FAU at Michigan State odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Friday’s FAU at Michigan State odds and lines, with college football expert picks, predictions and best bets.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3011″ ]

The FAU Owls and Michigan State Spartans open their 2024 NCAA football seasons at Spartan Stadium in East Lansing Friday. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET (Big Ten Network). Below, we analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the FAU vs. Michigan State odds, and make our expert college football picks and predictions.

The Owls begin the 2nd season under coach Tom Herman, and they look to improve upon a 4-win campaign in 2023. FAU lost all-everything WR LaJohntay Wester to Colorado via the transfer portal, but it added an assortment of skill positions to fill the void. RB CJ Campbell Jr. comes in from Florida State to handle the backfield chores.

Former Marshall QB Cam Fancher was named as the starting signal-caller for the Owls, who need to step up after managing just 23.8 points per game last season. The FAU defense was above average, and one of the reasons FAU had 4 losses by one score. It wasn’t far off from contending.

For the Spartans, it’s a season of transition. Jonathan Smith takes over as coach, and he has QB Aidan Chiles following him from Oregon State. While the offense is in good hands, Michigan State lost 3 key defenders, DTs Simeon Barrow to Miami, Derrick Harmon to Oregon and S Jaden Mangham to Michigan, after spring practice to deal Sparty a huge blow.

FAU at Michigan State picks and predictions

Prediction

Michigan State 26, FAU 13

Moneyline

Michigan State (-650) will set you back 6½ times your potential return, and that’s way too expensive for not enough reward.

The Spartans have so many questions, especially on the defensive side of the football. While FAU (+450) is rarely competitive in these Power 4 matchups, it has a lot of experience returning.

AVOID.

Against the spread

Take FAU +14 (-110) with the points, and even better if you’re able to find 14 and a hook at some point before kickoff.

The Owls have been outscored 91-17 in 3 previous meetings against the Spartans, but 2 of the losses were by 17 or fewer points. The closest pass was a neutral-site battle in Detroit when Michigan State won 30-17 Sept. 11, 2010.

Michigan State has a new regime, plenty of new faces and a change of scheme. It might take time to jell and get its sea legs.

Over/Under

The UNDER 45.5 (-115) might be the best play on the board.

Fancher, the Huber Heights, Ohio native, completed 65.6% of his passes for 2,162 yards, 11 TDs and 11 INTs in 2023 with Marshall while running for 273 yards and 4 TDs. While those numbers were nice, it might take time to get on track in his new landing spot with the Owls.

And, we covered how Michigan State is beginning a new era with Smith at the helm. While Sparty has some issues on D, the Owls have a decent defense. We should see the defense rule early in this game before the offenses start to settle in.

March Madness: Michigan State vs. North Carolina odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Saturday’s Michigan State vs. North Carolina odds and lines, with college basketball expert picks, predictions and best bets.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3011″ ]

The Michigan State Spartans (20-14) and North Carolina Tar Heels (28-7) are lined up for a West Region 2nd-round affair in Charlotte. Tip-off at Spectrum Center is slated for 5:30 p.m. ET (CBS). Below, we analyze BetMGM Sportsbook‘s lines around the Michigan State vs. North Carolina odds, and make our expert college basketball picks, predictions and best bets.

Michigan State, the No. 9 seed in the West, advanced through the 1st round after a 69-51 triumph as a 1.5-point favorite over 8th-seeded Mississippi State Thursday. MSU went 10-for-23 (43.5%) on 3-pointers with G Tyson Walker sinking 3 of 6 and finishing with a game-high 19 points. It was the Spartans’ 3rd consecutive cover against the spread.

North Carolina, ranked No. 5 in the USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll, is the top seed in the West Region. The Tar Heels backed that up accordingly with a 90-62 rout of No. 16 seed Wagner Thursday, covering as 25.5-point favorites. UNC is 9-1 over its last 10 games, and has scored 90-plus in 3 of those 10.

