Why Michigan Will Win

The brouhaha that took over the narrative overshadowed a brilliant performance by Michigan in the 79-66 win over Maryland. It took a little while to get going, but the offense kicked it all in, everything was dropping, and now the Big Ten regular season champion has to go through the arch-rival.

Ohio State was able to hold off a hard-charging Purdue in an 87-78 overtime win, but it blew an 18-point lead on the way to the victory.

In the first game between the Wolverines and Buckeyes, Ohio State hit everything. It made half of its shots from three, was great on the inside, and moved the ball around extremely well while avoiding a slew of turnovers and mistakes … and lost.

Michigan might not be perfect lately, and it would be nice to come up with a full 40 minutes of dominance against a team of Ohio State’s level, but the defense continues to be terrific and the shooting and versatility are still there to score in a variety of ways.

Why Ohio State Will Win

Can the Buckeyes pull an Illinois?

The Fighting Illini were able to roll past the Wolverines in a 76-53 win by being more aggressive on the boards, tougher on the inside, and dominant at getting out on the outside shooters. More than anything else, they were able to keep Michigan from making that extra pass or two for the right shot – the Wolverines had a season-low four assists.

Ohio State can’t keep up in a shootout. This has to be about the Buckeye defense and that means it has to find another gear and keep the Wolverines from getting to O into a flow – they had 19 assists in the first meeting.

However …

What’s Going To Happen

Ohio State just doesn’t force mistakes.

It’s one of the worst teams in the nation at forcing turnovers, it doesn’t come up with steals, and there are way, way too many fouls – the 22 against Purdue were a problem.

It’s Ohio State-Michigan in the Big Ten Tournament – obviously, crank up the intensity to a whole other level – but Michigan will do a better job of forcing mistakes and going on that one big run to control the game.

It would be a blast to get a repeat of that first meeting, but …

Why Michigan Will Win

It took a half and then Michigan was all back full.

It struggled after a long layoff with a bad first half against Wisconsin, and then the machine turned back on in a dominant run for a fantastic win. The offense wasn’t quite there yet, but it was good enough in a 71-64 win over Rutgers.

Call those the warm-ups for this.

The Wolverines haven’t missed a beat from three, they’re still moving the ball around well, and the defense from three has improved over the second half of the season – no one has hit 40% from three in any of the last eight games and only two teams hit the 30% mark.

Ohio State doesn’t have to hit from three to win, but it’s certainly a massive part of its game, hitting ten or more from the outside in three of the last four games. Michigan has the talent to slow that down.

Why Ohio State Will Win

The Buckeyes are rolling like Michigan was before its several week break.

The defense has been hit-or-miss, but the offense has been unstoppable. It’s getting to the basket more, it’s been sharper from three, and it’s more consistent from the field over the second half of the season.

The Buckeyes made half of their shots once in the first 11 games, and have done it six times over the last 11 and have only been below 45% once.

Michigan’s defense might be terrific, but it doesn’t force mistakes and won’t do enough against the Buckeye backcourt to trigger easy points.

What’s Going To Happen

Give the Wolverines a little more time before they’re fully back to normal.

Ohio State’s defense will have problems standing up to a few big Michigan haymakers, but it’ll be steadier throughout the full 40 minutes, won’t buckle under the late pressure, and they’re going to make the free throws That Team Up North won’t.

The Ohio State Buckeyes (19-9, 9-8 in the Big Ten) host Big Ten conference rival Michigan Wolverines (18-10, 9-8 in the Big Ten) at the Value City Arena for a 4 p.m. ET tip-off. We analyze the Michigan-Ohio State odds and betting lines, with college basketball betting advice and tips around this matchup.

Michigan at Ohio State: Three things you need to know

  1. Michigan had a five-game win streak snapped after losing to the Wisconsin Badgers, 81-74, on February 27. Senior guard Zavier Simpson went off for 32 points in the loss but it wasn’t enough as Wisconsin shot 53% from the field and 48% from behind the arc.
  2. Ohio State has won back-to-back games and four out of its last five. The Buckeyes’ 73-54 win over the Nebraska Cornhuskers on February 27 was keyed by their defense, which held Nebraska to 36% field goal and 19% 3-point shooting.
  3. Michigan and Ohio State are currently tied for seventh place in the Big Ten standings. The Buckeyes went into Ann Arbor and pulled off a 61-58 upset in the first game of the season on February 4. The final score disguises the Buckeyes’ defensive efforts as they held the Wolverines to just 33% field goal shooting.

Prediction

Ohio State 71, Michigan 60

Moneyline (ML)

Monitor the injury report because the game status of Michigan’s (+145) highest-scoring player, SF Isaiah Livers, is crucial. His absence in the first game was one of the main reasons the Wolverines offense laid bricks. Since his status is up in the air, and Ohio State -175 is too steep of a price, we are PASSING on the MONEYLINE.

Against the Spread (ATS)

Ohio State -3.5 (-110)  usually handles business at home, going 10-4 ATS as a home favorite with a 17.3 average margin of victory. While Michigan +3.5 (-110) struggles as a road dog and has a 2-9 ATS record, with a -5.8 margin of victory, in the spot. Additionally, the Buckeyes are 7-2 ATS at home versus winning teams and the Wolverines are just 2-5 ATS on the road against teams above .500. Take Ohio State 3.5 (-110).

Over/Under (O/U)

Under 137 (-110) is the play because the Under has cashed four out of the last five Michigan-Ohio State games. Also, Ohio State plays exceptional defense (ranked 19th in the country in opponent’s points per game and 18th in opponent’s field goal percentage), but their offense is average (147th in PPG and 130th in field goal %).

Ohio State Football names its Players of the Week against Michigan

The Ohio State Buckeyes put a 29-point beatdown on their northern rivals, and it was behind the dominant performances of their four players.

The Ohio State Buckeyes put a 29-point beatdown on their northern rivals this past Saturday. From start to finish, it was all Ohio State after Michigan got out to a lead early.

Michigan took their first drive to the house and put up sixteen first-half points on the nation’s best defense. While that wasn’t expected, Ohio State did respond in a big way, scoring the very next drive.

The Buckeyes took a 28-16 lead into half time. After a 14-3 third quarter, the 42-19 ballgame was all but over as the sea of red started to crowd one of the endzone sections.

That said, Ohio State has released its offensive and defensive players of the week.

Offensively, it was J.K. Dobbins and Justin Fields.

There are no questions asked here.

Dobbins ran for 200-plus yards, averaging 6.8 yards per game. He found the endzone four times. Fields then threw for four more touchdowns and 302 yards, his second 300-yard performance of the season.

Defensively for the Buckeyes, they appointed Davon Hamilton and Jeff Okudah.

Okudah, the nation’s best corner and projected top-five pick, was all over the field against the Wolverines. Surprisingly, they opted to actually throw his way, ending the game with two pass deflections.

For Hamilton, he finished the game with four solo tackles, two tackles for loss and one big-time sack. Chase Young was neutralized against a sturdy Michigan front.

Moving forward, although they didn’t need the victory to clinch the Big Ten East, the Buckeyes will be taking on Wisconsin in the Big Ten Championship Game this coming Saturday at 8 pm EST.
