Game Recap: MSU Basketball handily beats Charleston Southern 94-46

Michigan State Basketball took care of business against Charleston Southern 94-46. Here is a quick recap of this game.

Michigan State Basketball handled their business against Charleston Southern with a 94-46 victory. This game was never close as the Spartans got out to a big lead early on. MSU made sure to pour it on all throughout the game.

Here is your game recap:

Per usual, Cassius Winston got the Spartan’s offense flowing tonight. He displayed impressive dribbling moves and consistently scored at the basket with ease. All the while, he fed teammates all over the court. Everyone on the Michigan State roster ate tonight thanks to Winston. In particular, Cassius found Xavier Tillman on a few different plays for easy buckets at the rim.

MSU doubled Charleston Southern’s points early on in the first half. Charleston Southern played hard, no doubt about that. They were just unable to score. As a result, Michigan State poured it on leading into the second half.

This is where the Spartans really got loose. MSU turned this game into a dunk fest. Gabe Brown and Marcus Bingham attacked the rim without any resistance all night long while Malik Hall continued his own impressive play. Best of all, Winston was not the only player dropping dimes in this game.

Rocket Watts found Gabe Brown in transition for a sweet alley-oop, converting on a high-effort defensive play. In particular, Watts looked more aggressive than ever before. He only converted four field goals but took an 14 shots which is what matters. Watts needs to develop his confidence and the jump shot will follow.

Now, there is one highlight that deserves special recognition. With eight minutes left in the second half, Gabe Brown threw down an absolutely vicious dunk. He went baseline and punished the rim like it stole his money. No joke, I expect to see this dunk on Sportscenter later tonight and tomorrow morning. Gabe Brown got up!

Michigan State ended this game with 31 assists on 36 field goals. Notable stat lines from this game belong to Xavier Tillman, Cassius Winston, and Rocket Watts.

Xavier Tillman ended the game with 21 points, 10 rebounds, four assists, and one block. Cassius ended the game with 11 points, five rebounds, and eight assists. Finally, Rocket Watts put up 11 points along with seven rebounds and six assists.

After the game, Cassius Winston addressed the crowd after the passing of his brother, Zachary. Note, these are the first public comments since the death of his brother.

MSU vs. Charleston Southern basketball: Three Things To Watch

Michigan State welcomes Charleston Southern to the Breslin Center tomorrow. Here are three things to watch in this game.

Michigan State welcomes Charleston Southern basketball to the Breslin Center tomorrow for a 6:30 P.M. game. Charleston Southern is 1-3 fresh off of a loss to Dayton, 90-61. Michigan State, on the other hand, is 2-1 comes off a close 76-73 victory over Seton Hall.

Here are three things to watch in this game:

Dontrell Shuler

Dontrell Shuler is without a doubt the best player on the Charleston Southern basketball roster. The 6″2 sophomore guard has seemingly made a leap after last year. In the 2018 season, Shuler only averaged 10.9 points. So far, he’s averaging 20 points on the year.

If you remember, Seton Hall guard Myles Powell gave Michigan State fits. Granted, Powell is a senior and looked like one of the best players in all of college basketball. It is possible for Shuler to also be a problem. He is another small guard and can lure Winston into foul trouble early.

Watch the matchup Tom Izzo puts out against Shuler. I predict Rocket Watts will get a ton of minutes guarding Dontrell Shuler. This could be a good test for Watts on the defensive end.

Newcomer Success

All year, fans have wondered who would be the impressive newcomer. Malik Hall filled this role against Seton Hall and went absolutely bananas. Hall played 19 minutes and made the most of each. He ended the game with 17 points and went 7-7 from the field including three shots from beyond the arc.

It is highly likely Malik Hall gets even more minutes against Charleston Southern. It is highly unlikely he is 100% perfect from the field again, but,he can still contribute well. Especially if his three-point shooting persists. MSU needs a big man that can space the floor.

Guard Depth

Rocket Watts is slowly developing his confidence whereas Foster Loyer looks a bit timid. Outside of Winston, MSU seems to lack Guard depth. Kyle Ahrens just does not look right out on the floor. The Spartans need a Guard to step up in this game, who will it be?

Fans have been hard on Foster Loyer given that he was so good in high school. I think he can still grow this year. Against Seton Hall, Loyer looked a bit more confident. He hit a nice three early in the game and later converted on a layup with the defense draped all over him.

I’m still high on Rocket Watts as well. He ended the Seton Hall victory with eight points, shooting 3-8 from the field. He also grabbed five boards and two steals. Right now, Watts should keep shooting and focus on defensive production. Worst case scenario, he misses shots but comes up with multiple steals in each game.