Michigan State vs. North Carolina picks and predictions

Prediction

North Carolina 72, Michigan State 70

Moneyline

MSU (+150) is the lean here but has better relative value getting the points. Should this tag reach +165 or so, the Spartans are a value play. PASS otherwise.

Against the spread

The Spartans are 8-4 ATS in non-conference play. UNC is 2-4 ATS when playing on 1-or-fewer days of rest. The Tar Heels are 2-8 ATS in their last 10 games against a Big Ten opponent.

North Carolina likes to play with pace and is efficient at both ends. The Tar Heels have averaged a robust 81.7 points per game this season, and they excel in taking care of the basketball while playing up-tempo ball.

MSU is content to keep possessions in check and is 8-4 ATS when facing teams averaging 77-plus PPG. Still, the Spartans may need to have another good game from beyond the arc to make this a 50-50 game at the end. But in that regard, they are battling a UNC 5 that has trailed off in perimeter defense of late.

TAKE MICHIGAN STATE +3.5 (-105).

Stream select live college basketball games and full replays: Get ESPN+

Over/Under

The Over is 4-1 in Carolina’s last 5 games. It is 8-2 in 10 UNC neutral-site games.

Expect some lofty free-throw totals for the Tar Heels and at least the fair possibility of 9-or-more triples for the Spartans. Peg the public as reading into MSU’s low Thursday score a bit too much.

BET OVER 140.5 (-110) — the lean here isn’t much, so consider a partial-unit play.

March Madness: Michigan State vs. Mississippi State odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Thursday’s Michigan State vs. Mississippi State odds and lines, with college basketball expert picks and predictions.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3011″ ]

The Michigan State Spartans (19-14) and Mississippi State Bulldogs (21-13) clash in an NCAA Tournament West Region, 1st-round game in Charlotte. Tip-off from Spectrum Center is set for 12:15 p.m. ET (CBS). Below, we analyze BetMGM Sportsbook‘s lines around the Michigan State vs. Mississippi State odds, and make our expert college basketball picks, predictions and best bets.

Michigan State last played Friday, falling to No. 3-ranked Purdue 67-62 — covering as an 8½-point underdog). An MSU defense tied for the Big Ten lead at 65.9 points allowed per game has led the way for the Spartans. But the Michigan State offense has sputtered of late. The Spartans have shot just 41.1% from the field in going 2-5 since Feb. 20.

Mississippi State last played Saturday, losing to No. 7 Auburn 73-66. MSU was an 8-point underdog, and the against-the-spread win marked the Bulldogs’ third in a row. Mississippi State got to the line 27 times against Auburn; the Bulldogs rank in the top-60 in the nation in free-throw frequency.

Michigan State vs. Mississippi State picks and predictions

Prediction

Michigan State 69, Mississippi State 68

Moneyline

PASS. Better value can be found against the number.

Against the spread

Mississippi State is 9-0 ATS on neutral hardwood and 15-10 ATS against winning teams.

Michigan State often gets pushed into taking iffy shots, and the Spartans figure to be at a disadvantage in rebounding and free-throw looks. The Bulldogs have been overall inconsistent at times, but they are elite in defending the perimeter (holding opponents to a 29.4% mark from 3-point range).

The Spartans will try to grind down the pace in this game, and that figures to grind down an overall Bulldog edge. Consider a partial-unit play on MISSISSIPPI STATE +1.5 (-115).

Play our free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

Over/Under

The play here is relatively strong, and it’s a zag against the zig of where the public has settled this total. The defenses and expected slow pace are driving the low-scoring narrative. But look for the Bulldogs to get plenty of 2nd-chance points and free throws, and look for the Spartans to have more than a few transition buckets off turnovers.

Look for a total in the 135-140 range. BACK OVER 130.5 (-110).

