Tom Izzo talks Michigan State basketball loss to Nebraska

Quotes from Tom Izzo following MSU’s loss to Nebraska:

Michigan State dropped its second straight game and opened the Big Ten season 0-2 with a loss to Wisconsin last week and a loss to Nebraska on Sunday.

For a team ranked in the preseason top five, this start has been abysmal. The road loss to Nebraska dropped the Spartans below .500 (4-5 overall, 0-2 Big Ten).

Following the loss to Nebraska, Tom Izzo spoke to the media and discussed the state of his team.

Michigan State football ends losing streak, beats Nebraska on senior day

Harlon Barnett collects his first win at the helm of Michigan State, knocking off Nebraska:

It was senior day in East Lansing when Michigan State (2-6, 0-5 B1G) welcomed in the Nebraska Cornhuskers (5-3, 3-2 B1G) to Spartan Stadium. Behind an outstanding defensive effort, Michigan State was able to end Nebraska’s three game winning streak, while simultaneously ending their own six game losing streak, beating the Cornhuskers 20-17.

The Spartans offense had a decent day, something MSU fans haven’t been able to say for a while. In total, the Spartans gained 295 yards.

Both quarterbacks saw action in the game, with Houser getting majority of the work, finishing 13/20 for 165 yards and a touchdown. Sam Leavitt went 1/2 for 25 yards, also adding a touchdown. Both looked like plus players when in the game.

On defense, Jaden Mangham and Khalil Majeed both secured interceptions, while Cal Haladay recovered a fumble. The team also had 7 sacks, with true freshman, Detroit native Jalen Thompson leading the way with 2, while forcing the fumble Haladay recovered.

The win marks the first for Harlon Barnett since taking over as the interim head coach of the program.

Michigan State will look to carry this momentum on the road to Columbus next week when the Spartans match up with Ohio State.

Michigan State basketball shakes off turnover filled first half, beats Nebraska 79-67

Max Christie scored a career-high en route to a Michigan State 79-67 win over Nebraska

Michigan State survived another sluggish first half, stepping up in the second half to defeat Nebraska at home, 79-67. The win improves the Spartans to 13-2 and 4-0 in Big Ten play.

The first half consisted of a story that Michigan State fans wish would really go away, as the Spartans turned the ball over 11 times in their first 17 possessions. Salvaging the back end of the first half, the Spartans only had one turnover in the final 20 possessions of the half. Gabe Brown’s 10 points was a major factor as well, giving MSU a 38-34 lead heading into the break.

As we have seen in the last few games, Michigan State came out of the locker room looking like a whole new team on the defensive side of the floor, which ultimately turned into solid offensive possessions.

The Spartans efforts scoring the basketball was led by Max Christie who posted a new career-high, scoring 21 points on 7-of-9 shooting. Other Spartans posting double-figure points include Gabe Brown, Malik Hall and Tyson Walker.

MSU will need to continue fixing their turnover problem, as they turned the ball over 19 times in the game.

The Spartans will be back in action on Saturday for a rivalry matchup in Ann Arbor against Michigan.

Michigan State vs Nebraska Game Preview

Why Nebraska Will Win

Really … has Michigan State beaten anyone who’s any good?

It’s an underground hipster theory about Alabama’s win over Miami to start the season – Miami might not be any good. Bama is obviously amazing, but it might not be Alabama like everyone thinks it is, at least based off that win.

Michigan State beat the Canes. It also beat a bad Northwestern team and Youngstown State … oooooooh.

The Huskers aren’t playing all that poorly. The Illinois game looks more and more like a loss that would’ve been avoided if the Fordham game came first to work out some of the kinks, and the 23-16 loss at Oklahoma might have been – relatively speaking – among the best games yet under Scott Frost.

Week 4 College Football Expert Picks

Why Michigan State Will Win

The balance on the Spartan offense has been almost perfect – 791 rushing yards, 769 yards through the air.  It’s finding ways to move the ball as needed, it worked out the passing game timing against Youngstown State, and it’s been able to run well in all three games so far.

The O has been better than expected, and the defense has been a rock so far against the run. Nebraska’s Adrian Martinez is throwing well, and he leads the way in rushing, but the MSU D will take its chances with the ball in the air.

As long as Martinez isn’t hitting the big home run with his legs, the Spartans should be okay.

Week 4 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Nebraska is playing better overall lately, but Michigan State is just too sharp, too balanced, and playing with too much confidence in all phases.

Like the Oklahoma game, the Huskers will hang around and make it competitive, but they’ll come up just short when the chances are there to take over the momentum.

Michigan State won’t exactly break it open late, but they’ll get the big fourth quarter drive to put it away.
