[jwplayer QdR5S1l2]

As you know, Michigan State Football recently landed the commitment of three-start QB Hampton Fay. Evan Petzold wrote a profile about Fay for the Detroit Free Press. In this profile, Fay discusses what influenced his commitment decision. He specifically notes that the MSU Business Program was incredibly important to his decision making.

Here is the full quote, per Evan Petzold:

“Business is something I want to go into, and I know Michigan State offers a really good business program, so that was a huge highlight for me along with the football program.”

Ranking every Michigan State Football 2021 recruiting graphic

We ranked all ten Michigan State Football recruiting graphics designed by the MSU social media department.

[jwplayer cwRwWfAA]s

The Michigan State Football social media team has really outdone themselves this offseason. Over the last few months, they have been peppering top recruits with a barrage of awesome recruiting graphics that, in my biased opinion, are among the coolest I have seen nation-wide.

While these graphics are pretty much all fire, we had a lot of fun ranking them:

Former MSU receiver, defensive back Tony Lippett signs with Saskatchewan Roughriders of Canadian Football League

The 2014 Big Ten Receiver of the Year looks to revive his football career in Canada.

After a year off from professional football, Tony Lippett is back in the game.

The former Michigan State standout has signed with the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the Canadian Football League, according to TSN. Lippett last appeared in an NFL game in 2018 with the New York Giants. He was a member of the Cincinnati Bengals at the onset of the 2019 season, but was a final camp cut before the season. Lippett has played in 28 NFL games since he was drafted by the Miami Dolphins in the fifth round of the 2015 NFL Draft. He recorded 81 tackles and four interceptions in those games. Lippett was a starter in the secondary for the Dolphins during the 2016 season, but a torn Achilles in 2017 training camp essentially ended his time in Miami and derailed his NFL career.

The 2014 Big Ten receiver of the year will look to get things going in the right direction north of the border whenever the COVID-19 pandemic allows. The CFL was scheduled to begin on June 11, but that has been postponed indefinitely.

Projecting the post-spring Michigan State football offensive depth chart

Without the aid of spring ball, where do position groups sit on the offensive side of the ball?

Spring is an important time for college football depth charts. Practices in March and April set the stage for fall camp battles that may or may not happen as athletes jockey for starting positions. At programs with brand new coaching staffs–like Michigan State–that time is doubly important. Establishing the depth chart of a Mel Tucker’s new regime without the luxury of reports from spring practice or a spring game seems like a fool’s errand.

But I am a fool and these days I’m searching hard for any errand I can find.

The fall practices, training camps, or whatever we end up getting as a resolution from  college football returning during the COVID-19 pandemic will go a long way into shaping who is actually taking snaps once snaps are there to be taken. Mel Tucker has said himself that everybody has a clean slate with him. At some point that slate will have to start to dirty up a bit, as the time for evaluation shrinks by the day and the need for game preparation grows. We’ll see how it shakes out.

With that said, with the help of what we know from previous seasons and reading into press availabilities from assistant coaches, we can start to piece together what the Michigan State football depth chart probably looks like right now.

Today we will start with the offensive side of the ball and get to the defense and special teams later in the week.

Quarterback

  1. Rocky Lombardi or Theo Day or Payton Thorne

This is a totally wide open competition. Yes, Lombardi has the most experience of the bunch and it’s not close. But in the fall it will be almost two years since Lombardi has taken a meaningful snap as a starting college quarterback. And it’s not as if his run in 2018 was something that cemented his future as the starting quarterback. Sure, there were some good moments. But there were plenty of bad ones too. Plus, all three are learning a brand new offense. Lombardi’s advantage of being in the old scheme for three-plus years is out the window. Theo Day has almost no real game experience and his one shot against Penn State in 2019 was cut short when he called the wrong play just a few snaps in. Payton Thorne has yet to take the field at MSU. Had Mark Dantonio never left I would have picked Lombardi as the favorite to start, followed by Day and Thorne. With Tucker, I really don’t know. I’d probably just barely give the teeniest of edges to Lomardi with Day and Thorne in a dead heat for backup. Notice how many qualifiers I put in that sentence.

Michigan State Football offers 2021 4-star Florida prospect Dink Jackson

The Spartans are offering Dink Jackson, 4-star athlete out of Eau Gallie High School.

[jwplayer jEyuKxXM]

Michigan State Football has taken another big swing in the recruiting front, this time offering 2021 4-star athlete Dink Jackson out of Eau Gallie High School in Melbourne, Florida. Jackson is currently projected by 247sports to go to Florida State.

While Jackson is projected to go to his local school in Florida State, it is very important to note that Michigan State’s new Defensive Backs coach Harlon Barnett was the Defensive Coordinator for the Seminoles until Mel Tucker joined MSU as head coach.

Here is the offer announcement for Jackson, which was publicized by his high school football coach:

Jackson is listed as an “athlete” on 247sports, meaning that he is a versatile player who hasn’t locked into one role yet, although one of their affiliated scouts Andrew Ivins noted that he feels Jackson is best suited as an edge rusher. Jackson is the No. 33 ranked player in the state of Florida per 247sports.

MSU Football in top-5 for OLB Tyler McLaurin, top-10 player in Illinois

Michigan State has placed in the final five for OLB Tyler McLaurin’s recruitment. McLaurin is a top-10 player in Illinois for 2021.

[jwplayer jEyuKxXM]

If you have been paying attention to Michigan State Football’s recruiting efforts, you have probably notice that business has picked up considerably in the past few weeks. The Spartans now have ten recruits committed for their 2021 recruiting class, the first of Mel Tucker’s time with the team, and every player has at least been a 3-star. It looks like MSU might land the services of another 3-star recruit soon, as outside linebacker Tyler McLaurin has placed the Spartans in his final five for recruiting.

McLaurin’s final five are:

  • Michigan State
  • Michigan
  • Iowa State
  • Texas Tech
  • Nebraska

McLaurin is the No. 9 ranked player in Illinois per the 247sports composite rankings and their No. 26 ranked outside linebacker. And, in case you were wondering, he is 6-foot-2, which would make yet another player over 6-feet-tall in the class, something many fans have started to chuckle about as Tucker seems to be focused on bringing length and size into the fold.