Michigan State at Purdue odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Saturday’s Michigan State at Purdue odds and lines, with college basketball expert picks, predictions and best bets.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3011″ ]

The Michigan State Spartans (17-11, 9-8 Big 10) head to Mackey Arena to face the No. 3 Purdue Boilermakers (25-3, 14-3) Saturday at 8 p.m. ET (FOX). Let’s analyze FanDuel Sportsbook’s lines around the Michigan State vs. Purdue odds as we make our expert college basketball picks, predictions and best bets.

Michigan State dropped its 2nd straight game with a 60-57 loss to Ohio State Sunday. It lost straight up as a 10-point home favorite, and the Under (138.5) hit. The Spartans were led in scoring by F Malik Hall, who had 15 points. G Jaden Akins did a little bit of everything for Michigan State. He scored 4 points, grabbed 3 boards, dished 2 assists and swiped the ball 3 times. Michigan State was outrebounded 39-33 in the loss.

Purdue, which is No. 3 in the USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll, has won 11 of 12 after an 84-76 victory over the Michigan Wolverines in Ann Arbor Sunday. It failed to cover the spread as a 13.5-point favorite, and the Over (151.5) hit. National Player of the Year candidate C Zach Edey tied his season-high with 35 points and added 15 rebounds and 2 assists. Purdue dominated the Wolverines inside, outrebounding them 41-28 and outscoring them 44-26 in the paint.

Purdue has beaten the Spartans in 7 of the last 8 matchups, including a 77-61 Boilermakers home victory in the most recent meeting Jan. 29, 2023. The Boilermakers covered as 8-point favorites, and the Over (130) hit.

Michigan State at Purdue picks and predictions

Prediction

Purdue 76, Michigan State 69

Moneyline

PASS.

You should obviously avoid betting Purdue (-650), as those odds are pretty steep. Bet the spread and/or total instead.

Against the spread

BET MICHIGAN STATE +10.5 (-110).

I’m going to bet the Spartans to cover in this one despite Purdue’s stellar record this season. The Boilermakers have covered just once in their last 4, while Michigan State has covered in 2 of its last 3 Big 10 road games. And while Purdue has won last 3 of the 4 in this matchup, Michigan State has covered in 3 of the last 4.

Michigan State coach Tom Izzo comes to play when March rolls around. Don’t make the mistake of betting against him.

Play our free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

Over/Under

PASS.

I’m not a fan of the total. Both of these teams are very hit-or-miss when it comes to the total this season. Purdue and Michigan State have both hit 3 of their last 6 Overs. I don’t love betting on what is basically a coin flip. I’ll save my money for Michigan State taking those points.

The No. 2 Michigan Wolverines (7-0, 4-0 Big Ten) and Michigan State (2-4, 0-3) meet Saturday at Spartan Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET (NBC). Below, we analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Michigan vs. Michigan State odds, and make our expert college football picks and predictions.

The Wolverines moved to 4-0 in the Big Ten with a dominant 52-7 home victory over the Indiana Hoosiers last Saturday, easily covering the 31.5-point spread while the Over (45.5) cashed. The cover was their 3rd straight against the spread (ATS) and improved Michigan to 3-3-1 ATS on the year.

Michigan State suffered its 4th straight loss last Saturday, 27-24 against the Rutgers Scarlet Knights, but did cover the 4-point spread. The Spartans are last in the Big Ten East and their only 2 wins have come against non-Power 5 schools.

Michigan is No. 2 in the US LBM Coaches Poll powered by USA TODAY Sports.

Michigan at Michigan State picks and predictions

Prediction

Michigan 38, Michigan State 17

Michigan (-3000) should have no problems with their in-state rivals on Saturday, but no way should you ever bet $3000 to win $100.

AVOID.

Against the spread

BET MICHIGAN STATE +24.5 (-110).

While Michigan is the far superior team, in a game like this against their arch rival on the road it cud be closer. The Wolverines have failed to cover against the Spartans in 2 of their last 3 meetings.

Over/Under

BET OVER 46.5 (-115).

Michigan has averaged nearly 50 points per game over their last 3 games. So, they could easily cover this line by themselves. The Spartans have allowed at least 26 points in each of their last 4 games.