You can catch this game on Big Ten Network at 6:30 P.M. tomorrow. Cheer on the Spartan Dawgs during this game.

MSU Football’s blowout loss to Michigan: Three Key Takeaways

Michigan State football suffered an incredibly tragic defeat at the hands of Michigan, 44-10. Here are three key takeaways from this game

Michigan State Football suffered an a horrific loss at the hands of interstate rival Michigan, 44-10. The Spartans kept it relatively close at first, but, the Wolverines took over in the third quarter. This lead to a landslide victory for the University of Michigan.

Here are three key takeaways from this game:

Paradigm Shift

Remember the start of this season? When Mark Dantonio surpassed Hugh Daugherty as the most winningest coach in Spartan history. Those days now seem long gone. Nearly every Michigan State fan has turned on Dantonio.

There are certain fans that want Dantonio to retire, others want Dantonio to be fired. Does it have to be this way? I understand the frustration. He had a chance to clean house in the offseason and start fresh but did not do so. Does his success not warrant any good faith from fans?

It is possible to chalk up this season to the coordinator staff, injuries, and lack of talent. The Ohio State loss clearly displayed the disparity in talent between the Buckeyes and the Spartans. The offensive line is absolutely depleted and Joe Bachie is suspended. WR Darrell Stewart went down with an injury just as WR CJ Hayes came back.

I know it is easy to succumb to frustration, but, coaching decisions must be backed by logic and rational thoughts. Do not think about just the present, instead consider the future. Who will replace Dantonio? Are they a better coach? If not, then you set yourself up for failure by firing him.

The Rivalry Is Strong

Michigan and Michigan State offer up one of the most heated rivalries in all of sports. The players do not like each other, the fans do not like each other. This was on full display yesterday. The game started out chippy and it only grew from there.

Later in the game, Jacub Panasiuk hit Shea Patterson late and was flagged for roughing the passer. The referees ejected Panasiuk from the game for this hit. No doubt this was the culmination of frustration for Michigan State.

[jwplayer ptG62HdJ]

In between the chippy play, there were celebrations galore. Cody White was flagged for taunting after a nice catch over a Michigan defender. On the other hand, Michigan WR Tarik Black was flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct after flexing on Josh Butler. This rivalry has not taken a step back whatsoever.

Curtain Call For Brian Lewerke

I’ve spent almost all year defending Brian Lewerke. Last week, I gave this up. I cannot do this anymore. Lewerke is not a terrible QB, but, he is certainly not a winning QB. He had an absolutely horrendous outing against the Wolverines.

Michigan QB Shea Patterson won the QB duel yesterday against Lewerke. Patterson dropped 384 yards, completing 24 of his 33 pass attempts. This lead to Patterson throwing four touchdown passes, three more than Lewerke. Brian only put up 166 yards, completing 17 of his 30 attempts.

It is not easy to bench a senior QB and maybe that won’t even happen. Personally, I think it’s time for Rocky Lombardi and Theo Day to get some snaps. Especially late in a blowout game. These reps can help shape the offseason perspective and QB scenario moving forward. It’s time to think about the future.

Michigan State football travels to SHI Stadium to play against Rutgers University on Nov. 23. The game starts at 12:00 P.M.

Quick thoughts and takes on every Week 12 Big Ten game.

@PeteFiutak

Wisconsin 37, Nebraska 21

Adrian Martinez was fantastic. He was fast, decisive, and he looked like the star for the Husker offense everyone is hoping he’ll be. He threw for 220 yards and a score, ran for 89 yards and a touchdown, Dedrick Mills ran for 188 yards and a score, and Nebraska gained almost 500 yards …

And Nebraska lost by 16.

Wisconsin got shoved around too much, struggled against the Nebraska running game, and gave up too many big plays, but Jonathan Taylor ran for 204 yards and two scores, QB Jack Coan was fine, Aron Cruickshank retuned a kick for a score, and the D came through when absolutely needed.

The Badgers need to win out and get a loss from Minnesota before they play on November 30th. Nebraska has to beat both Maryland on the road and against Iowa to go bowling.

Northwestern 45, UMass 6

Leave it to Northwestern to be the only team that couldn’t hang a gajillion points on the worst defense in college football. One of the scores came on a blocked field goal.

This was the game to have a whole lot of fun with the passing game. Aidan Smith completed 7-of-13 passes for 76 yards with two interceptions. Wheeeeee!

Evan Hull?! The freshman had four carries all year for 15 yards, and he ripped through the Minutemen for 220 yards and four scores on 24 carries. The Wildcats ran for 335 yards and five scores.

