It’s getting to the basket more, it’s been sharper from three, and it’s more consistent from the field over the second half of the season.

The Buckeyes made half of their shots once in the first 11 games, and have done it six times over the last 11 and have only been below 45% once.

Michigan’s defense might be terrific, but it doesn’t force mistakes and won’t do enough against the Buckeye backcourt to trigger easy points.

What’s Going To Happen

Give the Wolverines a little more time before they’re fully back to normal.

Ohio State’s defense will have problems standing up to a few big Michigan haymakers, but it’ll be steadier throughout the full 40 minutes, won’t buckle under the late pressure, and they’re going to make the free throws That Team Up North won’t.

If want in on this week’s games, sign up with BetMGM

Why Michigan Will Win

The defense that stunningly didn’t show up in the loss to Wisconsin earlier in the week should be able to step it back up.

The Wolverines shoot better than anyone in the Big Ten, but that’s partly because of a defense that stepped it up in a big way over the second half of the season.

Ohio State isn’t going to force a slew of big mistakes – there won’t be a slew of steals – and Michigan is too good at moving the ball around and too good at finding the right shot – but it’s the other side that hasty get it done.

Michigan has won its last six games when teams hit under 30% of their shots from three, but …

“Go to the bank!” Today’s top pick of the day just released

Why Ohio State Will Win

The Buckeyes lead the Big Ten from the outside, connecting on 37% from three. They won a 61-58 dogfight of a game the first time around by outshooting the Wolverines, doing a far better job from the field and connecting on 39% of their tries from three.

There are holes in the Ohio State game, but it’s great at clamping down when it has to, especially on the outside. The first time around, neither team got to the line enough, but expect that to change.

Ohio State is far better at getting to the line than Michigan is, and …

What’s Going To Happen

That will be the difference.

Neither team got more than ten free throw attempts the first time around, but expect the Buckeyes to be at least +5 on the line. It’ll be another tough, good-defensive game.

Ohio State vs. Michigan

When: Saturday, November 30

Time: 12:00 p.m. ET

TV: FOX

Live Stream: fuboTV (watch for free)

Since a 28-21 loss to Penn State on the road Oct. 19, Michigan’s offense has turned it up. The team is averaging 41.5 points and 422.8 total yards of offense over the past four games. This is the best quarterback Shea Patterson has played during his tenure at Michigan. Over the past two games, he is 41-for-58 for 750 yards, nine touchdowns, and one interception. In a 39-14 win over Indiana, his late interception was his first turnover in 17 quarters.

The Wolverines offense may be playing its best this season, but it hasn’t dealt with a juggernaut that is the Buckeyes defense. It ranks No. 1 in the nation in efficiency and scoring, allowing just 10.5 points per game. Michigan needs to be ready for defensive end Chase Young, who leads the NCAA with 16.5 sacks. He’s leading that category despite missing two games due to an NCAA violation.

Ohio State had a sloppy 28-17 win against Penn State last weekend, which was easily its least impressive victory of the season. However, Ohio State still locked up the Big Ten East and will play in the Big Ten Championship game. The Buckeyes were up 21-0 at the beginning of the third quarter, but three straight turnovers allowed the score to quickly flip to 21-17. While the focus has been on the play of quarterback Justin Fields the entire season, he had three turnovers in the game. Fields finished the game with 188 yards passing and two touchdowns. The most success the Buckeyes found last weekend was in the run game. J.K. Dobbins ran for 157 yards, while Fields ran for 68 yards. Dobbins has 1,446 rushing yards and 15 touchdowns. His backup, Master Teague, has more rushing yards (751) than anyone on Michigan’s roster. Receivers Chris Olave, K.J. Hill, and Binjimen Victor have a combined 23 receiving touchdowns.

The Wolverines defense may not be as highly touted as the Buckeyes, but it still cannot be overlooked. Michigan’s defense has been playing well ever since an early season loss at Wisconsin. It’s currently the nation’s No. 5 defense, but the defensive tackles will have to limit the run and allow the linebackers to make plays.