In their last 4 meetings, these teams have gone Over this point total in 3 of them.

Michigan State at Iowa odds, picks and predictions

The Iowa Hawkeyes (3-1, 0-1 Big Ten) welcome the Michigan State Spartans (2-2, 0-1) to Kinnick Stadium Saturday. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. ET (NBC). Below, we analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Michigan State vs. Iowa odds, and make our expert college football picks and predictions.

The Hawkeyes opened their Big Ten play last week with a 31-0 loss at No. 7 Penn State, failing to cover as a 14-point underdog. Iowa is 2-2 against the spread (ATS) and 1-3 O/U. It is led by former Michigan QB Cade McNamara, who has 4 TDs and 3 INTs. Iowa’s strength is in its defense, having allowed 14 or fewer points in each of its first 3 games.

Michigan State also opened conference play last week. It lost 31-9 to the Maryland Terrapins, closing as a 7-point underdog. The Spartans are 2-2 ATS. It has yet to cover as an underdog. This will be the Spartans’ 1st road game of the season too. QB Noah Kim captains the offense, but RB Nathan Carter, who has 369 rushing yards in 4 games, is the most lethal big-play weapon.

Michigan State at Iowa picks and predictions

Prediction

Iowa 24, Michigan State 7

Moneyline

PASS.

There’s just no value here. Michigan State has been obliterated in 2 straight weeks and isn’t worth taking at +340. The expensive Iowa moneyline -450 isn’t worth backing either.

There’s nothing to see here.

Against the spread

BET IOWA -11.5 (-105).

Michigan State went on the road and lost 31-9 to Maryland last week. The Spartans are 0-2 straight up and ATS against Power 5 opponents. They were just 1-2-2 ATS on the road last season.

Iowa took down Big 12 side Iowa State and covered as a 3.5-point favorite in a 20-13 win in Week 2. The Hawkeyes were destroyed last week which might have been more about how good Penn State is and less about Iowa’s shortcomings.

The Hawkeyes have the better defense and better quarterback. Back them to cover. Take IOWA -11.5 (-110).

Over/Under

LEAN UNDER 36.5 (-110).

If there’s one thing both sides can agree on, it is that scoring points is overrated. Michigan State has averaged 8 points per game against Power 5 foes. It is 1-3 O/U this season.

Iowa has topped 24 points just once this season and has held its opponent to 14 or fewer in 3 of 4 games. It is also 1-3 O/U through the first 4 weeks of the season.

Expect a slow-paced game and back UNDER 36.5 (-110).

Washington at Michigan State odds, picks and predictions

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3011″ ]

The No. 8 Washington Huskies (2-0) and Michigan State Spartans (2-0) meet Saturday at Spartan Stadium in East Lansing at 5 p.m. ET (Peacock). Below, we analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Washington vs. Michigan State odds, and make our expert college football picks and predictions.

Washington is ranked No. 8 in the US LBM Coaches Poll powered by USA TODAY Sports. The Huskies are coming off a 43-10 home win against Tulsa as 33-point favorites. The victory marked the Huskies’ 9th in a row. A 1st-in-the-nation passing attack (472 yards per game) has paced UW so far.

Michigan State is 2-0 with a pair of covers. The Spartans’ toughest hurdle to date this season will be how the MSU squad handles the adversity of coach Mel Tucker being suspended without pay amid allegations of sexual harassment. The Spartans have the nation’s 5th-best pass defense (107 YPG) on paper, but that’s a small-sample figure earned against suspect foes in Central Michigan and Richmond.

Washington at Michigan State picks and predictions

Prediction

Washington 34, Michigan State 20

Moneyline

Too much juice. AVOID.

Against the spread

MSU was smacked in the mouth when these teams met in Week 3 last season. The Spartans were coming off 2 easy games then, too, and were rocked back on their heels early and fell 22-0.