It’s going to take something amazing for the Wildcats to win another game with Minnesota and at Illinois to close. 2-10 would be the worst season since going 2-9 in 1993.

MSU Football crushed by Michigan 44-10: Twitter Reactions

MSU football was absolutely pummeled by the Michigan Wolverines, 44-10. Here are a handful of Twitter reactions to this game.

Well, here we are. The worst possible outcome of the MSU vs. Michigan game is now a reality. Michigan absolutely pummeled Michigan State, 44-10. The game was close for less than one quarter before the Spartans lost control. Shea Patterson and the Michigan offense carved up Michigan State’s defense.

Big Housed: Hapless Michigan State pummeled by Michigan

Michigan State loses to Michigan.

Paul Bunyan is staying in Ann Arbor.

Wins over Michigan built Mark Dantonio’s Michigan State football program. Perhaps it’s right that a thudding loss to Michigan will be the punctuation on Danonio’s final chapter.

After playing for their season for about seven minutes, Michigan State reverted to their previous form, the one that led to them entering today’s game with a 4-5 record. Michigan countered an early Max Rosenthal touchdown catch and the Wolverines were off and running.

A 98-yard touchdown drive followed.

Then a field goal drive.

Then another touchdown drive.

The refs could have ended the game right there. Unfortunately for the Spartans they didn’t.

Michigan State managed a field goal to draw closer at 24-10.  They needed six. On the ensuing drive the Spartans forced Michigan into a 3rd-and-20. It was a small crack opened in the door of hope. Michigan slammed it shut with a sweat-free conversion. A gain of 27 and the route was back on.

It doesn’t matter what the final score was. It’s irrelevant. (Michigan won by a S— ton). Statistics don’t matter. (Shea Patterson became the first Michigan quarterback to ever pass for 300 yards on MSU and Ronnie Bell turned the game into a track meet).

It’s not about the numbers. It’s about the message.

In many ways this game was a microcosm of what has happened at Michigan State the last few years. Too few playmakers. Too few fresh ideas. Not enough energy or enthusiasm. After a decade plus of domination, the bill was eventually going to come due. It had to. Programs with the prestige and pocketbooks of Michigan don’t stay down long. And when it comes to getting back at Michigan State, Michigan was absolutely dying to get back up.

At one point in the fourth quarter Michigan defensive back Lavert Hill intercepted a Brian Lewerke pass. Receiver Cody White went to tackle Hill and was stiff-armed into the Wolverine sideline. Then, instead of continuing to advance the ball upfield, Hill stepped out of bounds to literally flex on White. It was a statement.

“I don’t need these yards. I need you to know I own you.”

Hate to the point of stupidity. It used to drive MSU football. Now it’s on the other sideline.

The attitude Michigan State used to rise to their once-elite status was nowhere to be found. Former players felt it.

Those two were far from the only ones. Former defensive tackle Lawrence Thomas tweeted, “Where is the [EXPLETIVE] pride???”

It wasn’t on the Michigan State sideline that’s for sure. Michigan laid the big hits. Michigan made the big plays. Michigan got a taunting penalty up two touchdowns. Hell, Michigan even ran a trick play. In a rivalry that has been dominated by conversations of who the “little brother” is, there was no debate who was bigger and meaner in Ann Arbor this afternoon. The script has flipped in this rivalry, there’s no doubt about that.

Michigan State was its usually sloppy self on offense. With a chance to get back into the game to start the fourth quarter, AJ Arcuri false started on 4th and one. Dantonio elected to then punt. That punt would never truly leave Jake Hartbarger’s foot, because it was blocked by Khaleke Hudson. One play later Nico Collins was dancing in the end zone and on MSU’s grave.

A self-inflicted mistake quickly compounded by poor football. That’s the new identity of Michigan State football.

Tempers flared late, as they always do in this game. Instead of looking the part of the bully laughing off a rival’s frustration, Michigan State looked foolish and cheap. Taking dirty shots because they couldn’t win on the field. Jacob Panasiuk was ejected for one such hit in the fourth quarter. That used to be Michigan in this rivalry. Not anymore.

Up 37-7, with 2:33 left in the game, Michigan wasn’t ready for the game to end. With their starters still in, the Wolverines were throwing deep for another touchdown. In their eyes, the Spartans hadn’t been beaten down enough. Ten plus years of frustration, all coming out over the span of 60 minutes of football. The bullied had yet again become the bully.