Coaches are always looking for an us-vs.-the-world motivation. Look for Michigan State to have that edge in this one. The Spartans won’t be able to hang in a 1-possession game unless there is some significant turnover lean to the game, but look for the MSU defense to get some defensive-zone stops in at least slowing down the UW pass game. The Spartans offense should be able to get to 17 of 21 points, and that should make for a cover.

BACK MICHIGAN STATE +16.5 (-110).

Over/Under

Washington has a dangerous offense but is not a high-plays-per-minute type. The Under was a lean early this week, but the total has dropped 2 points since Monday and is now in a no-profit range.

Central Michigan at Michigan State odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Friday’s Central Michigan at Michigan State odds and lines, with college football expert picks, predictions and best bets.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3011″ ]

The Central Michigan Chippewas and Michigan State Spartans meet Friday at Spartan Stadium in East Lansing. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. ET (FS1). Below, we analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Central Michigan vs. Michigan State odds, and make our expert college football picks and predictions.

Central Michigan enters this contest as a double-digit underdog coming off the heels of a disappointing 4-8 season.  CMU’s starting QB has not yet been announced as redshirt sophomore Jase Bauer and redshirt freshman Bert Emanuel Jr. have been competing for the job. Bauer was last year’s backup, but Emanuel’s dual-threat ability make him a strong contender to start.

The Spartans are looking for improvement after a 5-7 season. With last year’s starting QB Payton Thorne having transferred to Auburn, the Spartans have QB concerns. Redshirt junior Noah Kim and redshirt freshman Katin Houser have been fighting for the starting spot. Coach Mel Tucker said fans will have to wait until gametime on Friday to see who the starter will be.

The Chippewas and Spartans haven’t met since 2018 when the Spartans came away with the 31-20 victory. Michigan State leads the all-time series 8-3 and is on a 4-game winning streak vs. CMU.

Central Michigan at Michigan State picks and predictions

Prediction

Michigan State 42, Central Michigan 24

Moneyline

PASS.

Michigan State should win this game but at (-650) the line is far too risky, bet on the spread and/or Over/Under instead.

Against the spread

LEAN MICHIGAN STATE -14.5 (-115).

I expect this game to be very competitive through 3 quarters, but the Spartans should be able to pull away a bit in the 4th. In the Spartans’ last 4 wins vs. CMU, only 1 of those wins was by less than 14 points. I expect CMU to give the Spartans problems, but Michigan State will show why they are a 2-TD favorite come the 4th quarter.

Over/Under

BET OVER 45.5 (-115).

In 5 of the 7 meetings between the schools since 2000, Over 45.5 has hit. Neither team makes their name with their defense, as is common in college football, and I don’t expect that to change here. With both teams starting new QB’s, expect this to be a very sloppy game.

Michigan State vs. Kansas State picks and predictions

Prediction

Kansas State 71, Michigan State 63

Moneyline

BET KANSAS STATE +105.

Kansas State has a high-powered offense backed by F Keyontae Johnson who scored 18 points in the 1st round and 13 points in 2nd. While KSU dropped its last game of the season on the road to West Virginia and its quarterfinal Big 12 matchup against TCU, the Wildcats are 6-2 in its last 8 games.

Their defense also stands out, ranking 17th in the country in defensive efficiency according to the KenPom rankings (the Spartans rank 31st). While the Spartans are top 10 in 3-point shooting, the Wildcats rank in the top-15 defensively for opponent 3-point percentage. Expect the Wildcats to create issues for the Spartans’ offense thus enabling them to advance to the Elite 8.

Against the spread

PASS.

The moneyline odds are a more profitable play on Kansas State in this game.

Over/Under

LEAN UNDER 137.5 (-111).

With both teams’ strengths being defense, points will be more difficult to come by in this matchup. Expect long possessions from both sides which will aid the Under.

The Under is 4-0 in Michigan State’s last 4 neutral site games including both games thus far in the tournament.

According to BetMGM, through 44 games thus far in the tournament, the Under is 33-11. It is in your best interest to back UNDER 137.5 (-112).