Mark Dantonio has a lot of questions to answer after this game and season. He’ll have to come up with some pretty good responses if he wants to try and scrape back any of the fans’ good will his program has been hemorrhaging for years.

In 2007 when Michigan running back Mike Hart unwittingly flipped the rivalry on its head with two little words, Mark Dantonio’s response was simple and tough.

“Pride comes before the fall.”

It’s the attitude that built his Michigan State program on. And now, more than 12 years later, after years of stagnant offense and no changes, after refusing to fire any of his friends in lieu of hiring outside help, after mastering the college football defense and then refusing to acknowledge it had been figured out, after not cashing in on recruiting, after climbing to the top and assuming it would stay that way just because that’s the way it was, after all of that, it’s that very same attitude that has brought the program back to its knees.

Pride comes before the fall.

Pride came.

The fall is here.

Halftime Thoughts: After quick start Michigan State getting beat up by Michigan

The Spartans don’t look game for a fight in this one.

Michigan State went into the Big House looking to salvage a disappointing season. The Spartans came out fast, picking up a 4th-down stop and converting the good field position into a 7-0 lead.

Then Michigan woke up. The Wolverines reeled off three consecutive scoring drives, with a 12 play 98-yard jaunt smashed in the middle. The refs may have well ended this game there, because that was more than a gut punch for MSU. It was a swift kick in the you-know-wheres.

Here are some thoughts on the first half and an outlook for the next two quarters.

  • MSU is using a new offensive line (L-R): Arcuri, Duplain, Samac, Campbell, Reid. I quite like most of this group and they got some good movement to start the game. That hasn’t been the case since and absolutely has to change.
  • MSU’s secondary has not played well and lost Josiah Scott on the second play of the game. He got kneed in the chin and was being evaluated for a concussion. Michigan has been able to find easy space in the secondary today. I’d venture to guess that will continue to be a problem.
  • The secondary is, flatly, terrible at tackling on the perimeter. Michigan is attacking the edges and the MSU defensive backs have been poor in response.
  • Lewereke likes so/so thus far. He’s making good decisions in the zone read game and threw a really nice ball to Cody White to get MSU down to the one yard line on their first TD drive.
  • I love that Michigan State plays this game with an edge, but their penalties have been absolutely killer. Two personal fouls cost MSU a prime scoring opportunity and another moved Michigan into the red zone on their first touchdown drive. That has to be corralled.
  • Michigan State had a bad drop by a receiver. Drink!
  • The Michigan offense is out-scheming the MSU defense. That’s incredibly embarrassing for the Spartan staff. Michigan killed MSU to the perimeter just like Indiana did. The Spartans took too long to adjust. Then UofM got rolling and started kicking MSU’s butt in the middle.
  • Michigan State has been lifeless once the emotion left and the teams settled in.
  • This game is super danger zone right now, if it isn’t already over. Michigan is making a statement today. Michigan State is rolling over.
  • MSU has to score on their first possession of the second half.
  • Michigan State needs to be less conservative on offense. They played completely on their heels in the second quarter. MSU needs to push the ball downfield on offense and be more aggressive on defense.
  • Michigan State has to win this game in the margins. Michigan is better than Michigan State. MSU can’t get dumb penalties. They can’t drop passes. They need to take advantage of advantageous situations. They haven’t done so at all this game and that’s why they’re down ten points.

Pick ‘Em: Our picks for MSU vs. Michigan and other college football games

Do we think MSU can bounce back in a big way this week?

Michigan State football needs a win in a big way.

After starting the season 4-1, the Spartans have dropped four straight games, each loss perhaps worse and more painful than the last. Now, the biggest game on the schedule awaits.

MSU travels to Ann Arbor to take on rival No. 14 Michigan (Noon, FOX). Do the Spartans have what it takes to bounce back and take down the Wolverines? Let’s see what our staff thinks.

Wil Hunter (40-18)

Michigan 24 – Michigan State 14

I’d love to be wrong here, but I have a tough time seeing Michigan State pull this one out. The Spartans are absolutely reeling right now. They can’t get off a losing streak. They’re really banged up. Questions are swirling about the future of the coach and program. It’s a mess.

I think the fact that it’s Michigan buys MSU something. The Spartans will come out fast and play well. At this point of the season though, Michigan is just a better football team.

Michigan State 14 @ Michigan 17

I hate to say it folks but this will probably be a bad weekend for Michigan State fans. There is just not enough evidence to support picking the Spartans over the Wolverines and that is so incredibly painful. Michigan State looked like they were on the right track during the beginning of the Illinois game. Boy, that faded away quickly. Now, it seems their season is pretty empty. Not a lot of hope over here.
